PETER, PAUL AND MARY (& other Saints)
A
ilgrimage in France & Italy
7th – 23rd/25th July 2014
WITH OPTIONAL FATIMA EXTENSION
Escorted by Fr Wim Hoekstra
The Catholic Tradition has always held in honour and valued the lives of the saints, and this pilgrimage will explore the lives of
some of the great saints of the Church and visit places associated with them – Mary (Lourdes), Peter and Paul (Rome), Therese
of Lisieux, Catherine of Siena and Francis of Assisi. So come and join with me in this pilgrimage as we follow in the footsteps of
“the witnesses who have preceded us into the kingdom” (Hebrews 12.1, Catechism of the Catholic Church 2683).
DAY 1: Monday 7th July
DAY 7: Sunday 13th July
Depart Sydney in the evening for Dubai with Emirates where the
group will change for the flight to Paris.
Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant. You will have the opportunity to attend the English Mass which takes place at 09.00 hours. Full
day in Lourdes for personal exploration and reflection. Following the
reports that Our Lady of Lourdes appeared to Bernadette Soubirous
on a total of eighteen occasions, Lourdes has become a major
place of Roman Catholic pilgrimage and of miraculous healings.
The 150th Jubilee of the first apparition took place on 11 February
2008 with an outdoor mass attended by record numbers of pilgrims.
Today Lourdes has a population of around 15,000 but is able to take
in some 5,000,000 pilgrims and tourists every season. Dinner tonight
is in the hotel restaurant. After dinner, there will be an option of
walking about 1500 metres to the Sanctuary for the Torchlight
Procession.
LEAVE AUSTRALIA
DAY 2: Tuesday 8th July
ARRIVE IN PARIS
On arrival (at about 12:30hrs) make your way through to the arrivals
hall where you will be met by your driver who will show you to the
coach. On the way to your hotel, there will be an opportunity to
view Paris from the Seine by taking a Seine River Cruise. After the
cruise, you will be taken to the Hotel St Severin (or similar) where
accommodation has been arranged for the next 4 nights on a
dinner, bed and breakfast basis. The remainder of the day has been
left free for personal exploration. Dinner tonight is in the hotel restaurant.
DAY 3: Wednesday 9th July
PARIS
Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant. Meet your coach, driver
and guide for a full day panoramic tour of secular and historic Paris.
You will be shown this beautiful city and all the famous monuments
and sights including the Eiffel Tower, The Tuileries, the Louvre, Notre
Dame, Montmartre, Sacre Coeur and the Arc de Triomphe. You will
have time to make stops for visits and photographs. We hope to
have a visit to the Eiffel Tower. Dinner tonight is in the hotel restaurant.
DAY 4: Thursday 10th July
PARIS
Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant. This morning is free for
personal sightseeing and shopping! Early afternoon, meet your
coach and driver at the hotel where we will be taken to the Sacre
Coeur for a private Mass, this will take place at 14.00 hours. After
Mass we will take a closer look at religious Paris. We will start at Sacre
Coeur, then onto Notre Dame Cathedral, St Madeleine’s Church,
the Rue de Bac (for St Catherine Laboure) and close by the Vincentian Father’s place and the bones of St Vincent de Paul. Dinner
tonight is in the hotel restaurant.
DAY 5: Friday 11th July
LISIEUX
Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant. Meet your coach and
driver for the transfer to Lisieux, home of Ste Therese. On arrival you
will be met by a local guide for a tour. A visit to the Basilica of Ste
Therese has been arranged. The large basilica can accommodate
4,000 people, and with more than two million visitors a year, is the
second largest pilgrimage site in France, after Lourdes. A visit to St
Peter’s Cathedral has also been arranged which is often compared
to Notre Dame. It was the family church of Ste Therese and her
family and has a chapel now dedicated to her. We hope to be able
to organise a Mass here. If there is time there will also be a visit to Les
Buissonets, (Ste Therese’s home). Re-join the coach and travel back
to Paris. Dinner tonight is in the hotel restaurant.
DAY 6: Saturday 12th July

and meet your coach and driver for the transfer to Paris Orly airport.

of the hotel and meet your coach and driver for the transfer to
Toulouse airport for your flight to Rome. Fly to Rome. On arrival in
Rome, pass through immigration and customs to the arrival hall
where you will be met by your coach driver for the transfer to Rome.
You will be taken to the Hotel Nova Domus (or similar) where
accommodation has been arranged on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis for the next three nights. Subject to time of arrival it should
be possible to attend one of the Masses held daily at St Peter’s.
Dinner tonight will be in the hotel.
