After a stellar regular season in 2012, the Reds failed to

the MLB playoffs despite posting a division leading record of
97-65. However, the front office of the organization made
a few off-season moves that

March is the craziest
month of the entire year, at
least for basketball fans. The
NCAA Tournament always provides surprising moments, and
this year is no exception. It is a
time when a team’s toughness
is tested and fans become crazy.
During March, the NCAA
Tournament is held; it is more commonly known as March Madness
for all the unbelievable things that
happen. In 2013, there have already been crazy things happening
and the tournament still has plenty of time for more excitement.
The major upsets of the first round
were La Salle beating Kansas State,
Harvard topping New Mexico, and
the biggest of all, 15 seed Florida
Gulf Coast beating 2 seed Georgetown. All of the 1 seeds advanced
to the Round of 32, but two of the
four, Gonzaga and Kansas, barely escaped, winning by 6 and 7
points, respectively. In the Round
of 32, many more late game heroics and upsets occurred. 13 seed
La Salle prevailed over 12 seed Ole

The NCAA tournament has
been around for almost everyone in this generation’s lifetime.
For 75 years now, the tournament
has given us dramatic upsets, cinderella stories and champions.
This year was no different. Florida
Gulf Coast is a small school out
of the Atlantic Sun Conference,
the same conference as NKU, and
earned their way into the tournament with a successful season and conference tournament.
People would argue that the
15 and 16 seeds of the tournament
are only in the tournament as a
tune-up game for the 1 and 2 seeds.
This year was not the case. The 15
seed Florida Gulf Coast won their
first round game against powerhouse Georgetown University, 7868. For most, that upset would be
the end. Not for FGCU, they would
carry that momentum into their
next game in the round of 32 where
they beat the athletic San Diego
State Aztecs also by 10 points 8171. The Eagles of FGCU are the first
15 seed in the history of the tournament to make it into the Sweet 16.
Although originally established in Ireland, the holiday has
spread across the land and encompasses all different types of cultures. The universal celebrations
pull together all different walks of
life for one common goal: to remember the good times and forget
the bad, all in the name of a saint
who continues to bless the great
land of the Irish. From the O’Doyles
to the Goldensteins, all can enjoy being green and letting loose.

Music is a powerful thing,
but few are truly able to master
the craft of producing the purity
and power that music can have
on people. In Covington, Kentucky, our very own John Frisch,
Will Huber, and Brett Micek of the
band Anderson Ferry have showcased this talent as their deep
blues-filled lyrics left the crowd
in awe at this year’s Battle of The
Bands at the Madison Theater.
On February 15, Anderson
Ferry as well as 17 other bands
that survived the first cut battled
it out for supremacy of the Greater Cincinnati area. Each band is
awarded 20 minutes to win over
the crowd and from the start Anderson Ferry had the crowd eating
out of their palms. Anderson Ferry
is an alternative band by nature,
but has deep rhythm and blues
in a majority of their lyrics. They,
however, were not the only band
that performed to the highest of
their ability. Six other bands including the incredibly talented Rio and
the Ramblers (Former CCH Grads
Ryan Snyder and Eric Torres band)
were chosen to advance to an extra round of musical battle due to
voting issues. The bands will later
battle it out to see who the top
band is in the Northern Kentucky/
Greater Cincinnati area. Expect everything to be left out on the table
with a record label on the line for
the top finishing band. Whether Anderson Ferry
or one of the other musically talented bands pulls out the title, it
is still a testament to the level of
craftsmanship that these bands put
into their art just for advancing so
far in such a high level of competition. Due to the recent news of
all top 7 bands advancing the next
round has been chosen to take
place on Friday, March 23. Come

help our own Colonels advance on!

