Holy Land
see the scriptures come alive
The Holy Land is universally known as the first Marian Shrine. The
significance of the Holy Land relates back to the beginning of Our
Lady’s life as the Mother of our Saviour. The Holy Land allows
you to see the Scriptures come alive and see where Jesus began his
ministry.
This journey will truly enlighten your prayers and your understanding
of what you are praying for. We will follow in the footsteps of Jesus
and discover this unique and spiritual land with visits to Tiberias,
Cana, Nazareth, Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
For 2016 Marian Pilgrimages are delighted to announce that our
direct charter series to Tel Aviv will begin on the 2nd October. We
will fly from Dublin, Cork, Shannon and Belfast on selected dates.

Jerusalem & Bethlehem
Tiberias & Sea of Galilee
Jerusalem:
Pater Noster Church built in the 4th century, stands on the
original site where Jesus taught the disciples the Lord’s Prayer.
The Via Dolorosa, also known at the Path of Sorrow, is
traditionally known as the road that Jesus carried the Cross to
Calvary. The road starts were Jesus was tried and convicted and
condemned to be crucified. The 14 Stations of the Cross are
based on events that occurred while Jesus was carrying the Cross
to Calvary. We will walk the Via Dolorosa to the site where He
was crucified on the Hill of Golgotha. Situated on the Hill of
Golgotha stands the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Known as
the holiest place in the Christian world, the church stands on the
site where Jesus was crucified and the tomb in which He was
buried. The room of the Last Supper is located above the Tomb
of David and Mount Zion. It is believed to be the room where
Jesus and His Disciples shared His last supper the night before
His capture.
Galilee:
The Mount of Beatitudes is located on the shores of the Sea
of Galilee. According to tradition, this is the location where
Jesus delivered His most important sermon, the "Sermon on the
Mount." Today, there stands a Franciscan Church on the original
site.
Garden of Gethsemane:
Located directly next to the Church of All Nations lies the
Garden of Gethsemane. According to Christian tradition the
Garden of Gethsemane is where Jesus spent His last night. After
the Last Supper, Jesus and His disciples left the city of Jerusalem
and travelled here where they prayed until the guards, led by
Judas, came to arrest Jesus.
Bethlehem:
Located just 5 miles from Jerusalem lies the town of Bethlehem,
the birthplace of Jesus Christ. One of the oldest surviving
churches in Bethlehem is the Church of the Nativity. Built over
a grotto, it is believed to be the site where the Virgin Mary gave
birth to Jesus. Close to Manger Square lies the Milk Grotto.
This is where Mary, St. Joseph and Baby Jesus took refuge from
Herod's soldiers while fleeing to Egypt. Located 2km from
Bethlehem, lies the Shepherds Fields. Traditionally it is said that
the Angels of the Lord visited the shepherds in these fields to
inform them of Baby Jesus' birth. The churches of St. Jerome
and the Holy Innocents are located in Bethlehem also.
Tabgha:
Located in Tabgha is the Church of the Multiplication of the
Loaves and the Fish. According to tradition this is the site
where Jesus miraculously multiplied 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish
into enough food to feed 5000 people. See the church with its
beautiful mosaics of fish and a bread basket symbolising this
miracle.
Capernaum:
Capernaum was Jesus' home base during his ministry. The
Apostles also lived here. See the ruins of the local Synagogue
that Jesus taught in and also the excavations of St. Peter's mother
in law's house.
Mount Tabor:
Mount Tabor also known as the Mount of Transfiguration, is
believed to be the site of the transfiguration where an exchange
took place between Jesus with Elijah and Moses.
Cana:
North of Nazareth lies the village of Cana, the location where
Jesus performed His first miracle. Jesus turned a large quantity
of water into wine when the wine ran out at a wedding He and
His disciples were attending.
Nazareth:
The Basilica of the Annunciation is located in the heart of the
city of Nazareth. It is said to be built over the site of the Virgin
Mary’s house and where Angel Gabriel told Our Lady that she
would give birth to Jesus. The current building of St. Joseph’s
Church was constructed in 1914. This small church stands over
the remains of St. Joseph’s carpentry workshop and the house
of the Holy Family. It contains storage pits that may date back
from the time of Jesus. Visit also the Cave, home of the Holy
Family and Mary's Well, which was the main source of water
for the city and where it is believed that Mary fetched water and
bathed Baby Jesus.

