BEARS AND WILDCATS…
Both St. Joseph and Mattawan come into tonight’s game after victories last week. The Bears claimed sole
possession of the Big 16 West Division lead after beating Portage Central. Mattawan picked up their
second victory of the season and first divisional win after defeating Kalamazoo Loy Norrix. Tonight will be
the eight time St. Joe and Mattawan have played with the Bears leading the series 5-2. The Bears have
won the last three meetings by the combined score of 150-20, including 55-7 last year in Mattawan.
ABOUT THE BEARS…
Offense, defense, and special teams are keys to any teams’ success. The Bears got contribuntions from all
three in St. Joe’s 35-28 win at Portage Central. The offense got 161 yards rushing and three touchdowns
from Eddie Montgomery. The defense got two interceptions from Marcus Valentine and two sacks from
Cole Radenbaugh. The special teams came up with the biggest play. Ty Taylor blocked a punt with 2:30
left in the game and then returned it for the touchdown to give the Bears the win. The Bears have now won
four straight against the Mustangs.
ABOUT THE WILDCATS…
It didn’t look good early for Mattawan as the Wildcats fell behind 21-0 after the first quarter to Kalamazoo
Loy Norrix. But the Wildcats closed the gap to 21-20 at halftime. The Wildcats then outscored Loy Norrix
29-18 in the second half. Cameron VanFleet had 276 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Davis DeVries
also added two touchdowns for Mattawan in the 49-39 win over the Knights. Mattawan improves to 2-4.

THE SERIES…
The Bears and Mattawan first met in the 2001 season when the Big 8 Conference expanded to
the current Big 16 conference. St. Joseph defeated the Wildcats 14-12 at Mattawan in the
first ever meeting. The Bears and Mattawan would meet again in 2002 which St. Joe won 2519 at Bridgman high school. The game was at Bridgman because the current Dickinson
Stadium was under construction. The series would resume in 2005, the Wildcats would win
the next two games, The Bears have won the last three games, including last season’s 55-7
win at Mattawan.
2010 St. Joseph Bears Football
During St. Joe’s 35-28 win at Portage Central last
week, Ty Taylor blocked a punt and then returned it
for a touchdown. It’s the sixth time in school history
that a blocked punt was returned for a touchdown.
The last time it happened was 1999, when Brandon
Hobbs and Andy Radde did it the same year.

Mattawan at St. Joseph – 10/8/10

THE LAST MEETING… 10/9/09 – ST. JOSEPH 55, MATTAWAN 7 – MATTAWAN STADIUM
(Mattawan) -- A week after defeating a ranked Portage Central
team, the Bears went back on the road, looking not to have a
letdown against a struggling Mattawan team.
St. Joe erased any thoughts of looking past the Wildcats ahead of
next week's game against rival Lakeshore, by crushing the
Wildcats 55-7 on a cold and wet night in Mattawan.
The Bears decided to take the opening kick and put Mattawan
defense on the field first, a place where they would be a lot. St.
Joe took the opening drive 65 yards in 9 plays capped off by a 3
yard touchdown run by Chrys Killebrew.
Nick Piggee catches the TD Pass from Sean Guinane in the second
quarter of the Bears 55-7 win at Mattawan (Dorrine Guinane photo)
Mattawan's offense would be forced to punt after only 5 plays.
Devonte Jones returned the punt deep into Mattawan territory and
Sean Guinane threw a 36 yard TD pass to Joel Bergman to put
the Bears up 14-0.
Mattawan would give the Bears the ball back on the ensuing kickoff as returner Zach Moore fumbled the ball on the kickoff.
Michael Case recovered the ball and the Bears went 24 yards on 6 plays as Sean Guinane took the ball into the endzone
himself from 2 yards out and a 21-0 lead.
Still in the first quarter, the Bears defense would again force a Mattawan punt, the Bears found the endzone again with :03
seconds left in the first quarter as Guinane found Devonte Jones for a 48 yard score to put the Bears up 28-0 after 1.
Another Mattawan punt was followed by another Bears touchdown drive as Chrys Killebrew scored his second touchdown of
the game for a 35-0 St. Joe lead.
Mattawan's offense tried to keep themselves close, but turned the ball over on down and the Bears closed out the scoring in
the first half when Sean Guinane threw a bullet pass to WR Nick Piggee from 7 yards out as the Bears and Wildcats went
into the locker room with St. Joe leading 42-0.
The second half would start with the MHSAA mercy rule in effect and most of the Bears starters on the sidelines.
Ryan Vitale would intercept a pass from Mattawan quarterback Zach Stone, and the Bears would find the endzone again
when Ty Taylor scored on a 6 yard run. After staring kicker Josh Akins made 6 of 6 extra points, Josh Fagras would assume
the kicking duties, but his first attempt was no good. The Bears had a 48-0 lead.
With the clock quickly running out, the Bears found the endzone again when third string quarterback Tommy Fry scored on a
20 yard scramble to put St. Joe on top 55-0.

The first Dickinson Stadium
In the mid 1940's the St. Joseph School system acquired the title to a 40 acre parcel of land known as the Dickinson Estate. The area is
where the current high school now stands. Around that same time the citizens of St. Joseph recognized the need for a new athletic and
recreation area. The St. Joe football team played their games at Wells field (where Jefferson elementary currently sits). There was no
parking for the fans, except on the neighboring streets, and the wooden grandstands were in danger of collapse. It was then that the St.
Joe residents got the ball rolling for a new facility. After receiving numerous recommendations by various experts, the planning committee,
commissioned architect Robert V. Knox to develop the sketches and conceptual drawings of the stadium. The Board of Education would
take these plans to the various service clubs around St. Joseph to rally the community involvement in the project, Every group that were
presented the plans went on record as supporting it. The voters overwhelmingly passed the $170,000 bond proposal on July 25, 1949 for
the new stadium and track. A little over a year later, on September 22, 1950, the original Dickinson Stadium opened. Dickinson Stadium
held it's last event on October 19, 2001. In the 51 year history of the stadium it was the home to thousands of events, including football
games, track meets, soccer games, band competitions, and commencement ceremonies.
The new Dickinson Stadium
The idea for a new stadium came about when a commission was charged with reviewing and making recommendations on the future of
the facilities of the St. Joseph Public School system for the next 30-40 years. After a review of the old stadium it was determined that to
bring the stadium's aging and deteriorating steel support and infrastructure up to code would be a very expensive project. The commission
visited newly constructed high schools around the Midwest and made recommendations for the St. Joe schools, including a new football
stadium. In March of 2001 a plan for a bond proposal was presented to the St. Joe taxpayers, which not only included the new stadium,
but also a new athletic fieldhouse and other various projects at the high school, and a new auxiliary gym, offices, library and orchestra
room at Upton Middle School. The bond issue passed on September 25, 2001, less than a month later, the last game at the old Dickinson
Stadium would be played and demolition would begin.
While construction continued during the 2002 football season the varsity team played their "Home" games at Lakeshore's Al Stockman
Stadium, Benton Harbor's Filstrup Field and at Bridgman High School. Upton Middle School was the home site for the JV and Freshmen
teams. The new stadium still has one feature from the old stadium, and that is the electronic scoreboard/message center that was
installed prior to the 1998 season. The scoreboard was dismantled and moved from it's previous location to where it currently stands. The
stadium now also has an 8 lane running track, the old stadium had 7 and only 6 were useable. The first games were played on Thursday,
September 4th, by the Freshman and JV teams who gave the stadium it's first shakedown before the Grand Opening a week later. The
official dedication was prior to the game between St. Joseph and Kalamazoo Central which St. Joe won 34-13.
Less than a year after the opening, the new Dickinson Stadium had the honor of hosting country music and TV star Reba McIntyre for a
performance benefiting Harbor Habitat for Humanity, The concert was part of Reba's 2004 tour which was sponsored by Whirlpool
Corporation. The concert was held in front of a sold out crowd of over 6,500 on July 20, 2004.
At the end of every season, the 8th grade team from Upton Middle School will play their last home game at Dickinson Stadium, which will
become their new home field as Freshmen. Dickinson Stadium occasionally is the home field for Lake Michigan Catholic High School