Tiger Woods regained the title “World’s Best Golfer” on March
25th when he finished first place in
the Arnold Palmer Invitational. It
took him two and a half years to
take back the title he lost back in
October 2010. This was Tiger’s third
win of the season in which he only
has played in five events, which is
remarkable. Tiger now hopes to
end his championship drought this
April at The Masters in Augusta,
Georgia. Tiger claims that it has
been a long time since he felt so
confident heading into a major, and
he hopes to capitalize with a win.
King Of The Court
By: Matt Summe
Over the past two decades
it has become more difficult to
win games in the NBA because
the talent is so spread out. Therefore, no one has broken any records from the early 80’s because
there was a lack of talent. This
year could be a little different.
This year the Miami Heat
are trying to make history, and
they have almost accomplished
that goal. In 1983 the Los Angeles Lakers maintained a winning
streak consisting of 33 games. This
was when the NBA did not have
as much talent as it does today.
The Miami Heat right now is on a
winning streak of 27 games. They
have gone through thick and thin
during this streak. A big part why
they are doing so well is LeBron
James. He is averaging 27.9 points,
Page 3
8.8 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per
game. Those are MVP caliber stats,
and with him on the team there is
a chance that they can repeat and
win the NBA Finals. But you cannot forget about his supporting
cast: Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh,
and also future Hall of Famer Ray
Allen. These guys are all averaging at least 15 points per game.
That is unbelievable, considering
most teams do not even have three
players averaging more than that.
This streak has been going on for about two months now.
There have been many critics saying that the Heat will not be able to
maintain for this long, but the Heat
took that as fuel to the fire. The
Heat are now only seven games
away from breaking the record and
that will be an infinite amount of
momentum going into the playoffs. Tiger Wood’s amazing run
was halted after his infamous scandal and the divorce of his wife Elin
Nordegren in 2009. He fell as far
as No. 58 in the Official World Golf
Ranking before he began climbing
back. Tiger underwent addiction
problems, leg injury, changed his
swing coach, and he lost his biggest
sponsors including AT&T and Gillette. This is the reason why his resurgence took as long as it did; a lot
was going through his mind. Tiger
now is dating Olympic Ski Champion Lindsey Vaugn and he has never
felt more confident in his golf game.
Tiger Woods now has 77
career PGA Tour wins, and he is
only five behind the all-time leader, Sam Snead. This is also the first
time Tiger has one back to back
events since 2009 when he won
the Buick Open and the Bridgestone Invitational. Tiger Woods
is a 14 time major winner, only
4 behind Jack Nicklaus record of
18 majors. Tiger’s new number
one ranking and his recent confidence may result in a 15th major.

The Death of Football
By: Daniel Sandfoss
The world of pro-football is
collapsing around us as we know it.
There is no longer any sanctity in
the game, and the players are no
longer allowed to play hard-hitting,
smash mouth football anymore.
The National Football League, led
my commissioner Roger Goddel, is
now coming up with some of the
most strict enforcements on the
game, restrictions that have never
before been seen. If these new rules
and restrictions keep being brought
up by the league, soon we will need
to cough up the money to buy the
players tu-tus and pom poms.
The new rule that I am talking about now, of course, is the ruling about how running backs are no
longer allowed to lead with their
head. The league is trying to take
away the natural instinct to duck
your head when you are about
my make a collision with another
player. These players know the risk
of this game before they sign their
million dollar contracts, and they
know that every time they put on
those pads and walk on that field
they could get hurt. We cannot
allow the officials of the league
to constantly change rules to the
game, or there will be no game
left by the time they are done.
The game used to be played
in leather helmets, and today they
are played in the top of the line gear
with all the safety equipment a person could ask for. No matter how
much we try to protect our players injuries will always occur, but
we can control whether or not the
sanctity of the game is intact or not.

Another Type of Madness
By: Max Williamson
March is full of madness,
but not just for the players on the
court. Late into March, the top
swimmers of Division one swimming gathered together at Indianapolis to compete in the proverbial “floating four.” With Olympic
talent such as gold medalist Allison
Schmidt and Shannon Vreeland,
the meet was sure to be filled with
excitement and high expectations.
The field was out against
last year’s champion, Cal Berkeley, as Tenessee’s women powered
their way to victory in the first two
relays, but strong performances
by Georgia in the freestyle events
put them in a strong second place
after day one. From here the likes
of Olympian Elizabeth Beisel of
Florida and Stanford’s Maya Dirado
battled it out in the individual medleys, with Beisel remaining victorious. After day two, Georgia had
gained advantage of the lead with
Tenessee and Cal close behind.
On day three, tensions ran high,
and teams battled to the bone to
gain their team advantage and a
national championsip. The night
started off with a record shattering swim from Cal’s Liz Pelton as
she swam her way to an American record in the 200 backstroke.
From here, local Ohio standout
Margo Geer represented Arizona
and coined her second NCAA title
in the 100 freestyle, just missing
the NCAA record mark. To close out
the night, Georgia took first place
in the 4x100 Freestyle relay, edging out Arizona and Cal to take the
event in NCAA record time. However, due to foreign athletes on the
Georgia team, Arizona was credited with a new American record.
The final results were as follows: Georgia in first, Cal Berkeley
taking second, and surprise underdog Tenessee coming in third.
The ‘dawgs ended the night in
celebration and in culmination of
a year full of hard work and dedication. Next week, the men take
it to the pool and battle it out for