Medjugorje
Our Lady's mission is one of peace and love
Since 1981, in a small village in Bosnia-Herzegovina named Medjugorje, the Blessed Virgin Mary has been appearing and
giving messages to the world. In her own words she tells us, "I have come to tell the world that God exists. He is the fullness
of life, and to enjoy this fullness and peace, you must return to God". The following is an account of the beginning of the
Apparitions;
On the 24th June 1981, on the hill known as Podbrdo (Apparition Hill) six children, Ivanka Ivankovic, Mirjana Dragicevic,
Vicka Ivankovic, Ivan Dragicevic, Ivan Ivankovic and Milka Pavlovic saw a beautiful young woman carrying a little child in
her arms. They were frightened at what they saw and did not come closer, even though the woman beckoned them closer.
They knew this woman was Our Lady.
The following day, the 25th of June 1981, the children went to the same place where Our Lady had appeared the previous
day in hope of seeing her again. However, the group of children
had changed somewhat; Ivan Ivankovic and Milka
Pavlovic were replaced by two others, Marija Pavlovic and
Jakov Colo. With the flash of a light, the six children
looked up and saw Our
Lady, this time without the child.
When they reached her, they fell to their knees and
began to pray with Our
Lady. Before Our Lady left the
children, she said, "God be with you my angels!"
There has been only 5 days
where no apparitions occurred.
Medjugorje has been a place of peace, hope and
inspiration for so many.
The Word of God is alive in
Medjugorje as well as conversion. 2016 marks the
35th
anniversary
of
the
apparitions
in
Medjugorje.

Marian Pilgrimages &
Medjugorje
Marian Pilgrimages is Ireland’s first and foremost
Medjugorje Specialist. For more than 25 years our
experience in organising pilgrimages to this religious
shrine has been unsurpassed.
Day 2 - Opening Meeting
After breakfast, Holy Mass for English speaking pilgrims is at
10.00am in the church of St. James. Following mass there will be
an opening meeting and introduction at the shrine of Our Lady
Queen of Peace. Hear a talk by one of the Medjugorje priests on
the messages of Our Lady. Continue to the Statue of the Risen
Lord for a prayer service. After dinner, participate in the evening
programme.
Our Lady has come to earth to re-educate us and to help us
convert and re-centre our lives back to God. Her role has
always been one of guiding people to her Son, Jesus. What a
fantastic opportunity we have before us! It is important that we
understand both the magnitude and the urgency of Our Lady's
call to conversion, and that we respond to it with all our hearts.
Day 3 - Hill of Apparitions
Meet with your guides at the statue of Our Lady to walk through
the vineyards, to the Hill of Apparitions (Podbrdo). Listen to
the story of the first days of the apparitions and then climb, in
prayer, to the site of the first apparition. We return for dinner,
followed by the evening services at 6pm.
Please see below for our sample itinerary to Medjugorje.
This itinerary is based on the Summer programme. For 2016
the Summer programme begins on the 1st June and ends on
Krizevac. For pilgrims travelling during the Winter season the
times will be an hour earlier.
Day 4 - Cenacolo
Our guides will take us to meet with one of the visionaries
(if available), for a talk on the messages of Our Lady. This
afternoon our guides will take us to Cenacolo, which is a
community for recovering drug addicts. After dinner, meet at St.
James for the evening programme.
Medjugorje Sample
Itinerary
The Marian Pilgrimages itinerary, devised with the pilgrims needs
in mind, balances prayer and activity in each day. The staple
element in the daily programme is the evening prayer service.
After the evening meal, gather at St. James for the Rosary (Joyful
and Sorrowful Mysteries) at 6pm. It is then followed with Holy
Mass at 7pm. The Glorious Mysteries and Healing Prayers are
at 8pm and on Fridays, the Veneration of the Cross is at 8pm.
Tuesdays at 10pm, Thursdays at 8pm and Saturdays at 10pm sees
the Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrement. The time of
the apparition of Our Lady is usually marked by a moment of
silence at 6.40pm.
Holy Mass, for English speaking pilgrims, is at 10am from
Monday to Saturday and Holy Mass on Sunday and holidays is
at 12 noon.
Day 1 - Arrive Medjugorje

