Raising Money for Comic Relief
As part of KES’s ongoing commitment to supporting worthwhile charities, students
and staff took part in various activities to raise money for Comic Relief.
On Red Nose Day itself, catering students made and sold biscuits, pizzas, hamburgers and hot dogs, while
other students and staff painted their faces and wore non-uniform. A raffle was held for two cakes that were
made by Year 7 students, Ellis and Callum. The boys worked together at Ellis’s house with his mum to make
the cakes – one chocolate and one raspberry jam. The cakes were raffled off to staff with Mrs Bleach and Mr
Lamb winning the delicious prizes. The boys raised £66.
The school managed to raise £2267.88 in total for this worthy charity.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM UPDATE
The past half term – only 5 weeks in length – has been intense. Further exams for Year 11,
Year 12 and Year 13, together with a wide range of sporting activities, performances, Comic
Relief activities, trips and the usual routine of lessons, has ensured we have all been very busy
indeed. Added to that, we have seen some significant bouts of sickness and other bugs for
students. These have taken their toll and have certainly had an impact on students’ attendance
at school. I hope that, as we enter a new term after Easter, students’ health will be better; the
first step to success at school is being here – students can’t learn effectively if they have low
attendance. We hope to see all students recover any lost ground over the course of the summer
term.
During the Easter holidays, we will be offering a range of exam preparation activities in school.
Years 12 and 13 will have been invited by their teachers on centre days if that teacher is
running sessions. We are, though, trialling a different approach with Year 11. We will be
using ‘Grade Booster’ sessions. These will only be for selected subjects and only for selected
students.
Many students should feel confident and secure in planning their own activities and taking
charge of their own revision. We want students to be as independent as possible; however, we
will be offering a quiet study area for anyone who wants to use it, regardless of invites to ‘Grade
Booster’ sessions. Students selected for these sessions have already received invites and we
hope that this targeted approach will give a boost to a variety of students who particularly need
it. If you have feedback following the sessions, please let us know.
As I read through this issue of KES News before publication, two items caught my eye. Both
were in the Sports News section. Firstly, I was very proud of the Year 11 Futsal team (if you
don’t know what it is, Google it!). Playing Futsal was a new venture for us this year and to do so
well is a huge credit to their commitment and the hard work of Mr Lilleker. Secondly, the Year
13 BTEC Sport students were outstanding ambassadors for the school, working with Canewdon
Primary School students; they really embraced the KES values.
I hope you all have a good Easter break. We return to school on Monday 13 April.

Yet again, KES has shown its caring side in fundraising activities this term, with a tremendous
£5971.97 in total being raised for a number of charities, including the Tracy Ralph Appeal,
Comic Relief and the House charities: Make A Wish Foundation, Cheznye Emmons Save A Life
Appeal and Breast Cancer Care.
Our students have an amazing capacity to respond to the needs of others and this tremendous
amount of money raised in just one term clearly illustrates this. We want to say a big thank you
to all the parents, whose support is evident.
We are pleased to hear that Tracy Ralph (a former KES student) is making wonderful progress
and has just started standing on prosthetic legs. We hope to welcome her and her husband
Brett into school later in the year when she is more mobile.

HEADS OF YEAR UPDATE
Year 7
Two Year 7 students made an impression by making cakes to be raffled off to staff in aid of
Comic Relief. Well done to Ellis and Callum for their dedication to the cause.
The number of Year 7 students who have achieved their Bronze Enterprise Award has now
reached 50. It is good to see these students up on stage in assembly collecting their badges
and wearing them with pride. My challenge to these students is to ‘kick on’ and work hard to
earn their silver, gold and platinum awards. Our annual awards evening at the Cliffs Pavilion
is approaching and teachers are already thinking about who they will nominate for subject
awards. There is still time to impress your teachers! There are many ways in which to do this
in the summer term. Some are listed below:

Finally, there are a small number of students who are arriving at school without their
ID or House badges. These are part of the KES uniform and must be worn at all times.