I spent my senior spring

thought was going to be another
extremely boring spring break
turned out to be one of my
favorites. I was fully anticipating
hours of siteseeing in Nashville,
when in reality it turned out to be
one of the best places I have been. My family and I left NKY
after Easter mass for the four hour
drive to Music City. We had no fixed
plans on the way down aside from
seeing my brother who attends
Belmont University, which is a few
blocks from downtown. The first
full day in Nashville was quite tiring. I woke up bright and early to have
breakfast, and then drove over to
the Grand Ol Opry Hotel with my
family. This hotel was the coolest
place ever it was a rainforest inside
of a building. There were rivers,
waterfalls, fountains, trees, fish,
and even a boat! The next day was
even better. I spent the night at my
brother’s house and then got picked
up by my dad to meet the family
at Noshville for brunch. After that
we headed over to the Parthenon. Wait, did I just say the Parthenon? Yes, I did. In Nashville’s Centennial
Park there is a full scale replica
of Greece’s Parthenon, including
the 30-foot Athena statue. After
an hour spent there, we headed

By: Andy Gregg
Every year a chastity speaker
comes to Covington Catholic in
the spring time, typically before
spring break. In the past we have
had speakers male and female that
seem to endlessly critique us boys
on our behavior, how we treat girls,
and how it is our fault. Needless to
say the Colonels were hoping for
something a little different this year. This year’s chastity speaker
was someone unexpected. Leah
Darrow was a previous model, was
on multiple top brand magazines,
and was also on a season of
America’s Top Model. Darrow’s
slogan on her posters around
school was “From Top Model,
To Role Model.” As soon as the
boys found this out everyone
seemed rather excited and much
anticipated for this chastity talk. This year had potential to be
different than the previous ones!
The talk was hosted in the
gym. Ms. Darrow was in the middle
with the Cov Cath freshmen and
sophomores on one side, junior and
seniors in the middle, and Notre
Dame freshmen and sophomores
on the other side. Her talk began
with everyone in full attention,
heads held high, but soon it became
directed straight to the girls of NDA. All hope seemed to have faded for
the Colonels, yet another year of
these talks. As she continued it did
get better. Even though the talk did
not seem to be related to chastity,
but only for a brief moment, it was
a great moral and life story. It was a
story that everyone can learn from
and use as a reference in the future.
Leah Darrow’s talk was
one to go into the books here at
CCH. The book of chastity talks

Sophomores Reflect
By: DJ Powell
On March 22, 2013, Covington Catholic
hosted the Sophomore Day of Reflection which
is a day where the sophomore class comes together and listens to many talks from seniors
which are supposed to help the sophomores
learn from mistakes the senior have made in
order to aid their last two years of high school
by persuading them to make good decisions.
Also, the day is used for the sophomores to
reflect on their past two years at Covington
Catholic and think about some things in their
life that they may need to change or situations
in their life that they may need guidance in.
The day began with two “ice-breaker”
activities to get the sophomores comfortable
and excited about the rest of the day as well
as getting to know their classmates a little better. Then the sophomores and seniors leaders
broke out into their tables and listened to the
first two talks from seniors Eric Zimmer and Jeff
Molony, respectively. The main topic of the first
two talks was family. The sophomores were
then asked to do an activity to help them reflect on how they have treated their family and
how they may be able to treat their family better. After the family activity, the sophomores listened to two more talks given by Quenton Floyd
and Adam Goddard on the topic of school. Following the school talks, the sophomores were
asked to do another activity to help them reflect on their experience at Covington Catholic
so far and what they can do to make the next
two years better than the first two in order
to have the ultimate high school experience.
The seniors then let the sophomores
take a break to eat their lunches. Afterwards,
the day resumed with two more talks on the
topic of “social” given by Ben Schweitzer and
Nick Stutler. The sophomores were then asked
to do a final activity to have them reflect on decisions that they have made socially the past two
years and to help them make good decisions in
the future. The day concluded with a talk and
closing prayer by the rector of this event, Daniel
Sandfoss. This talk was a way to challenge the
sophomores to leave the event and take lessons with them from the talks that they learned
throughout the day in order to better their lives.