Lourdes
what I have to say to you does not
have to be written down
On the 11th of February 1858, Bernadette Soubirous
witnessed a beautiful apparition in a small village in
France known as Lourdes. While gathering wood by
the Grotto, Bernadette first saw a vision of Our Lady
surrounded by brilliant light. Too frightened to approach
her, Bernadette prayed the Rosary while Our Lady looked
on in quiet approval. Our Lady then disappeared. It was
not until her third visit to the Grotto that she spoke. She
asked Bernadette to come to the Grotto for fifteen days.
Bernadette did as requested and listened to the messages
Our Lady delivered from God. In these messages He
asks His children to pray for sinners and repent. During
the apparitions Our Lady gave Bernadette a mission; She
requested that Bernadette tell the priests to build a chapel
and come in procession to Lourdes.
During the 9th apparition, the discovery of the miraculous
spring in the Grotto was made by Bernadette. Its waters
are said to have healing powers and many miraculous
healings to this day are attributed to it. Bernadette was
scrutinised and questioned by hundreds of people on a
daily basis. Cure Peyramale, the local pastor, accused
Bernadette of lying about the apparitions and demanded
that she ask Our Lady to identify herself. On the feast of
the Annunciation, Our Lady declared to Bernadette “I
am the Immaculate Conception”. It was then that people
ceased accusing Bernadette of lies. The apparitions lasted
until July 1858. There were 18 apparitions in total and 2008
marked the anniversary of the 150th year of Lourdes.
By decree of
Monsignor
Brouwet,
Bishop of
Tarbes and Lourdes,
Lourdes will be a Jubilee
Centre in 2016. As Pope
Francis said “This is
the opportune moment
to change our lives! This is
the time to allow our hearts to be
touched!”

Lourdes 2016 Jubilee of Mercy Itinerary
For the 2016 season to Lourdes we have a number of
different options available. Pilgrimages to Lourdes
are for 3, 4, 5 or 7 days. Please see below for a sample
itinerary for our standard and most popular five night
Lourdes pilgrimage. For specific dates and prices
have a look at the price grid on page 21, and for
comprehensive itineraries for each date please contact
our office in Dublin, or log on to www.marian.ie/lourdes.
A passport will be given, in the Sanctuary, to pilgrims who
have come for the Jubilee of Mercy: conceived in the
Middle Ages for pilgrims who went on pilgrimage for several
months, the passport indicates the journey undertaken by
the pilgrim, physically and spiritually.
Day 3 - Become Merciful
After Mass this morning, we will take part in the Stations of the
Cross. In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the baths where
hundreds of miraculous healings have taken place. We will
participate in the blessing of the sick. After dinner take part in
the evening torchlight procession which is extremely impressive.
Day 4 - Optional Tours
This morning will be free in Lourdes. You are free to relax or
visit some of the sites yourself. Perhaps visit the Grotto of
Massabeille and see where the apparitions took place. After
lunch there will be an optional tour to Bartres , to celebrate Mass
and venerate the relic of St. Bernadette.
We have devised the sample itinerary below in consultation
with the Sanctuary of Lourdes, who have put in place
special events and Masses to promote and celebrate the
Special Jubilee year of Mercy. During our pilgrimage we
will have time to receive the Sacrament of Confession;
drink at the fountains and visit the Baths. Take part
in the Blessing of the Sick procession and walk in the
Torchlight procession. The Mass of Mercy will take place
on Wednesdays and Sundays in the underground Basilica
of St Pius X.
Day 5 - Be a witness of Mercy
We will have free time after breakfast to explore Lourdes
ourselves. Visit the Basilica of the Rosary or the Basilica of the
Immaculate Conception. Drink from the spring at the base of
the Grotto. The original spring that Bernadette located is still
visible. It is protected by a glass cover and illuminated by a light.
This evening after dinner, we will purchase a special candle
for the group and depart for the Grotto. We leave our candle
among the others so our flame continues our prayer after we
leave Lourdes. Afterwards we again will take part in the evening
torchlight procession.
Day 1 - Arrive Lourdes
Check in at Dublin, Cork, Shannon or Belfast airport, where
our local representative will be on hand to assist you. On arrival
in France you will be met by our local guide and transferred
to your accommodation. Check into your hotel for 5 nights on
a full board basis. Evening opening Mass, obtain the passport,
walk through the Door of Mercy and say a prayer at the Grotto.
Day 6 - Depart Lourdes
After breakfast we celebrate morning Mass. We will be collected
by our coaches mid morning and transferred to the airport for
our return flight to Ireland.
Day 2 - Open Yourself to Mercy
Morning Mass. After lunch take a walking tour of the town of
Lourdes. We will visit the Boly Mill, where Bernadette was born
and see the Cachot, an abandoned prison where Bernadette’s
family lived. See the hospice, where she made her First Holy
Communion. After the apparitions, Bernadette lived in the
hospice until she went to Nevers, to join the Sisters of Charity
of Nevers. We will visit the Parish church and see Bernadette’s
original baptismal font. In the cemetery we will see the grave of
her family.
Please note that the above itinerary is a sample itinerary only. Please log on to

