Summer Sailstice Wrap-up
The Bay Area’s annual Summer Sailstice celebration was held at EYC on June 18th.
As this was our first year hosting the event, the planning committee went to great
lengths to ensure that we put on a wholesome, family oriented event that would reflect
well on the club. With direction from Summer Sailstice founder John Arndt, it appears they succeeded, as everyone loved the new venue and have already started talking about next year. From a club perspective, we raised well over $1,000 for the
Encinal Sailing Foundation and signed-up a record number of new members.
If you couldn’t make it on the 18 , this short video posted at the Alameda Patch offers
a good overview of what you missed.

SOUNDINGS
FROM THE
PRESIDENT...
Lew Lippard
Our big event for the year, the Sailstice, is now behind us. It
was a major success, beyond our wildest expectations. We can
not thank or give Mike Scheck enough atta boys for the excellent job he did in the planning and execution of this event.
We should also not forget the many volunteers who assisted in
the planning and with the execution of this event. Everyone
was happy, the vendors who had high accolades, the visitors
who were enjoying themselves, our members who were also
enjoying themselves and John Arndt, Associate Publisher of
Latitude 38 and founder of Sailstice, who was extremely
pleased. This event has added to the prestige of Encinal Yacht
Club, as it was covered in the local press in Alameda, Berkeley
and other local media. We look forward to supporting these
events in the future, which will be much easier now that we
have completed this one.
The annual Coastal Cup, which terminated in Avalon, Santa
Catalina Island was another success. The full report will be in
the Flag Officer’s reports later in the newsletter.
Note that there is a requirement for everyone using the pool to
check in with the pool attendant, or the office when there is no
attendant, and to have a wrist band. Be aware that the pool
attendant is not a lifeguard, and you use the pool at your own
risk. Note also that children not “water safe” must be actively
supervised. Non swimmers and young children are not considered “water safe”. It is important and necessary that you follow
these and all the other pool rules. They are for the safety and
enjoyment of the pool by all members.
This month we are starting with a monthly review of the Standing Policies, to remind us of the rules. Each month a couple
of rules will be reviewed by the Board and then included in the
Soundings. The General Conduct Standing Policies are included in this issue in addition to the Pool Standing Policies.
We are planning on having a Special Member’s Meeting on
Saturday, August 27th at 5 PM. The purpose of this meeting is
to make some changes requiring adjusting the By-Laws. We
want to adjust the date of the Annual meeting to allow flexibility to move away from the Thanksgiving holiday and possibly
hold it on a week-end date so that more members will be
able to attend the meeting. Additional, we would like to
clarify the governance of the Club and bring the structure
up to date. This includes the election of the Vice President directly by the members instead of by the Board of
Directors. It includes specifying the Treasurer as a Director and a member of the Executive Committee, as
finances are an important part of any deliberation of these bodies. Also included are the duties and responsibilities of the Directors, individually and as a body, and of
the various Standing Committees. The Standing Committee list has been revised to bring it up to date. You
will receive the details of these changes in July.
You have received your first monthly statements from our new
accounting software. I am sure that you noticed the improvement in your monthly statement. You can now more easily
check off the individual charges. We are still in the process of
converting all the accounting information from our old system
to the new one. Once that is completed we will start setting up
the new features that are available in the new system. Our next
focus will be internet access to a “members only” section which
will contain Board of Director’s meeting agendas and minutes,
financial information and other information for our of interest Again, this will be an active month. Kicking off July will be the
to our members. Following that we will address the expanded annual 4th of July Cruise-in to the Club. See you there.
capabilities for our web site; for example, integrating online
reservations and expanded race information and capabilities.
It may take some time to get all this in place, but I am sure that
you will be both surprised and impressed with the result.
As we predicted last month, our pool has seen increased activity. We had an incident there which could have resulted in an
extremely serious situation. The efforts of new member Alex
Calvillo kept this from becoming a major catastrophe. Our
thanks and gratitude go to everyone who helped. Thankfully
the child involved is ok. Elsewhere in the newsletter you will
find an updated Pool Rules section of our Standing Policies.

General Conduct
Dan Hayes

All members shall exhibit a norm of exemplary
good manners and especially good sportsmanship
when associating with Encinal Yacht Club members
and staff either at the facility or while engaging in
activities sponsored by the Club, when engaged in water
associated activities or engaged in any other activity
which would reflect on the Club and it membership.
The abuse of Club members and/or the facilities adversely affects the Club’s reputation and, more importantly, its sense of dignity and financial outlay.