Andy Lilleker, Head of Year 7
Year 8
We are over half way through this academic year and I am pleased to report many students
are making excellent academic progress. This was recognised in a recent assembly where
the ‘Kermit’ that is awarded to the tutor group with the best progress over time was won by
8BE who knocked 8CE off their top spot by a very close 0.8 gap. Congratulations to 8BE!
I was pleased to see so many parents and carers at the Year 8 parents’ consultation evening
on Wednesday 18 March; I hope you found this a valuable experience.
Congratulations to Abigail who was selected to receive the prestigious Jack Petchey Award!
Abigail was selected due to her high level of voluntary commitment at SEALS swimming club.
Abigail goes to SEALS, a group for disabled swimmers which she helps out at every Sunday;
she has been doing this since she was seven years old. She has already started spending her
£200 in the Technology department. This is a marvellous achievement and one that Abigail
can keep in her record of achievement folder ready for excellent evidence when applying for
further education and jobs.

Year 9
Please can I remind all Year 9 students that their exams start the week beginning Monday
13 April. I have shared a variety of announcements on www.showmyhomework.co.uk
regarding revision, although I’m aware that there was an issue with them ‘disappearing’. I
have addressed this with the website company and believe that the issue has been resolved.
Please contact me if you are having trouble locating the revision notes. I wish all Year 9
students every success in their exams.

HEADS OF YEAR UPDATE
Year 10
You will shortly be receiving the full reports for Year 10 students. Please review the student’s
progress with them and discuss the areas in which they need to focus their revision. Their next
examinations are the week commencing 13 April, so please support them with their revision
for these over the Easter break.
I would also like to add my personal thanks to the group of Year 10 students who recently
helped at the Infant Music Festival at Freight House; they showed great maturity and were a
credit to the school.
Can I also please take this opportunity to remind parents/carers of the importance of good
attendance, punctuality and uniform. These are essential qualities not only in securing
academic success but also in our search for prospective prefects, for which the application
process will commence after the Easter break.

Year 11
When the students return after the Easter holidays there will be less than four weeks until the
examinations start. It is imperative that students are using their time wisely and are putting
in place a revision programme in order to fully prepare for these examinations. Over the last
couple of years, the students have been involved in numerous sessions giving them tips on
how to revise effectively and it is important that students find which method or methods are
most effective for them.

Sixth Form
This term has been a very busy and tiring term for the Sixth Form. The last set of pre-public exams were sat,
which are a really useful indicator for students as to how they are doing and how much work is needed to be
done before their public exams. Students have been advised on the many revision websites that are available to
them and the importance of doing past papers, which are available on the exam board websites to download. It
is essential, especially for the Year 12 students, to plan their time over the Easter holidays well as their exams
start soon after we return.
We would like to thank Miss Manning for organising matches for the Sixth Form to play both in hockey and
football. Both teams had really good matches against King John; however, we unfortunately lost both matches.
The hockey especially showed a real improvement in their skill and fitness due to the team being more
committed to training together. After the Easter break they will continue to do water polo after school on a
Thursday. Annabel in Year 13 has won the Jack Petchey Award for this month. During her seven years at the
school, she has been an outstanding ambassador for the PE department and is committed to helping and
supporting younger members of the school.
We would like to thank Billie and Harry in Year 13 for trying to host a
‘Family Fortunes’ style games show for Comic Relief. Harry and Billie
spent a great deal of their time planning the event and trying to sell
tickets; however, the event had to be cancelled due to poor ticket
sales – this certainly was not down to lack of effort.

The Year 13 students will return after the break for the last time
before they start their final exams. There are final arrangements to be
made for leavers’ books, the leaving assembly and the leavers’ meal,
so amid the hard work and stressful times there are lots of exciting
things being planned to wish our Year 13 students well.