Shrines of Italy
home to elaborate depictions of the life
of Our Lord and Our Lady
As the heart of one of the world's most significant religions,
Italy has always been a destination for those who have made
their faith a way of life and who wish to explore the roots
of a world that has produced art, architecture and objects of
inestimable value.
Italy is a land of pilgrimage - one of the foremost in the world
- and is home to countless places of devotion and worship: San
Giovanni Rotondo, the city where St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina
lived and worked; Assisi, the city of St. Francis, with its
impressive basilicas and the Sanctuary of the Holy House
of Loreto, one of the most prominent spiritual centres in
Europe. But the ultimate destination for religious pilgrimages
is undoubtedly Rome, the Capital of Christianity and Seat of
the Papacy, where one can find St. Peter's Basilica, the largest
Christian church in the world.
In this extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy it is the wish of
Pope Francis that we will be able to find the joy of rediscovering
and rendering fruitful God’s mercy. He asks us not to forget
that God will watch over our journey: our penitential journey,
our year-long journey with an open heart, to receive the
indulgence of God, to receive the mercy of God.

Shrines of Italy Destinations
Marian Pilgrimages are offering numerous different Italian pilgrimages for the 2016 season. Please see a description of
the towns and cities we visit below and on the following pages. For the pilgrimages we are offering in 2016 we will visit a
combination of the destinations detailed. To select your preferred pilgrimage please see page 29. Alternatively you can call us

Rome
Often described as a ‘city and a sanctuary’, Rome is an abundance of historical and religious sites.
Rome, the Eternal City, has a history and an appeal like no other city in the world. Ancient
structures such as the Coliseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon recall Rome's time as the fearsome
hub of the Roman Empire, while catacombs and impressive churches hark back to the early days
of Christianity. Since the arrivals of Christians, Rome's abundance of ancient temples, churches
and shrines make it one of the best cities to explore the holy places of a variety of religious
traditions.
Being the cradle of the Catholic Church, Rome
has a large number of valuable, sacred places of
worship. Crowded with architectural splendours
from different periods of time, each church and
basilica represents a significant part of Rome's culture and history.
St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the most sacred places in Christendom contains a unique
collection of artistic and architectural masterpieces, the fruit of the combined genius of
Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo and Bernini. Erected over the tomb of St. Peter the
Apostle, it is the greatest of the city's monumental basilicas, the largest religious building
in the world and seat of the Pope, the Vicar of Christ.
Jubilee of Mercy
The Jubilee of Mercy will be a major event in the Catholic
Church, held from the Feast of the Immaculate Conception
(December 8), 2015 to the Feast of Christ the King (November
20), 2016.
To go on a pilgrimage to Rome is an opportunity to reflect on
the meaning of the Church. The practice of pilgrimage has a
special place in the Holy Year, because it represents the journey
each of us makes in this life.
To reach the Holy Door in Rome each person will have to
make a pilgrimage - by crossing the threshold of the Holy
Door, anyone who enters will experience the love of God who
consoles, pardons, and instils hope.