Members are responsible for the conduct of their
families and guests. Children are permitted and
encouraged to use the facilities. However, it is
emphasized that the parents are responsible for their
actions of their children.

Members shall treat employees with respect and
consideration.

The dress code in the Club until 1800 hours is a
minimum attire of shoes, shorts and top. After 1800
hours in the Dining Room, a minimum attire of dress
slacks and dress sport shirt for men and dress or slacks
with an appropriate top for women is requested.
Special Club parties should imply the appropriate
dress. Bare feet and swimsuits without cover will not
be allowed in the Club Lounge, Bar and or Dining
Room areas. Gentlemen are requested to remove
Caps while in the Dining Room.

Members are requested to wear their nametags at
all times when on Club premises.
Hey everyone, Real quick,
In the last month we:
 Finished painting the outside of the fence around the
Garbage area
 Rebuilt the Kitchen entrance gate
 Had the parts fabricated for the dock landing rebuild
 Rebuilt the ramp Landing
 Painted the curbs (Some moron drove into the yellow
within about 10 minutes of the time Tom Sheehan finished painting the curbs)
 Planted the flowers and put in the tanbark.
 The automatic gate broke; we bypassed the timer and
ordered a new one.
 The post we replaced due to dry rot last year, the one
that keeps getting primer painted white after I paint it
gray, was repainted gray again.
 The water lines have been partially re routed as part of
the Personnel Ramp Replacement Project scheduled for
August.
 The Flag Mounts were installed in the Dining Room
 Painted parts of the new rebuilt landing.
All of this required labor.
I cannot thank the people that helped enough.
The list of helpers is large also; it includes, but is not limited
to:
Ray Jensen, Eric Eschen, Niels Glaser, Mark Bernhard, Cathy
Gordon, Chuck Wetteroth, Diane Hayes, Jim Parks, Peter
Ashwanden, Kevin Clark, Tom Sheehan, The whole PowelFord Family (especially Marcus and Curtis), Lance Bateman
& Bill Emberly.
The list of things to do and members to thank goes on
and on and on. Without these volunteers, the place
wouldn’t look the way it does.
Next month I’ll Publish that list of things to do, and a
schedule of the work days for the next couple of
Months.
Respectfully Yours,

First, I would like to thank and congratulate Vice
Commodore Victor Early and all who helped in this
year’s Coastal Cup to Catalina Island. Victor and
team did an outstanding job running the race and
fun was had by all. Here is a race recap from Victor:
“Encinal Yacht Club's Coastal Cup began with the slower
fleets starting the morning of Wednesday June 15 sailing
out the Golden Gate towards Santa Catalina Island. The
fleets sailed out against a flood tide, making way along
Baker Beach and Seal Rock with challenging currents and
swirling conditions. Once out, NW winds built to 25-30 kts,
seas were confused, and spinnakers were flying with variable success. Four boats including EYC member Steve Waterloo's CAL40 would retire within the day, with problems
ranging from torn kites to taking on water and an injured
crewmember. Early in the race Tiburon and Shenanigans
were leaders with the modified 11 Meter from Skiff Sailing
close behind. Planing speeds up to 30 kts with the kite flying were reported. The larger and faster boats started the
following morning, also against a flood with similar wind
and seas on the outside. The larger fleet included Holua, a
SC70, and O Canada, an Open 60, sailing with kites up and
planing along at average speeds of 15-20 kts until winds
lessened south of Point Conception.
Steve Stroub's Tiburon, the SC37, was able to stay out and
finish at the west end of Catalina before the winds shut
down for the other boats early Friday morning, winning
their class and overall on corrected time. Brack Duker's
Holua won her class and O Canada took line honors. EYC
member Bob Gardiner in his Olson 40 won first EYC boat
to finish. Complete results at www.encinal.org.”

Rear Commodore Chris Hanson and team did a
fantastic job running the now official “Beer Can

performance in the Summer Series.
We will be running a couple of very large regattas in
July. First is the Finn Masters North Americans on
July 8th – 9th, and the second is the annual running
of the YRA Second Half Opener on July 23rd and
24th. Please reached out to Victor or Chris should
you want to help out on the race committee.