As we approach the examination period, it is pleasing to see that the large majority of
students who follow our courses are engaged and working hard. After-school sessions for
controlled assessment and revision are well attended and Years 11, 12 and 13 have just
completed their second set of PPE exams, so should now be focusing on their individual
areas of development.
Year 11 recently attended Sixth Form taster sessions in our various subjects. These were
informative and helped students decide on the most appropriate courses for them. In ICT,
there were two different taster sessions held: one for the BTEC Level 3 course and one for
the A Level course. Mr Elliff introduced some graphics skills using Photoshop for the
BTEC taster, while Mr Bermon introduced the emergence of new technologies and their subsequent impacts
on society. Both sessions were very well attended and many students have now intimated that one of the ICT
courses will form part of their studies next year.
Our Business students have been working really hard this term in preparation for their upcoming exams.
Many congratulations to those who have achieved and exceeded their target grades in the recent PPE exams.
Next term, we look forward to welcoming over 250 students from our local primary schools for our Year 5
Enterprise days. Our Career Academy students have been busy meeting their business mentors and preparing
themselves for their upcoming internships. These internships allow our students to develop new skills and
opportunities and see the real world of work and therefore understand the importance of being responsible
and working hard.
In Applied Learning, Sixth Form students who are studying Travel and Tourism are busy planning their trip to
London at the end of March. The focus of this visit is to show what tourist attractions in London are available
beyond those normally seen by the vast majority of visitors to the capital, and to demonstrate the processes
that take place in the organisation of a trip. As such, the group has investigated and arranged their trip to visit
the London Bridge Experience.
Our Sixth Form Childcare students are currently on block placement for two weeks. This is important because
it allows individuals to apply theory to practice. It is an important element of the course and students are
assessed in the location of their placements as part of their final qualification.
I would like to remind all of our students of the importance of independent revision as part of their
preparations for their exams. This is vital for the success of all students in all year groups for both internal and
external exams.

Hair and Beauty Taster Day
Students visited the school’s bespoke hair and beauty salon to try out hairdressing and beauty therapy.
In beauty therapy they watched a facial being performed and had the opportunity to put what they had seen
into practice. Later, in hairdressing, some students tried putting hair in heated rollers to prepare for a hair-up,
while others tried their hand at cutting hair.

GCSEPod
We have recently launched GCSEPod for Years 10 and 11.
GCSEPod is a unique service, designed to tap into the learning
potential of smartphones and handheld devices.
This is a new and innovative way for students to revise their subjects by
live streaming or downloading podcasts. This is to introduce a new visual and auditory way for students to learn, to
ensure students can access a range of revision materials and have the best possible impact on their GCSE results.
Students can access GCSEPod content directly on the GCSEPod website. Each podcast provides students with
relevant, easy-to-digest information in a tiny file format, meaning that students can add learning content onto
their mobile devices while still leaving room for their own media.
GCSEPod covers nearly all subjects taught at KES, featuring over 4,000 audio-visual podcasts. This provides over
12,000 hours of podcasts and revision material, written by teachers, narrated by professional voiceover artists
and enhanced with text and images to engage students. Each subject topic features several chapters of three to
five minutes, which present students with relevant information.
The scripts are written by teaching experts and are professionally narrated so that they clearly and concisely
cover key learning points; this is coupled with images and diagrams to highlight and consolidate knowledge of
key facts, quotes and keywords. So far, our students have told us that they listen to their chosen podcasts over
and over again, replaying the content until they truly get it. GCSEPod can be a discreet but powerful learning tool,
as students can access this content whenever they want, without anyone else even being aware that they are
studying. Imagine how much extra learning your son or daughter could benefit from through using podcasts when
travelling to and from school, and during their spare time when using social media.
The effect on students is immediate and lasting, as GCSEPod engages with them on the devices they use every
day. This offers students the chance to reconsider where and when learning can take place and moves away
from the more traditional methods of revision that some students struggle with.
So far, we have nearly half of Year 11 students using GCSEPod and other students will be setting up their
accounts in the ICT department in the next few weeks. Year 10 have also been starting to use the system and
they will also be spending time with the department to set up their accounts by the end of this term.
Students need to speak to Mr Bermon if they would like to use GCSEPod.