San Giovanni Rotondo
Founded in the year 1095, on the ruins of a former village of the 4th century, the southern
Italian town of San Giovanni Rotondo is now home to the second most visited Catholic
Shrine in the world.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the arrival of Padre Pio to San Giovanni Rotondo.
Within two years of his arrival at the tiny capuchin friary the humble friar would receive
the Stigmata and become the first priest of the Catholic Church to bear the wounds of
Christ. Described by Pope Francis as a ‘perfect example of an untiring, welcoming and patient
confessor’, Padre Pio soon drew many pilgrims from Italy and abroad who came to assist at
his Mass and confess to the friar. Although it is over 40 years since his death, millions of pilgrims continue to arrive at San Giovanni
Rotondo to pray at the crypt of the saint.
Hotel Colonne
The family run Hotel Colonne enjoys a prime location just a five minute walk from the

Assisi
Situated on the slopes of Mount Subasio in the heart of Italy, Assisi is famous as the
birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare. This simple and peaceful town holds religious,
historical and artistic significance. A walk through the medieval town with its quaint
cobblestone streets and alleys will take you to the 13th century Basilica of St. Francis with
the impressive frescoes of Cimabue, Simone Martini and Giotto. With such structures
including the Cathedral of San Rufino, Basilica of St. Clare and the Basilica of Santa Maria
degli Angeli, UNESCO collectively designated the Franciscan structures of Assisi as World
Heritage Sites. Following the discoveries of the bodies of St. Francis and St. Clare, Assisi
has become a destination for pilgrims who come to pray at the tombs of the two saints.
Hotel Domus Pacis
Hospitality, kindness and a warm welcome will be the experience of the visitor
to the Domus Pacis. Combined with its location within the shadow of the
Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the Domus Pacis offers a truly unique
and memorable stay to those arriving in the Umbrian town to visit the places
associated with the lives of St. Francis and St. Clare. The modern structure,
under the direction of the Franciscan friars, with classically furnished rooms,
provides the guest with a high standard of accommodation and amenities
including a quality restaurant, a combined café/bar and onsite gift shop. The
tranquillity of the landscaped gardens will further provide an opportunity to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere associated with the

Pietrelcina
Pietrelcina, the birthplace of Francesco Forgione, the future Padre Pio, has become a popular
place of pilgrimage. In this picturesque hill-top town the room where Francesco was born,
the Church of Sant’Anna where he was baptised and the parish church where he celebrated
his first Mass can all be found. Despite the number of visitors to the town, Pietrelcina has
remained unspoilt and helps pilgrims understand how the simplicity of his youth helped
Padre Pio maintain his humility in the years following him receiving the Stigmata.
Monte Sant’Angelo
The small town of Monte Sant’Angelo is home to the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated
to the Archangel Michael and associated with apparitions of the Archangel that took place in the
fourth century. The sacred cave has been a popular place of pilgrimage for many centuries and has
been visited by numerous Popes and Saints, including St. Francis of Assisi, St. Pio of Pietrelcina
and St. John Paul II.
Lanciano
The medieval town of Lanciano is the site of the first Eucharistic Miracle of the Catholic
church. The miracle dates back to the 8th century and took place in the Church of St.
Legontian as a Basilian monk was struggling with his faith, doubting the real presence of Jesus
in the Eucharist. At the two-fold consecration the bread turned into real flesh and the wine
into real blood, restoring the monk’s faith. Since 1713 the Host-Flesh has been preserved in
an artistic silver Ostensorium and is now kept on display for veneration in the Church of San
Francesco in Lanciano.
Loreto
Tradition recounts that the Holy House of Loreto is the same walled chamber of Our Lady that
existed in Nazareth where Mary was born, brought up, received the Annunciation and lived during
the childhood of Jesus. In 1294 three shepherds witnessed the Holy House flying over the sea
toward them. The Holy House settled in Loreto where it has stayed ever since and is the site of
many miracles.
Materdomini
The origins of the sanctuary date back to when St. Alphonsus de Liguori, founder of the
Redemptorist Order, built a convent on the site. Its construction was given a significant
contribution by an individual who undoubtedly played the most important role in making
Materdomini famous since its beginning: St. Gerard Majella. Destroyed by an earthquake
in 1980 the Shrine of St. Gerard Majella was rebuilt and now at the foot of the altar the urn
with the body of the saint can be found. As patron saint of expectant mothers and unborn
children, millions of pilgrims continue to flock to the shrine at Materdomini.
Mugnano del Cardinale
The town of Mugnano del Cardinale is home to the shrine of St. Philomena, the young Greek
princess, martyred in the 4th century. Following the discovery of her tomb at the Catacombs of
St. Priscilla in 1802 and the translation of her remains to Mugnano del Cardinale many miracles
were recorded. In 1837 Pope Gregory XVI canonised St. Philomena based on the miracles which
had taken place after her death. The shrine today holds the sacred body of St. Philomena, the tiles
from her tomb and the Miraculous Altar. It has been visited by many saints over the centuries and
attracts pilgrims from worldwide each year.