SEASON SUMMARIES – 8/27/10 – ST. JOSEPH 37, MARSHALL 7 – DICKINSON STADIUM
(St. Joseph) -- The more things change, the more
they stay the same. St. Joe won for the third time
in the last four seasons against Marshall. Avenging
a 40-27 loss in week 1 of last season, with a 37-7
win over the defending Division 4 state champions.
The Bears team graduated a senior class that
included four NCAA division 2 football players, but
across the field, Marshall lost 20 starters from their
2009 championship season, including most of their
coaching staff. Veteran coach Rich Hulkow took
over the head coaching position at Olivet College in
the offseason.
The Bears would have to wait to get their first
chance on offense until 5:05 remaining in the first
quarter as the Redhawks drive aided by St. Joe
Bears quarterback Jeremy Rush escapes the pressure and throws a touchdown pass in the
penalties, stalled at the Bears 27 yard line. St. Joe

then went 73 yards and took 4:08 off the clock as
Eddie Montgomery put on the first points of the season for St. Joe on a 1 yard run to put the Bears up 7-0.
Marshall tied the score on their next possession as Everett Woods scored on a 9 yard run with 9:31 left in the second quarter.
The Bears added two field goals on the next two possessions as Josh Akins hit from 39 and 20 yards out for a 13-7 St. Joe
lead, which turned out to be the score heading into the half.
St. Joe didn't take long to add to the lead to start the second half, Jeremy Rush threw a 59 yard pass to Bobby Symonds to
give the Bears the ball at the Redhawks 7 yard line, Rush would call his own number and reached the endzone to put St. Joe
up 20-7.
Late in the third quarter, St. Joe's defense provided some points as Joel Bergman tackled Marshall's Pary's Armstrong in the
endzone for a safety, increasing the lead to 22-7.
The Bears recorded another safety on the Redhawks next drive, a bad snap on a Marshall punt caused Armstrong to fall on
the ball in the endzone, giving St. Joe a 24-7 lead.
Two plays later, St. Joe put the game out of reach when Jeremy Rush threw a 49 yard touchdown pass to Bobby Symonds to
give St. Joe a 30-7 lead.
St. Joe would close out the game with Sophomore Alex Rutherford's 9 yard touchdown run with :06 seconds left, giving the
Bears a 37-7 lead.
The Bears are 1-0 on the season and will face Battle Creek Harper Creek (1-0) on Friday at Dickinson Stadium. Gametime is

SEASON SUMMARIES – 9/3/10 – ST. JOSEPH 17, HARPER CREEK 7 – DICKINSON STADIUM
(St. Joseph) -- With the Bears holding a slim 3 point
lead in the fourth quarter, St. Joe's defense made
sure the visitors would not see the endzone in St.
Joe's 17-7 win over Harper Creek.
Both teams struggled to move the ball in the first
half. Harper Creek appeared to have scored the
opening touchdown of the game in the first quarter,
but the apparent touchdown was nullified by an
illegal blocking penalty, which allowed the Beavers
Taylor Rowe to score. Two plays later the Bears
recovered a fumble by Harper Creek Kasey
Carson, ending the drive.

St. Joe went on a 12 play 78 yard drive and took a
3-0 lead early in the second quarter when Josh
Akins booted a 26 yard field goal, Akins third field
goal this season.
The two teams would trade possessions without scoring the rest of the half, sending the Bears to the locker room with a 3-0
lead.
St. Joe would take the opening possession of the second half to expand the lead when the Bears went on a 9 play, 51 yard
drive as Ty Taylor scored on a 18 yard touchdown run to take a 10-0 lead.
Harper Creek would get on the board late in the third quarter as Kody Carson threw a 66 yard touchdown pass to Taylor
Rowe to close the gap to 10-7.
Harper Creek would drive in to the Bears territory twice in the fourth quarter, but the Bear defense would prevent Harper
Creek from getting any closer to the endzone.
St. Joe would put the nail in the coffin of Harper Creek with 42 seconds left when Jeremy Rush ran for a 37 yard touchdown
to put provide the final margin a 17-7.
Jeremy Rush was 5 of 16 passing for 87 yards in the win.

SEASON SUMMARIES – 9/10/10 – ST. JOSEPH 15, NILES 7 – VIKING STADIUM
(Niles) -- Over the past four years, the Bears
offense has been the reason for the Bears success,
but it's become very apparent that the St. Joe
defense this season that is charged with the role of
helping to win games.
The St. Joe defense held Niles to just 17 yards of
total offense in the second half as St. Joe defeated
the Vikings 15-7, it's the Bears fifth straight win over
Niles.
St. Joe got on the board first as Alex Rutherford ran
for a 64 yard touchdown run at the 3:18 mark of the
first quarter. Josh Akins point after was no good
after a bad snap.
The Bears defense forced the Niles offense to a
three and out and a bad punt gave St. Joe the ball
at the Niles 41 yard line.