The Year 10 Child Development students recently took home
real care babies.
They looked at story sacks and the
resources needed to make their own.
They then produced their own story
bags with a range of puppets and
story prompts.
They found the experience challenging and very tiring but it made
them realise that looking after babies is not an easy experience.
Congratulations to Elizabeth, who achieved 100% for the time that
she spent looking after her baby.

‘Wanna Be An Entrepreneur?’ Event
Year 12 Career Academy students were treated to a plethora of inspirational people at this recent event
held in Southend.
A Kayzer flash mob opened the event to the song Uptown Funk, and speakers included: Erkan Ali, Rich With
(a local graphic designer), Julian Hall (the ‘Ultrapreneur’), Thomas Power (a social media expert), Farah Idris
(Philanthropist and EA), Sammy Blindell (brand strategist), James ‘Jimbo’ Sinclair (the million pound clown)
and Billy Schwer (world champion boxer). All of these excellent speakers had their own story to tell and inspired
students to believe in themselves to do what they need to do to have the life they want.
Career Academy Visit to Olympus
Year 12 and 13 Career Academy students recently
enjoyed a workplace visit to Olympus for the day.
Joined by the Career Academy at St Thomas More,
students were given a tour of the manufacturing and
service departments and heard presentations from staff.
They learnt the importance of technology and the need
for constant innovation, as well as learning about the
challenges, risks and rewards of selling medical equipment
in emerging markets. Students saw the importance of
having a second language to offer, as business contacts
across the world have increased.
As the largest employer in the region, outside of the public
sector, Olympus supported students from both schools last
summer with internships. Some of these students gave
presentations to staff to show how much they had gained
from their work placements, while internship supervisors
gave their views on why their colleagues should consider
taking an intern this summer.
It is clear that this is a programme that both students and
companies can jointly benefit from. While the students
increase their employability, confidence and professional
skills, employers feel that having young people within
the business can improve their insights into the future of
the labour market as well as helping them cover summer
holiday staff shortages.

Parent Focus Groups
We are working hard to improve communication with

Jack Petchey Achievement Award
Abigail in Year 8 has won February’s award
and Annabel in Year 13 has won March’s award.
Abigail was nominated last year by her tutor Mrs Dougherty. Abigail goes to a
swimming club every Sunday called SEALS. This group is a group for disabled
swimmers which she helps out at. She has been doing this since she was seven
years old. She has already started spending her £200 in the Technology department.
This is the second time Annabel has been nominated for an award and she is a
really deserving winner after seven years of continuous hard work and commitment,
especially to the PE department. She not only helps coach and train the lower years
in netball and hockey lessons, but she has also started up her own Sixth Form
hockey team and helps them to get to training and their fixtures. She is a real credit
and always gives up her own spare time to help within PE.

Students Create 3D Sculptures
During the February half term Bethany
Thompson in Year 10 decided to use her
Jack Petchey Award to develop her skills
in three-dimensional art by creating a
sculpture based on the artist Jenny Saville.
A group of Year 10 students were also
rewarded by joining her on this great
day. The students were very positive and
demonstrated a real resilience. They tackled
the problems and constraints of working
in 3D and had to challenge themselves to
complete the task. Each student took a risk
to create something that was inspirational
and different.
The same group of Year 10 students now
intend to develop this work further, by taking
a cast of their anatomy and making a real life
sculpture for their GCSE final pieces.
Well done to the group.
Year 10 Work Experience
Year 10 recently completed their two-week work experience.
The comments we received back from students about their experiences have been
fantastic, with many saying that they are now more confident and can do more than
they thought they could. Some said they now pay more attention in class and liked
being able to apply their knowledge to a real business situation.
If they had to give advice to our Year 9 students for next year, it would be to pick something you like, not what
your friends are doing; find your own placement and, above all, do something that really interests you.