DAY 9: Tuesday 15th July
ROME
Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant. Mass at St Peter’s (after
breakfast) which is within walking distance of the hotel. The coach
can then pick up from St Peter’s. Depart by coach after breakfast
with your guide for a full day’s sightseeing in Rome dedicated to
Archaeological Rome, the Colosseum, Roman Forum Pantheon,
Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna, Trevi Fountain and more. Short
break for lunch in the city centre before continuing to the Basilica of
St Paul-outside-the Walls, one of the five great Basilicas of Rome. It
was originally built in the fourth century AD, on the site believed to
be the final resting place of St Paul. Over the centuries it was
extended and re-modelled until 1823, when workmen spilt burning
tar, starting a fire which largely destroyed the building. It was soon
rebuilt, and passed officially into the hands of the Vatican as part of
the 1929 Lateran treaties. Later this afternoon return to hotel for
dinner and overnight.
DAY 10: Wednesday 16th July
ROME
Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant. Mass at St Peter’s again
this morning, then the guide can meet you here and accompany
you to the Papal Audience. Meet the Official Guide, who will
accompany the group for a short walk from St Peter’s to the Vatican
for a Papal Audience, which is held in the morning at 10:00hrs. After
the Papal Audience continue with your official Roman Guide to the
Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel and on to St Peter’s Basilica,
the major Basilica of the Vatican City, an enclave of Rome. St.
Peter's was until recently the largest church ever built and it remains
one of the holiest sites in Christendom. St Peter’s Basilica is the
resting place of the remains of St Peter. Overnight and dinner in
hotel.
DAY 11: Thursday 17th July
ROME - ASSISI
Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant. After breakfast check out
of the hotel, meet your coach and driver and depart for the Catacombs of St Callistus, this is approx. 30 minutes’ drive. You will also
visit the Scavi. Continue to Ostia Antica where you will meet your
guide for a guided tour. After the tour, re-join the coach and travel
to Ostia for lunch. After lunch, re-join the coach for the journey to
Assisi. On arrival you will then be taken to the Hotel Fontebella (or
similar) where accommodation has been arranged for 2 nights on a
dinner, bed and breakfast basis.
DAY 12: Friday 18th July
ASSISI
Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant. After breakfast, meet
your guide and enjoy a full day sightseeing in Assisi, including visits to
the Basilica of Santa Chiara, Oratoria di San Francesco Piccolino,
Basilica of St Mary of the Angels and the Duomo di San Rufino. You
will need to be transported by minibus to the church of San
Damiano for Mass (this is a 800m climb!) After Mass you will have a
tour of the church of San Damiano and the Porziuncola. You will
then be transported back down to your waiting coach. The coach
will then take you for your visit to Rocca Maggiore as this is not
walkable. Dinner tonight is in the hotel restaurant.
DAY 13: Saturday 19th July
ASSISI - FLORENCE
Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant. This morning, after checking out of the hotel, meet your coach and driver for transfer to
Siena. Take the scenic drive through the delightful hills of the Chianti
countryside, offering an ever-changing scenery of vineyards and
olive trees. Spot the medieval hamlet of Monteriggioni. Upon arrival
in Siena you will take a guided tour of the old town along its narrow
medieval streets to admire the splendid palaces reaching the
magnificent Cathedral with its superb interior and amazing frescoes.
The tour ends in its most beautiful square, Piazza del Campo, of
which the Palazzo Pubblico town hall is the focal point. Mass first
then lunch (for the group) before continuing to Florence. Subject to
Mass times. On arrival in Florence you will be taken to the Hotel
Cellai (or similar) where accommodation has been arranged for the
next two nights on a bed and breakfast basis. We would suggest
the group drops off bags at the hotel and walks to the Duomo (5-10
mins) as it is not possible for the coach to stop outside the church, so
it would make sense to drop luggage and then attend the English
Vigil Mass – time permitting of course. Dinner tonight will be at a
trattoria in central Florence.
DAY 14: Sunday 20th July
FLORENCE
Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant. This morning you will take
a walking tour of the city in the morning with an official Guide; you
will visit the Accademia and the Uffizi Gallery, the Duomo, Florence's
Cathedral, the Ponte Vecchio and the church of Santa Maria
Novella dedicated to Our Lady. The Accademia houses Michelangelo's David, easily the most famous sculpture in the world. Once
inside, you'll also see Michelangelo's unfinished and powerful Prisoners, along with a few works by Perugino, Giambologna, and
Botticelli. The famous Duomo Cathedral dome dominates the
skyline of Florence, with its eight white ribs against a background of
terracotta tiles. The Uffizi Gallery is one of the world's top art museums - it houses some of the most important works of the Renaissance, including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto, Botticelli and
Michelangelo. We would suggest the Sunday Mass at the Duomo if
time runs out on Saturday. The Mass is at 17.15 hours and is really
special as it is sung by the Gregorian Monks and is a unique experience. Dinner tonight will be at a trattoria in central Florence.
DAY 15: Monday 21st July
FLORENCE - MILAN
Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant. Depending on flight time,
it may be possible to attend one of the four morning Masses at the
Duomo before departure. After breakfast, check out of the hotel
and meet your coach and driver for a visit to Pisa, and its Leaning
Tower, and afterwards travel to Milan’s Malpensa Airport for your
flight back to Australia via Dubai (or continue to Fatima for a 2 night
extension in Portugal).