St. Joe would find the endzone 7 plays later as Rutherford scored his second touchdown of the game from a yard out.
Another bad snap on the extra point attempt caused the attempt to fail. St. Joe had a 12-0 lead with 10:07 left in the first
half.
Niles would get back into the game on their first play from scrimmage as Niles took advantage of a missed assignment on a
blitz as quarterback Nick Lucero found Ronnie Jones alone behind the Bear defense and scored on a 67 yard pass play.
Dustin White's point after was good and the Bears had a 12-7 lead.
The Bears threatened to score late in the half, but Jeremy Rush's pass was intercepted with 33 seconds left in the half and
both teams headed to the locker room with the Bears holding the 5 point advantage.
The second half started with St. Joe holding the ball for the first 7:36 of the third quarter, the drive ended after Josh Akins
missed a 35 yard field goal.
Niles got the ball back but thanks to penalties and sacks, the drive ended after 9 plays, gaining only 8 total yards, but took 4
minutes off the clock.
After forcing the Bears to punt the ball on the next possession. Niles would quickly lose control of the ball as Riley Johnson
cause Niles rusher Martell Miller to fumble the ball, which Josh Akins recovered, giving the Bears the ball at the Niles 24 yard
line.
Josh Akins recovered the fumble and then five plays later he added a 27 yard field goal to put the Bears ahead 15-7.
The St. Joe defense stepped up again and forced Niles to a three and out on their next series, giving the ball back to the
Bears with 6:21 left in the game. Niles still with two time out left didn't realize that they would not get the ball back.
St. Joe used the last 6:21 of the game and converted on a 4th down when drawing a Niles player offsides. St. Joe held on to
the ball for 9:27 of the 4th quarter, compared to just 2:33 for Niles.
It's the Bears fifth straight win over Niles. St. Joe has outscored Niles 146-16 over those five games.

SEASON SUMMARIES – 9/17/10 – ST. JOSEPH 55, KALAMAZOO LOY NORRIX 7 – DICKINSON STADIUM
(St. Joseph) – During the Bears last two games this
season, the defense made sure that whatever the
St. Joe offense would score would hold up. The
points were hard to come by in wins over Harper
Creek and Niles.
But the St. Joe offense scored 55 points in a 55-7
win over Kalamazoo Loy Norrix
The Bears took the opening kickoff and went on a
10 play drive that ended on a 10 yard touchdown
run from Jeremy Rush to put the Bears ahead 7-0.
The Knights, who were making their first ever visit
to Dickinson Stadium, were forced to punt after
three plays, gaining just 6 yards.

Another St. Joe drive ended with the Bears finding
the endzone, when Rush threw a perfect pass to
Joel Bergman from 7 yards out giving St. Joe a 14-0 lead.
The Bear defense continued to keep the Norrix offense bottled up into the second quarter, after Riley Johnson intercepted a
pass for Norrix quarterback Kane Cruz, the Bears had a short field to work with, starting at the 24 yard line of the visitors.
Five plays later, Eddie Montgomery, who missed the last two games to injury got back in the game and in the endzone on a 1
yard run.
With the Bears leading 21-0, St. Joe was in position to add another touchdown, but Montgomery fumbled before crossing the
goal line, the ball was recovered in the endzone by the Knights, sending the ball back to the 20 after the touchback. Norrix
got on the board on an 82 yard touchdown pass from Cruz to Je'Vonte' Hughes, cutting the lead to 21-7
St. Joe responded on the next possession as Alex Rutherford scored on a 2 yard run, extending the lead to 28-7 heading into
the half.
Norrix came out of the locker room determined to get back into the game, driving down to the Bears 6 yard line, but turned
the ball over on downs.
After both teams traded punts, the Bears needed only 20 seconds to find the endzone again when Alex Rutherford ran for a
52 yard touchdown. The Bears led 34-7 after the point after hit off the left upright.
St. Joe added another touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter as Eddie Montgomery scored his second touchdown
of the game for a 41-7 St. Joe lead.
Rutherford would score again midway through the fourth quarter to start the MHSAA mercy rule with the Bears leading 48-7.
Davonte Piggee would provide the final margin of victory, when he ran for a 61 yard touchdown run on the only play of the
drive.
In total, the Bears outgained the Knights 527-199 and 421-48 on the ground. The Bears were an impressive 6 of 7 in the
redzone and forced three Loy Norrix turnovers.

SEASON SUMMARIES – 9/24/10 – ST. JOSEPH 42, BENTON HARBOR 0 – DICKINSON STADIUM
ST. JOSEPH – St. Joe’s offense came into Friday’s
game with Benton Harbor in high gear after beating
Kalamazoo Loy Norrix the week before 55-7. The
Bears offense was in cruise control as St. Joe
defeated the visiting Tigers 42-0, improving St. Joe
to 5-0 on the season.
St. Joe capitalized on great field position after a
Benton Harbor punt, setting the Bears up at the
Tiger 20 yard line. After Alex Rutherford brought
the ball down to the 2 yard line, he would finish it off
on the next play as St. Joe opened the scoring at 70.
The St. Joe defense forced a Tiger fumble on the
Tigers next drive and the Bears found the endzone
again on the next drive after Jeremy Rush ran for
49 yards bringing the ball to the Tiger 15 yard line.
Four plays later Josh Akins scored on a 6 yard run
to put the Bears ahead 14-0.

The Bears expanded their lead to 21-0 midway through the second quarter, as St. Joe went on a 9 play drive, capped off with
a three yard touchdown run from Eddie Montgomery.
Montgomery found the endzone again in the final minute of the second quarter when the Bears special teams tackled Benton
Harbor punter Dominique Anderson at the 11 yard line after a bad snap. Montgomery scored from a yard out and the Bears
headed into the intermission with a 28-0 lead.
The Bears took advantage of great field position after another Tiger punt, when the Bears completed a 4 play, 25 yard drive
with Alex Rutherford’s second touchdown run of the game, to put the Bears ahead 35-0, beginning the MHSAA mercy rule.
As the time continued to run, the Bears closed out the third quarter in the Tiger endzone again as Alex Rutherford scored his
third touchdown of the game to put St. Joseph ahead 42-0-.
While the offense was done for the night, the defense never stepped down as the Bear defense stopped the Tigers the rest of
the way. In fact the St. Joe defense held Benton Harbor to negative 1 yards to total offense for the game.
St. Joe outgained Benton Harbor 315 to -1 for the game and held the Tigers to only two first downs for the game.