Ski Trip
During the half term break, students and staff visited the Pila ski resort in Italy. Whilst there, students were
taught the basics and the more advanced techniques of skiing and snowboarding. The students had an
excellent time and by the end of the week all showed skiing and snowboarding skills. Some of the students
who fell over during the trip and had a particularly good fall were required to wear the ‘stack of the day’ outfit
(which was a giant parrot costume). Special mention has to go to Michael Baker, whose failed attempt at a
front flip ended with landing face first in the snow!

Trip to Walton on the Naze
Year 11 students went on a visit to Walton on the Naze last September.
They collected data on coastal erosion and management for their controlled assessment. They were lucky
enough to have a beautiful sunny day to enjoy the beach and everyone worked very hard.
Valentine’s Meal
Year 13 BTEC Hospitality students Harry Wilks and
Ella Robinson organised our recent Valentine’s
meal, held for family, staff and friends.
A four-course meal started with ‘a quick embrace’
of soup, prawn cocktail or Mediterranean stuffed
peppers. This was then followed by ‘the seduction’: a
choice of sirloin steak, hunters chicken or a heart of
puff pastry filled with vegetables. ‘The interval’ was
lemon sorbet and ‘the proposal’ desserts were an
exotic fruit platter, ‘marry a millionaire’ shortbread or
white chocolate very berry cheesecake.
Visit to London
In December, Year 12 AS students paid a visit to
the regenerated areas of London.
They visited the Crystal Museum, Docklands
Museum, Canary Wharf area and the Olympic Park.
They learnt about the regeneration of these areas
and all enjoyed it thoroughly.
Geographers of the Half Term
The Geographers of the last half term were Alex
Smith in Year 10 and Emily Start in Year 8.

