Weekly Reflection
Reflexión Semanal
Seeking Wisdom
Buscando la Sabiduría
Today’s readings and prayers remind us to ask God for
the gift of wisdom so that we may discern our response
to his Word. The reading from the Book of Wisdom
directs us to this supplication, “I prayed, and prudence
was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came
to me.” This Old Testament voice says nothing compares to wisdom because “all good things together
came to me in her company. “ This voice understands
the entreaty in the responsorial psalm that we must ask
God “to make us glad for the day when you afflicted us,
for the years when we saw evil.” This wise understanding of how God’s grace works in our lives contrasts with
the voice of the man in the gospel. He approaches Jesus saying, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit
eternal life?” The man acknowledges that he has kept
the commandments that Jesus enumerates. Jesus invites him saying, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, and
sell what you have, and give to the poor; then come,
follow me.” At this moment the man becomes sad and
leaves. Saint James’ letter to the Hebrews explains
what has occurred. “The word of God is sharper than
any two-edged sword penetrating even between soul
and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.” The man’s inability to
surrender his worldly stability and power has been
“exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render
an account.” This is also our
challenge. God calls us through
his Word and we must discern
our response. We pray, “May
your grace, O Lord, at all times
go before us and follow after
and make us always determined
to carry out good works through
Christ our Lord” (Collect).

Did you Know?
When secrets become dangerous
There is no better time of year to review
the important family rules that help to
keep all children safe. It takes just a
few moments to review with your children what to do in an emergency, who the special and
safe adults in their life are, and the importance of not
keeping secrets. Some secrets, like a gift for a special
occasion, can be fun and safe to keep. Secrets that hurt
others, involve any kind of unsafe or inappropriate touching or anything that bothers a child – are secrets that are
NOT safe to keep. Help your child understand the difference. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Back to School:
Secrets,” email: [email protected].

peligrosos

Concert for Vocations
On September17th, a young man, Marvin Avella, was accepted into the Capuchin Franciscan Order. Marvin had a
large debt; however, due to the generosity of the Laboure
Society that raises money to clear these debts, young
men and women like Marvin, are able to pursue their
dream of a religious life. St. John Baptist de la Salle Parish would like to support the goals of the Laboure Society.
A wonderful concert is planned for Sunday, October 18th
at 4:00 p.m. Fr. Peter Banks, OFM, Cap, Director of Vocations for the Capuchins will be a special guest. There is
no charge but donations will be gratefully appreciated.
For info please call Karen Tibbits at 818-363-2535 x225.

former Pastor, Fr. Steve Davoren, Director of Vocations,
as we recognize and give these new priests our support. Fr. Leon is giving the closing prayer. Invitation
forms are at the parish office. Contact Ed Lupton, 805258-9554 or email: [email protected] for additional