SEASON SUMMARIES – 10/1/10 – ST. JOSEPH 35, PORTAGE CENTRAL 28 – McCAMLEY FIELD
(Portage) – Whenever Portage Central and St.
Joseph meet on the football field, the game usually
is an instant classic. The 50th all time meeting
between the two storied programs probably topped
them all.
Ty Taylor blocked a punt by Portage Central's Tad
Drabik, then Taylor picked up the loose ball and ran
30 yards for the St. Joseph touchdown to give the
Bears a 35-28 lead.
The Bears got things going early in the game as St.
Joe grabbed the lead on the opening possession of
the game. Eddie Montgomery scored on a 21 yard
run to give the Bears a 7-0 lead less than four
minutes into the game.

The Bear defense help the Mustangs potent
offense to a three and out on their opening drive
forcing the Mustangs to punt. St. Joe then got the ball back and scored again on a 10 yard touchdown run by Montgomery to
give the Bears a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Mustangs responded in the second quarter scoring twice to tie the game on touchdown runs by Central's Aaron King
from 65 and two yards out.
The Mustangs attempted to take the lead late in the half but a 27 yard field goal attempt by Drabik was wide left.
Portage Central didn't take very long to grab their first lead of the game when Aaron King ran for a 64 yard touchdown on the
first play from scrimmage in the second half to give the home team a 21-14 lead.
The Bears answered back on their next possession as St. Joe went on a nine play drive to tie the game on a one yard
touchdown run to tie the game at 21-21.
Portage Central would take the lead late in the third quarter when Nick Price scored on a 10 yard run putting the Mustangs up
28-21.
The Bears then went on an amazing 15 play-80 yard drive that took 8:18 off the clock and tied the game on a two yard
touchdown run by Eddie Montgomery.
The Bears defense again stepped up and forced a three and out for Central which resulted in Taylor's blocked punt and
return for touchdown giving St. Joe the 35-28 lead.
The Mustangs still had 2:37 and a full compliment of time outs, but on their first play, Marcus Valentine intercepted Kyle
Cutler's pass attempt. It was Valentine's second interception of the game, the first happened in the endzone during the
second quarter with the Bears leading 14-0.
The Bears would run out the final 2:20 of the game for the win, clinching a playoff berth for the fifth straight season.
St. Joe has won four straight over Central leads the all time series with the Mustangs 27-23, and outscored PC 866-860.

Plenty of new faces at St. Joseph
Bears look to defend SMAC West co-championship
AL AREND – HERALD PALLADIUM
With only four starters back on both sides of the ball, a lot of questions remain about this fall’s St. Joseph varsity football
team.
“Our biggest problem is our numbers are way down,” said coach Elliot Uzelac, now in his fifth year at the Bears helm,
including a 9-3 record, Big 16 West Division co-championship and district title a year ago.
“Both our junior and sophomore classes are two of the smallest to come through here in awhile and that is reflected on our
team. For the past three years we’ve been in the high 50s on the varsity.”
This year’s roster lists 45.
“We certainly can’t afford any injuries. But I see a lot of potential, one that is going to grow as the year goes on,” noted
Uzelac, 37-10 in his four years at St. Joseph. “Hopefully we can have some early wins.”
That may be easier said than done, as the Bears open the season at home against defending Division 4 state champion
Marshall and Battle Creek Harper Creek, a team that returns both its offensive and defensive lines intact, according to
Uzelac.
“Our offensive line has size and can move well,” added Uzelac. “Plus we have a quarterback (Jeremy Rush) back that started
five games for us, and a solid place kicker in Josh Akins.”
Returning starters on offense besides Rush, a 6-foot, 169-pound senior, include senior wide receivers Bobby Symonds and
Joel Bergman and 201-pound senior offensive guard Logan Mosher.
“We are making some adjustments in our offense based on our personnel,” said Uzelac. “Some will be apparent and some
will not. We have to do what they can do best. We want balance in yardage gained, not how many times we run it or pass it.”
Starting on offense besides Rush, Symonds, Bergman and Mosher, will be fullback Akins or senior Craig Campbell. On the
line are senior tight ends Carter Nimtz and Alex Osmar, senior tackles Adam Lalley and Devonte Milton, guards Mosher and
either sophomore Jordan Askew or junior Devonte Mitchell, and senior center David Reimers.
Concerning the starting tailback, Uzelac said “we’re looking at three of them, and I think we’ll be good there.” The trio
includes seniors Ty Taylor (148) and Eddie Montgomery (168), plus sophomore Alex Rutherford.
The Bears will remain in their 4-3 defensive alignment and return four starters in safety Rush, linebacker Nimtz, end Lalley
and tackle Milton.
Up front besides Lalley and Milton, will either be seniors Cole Radenbaugh, Devonte Piggee, junior Sean Valentine, Mitchell
or Osmar.
Joining Nimtz at linebacker will be Akins and junior Riley Johnson.
At the corners will be sophomore Jalen Holmes and Valentine. Sophomore Zack Kirkpatrick and junior Jacob Fratzke are
also expected to see plenty of action. Be sides Rush, the other safety will be either Taylor or senior Eddie Montgomery.
“We want a defensive line that can penetrate and linebackers that can run,” add ed Uzelac. “We may blitz a little more this
year.”
The punting will be handled by either Rush, Nimtz, Valentine or Ryan Kavanaugh.

ST. JOSEPH -- St. Joseph is looking to win the
Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference West Division
title for the fourth straight year and make the playoffs for
the fifth straight year.
Repeating those feats won't be easy since the Bears lost
seven first team all-conference players from last year's 9-3
squad.
"We lost some good players," said St. Joseph football
coach Elliot Uzelac. "We're really going to be young this
year. Our early schedule is difficult with games to start the
year against (defending state champion) Marshall and
Battle Creek Harper Creek (6-4 last year).”
"If our young players progress and we can get by our first
two games we can be a darn good team moving forward."
Five starters return on offense and five on defense.
Quarterback Jeremy Rush returns after starting five
games last year. Wide receiver Joel Bergman will be one
of his top targets.
"We're further along with our quarterback and wide
receivers this year compared to last year," Uzelac said.
Running backs fighting for playing time will be Eddie
Montgomery, Ty Taylor and Alex Rutherford.
"If somebody steps up they'll carry the load," Uzelac said.
Defensively, there is plenty of talent and experience with
the return of defensive linemen Adam Lalley, Demonte
Milton, DaVonte Piggee, linebackers Carter Nimtz, Josh
Akins and Riley Johnson and defensive backs Rush,
Taylor and Montgomery.
KALAMAZOO -- The Southwestern Michigan Athletic
Conference is kickin' it new-school. After years of starting
football games at 7:30 p.m., the 16-team league has
decided to bump its kickoff times up to 7 p.m. beginning
this season.
"It's been on the agenda for a number of years," SMAC
executive secretary Blake Hagman said. "When we. do
something within the conference and
make a change, not all of them are administrative
changes. We try to make sure that coaches or the people
that are impacted have an opportunity to speak to the
question on the table.
"Coaches from the old school, that 7:30 time was when
you played high school football." With changes in some of
the member schools' athletic administration, principals and
coaches, the 7 p.m. start time was viewed as a positive.
Not necessarily in every way, though.
"My feelings aren't tremendously strong either way," said
Pete Schermerhorn, who is entering his 17th season as
Portage Northern's head coach.
"I had two concerns (about moving to 7 p.m.). We try to
get the kids a meal before the game; 7:30 seemed like a
good fit for the kids to have a little time
(after the meal and before the game). We'll just have to
bump that time up. The bigger thing was, and it's not a
huge difference, but the heat in August,
even waiting that extra half an hour, in some cases could
be (a difference of) five to 10 degrees." It's going to be a
bit of an adjustment from a planning standpoint,
Schermerhorn added. "We were the only ones in the area
to (still) have 7:30 games, I think,"
Loy Norrix athletic director Andrew Laboe said. "In our
conference, we have huge travel (considerations). Getting
fans to road games (on time) was a concern. "But we
switched to two divisions (last season), and most of the
games are divisional and they're closer, for the most part.
We hope (the new game times) will work in a positive
way."