Freshman Day Of Reflection
By: Ethan Egbers
Every year, Cov Cath holds a Reflection
Day for the freshmen so that they can look back
on the year and prepare for their future here
at CCH. This year’s day fell on Friday the 22nd.
More than 20 seniors helped to put together
to successful day. Tanner Fangman led the
charge as the day’s rector and Mr. Wirth and
Mr. Snyder also helped the students prepare.
Every Reflection Day is started with an
activity to break the ice and keep the students
loose and relaxed. This year’s activity frightened
our young freshmen as Father McDole took the
podium and gave the kids an earful. As he was
yelling at the kids, loud music came on and our
seniors charged out from hiding and danced
around like crazy. With the ice broken, it was
now time for the day’s activities to commence.
Most of our senior leaders just helped to
lead a table, but a few of the guys built up the
courage to speak to the kids about their trials and
tribulations during their time here at Cov Cath.
They gave them advice to consider as they go
on with their time here. The speakers were Zach
Stegman, Christian Greenwell, Jacob Futscher,
Grant Lyons, Nate Kunkel, Sam Williamson and
Tanner Fangman. The seniors prepared their
talks over a period of more than 3 weeks, and
the rest of the seniors attended meetings in this
time to organize all of the in’s and out’s of the day.
Overall the day was a huge success
for everybody with the freshmen learning
new advice from their senior brothers, and
the seniors reaping the benefits of their hard
work. Thank you to all the seniors involved
for sharing your story and making this day
one that the freshman will always remember.

KUNA is the Kentucky United Nations Assembly. It is a three day long event that gives the
participants to gain experience and practice with
doing internal diplomacy. The students which
are called ambassadors get to pick a country as a
team then enters into a debate. The team creates
a proposal on how to better the world as a whole.
Covington Catholic sent some students
down to KUNA this year with their leader Mrs.
Hagedorn. They decided to be the country of
the United Arab Emirates as they proposed to
increase research in desalination technologies.
Desalination is taking salt out of water to make
it possible for people to drink it. They would use
this technology to increase water supply to arid
nations. Mrs Hagedorn said, “It was a wonderful
time, we got to see the global visit and learn a lot
about different cultures and countries. We met
people from all over and they showed us talents
that were significant to their country, it was a very
unique and rewarding experience.” If given the
chance to go to KUNA you should not pass it up.

The best team all year long was the best team once again
during the Senior IBL Championship on February 15th. Team
Summe came into the tournament with only one loss and dominated the competition. They advanced to the championship after a close overtime win over Team Stansberry. It was a physical
game that resulted in Matt Summe needing to get stitches after
he was dealt an elbow to his eye. Team Humphrey was the dark
horse of the tournament who was left with task of dethroning
the top team. They advanced to the finals with a blowout win
over Team Shumate who was missing some key components.
Team Humphrey took an early lead behind the scoring of Nate Erpenbeck. Kellen Jenkins quickly cut the lead by
draining deep threes and driving the lane. By halftime, Team
Summe had sustained a significant lead with Jenkins 18 points.
However, they came out flat, and Team Humphrey took advantage of it. With 10 minutes left in the game, the score was
tied and Summe’s leading scorer, Jenkins, was cold with no second half points. Five minutes later, Jenkins began to take over.
Team Summe held out the lead for a victory. The final score
was 69-65. Jenkins and Erpenbeck were the leading scorers with
28 and 16 points respectively. Summe picked up his second championship after winning the title his junior year. He had big shoes