Rui Luis
Rui M.G. Luis was born on January 19, 1963 to the late Jose and Clara
Luis in Faial, Azores, Portugal.
He passed away unexpectedly June 5th, 2011 in Alameda.
He came to the United States at the age of 14, living in Lincoln, CA. His
greatest passion was the water.
His first boat was a Buccaneer. He had a Catalina 22 on Folsom Lake and
eventually a Moore 24. He brought the Moore 24 down to the bay area
and that was the end of the lake sailing. He liked the weather much better
down here then up in Lincoln. He belonged to probably every yacht club
on the
Estuary, but his first estuary club was EYC, back in the late 80's. Rui belonged to the SSS, racing to the Farallons and back many a time.
He started and ran his sail repair business known as “Rooster Sails”, first
in Oakland on Ford St., and eventually moving to Alameda.
He was quite a sailor and will leave a hole that cannot be filled.

JR. SAILING...
BAYS #2 @ Richmond YC, June 11-12
By: Maya Dornbrand-Lo
During the weekend of June 11th and 12th,
seven Encinal YC junior sailors competed in the
second summer BAYS regatta (www. bayareayouthsailing.com) hosted by the Richmond Yacht
Club. Andrew Godfrey placed 3rd in the Laser Radial
fleet out of 13 boats and received a sportsmanship
award. Sailing 420s, Guy and Nina placed 3rd overall
and Olivia and I placed 4th. TJ Mahoney and Kelsey
Tostenson sailed in the Opti Championship fleet.
The conditions in the Bay were difficult to sail
through, especially since the wind was steadily growing
to around 20 knots combined with lots of waves and
strong current. The Optis sailed inside the breakwater
where the wind was still strong, but lighter than the
Bay course, and less current. At the end of the second
day, the 29ers, Lasers, and 420s were moved to Keller’s Cove because almost everybody was capsizing. In
addition to a BAYS regatta, this regatta was also the
NorCal US Sailing Junior Olympics. There were four
29ers, nine 420s, thirteen Laser Radials, and as always, a bunch of Optis. There were a lot of familiar
faces sailing that we recognized from the various yacht
clubs around the Bay Area, but also many new faces.
It’s exciting for me to see new people sailing and
knowing that our sport is expanding.
This was my second regatta sailing with Olivia
and we were very excited to compete. Throughout the
regatta, Olivia and I learned that by sailing
consistently we could place higher overall rather than
having our scores all over the board and placing
lower. We also learned not to undermine our sailing
abilities by comparing them to the other teams. There
were two boys from Texas in our fleet, who we had
never seen before. They would put their spinnaker up
in any wind conditions without even thinking.
However, Olivia and I waited to see what the rest of
the fleet decided to do. We decided that we could
keep a good distance and keep our place without our

spinnaker. There was a lot of current, and a couple of
times Olivia was worried we were over early at the
start. We used line sights of the landscape, which
really helped us be sure we weren’t over the starting
line. When we went over the rolling waves, I got hit
with most of the spray and Olivia was almost completely dry. During the first day, Olivia and I were
getting into the grove of sailing together and our places
kept getting better and better. At the end of day one
Olivia and I were in 2nd followed closely with Guy and
Nina in 5th.
During the second day, Olivia and I started
out with a bang, placing with a 3rd and a 2nd. On the
upwind leg of our second race, I was out on trap and
we hit a really big wave. I slipped on my jib sheet and
as the boat heeled over, I crashed into the front part
of the hull. Olivia and I just laughed it off and we
went on to have a great finish. Even though it was only
their second 420 regatta, Guy and Nina were one of
the only boats that didn’t capsize in the tough conditions. At the end of the day, the wind started to die
down and Olivia and I could see that everyone was
having a much easier time sailing downwind and no
one seemed to be struggling with their spinnaker.
My favorite memory of this regatta is being out
on the trap at the end of the first day , planning in to
the dock and knowing that Olivia wouldn’t purposely
dunk me in the water. It was great having so much
trust in my skipper through such a difficult regatta.
Summer Sailing at EYC is off to a great start! If you've
been down to the club recently you've surely seen all the
kids on the docks, in boats, and all around the club.
Our instructors are keeping them very busy learning
knots, points of sail, boat handling, and terminology.
The first week of the program was a huge success! Lots
of smiling faces and kids eager to come back for more!

After spending most of Saturday afternoon touring
downtown Benicia, cruiser prepared appetizers were
served to all on the docks late Saturday afternoon. The
appetizers were varied and excellent. Saturday’s dinner
was at the Benicia Yacht Club and was catered by A
Taste of Life Catering. Dinner was preceded by a wine
tasting event at the yacht club and several EYC members took part. To briefly summarize, the members
and staff of the Benicia Yacht Club and the A Taste of
Life Catering owner and staff did a magnificent job.
In addition, several “land cruisers” joined the group on
the docks for appetizers, Saturday dinner at BYC and
post dinner festivities. Land cruisers included Rob &
Carol Woltring, Kevin & Liddy Clark, Peter & Susan
Aschwanden, Chuck Hero & Edie Walker and John
Becket & Anita Mahoney.