SPORTS NEWS
District Badminton
On Thursday 12 February, the Castle Point and Rochford District Badminton competition took place at The
Deanes School. A squad of eight students represented KES and did themselves and the school proud. Year 8
students: Adam Slayford, Josh King, Billy Edwards, Ryan Bennett. Year 9 students: Reece Harding, Cameron
Jarvis, Jordan Sullens, Mickey Dodkins. The students were paired up into four separate pools and played games
against students from other schools. The Year 8 pairing of Adam Slayford and Josh King and the Year 9 pairing
of Cameron Jarvis and Reece Harding won all their group games, thus progressing through to the semi-finals
before both pairs narrowly lost to the pairing from Sweyne and FitzWimarc. KES was the only school to have two
pairs in the semi-finals and Jordan Sullens and Mickey Dodkins showed the depth of the squad by only losing
one game in their group. A senior squad was unable to participate due to being on work experience.
Hockey
Year 7: On Monday 2 March, the Year 7 girls played in the Year 7 District Hockey rally at The King John School.
The A team came 3rd and the B team came 1st. This was an excellent result and we are confident both teams
are going to combine well to be outstanding next year when they play on a full sided pitch. Well done to all.
Players of the games were Holly Gilligan and Karley Tipper. Squad: Karley Tipper, Harleigh Hall, Holly Dodkins,
Lucy Stowe, Cerys Watson, Keeley Osborne, Jessi Sibinidi, Polly Anna Bradley, Lauren Watson, Remi Ellis,
Jessica Ann Angel, Charlotte Beard, Hattie Marden, Shanai Leonard, Holly Gilligan, Alex Fearon, Kiri Arnold, Faye
Mullane, Alicia Sotolongo, Hadley Stevens, Alicia Paul, and Shannon Sigrist.
Year 8: On Tuesday 10 March, the Year 8 girls took part in the Year 8 District Hockey tournament at The King
John School. The girls showed real promise and worked really hard together as a team, particularly as they
had to play very defensively for the majority of the rally. They really pulled it together in the last game, beating
Cornelius 1–0, resulting in 3rd place. Well done to all. Squad: Maddy Scott, Megan Peck, Constance Lovett,
Abi Druary, Tiggy Francis, Ellianne Driver, Isabella Marshall, Amelia Cheung, Chloe Bowyer, Molly Truman, Layla
Geary, Shay O’Neil, and Molly Eyres.
Year 9: On Tuesday 10 March, the Year 9 girls took part in the Year 9 District Hockey tournament here at KES.
They were against tough opposition and had some nail biting moments in some of the games. However, with
great persistence and team work the team managed to come 3rd overall, which was a fantastic achievement.
A special mention should go to the defensive players and in particular Megan Davis, the goalkeeper, who saved
some amazing shots. They were so impressive that even the teachers from the other schools came over to
congratulate them on their defending. Well done girls; this was a great result. Squad: Megan Davis, Sophie
Brunt, Charlotte Brooks, Emma Partner, Lottie Welham, Nicola Outhwaite, Hollie Wakeman, Shannon Newman,
Ella Nolan, Charli Day, Ellen Liston, Billy Warwick, Shannon Terry, Maddy Vaughan, and Daisy Pallett.
Seniors: On Tuesday 3 March, the Year
10/11 Senior hockey team played in the
Senior District Hockey rally. The girls have
dedicated themselves to hockey over the
last five years and they were a credit to
themselves and the school. The team
lost out to FitzWimarc for the overall win.
Player of the rally was awarded to Abbie
for an outstanding performance in every
game. She dominated the games,
keeping the control and accuracy of her
tackles and passes to near perfection.
Captain of the rally was Molly Nock who led her team throughout the afternoon. Well done to all. Squad: Katie
Taylor Prior, Molly Nock, Lauren Dyer, Abbie Rex, Ami Bull, Neve Barr, Ellise Johnson, Sasha Potgieter, Jordan
Hauser, Chelsea Parker, Sarah-Jane Earwicker, Isabella Tisdall, Chloe Griffiths, and Deborah Smith.
Helpers: A special mention should go to the following three girls who gave up their own time to help out at the
Year 8 and 9 hockey rallies: Sarah-Jane Earwicker, Chloe Griffiths and Annabel Matthews-Smith. All three were a
big help to the PE faculty and stayed after the game. The schools in the district were pleased with how well the
rallies were run and this was thanks to their professionalism and commitment to KES.

Futsal
The Year 11 Futsal team got through to
the semi-final stage of the Essex Futsal
Championships on Thursday 12 February
in London. Although they lost out to last
year’s National champions, The Eastbury
School from East London, it was an amazing,
enthusiastic and passionate performance
from our boys. The only goal scored was in
the last 30 seconds of the game. Our team
was demoralised to have come so close but
conducted themselves wonderfully and were a
credit to the school. Congratulations to all
of them.
Year 13 BTEC (Double Award) Students
On Tuesday 5 March, some of the Year 13 double BTEC
students went to Canewdon primary school to teach and
coach the Year 6 students there. This was part of their unit
5. The students did not just pass their unit, but the staff
at Canewdon were significantly impressed. Our students
were organised, professional and executed their 40-minute
sessions like professionals. When observing the students,
they showed qualities of a trainee teacher. We are hoping
that the enjoyment and comments received after these
sessions will inspire these students to continue their
further education path, as some could make careers in
education, and I know some of them are still deciding on
their future paths. Well done to all the students.

We would like to remind all those who aim to compete that it is essential to attend all the training sessions. The
squads will be selected from those who attend regularly and work hard. Good luck to all who take part.
KES Sports
All competitions take place after school. Players of all abilities are welcome and students can earn points for their
House: Romans, Vikings or Saxons.
Dates for the upcoming events are as follows:

• Boys’ Cricket and Girls’ Rounders – Thursday 25 June