Joe Cernik expected to carry heavy load for Mattawan football team
Despite smallish stature, senior loves physical aspect of game
JAYSON BUSSA – KALAMAZOO GAZETTE
MATTAWAN — It’s a little difficult to believe now, but
when Mattawan’s Joe Cernik played Rocket football, he
was one of the big guys.
Now standing a modest 5-foot-8 and 165 pounds, the
senior recalled the days where he was pigeon-holed as a
lineman.
“They had a certain weight limit in Rocket football for you
to run the ball and I was just a little over it, which is kind of
funny,” Cernik said. “I think I was only five pounds over it.”
So in eighth grade, when the weight restriction was lifted,
Cernik couldn’t wait to hit the ground running.
“I surprised myself; I did really well that year,” he said.
After Mattawan graduated its top three running backs last
season, including top rusher Zach Moore, Cernik will be
one of the focal points to a stable of runners in the
Wildcats’ Wing-T formation that produced 1,800 yards.
Cernik also started on the defensive line last season
following a short stint at linebacker. He will return to the
trenches this year and be the Wildcats’ iron man of sorts.
I kind of like it a little better than linebacker because you’re
lower and you’re close up to the ball and there is more
action,” Cernik said. “I’ve always played running back. I
feel every time I get the ball, that’s what I’m supposed to
do.”
Claiming to find much more pleasure in running over a
defender than juking him out, Cernik seemingly
personifies much of what second-year Mattawan coach
Matt Stephens said was missing from last year’s 2-7 team.
The Wildcats’ seven losses were by an average of 32
points, including three by 40-plus points.
“We play in a very physical league,” Stephens said of the
Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference. “We know
our competition is very fierce. Last year, we couldn’t really
compete with those teams. This year, we think we can.
We don’t expect to be rolled over like a doormat this year.
We expect to be able to compete with the Portage
Centrals, the Portage Northerns, the Lakeshores.”
Sagging numbers and the learning curve of a new offense
were two issues that plagued the Wildcats last season.
With 40 players on the roster, up 10 from a year ago,
fewer players are expected to play both ways, Stephens
said.
“We should have a lot more one-way players this year and
guys giving each other breaks,” he said. “We generally
have the numbers, but last year we just had one of those
groups that didn’t have a lot of interest in playing.”
The Wing-T offense, which Cernik called “complicated
stuff,” now has a solid cast of halfbacks behind returning
quarterback Mac Dietz. One of those guys is Cameron
VanFleet, also a safety, who said he hopes to pick up
carries shouldered by the seniors last year.
As for changing Mattawan’s fortunes, VanFleet said much
of the battle is between the ears.
“I felt like it was more of a mental thing,” VanFleet said.
“We get down and people just can’t get up and it gets in
their heads that we just can’t get it done. We just have to
step it up this year and block that out of our head.”
MATTAWAN WILDCATS
Coach: Matt Stephens (2nd year).
2009 records: 2-7 (2-5 SMAC West, 6th place).
Starters returning: 9. Mac Dietz (Sr., QB), Cameron VanFleet (Sr., RB/DB), Kyle Hillsburg (Sr., TE/DB), Joe Cernik (Sr., RB/DL), Hazen
Barrett (Sr., RB/DL), Alec Hastings (Jr., OL/DL), Spencer Young (Sr., C/DL), Kevin Bitzer (Sr., OL), Alex Kolenko (Sr., OL/LB).
Lettermen returning: Demetrius Tyler (Sr., RB/DB), Davis Willson (Sr., OL/DL), Cortez Akers (Sr., OL/DL), Parker Williams (Sr., OL/DL),
John Bryer (Sr., TE/DB).
New prospects: James Shipp (Jr., RB/LB), Davis DeVries (Jr., RB/LB), Jared Ropp (Jr., OL/LB).
Analysis: The physical nature of the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference took its toll last season on the Wildcats, who lost their
seven games by an average of 32 points. Stephens is optimistic a 25 percent increase in roster size, to about 40 players, will give his
squad the depth to be more competitive. Six running backs could contribute out of the Wing-T formation.

