LEARN A LANGUAGE
Free With Your
Library Card!
Just in time for the spring and summer
travel seasons, learn a new language with
Rosetta Stone or Mango Languages! Both
applications are free with your library card.
Learn at your own pace on your computer or mobile device, wherever you have
Internet access. You can track your progress and choose core lessons to build speaking, reading and writing skills.
ROSETTA STONE
Rosetta Stone is one of the most recognized
brands in language learning. The Library’s
subscription offers Level 1 learning for 30
languages. Level 1 includes 50 hours of
foundational instruction for each language.
This program uses immersion learning; you
will only hear and speak the new language.
The curriculum is sequenced to introduce
new skills in a way that stimulates the
brain’s natural language learning ability.
MANGO LANGUAGES
Mango Languages uses successive lessons that build on prior ones; you can both
read another language and hear it spoken.
Mango offers language learning and valuable cultural insights for over 60 languages,
including American Sign Language.
Mango Languages teaches four key components in learning a language: vocabulary,
pronunciation, grammar and culture.
Lessons given by native speakers will help
you properly pronounce words, sentences
and phrases. A pop-up mouse tool with
phonetic spelling also helps you with pronunciation. A voice comparison technology feature allows you to record yourself
and compare speech with a native speaker,
to help you mimic proper inflection and
pronunciation. Mango includes customs
and etiquette, and offers more advanced
learning levels than Rosetta Stone.
To begin using these programs, visit the
Library’s website, and download the mobile
apps to use them on Apple or Android
devices. Mango also works on the Kindle
Fire (second generation and above), Fire
HD and Fire HDX tablets.
Follow our online guides, or stop in to the
Library with your device and our staff will
help you get started.

YOUTH SERVICES CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
The Library Board has approved renovation of the Youth Services areas which will begin
in mid-March. Construction will begin at the Northfield Branch Library, affecting some
seating areas for 7-10 days. Improvements include new lighting and new youth room study
booths, new picture book shelving, painting, and the removal of a raised-step area for
improved safety and increased usable square footage.
After the Northfield project is complete, construction will begin at the Winnetka Library.
The goal is to always have a youth room available to district residents during the renovation process. The Winnetka Youth Services area will be closed during construction.
Popular youth materials will be available for browsing on shelving near the checkout desk.
Materials can be requested from the Northfield Branch and other area libraries and be
delivered to Winnetka for pickup. Storytimes, youth classes and events will continue as
usual in the Winnetka Community Room in the lower level of the Library.
Improvements for the Winnetka youth space include new carpeting, paint, seating, shelving and a play area that can be used for Lego or STEM activities. A miniature desk area
with shelving will be a featured imaginative play space, set up with different fun educational and reading themes throughout the year. Planned themes include a play veterinary
office, science lab and bakery. The area will feature shelving to display related books to
encourage reading and subject exploration.
Product Architecture + Design is the architect for the projects. Funding will come from
the library’s capital expenditures fund. The budget for the project is $300,000. The youth
services areas were last remodeled in 1990 (Winnetka) and 1999 (Northfield). For more
information and to follow the progress of the project, check the library website or subscribe to our eNewsletter by texting WINNLIB to 22828 (use all caps).
A SAFETY REMINDER FOR WINNETKA LIBRARY VISITORS
When using the outdoor book drop to return your library items, please take a moment to
park so that your car is not on the wrong side of the street as you drop items into the bin.
We apologize for the inconvenience. Due our space restrictions, we are unable to relocate
the book drop to facilitate drop off of items from the driver’s side of a vehicle.
