Cut the off-cut into 5 ½ inch bits.
Use the sealant to glue these off-cuts into the base of
the clay pot to form support for the filter insert.
Filter base in place ready for airline lift pipe, plastic tye
passed through hole drilled in airlift pipe to prevent
airstone,if used, sitting on the bottom of the clay pot.
Push the airlift pipe through base and use sealant to
seal in place.
The filters have been in use for over 12 months without the need to change, algae growth encouraged by the clay

COMMENTS / ADAPTIONS
- by Derrick Clayton
I made some filters with the insert Derek describes above but with my limited D. I. Y. skills I found it easier to use a
small plastic plant pot cut to size, drilled and inverted. 21.5mm pipe and 20mm drill bit ment no sealant needed and
cutting the airlift pipe at an angle I have not found the need to fit cable tyes—so far. I have used ceramic round the
inverted pot before filling with fine gravel, using different size clay pots depending on tank size. Airlift pipe can be cut to
any length but if cut to stand about 50cm (2”) above pot Java moss can be tied round with fishing line to hide.