Blocked punt keys St. Joseph victory
BEN SANDERS – HERALD PALLADIUM
PORTAGE — After win ning with defense for most of the
season, St. Joseph got a big game from its offense Friday
— and one huge play on special teams.
Ty Taylor blocked a punt and returned it 25 yards for the
game-winning touchdown to give the Bears a thrilling 3528 victory over Portage Central.
The win puts Division 3 No. 6 St. Joseph (4-0, 6-0) in sole
possession of first place in the Southwestern Michigan
Athletic Conference’s West Division. The Bears also
clinched a playoff berth.
“It was a great game,” St. Joseph coach Elliot Uzelac said.
“We beat a hell of a team. They deserve all their rankings.
They’re a wonderful football team. Both teams played with
great resolve, we just made one more big play than they
did.”
With less than 3 minutes left and the score tied, Division 2
No. 6 Portage Central (3-1, 5-1) attempted to punt on
fourth down, but Taylor was able to block the kick and
take it to the endzone untouched.
“I just came clean off the edge,” Taylor said. “I was in
there right away, put my left hand out and it was just
laying there for me to scoop up. It didn’t even feel real. It
was amazing.”
The Bears controlled the possession for most of the game
behind the running of Eddie Montgomery. Entering the
game with just 31 carries on the season, Montgomery
rushed 34 times for 160 yards and three touchdowns.
“He’d have had more (carries) if I wanted him to have
more,” Uzelac said. “You know I’m old school. We’re going
to pound that ball. The bottom line is if you keep pounding,
you’re going to wear them down.” The Bears appeared to
wear the Mustangs down during a 15-play, 80-yard drive
that began late in the third quarter and spanned over eight
minutes. Montgomery finished the drive with a 2-yard
touchdown plunge to tie the score at 28 with 4:51 left to
play.
2010 St. Joseph Bears Football
“I wouldn’t be anywhere without the line,” Montgomery
said. “They came through for me. I really appreciate that.”
Portage Central appeared to be in good shape after
returning the ensuing kickoff to its own 40-yard line. But
St. Joseph’s Cole Radenbaugh came up with a key third
down sack.
Radenbaugh led the Bears defensively with two sacks and
a fumble recovery.
“We got the ball back tied in a position where we wanted
to be,” Portage Central coach Mick Enders said. “We just
didn’t convert. Then we had to punt, and there’s a mistake
there and they blocked it, and now we’re chasing.”
Portage Central went for a long pass on its first play after
the blocked punt, and St. Joseph’s Marcus Valentine
picked it off. It was the second interception of the game for
Valentine, who also grabbed a fourth down pass in the
end zone on the first play of the second quarter.
St. Joseph then sealed the victory with an aggressive play
call, as quarterback Jeremy Rush threw a 15 yard pass to
Joel Bergman on 3rd-and-11.
“That was a big play,” Uzelac said. “The guys up stairs
told me it was open and I said let’s go with it. You know
why? Because we think whoever won this game had a leg
up in the championship. So we said we’re going to do
what we’ve got to do, whatever it takes to win. That’s what
we said all week long, so why would I let my kids down
now? I’m going to call what it takes to win.”
Rush completed 9 of 12 passes for 147 yards. Bergman
was his favorite target with 7 catches for 122 yards.
St. Joseph led 14-0 after the first quarter, but Portage
Central rallied behind the running of Aaron King.
King scored the Mustangs’ first touchdown on a 65-yard
run in the second quarter, and added a 64 yard score on
the first play of the second half to give Portage Central its
first lead at 21-14. He finished with 10 carries for 145
yards and three touch downs.

St. Joe lands final punch as late blocked punt sinks Portage Central football team
SCOTT DECAMP - KALAMAZOO GAZETTE
PORTAGE — In a battle of Southwestern Michigan
Athletic Conference West Division heavyweights, might as
well throw out all the boxing terminology you can.
In Friday’s battle of unbeatens at McCamley Field, St.
Joseph landed a couple early haymakers, then Portage
Central counterpunched and staggered the Bears.
St. Joseph may have been knocked to the ground, but it
didn’t stay down long. The visiting Bears kept swinging
and, at the final bell, had toppled P-Central, 35-28.
“I just think they had good execution going. We were kind
of on our heels a little bit, yet we responded well,”
Mustangs senior Kyle Cutler said of the Bears’ quick start,
in which the visiting squad jumped out to a 14-0 lead with
2:31 left in the first quarter on a pair of touchdown runs by
Eddie Montgomery (21, 10 yards). P-Central had it tied up
almost 13 minutes later on Aaron King’s two scoring runs
(65, 20 yards).
“They punched first, we came back with a great
counterpunch and went into the half tied up (14-apiece),”
Cutler added.
St. Joseph’s Ty Taylor blocked Tad Drabik’s punt attempt,
scooped the ball and returned it 25 yards with 2:37
remaining to provide the winning score.
“We had some missed assignments (at key times),” said
dejected P-Central senior linebacker Nick Price, who had
a co-game-high 8.5 tackles. “We have some
inexperienced guys in some spots, and it cost us.”
St. Joseph (6-0, 4-0 SMAC West), ranked sixth in this
week’s Associated Press Division 3 poll, dominated time
of possession throughout most of the game and finished
with an overwhelming advantage (33:29-14:31) in that
category.
“(The loss) hurts ... it does,” Mustangs coach Mick Enders
said. “Just like you heard me telling the kids, I’m proud as
heck of them. We had, at one point, seven or eight kids
going both ways. We had Nick Price, Kyle Cutler ... the list
goes on and on. Just talk about the kids. They battled
hard, competed.
2010 St. Joseph Bears Football
“It was a great high school football game — we just made
a couple of mistakes down the stretch and you can’t afford
to do that.”
The Mustangs (5-1, 3-1) led 28-21 entering the fourth
quarter, but the Bears ran 21 plays to P-Central’s four.
St. Joseph (372 yards total offense, 226 rushing) capped
a 15-play, 80-yard drive when Montgomery spun into the
end zone from 2 yards out. The Bears ate 7:09 off the
fourth-quarter clock on that drive.
“It was a great game. We beat a heck of a team,” St.
Joseph coach Elliot Uzelac said. “We made one more big
play than they did. We made big plays, they made big
plays — kids were flying around. We made one big play.”
Montgomery rushed for a game-high 163 yards and the
three TDs on 35 carries for St. Joseph, which beat the
Mustangs 24-21 last season in the driving rain and strong
winds en route to a SMAC West title share with P-Central.
Bears quarterback Jeremy Rush was 9-of-12 passing for
146 yards, seven of the completions going to Joel
Bergman for 121 yards.
P-Central led twice in the second half, the second time on
Price’s 10-yard run in which he bounced off a couple
defenders and carried one into the end zone with 58
seconds left in the third quarter. The Mustangs shocked
St. Joseph out of the gate in the quarter, when King (146
yards, 10 carries) busted loose for a 64-yard scoring
scamper on the first play.
Cutler finished 5-of-13 passing for 109 yards, with two
interceptions, for P-Central (283 total yards, 174 rushing).
Ryan Krill caught four passes for 92 yards. Cutler and
King registered eight stops apiece.
St. Joseph’s Cole Radenbaugh notched 8.5 tackles, with
two sacks and a fumble recovery.
“I feel sorry for our next three opponents,” the determined
Price said. “We’ll come back strong, I guarantee it. I
guarantee it.”