Fatima
Our lady was brighter than the sun,
shedding rays of light
Fatima, a world famous Marian shrine located in
Portugal, saw the beginning of apparitions to Francisco,
Jacinta and Lucia in 1917. Our Lady’s appearance
was preceded by an angel, who appeared to the three
children a number of times in 1916. The Blessed Virgin
appeared on the 13th day of every month between May
and October at Cova de Iria. She delivered messages
from God, the overriding message was for all mankind
to return to God and to make reparation for their sins.
She also revealed three secrets to the children and
stressed the importance of praying the Rosary in each
of her apparitions. In her June appearance, Our Lady
told Lucia that she would take Francisco and Jacinta
to Heaven soon but that Lucia was to stay on earth to
make Our Lady better known and loved. The people of
Fatima, local authorities and even some of their families
did not believe that such apparitions were taking place.
On the 13th August, on their way to Cova de Iria, the
children were captured by the local authorities and
held in jail. The local authorities demanded that they
reveal the secrets. However, even though they were
interrogated and threatened with death, the children
refused to disclose any information. Our Lady appeared
to the children at Valinhos, after they returned from
prison. In October the “miracle of the sun” took place.
As Our Lady was about to leave, the sun began whirling
in the sky and seemed to plunge towards the ground.
Thousands of spectators, who were present during
the apparition, suddenly became terrified and fell to
their knees in prayer. It was reported that numerous
healings took place during this time. Today Fatima is
a worldwide place of pilgrimage, thousands of people
flock here every year to pray to Our Lady and Our Lord.

Shrines of France Destinations
Our pilgrimages to the Shrines of France will include visits to some or all of the destinations below. For detailed itineraries
for our Shrines of France pilgrimages please contact our office in Dublin, or logon to www.marian.ie/france.
Paris
During our tour of Paris we will see some of the finest examples of architecture France
has to offer. We will see Paris’ most famous landmark, the Eiffel Tower. The tower was
built in 1889 for the World Exhibition and when construction was completed in 1889, the
Eiffel Tower was the tallest structure in the world. We will take a stroll down the famous
Champs Elysees, which is bordered with shops, restaurants and theatres before coming
to the L’Arc de Triomphe. See the Sacre Couer basilica built in the 19th century and
dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. And visit Notre Dame, a Gothic Roman Catholic
Cathedral which is still an active Catholic church in Paris today.
Lisieux
St. Therese of Lisieux is known widely as “the little flower of Jesus”. She declares that her conversion
took place on Christmas Eve 1886 and she felt a strong calling to become a nun. At the age of 15 she
was allowed to enter the Carmelite convent. St. Therese embraced convent life with enthusiasm. She
fell ill in 1896. Her last months were painful but she accepted her pain in a spirit of love. She died in
1897 and was canonised in 1925. St. Therese wrote an account of her short life which was published
after her death. We will visit her childhood home at Les Buisonnetts. There on display, are clothing
and personal objects belonging to the "little flower." We also see the Carmelite convent, where she
spent nearly 10 years and the great Basilica dedicated to her. In October 2015 her parents, Zelie and
Louis Martin were canonised in Rome by Pope Francis.
Nevers
In Nevers we will visit the Convent of St. Gildard where we will see the incorrupt body of St.
Bernadette. St. Bernadette entered the Sisters of Charity of Nevers in 1866 as she wanted to
dedicate her life to religion. She worked in the convent hospital even though she suffered illness
herself including asthma and tuberculosis. St. Bernadette died in 1879 after spending 13 years in the
convent of St. Gildard. In 1925 her body was exhumed and was found to be incorrupt and she was
canonised in 1933. It is now in a crystal coffin in the convent chapel.