Burgees, Burgees and More!!!!
I can now report that the burgees are back in the club. I
know many of you have waited a long time to see their
return. As with many projects in the club we have a lot of
different opinions as to where and how things should be
done. To be exact 330!!! Somehow we do find a way to
resolve our differences and finally agree on a solution. We
have over 200 burgees and still more to come that have
been hung in the main dining room. The PICYA burgees will
be moved to the bar area once the final plans are in place.
So we have one more step to make everyone happy. Thank
you Soren Hansen and Mark Bernhard for completing the
mounts in the dining room, Dan Hayes, Niels Glaser, Chuck
Wetteroth and Mark for installing them, Doug Perry for
orchestrating and hanging along with his volunteers, Paul
and Stephanie Ahern, and Dave Henkle. I cannot forget Fred
and Jean Rutledge, Doug Perry and Vicki Newcomer for all
the time it took to clean, press, label and identify those that
are no longer in existence, etc. Great team effort. Thanks to
all of you for your patience.
Summer started off at EYC with one of the biggest events
ever. The Summer Sailstice. We want to thank Mike Scheck

success. This is definitely on the calendar for next year.
EYC had their first Wine Pairing Dinner. Burgundy tablecloths
black napkins, grapevines, candlelight and soft music. Are you
drooling yet? That was only the beginning. Manny received a
standing ovation for his six course dinner. He really stepped
up his creativity with a mouth watering menu. Our staff was
tremendous in serving and timing the wines and courses and
assisting me with all the little details. You all did such a
fantastic job. David Roveto was our host from Coppola Wines
who made the evening so enjoyable. We are looking forward
to presenting another dinner and hope more of you can join
us.
Remember to mark your calendars for 4rth of July, Ladies
Night Out, and Kids Movie Night. It is you the member who
make these events happen. Please come down and enjoy
your club!!!
Watch your Signal Flag and Soundings for more details on
these upcoming events.
Have a safe and wonderful summer.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS...
Chris James
Membership
June is shaping up to be another very bust month for Membership with a number of new programs and events taking
place.
Mentor Program
The Membership committee has just started the “Mentor Program” at EYC which is focused on matching new members
with existing members with like interests. Larry Westland did
a great job of developing the program with the intent to help
new members learn how to navigate the broad number of
activities and events that EYC has to offer and to help them
take advantage of what the club has to offer.
Peggy Kidd did the first round of recruiting Mentors and has
worked with the most recent new members to get everyone
matched. If you are a member and would like to be a Mentor,
or a new member who would like to be assigned a Mentor

receive the free month of dues referring members must print their
name on the top of each application submitted. Completed applications need to be received in the EYC office no later than July 31,
2011.
Please note this program applies to all EYC Members, if you are a
“First Year” Member you still qualify for the Referral Incentive, you
just cannot be the applicants sponsor. As written in the EYC by
Laws, sponsors need to be a member of EYC for at least one year.
In addition to the dues credit for referring members, we are going
to waive the initiation fee for all applications received during this
program. After July 31ST the standard initiation fee will be increased back to $ 1,000.00.
As usual, all applicants need to be interviewed, applications signed,
posted for 10 days in the EYC office, and approved at the monthly
Board Meeting held on the third Thursday of the month. Your
credit or credits will be issued on your monthly statement the
month following Board of Directors approval of the member.
If you have any questions about our latest promotion please feel
free to contact me at [email protected]
Please welcome our newest member:
Regular Membership:
Summer Sailstice
The Membership committee sponsored two booths at the
Summer Sailstice held during the past weekend. The club
looked great (thanks to Dan Hayes and friends), and the staff
and volunteers did an excellent job showing what EYC is all
about. I am happy to report that we received nine applications at the event, as well as handed out another fifteen application packages to some very interested people.
I look forward to reporting the final statistics from the event
next month and things are looking great so far!

When you see a member with “1st Year” on their badge please be
sure to introduce yourself and welcome them to the club!
See you around the club,

Membership Incentive Program “Refer a Friend”
Over the past few years we have been successful in growing
the Encinal Yacht Club membership which has enabled us to
not increase dues or assessments. To continue this growth
trend we are implementing a new membership program.
Effective immediately, and through the month of July, we will
give members a free month of dues for each new member