Portage Central's Bob Knight, St. Joseph's Ike Muhlenkamp still going strong
DEL NEWELL - KALAMAZOO GAZETTE
PORTAGE — Ike Muhlenkamp and Bob Knight have had some titanic battles coaching football against each other.
Muhlenkamp’s St. Joseph teams and Knight’s Portage Central squads have had more showdowns than Wild West shootouts.
Big Eight Conference championships, state rankings and playoff berths have often been the stake.
Friday night at McCamley Field, the two coaching legends went against each other again —as varsity assistant football
coaches. It was like old times as St. Joseph, aided by a 25-yard blocked punt return by Ty Taylor with 2:37 remaining in the
fourth quarter, pulled out a dramatic 35-28 win in a battle of unbeatens.
"It was a great battle, just like all the battles with St. Joe have been," said Knight, who coached the Mustangs for 34 years,
produced a 216-108 record and had 11 teams in the playoffs. "We’ve had a lot of great battles. We have a lot of respect for
them. Kids on both teams played really hard. We’re disappointed to lose, but we lost to a great program."
Muhlenkamp, who also coached for 34 years, had a 233-111-1 record (including a 22-3 mark at Albion, his first coaching
stop). St. Joseph’s program fell on hard times after Muhlenkamp retired, but current coach Elliot Uzelac brought Ike out of
retirement as his assistant when he became head coach five years ago.
Uzelac, whose coaching stops included being head coach at Western Michigan University and Navy, along with being a
longtime assistant to Bo Schembechler at Michigan, said: "I’m still old school and we’re going to pound the ball."
The Bears did just that, rushing 52 times and gaining 226 yards. Senior Eddie Montgomery, who had rushed for 200 yards in
31 carries through the first five games, had a career night, banging out a game-high 163 yards in 35 carries and scored three
times (21, 10 and 2 yards).
Meanwhile, with the Bears (38 plays) playing keepaway most of the second half, Portage Central was able to run off just 14
plays over the last two quarters and rush for a total of 174 yards in only 24 attempts. Aaron King flashed his speed, however,
when he got the ball, sprinting to long-distance TDs covering 65 and 64 yards (plus a 2-yarder), and gaining 146 yards on
only 10 carries.
WELL-RECEIVED: Although both teams preferred to move the ball via the ground, both had big-play receivers. Ryan Krill
caught four passes from Mustang quarterback Kyle Cutler and gained 92 yards. One of Krill’s receptions, between two
defenders, went for 29 yards and another for 22 yards that set up Nick Price’s 2-yard TD run that put P-Central ahead 28-21
with 58 seconds left in the third quarter. St. Joseph had a pass-‘n-catch team in quarterback Jeremy Rush (9-of-12 passing
for 146 yards) and receiver Joel Bergman, who had game-highs of seven receptions and 121 yards.
INJURIES HURT MUSTANGS: Injuries took a toll on Portage Central as running back Brian Wise didn’t play and offensive
tackle Nate Jeppesen went out in the first half and didn’t return. Both had leg injuries.

St. Joseph’s late game heroics end Portage Central’s perfect season
ADAM NAVARRE – SW MICHIGAN SPORTS
The undefeated Bears from St. Joseph came to Portage
Central to settle once and for all the true number one team
in the SMAC. McCamley field would no doubt bare
witness to a battle of epic proportions as these two
talented teams clashed on a perfect night for football.
At the half with the score tied the stats are very close, with
St. Joseph leading in total offense by two yards, 148-146.
The Bears have more rushing yards, and the Mustangs
have more passing yards. St. Joseph lost a fumble but
intercepted a pass, giving each team a turnover.
St. Joseph set the tone early on in the game and
established a presence as Eddie Montgomery runs hard
and leads the way to their first touchdown off a 21 yard
off-tackle run that he bounced outside and cruised into the
end zone untouched. Montgomery continued to run hard
and show Portage Central what St. Joseph is capable of
offensively, and caps their next offensive possession with
another 10 yard TD run. That, with a successful point
after, brings the score to 14-0 in favor of the visiting Bears.
Coming out of the half Portage seeks to make a move and
with 11:44 left in the third quarter Aaron King crosses the
goal line after breaking free for a 64 yard touchdown.
After the successful point after the score is now 21-14 in
favor of the Mustangs.
Portage Central is down but not out and begins to make
their comeback when senior RB Aaron King breaks free
for a 65 yard TD run with 5:34 left in the second quarter to
break their scoring lapse. The scoring delay was a bit out
of character for the Mustangs who had previously never
taken longer than the first quarter to score so far this
season.
On the ensuing St. Joseph offensive drive, the Mustang
defense allowed four plays and forced the Bears to punt.
The punt came off a bit awkward, and took a bounce in
favor of Portage to help them start their drive on the Bears
43 yard line. A nice pass from senior QB Kyle Cutler to
senior Ryan Jankowiac results in a 17 yard strike and a
first down. After being sacked for an 8 yard loss the very
next play, Central wisely took a time-out to regain control
and keep momentum moving towards the goal line.
After regaining composure, Cutler makes a pass to senior
TE Ryan Krill on a 32 yard pass for first and goal on the 2
yd line. Aaron King easily seals the deal on a handoffright for a two yard jaunt into the end zone. All of the
sudden, after the successful point after, the score is tied at
14 all.
After a crowd-displeasing call for a penalty prior to the
next Portage kick-off, Tad Drabik blasts a deep one from
their 35. Portage Central strips the ball on the return and
Jason King recovers the fumble. One play later St.
Joseph committed a pass interference penalty and
Portage is suddenly back in the red zone poised to score.
Due to the overwhelming St. Joseph defense the
Mustangs are forced to settle for a 20 yard field goal that
they miss wide right, leaving the score still tied at 14 all.
2010 St. Joseph Bears Football
After outstanding play from both teams in the second half
they trade touchdowns to bring the score to 28-21, with
the advantage going to the home team. Shortly thereafter,
facing a fourth down situation just outside of field goal
range, St. Joseph opts to go for it and # 22 Eddie
Montgomery turns the corner to blast through to the first
down. Just outside the red-zone a pass to Rutherford sets
up St. Joseph on the 2 yard line with a first and goal
opportunity. Kyle Napp stuffs the run up the middle for no
gain and second and goal. Another up the gut run,
another Portage Central stop for no gain. Finally on third
and goal Montgomery runs around the left side and into
the end zone to even score at 28 all.
Nick Price gets to field the return off a line drive kick that
almost gets away from him. Despite the initial bobble on
the play, he manages to return the ball to the 40 yard line.
After faltering offensively this drive the Mustangs are left
to punt and let a few St. Joseph defenders sneak through
the line of blockers. St. Josephs’s #20 Ty Taylor, one of
the two Bears who got a piece of the ball, picks up the
blocked punt and returns it for a touchdown. With the
successful point after the Bears are now back in control of
the game 35-28.
On the ensuing Portage possession, a deep pass attempt
by Cutler is intercepted St. Joseph regains control of the
ball with just over two minutes remaining in the game.
They manage to get enough first downs to eventually take
a knee and allow the clock to run out, becoming the only
remaining team in the SMAC with an undefeated record.
When asked how it felt to be the only undefeated team left
in the SMAC West, St. Joseph’s hero of the game Eddie
Montgomery shared this; “It’s really amazing, I feel great
about it our team feels great about it. I think we’ll do really
well for the rest of the season and into the playoffs.”