Ars
St. John Vianny, the patron saint of priests, was the parish priest of Ars in France in the 19th century.
Born in 1786, he became famous for his spiritual direction. He founded an orphanage and delivered
powerful sermons in his Mass. Living a simple life in Ars he had extraordinary abilities to perform
miracles. His ability to heal the sick and read the hearts of penitents attracted thousands of people
every year to seek his advice. He died in 1859 and was canonised in 1925. His body was exhumed
because of his impending beatification and was found to be in perfect condition.
Rocamadour
We travel to Rocamadour, a town located approximately 100
miles from Toulouse. It owes its origin to St. Amador who chose this area for his devotion to Our
Lady. St. Amador is said to be Zacheus of the gospel, husband to St. Veronica, who wiped the face
of Our Saviour as He carried the cross to Calvary. After been driven out of Palestine in persecution,
St. Amador finally arrived in France and built a chapel in the province of Quercy in honour of the
Blessed Virgin. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Alzou valley, Rocamadour attracts many people to
this sanctuary every year.
Boucieu le Roi
Blessed Peter Vigne was born in the small village of Privas, France in 1670. He was ordained by the
Bishop of Viviers in 1694. Blessed Peter had a desire to become a missionary and therefore began
his missionary work in his early thirties. He spent over 30 years travelling to towns and villages and
in 1712 he came to Boucieu le Roi and with the help of the villagers the Stations of the Cross were
built. In 1715 he founded the Blessed Sacrement of Sisters Convent in Valence. Blessed Peter died in
1740 and was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2004. On our trip we will stay in Boucieu le Roi and
take part in the Stations of the Cross. We will also visit the convent in Valence.
Paray le Monial
Since 1873 Paray le Monial has
been a much frequented place
of pilgrimage. It was here in
the late 17th century that Jesus
appeared to Saint Margaret
Mary Alacoque. Most of the
apparitions took place in the
Chapel of Visitation and the
message that Jesus delivered was
that His Heart is full of love for
mankind. Her mission was to spread this message. On our trip we will
visit the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Paray le Monial

Santo Domingo:
In the late 15th century a German couple were making the
journey to Santiago along with their 18 year old son, Hugonell.
The family stopped at Santo Domingo de la Calzada to rest.
While there, the innkeepers daughter fell in love with the German
teenager however, he rejected her. As revenge, the girl framed
Hugonell for theft and placed a silver cup in his luggage. Once
the authorities found out he was sentenced to death. Saddened,
his parents continued to Santiago to pray and on return they
went to visit his body. However, Hugonell spoke to them and
sees thousands of pilgrims pass by on the way to Santiago every
year. In ancient times pilgrims stopped at the stream that flowed
through the village for the traditional washing before they entered
Santiago. We will take part in the washing in the stream before
continuing to our goal.
told them he was saved by St. Dominic. Elated his parents went
to notify the Mayor who was enjoying his dinner. The Mayor
dismissed the story and claimed that their son was as alive as
the two birds on his plate. Immediately the rooster and the hen
spread their wings and jumped from his plate.
UNESCO in 1984 and houses an impressive 19 chapels. The
cathedral is burial ground to El Cid, a Spanish national hero and
his wife. The 16th century golden staircase is located here also.
We will see the tomb of El Cid, the Golden staircase and the
flexible crucifix.
O’Cebreiro
Around the year 1300 a weary Benedictine priest was celebrating
Mass on a cold Winter's Day. A local farmer was the only villager
who attended the Mass due to the snowstorm and he arrivied
just as the priest was consecrating the host. The priest had little
faith that the presence of Christ was present in the Most Holy
Sacrement. He ridiculed the farmer for making the journey in
bad weather for a non existant miracle. Almost immediately the
host changed to flesh and the wine changed to blood. Today we
will see the Church of the Eucharistic miralce and also the old
thatched pallozzos in O’Cebreiro.
Santiago
For more than 1000 years pilgrims have been making the journey
to visit the Cathedral of St. James. The cathedral was built in his
honour on the site where his remains were found. Legend has
it that when St. James remains were being transported to Spain,
the boat sank and his body was lost at sea. However, when his
remains washed up on the coast they were found to be in perfect
condition and covered in scallops. One of the most recognised
symbols of the Camino today is the scallop. The spectacular
swinging of the Botafumeiro takes place in the Cathedral of
St. James. In ancient times, this was used to purify the air when
crowds of pilgrims arrived in Santiago after their long journey.
See also the Jessi Tree, the portico of glory and the tomb of St.
James.
Lavacolla
Lavacolla is a small village, approximately 10 km from Santiago,
Burgos
The magnificent Cathedral of Burgos is famous for it's vast size
and Gothic architecture. Built in 1221 the cathedral is dedicated
to the Virgin Mary. It was declared a world heritage site by