VanFleet's 276 rushing yards leads Mattawan football team in wild rebound
Jeremy Martin – Kalamazoo Gazette
MATTAWAN — Spotting Loy Norrix a three-touchdown lead in the first quarter wasn’t exactly how Mattawan football coach
Matt Stephens drew up the game plan for homecoming.
But in the end, the Wildcats sent the home fans home happy.
Cameron VanFleet rushed for 276 yards and Mattawan did all of its scoring from the second quarter on in a 49-39 victory
against the Knights in a Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference West Division game Friday night.
“They came out and started hot. When adversity comes you got to just keep playing hard and play through it — and we
definitely had adversity,” Stephens said.
“The kids were just sticking together and saying, ‘We’re not going to quit, we’re not going to quit.’”
Rushing behind a senior-dominated offensive line, Mattawan relentlessly pounded the ball on the ground to the tune of 480
yards. VanFleet had nine runs of 10 yards or more — two of which went for scores of 49 and 68 yards — among his 23
carries.
“I was seeing those open holes. I have to give credit to my offensive line,” VanFleet said. “We struggled with the passing (2for-6 for 22 yards), so me and (Davis) DeVries really had to pick it up.”
DeVries added 120 yards and touchdown runs of 1 and 23 yards for the Wildcats (2-4, 1-3 SMAC West).
After allowing Loy Norrix to open 21-0 first-quarter lead, Mattawan was able to find the end zone twice in just over 10
seconds to pull within a touchdown. Trailing 21-7 with 11:33 left in the second quarter, DeVries recovered an onside kick at
the Wildcats’ 49-yard line. VanFleet scored on the next play to pull Mattawan within 21-14 and the Wildcats trailed just 21-20
at halftime.
Mattawan’s big break came with 5:05 left in the third quarter when it recovered a fumble. DeVries scored on a 1-yard run and
added the two-point conversion run that gave Mattawan a 28-20 lead — one the Wildcats wouldn’t relinquish during a second
half in which the teams produced 47 points.
Quarterback Kane Cruz passed for 318 yards to lead Loy Norrix (1-5, 1-3). He completed 17 of 30 passes for four
touchdowns, with two interceptions.
Jevonte Hughes had three receptions for 127 yards and a touchdown for the Knights.
Ce’Juwan McFerrin rushed for 175 yards on 13 carries, including a 92-yard first-quarter scamper that gave Loy Norrix a 14-0
lead.
“I was seeing space, my linemen came through for me. I pride myself on steady running,” McFerrin said.
“We got in our heads that maybe we got that ‘here we go again’ attitude, and it took them a while to get rid of it,” Loy Norrix
coach Sean Bergan said. “But the kids played their rear ends off. Offensively, we’re really starting to click.”
The victory was Mattawan’s fifth in a row against Loy Norrix dating back to 2004. The teams did not meet in 2007 or 2008.

Elliot Uzelac of St. Joseph Named Lions Coach of the Week
Allen Park, Mich. — The Detroit Lionshave named Elliot Uzelac of St. Joseph as the 2010 week six recipient of the High
School Coach of the Week Program presented by the Michigan Army National Guard.
Coach Uzelac guided his St. Joseph Bears to a 35-28 victory over previously unbeaten Portage Central last Friday (Oct. 1) to
improve to 6-0 on the season and wrap up a state playoff appearance. St. Joseph is currently ranked No. 4 in Division 3 by
the Detroit Free Press.
Uzelac is in his fifth season as head coach at St. Joseph where he has compiled a record of 43-10. He took over the program
in 2006 after the team went 0-9 the previous season and has guided the Bears to the state playoffs in each of his five
seasons.
Uzelac started coaching in 1964. He was head coach at Western Michigan University, Navy and St. John’s College High
School in Washington, D.C. He has served as an assistant at Bowling Green, Navy, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio State, Colorado,
Kentucky, Minnesota, Maryland, Georgetown and the NFL’s Cleveland Browns.
This week Uzelac and the Bears host Mattawan (2-4).

High school football: Blocked punt boosts Bears
Ty Taylor returned a blocked punt 30 yards with two minutes remaining as St. Joseph beat Portage Central, 35-28.
The Bears won a Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference West Division game between ranked teams.
St. Joseph (6-0 overall, 4-0 West) came in ranked sixth in Division 3, while Portage Central (5-1, 3-1) was No. 6 in Division 2.
With the win, St. Joseph qualifies for the playoffs for the fifth straight year.

Special Bears
Ty Taylor's 30-yard touchdown off his blocked punt with 2:50
remaining lifted No. 6-ranked (Division 3) St. Joseph past No. 6ranked (Division 2) Portage Central, 35-28, in a Southwestern
Michigan Athletic Conference West Division showdown last
Friday in Portage. Both teams came into the game 5-0.
"We've had a lot of blocked punts over the years," said St.
Joseph fifth-year coach Elliot Uzelac. "We work hard on special
teams. We want to do a better job than other teams in that area.
We study and look for weaknesses on other team's special
teams. It was a great play and the place erupted. I had to calm
our kids down because their was plenty of time left in the game
and I didn't want our kids to get worn out celebrating."
After taking the lead, St. Joseph sealed the win after getting the
second interception of the game from Marcus Valentine.
"It's right up there when it comes to big wins that I've had at St.
Joseph," Uzelac said. "Our kids were jacked up and the two
teams we're really going after it."
St. Joseph was able to regroup after watching Portage Central
2010 St. Joseph Bears Football
"I knew Portage Central was capable of coming back," Uzelac
said. "And they did. They played well and we were able to
answer them."
The running of Eddie Montgomery helped St. Joseph answer
Portage Central's rally. Montgomery rushed for 161 yards on 35
carries with three touchdowns.
"Eddie sprained his ankle in week one and he missed some time
over the next few weeks," Uzelac said. "Last week in practice I
thought he looked the best of all our running backs. He was
running hard and lowering his shoulders against Portage
Central."
With the dramatic win, St. Joseph qualified for the playoffs for the
fifth straight year.
"I'm just pleased because of the way we started the year,"
Uzelac said. "We had the least amount of starters returning since
2006. We had our regular starting offensive line playing together
for the first time this year against Portage Central. We're coming
together, but we still got a lot of room for improvement.
