Week 20: The Flight to Egypt
Luke 2:41-52
“The Boy Jesus in the Temple”
This week we make a quick jump from Jesus’ infancy to his pre-teen years. We don’t really know
why the Gospels don’t include more information about Jesus’ childhood. There are stories that were
not included in the “final” Bible that give us clues into what experiences he might have had. For the
most part, though, we are left to fill in the blanks.
In this week’s story, Jesus is a 12 year old. He travels with his parents to a “festival,” and when he disappears on them,
they become frantic. Luke says that Jesus was missing for three days before his parents found him. When they finally found
him (hanging out in church, of all things), they scolded him…”Child, why have you treated us like this?” Can you imagine--putting Jesus in “Time Out?”
This scripture reveals a very human side of Jesus. Like us, he was once a pre-teen with anxious parents. We can imagine
that they worried about his future just like every parent does. But Jesus had an agenda of his own. He had questions of his
own, and at age 12, God was already calling him to greater things.
This Sunday, we will invite our OWN 12 year olds to share with us in worship. Let’s listen to their ideas, their dreams,
their concerns. Let’s see what we can learn from our “Tweens” about how God is speaking in their lives. Jan. 24 will be
Laity Sunday, and on that day we will hear other testimonies about how God is working in people’s lives.
Join us as we continue to make connections between these Sacred stories and our own stories.
Amy
Sunday, January 24 is Laity Sunday
We will remember Jesus’ baptism and hear “baptism stories” from some of our own members.
We hope you will be present as we celebrate what our founders called “The Priesthood of All Believers.”
We had 16 entries for this year’s Chili Cook-off! Thanks so much to
everyone who brought chili or side items. It was a huge success!
Winners of this year’s event were: John Kingery (1st place), Jerry and
LaHonda Ball (2nd place), Tommy Johnston (3rd place), Debbie Hubbard
(FCC Chili Champion of All Time) and Kelly Hirzel (People’s Choice
Award).
Debbie Hubbard received the first-ever “FCC Chili Champion of All
Time Award” after once again placing in the Top 3. She has placed
every year in the Chili CookOff
since it’s beginning in 2008.
Thank you to our judges:
Jeff Ball, John Carpenter,
Robert Irby and Jack
O’Donnell.
Thanks to the sponsors of
this year’s event: The
Connections Team and
Disciples Women.

Mission Guthrie Parent's meeting – Jan. 17 following the 10:30
service for parent's of 6th – 12th grade students or anyone
interested in learning more about this amazing event! Contact Jeff
Ball or Staci Carey for more information.
We had a great time last Wednesday at our
Kidventure Survivor kickoff party with just over 60
kids!!! We hope you will join us at Kidventure this
Wednesday for week 2 of Survivor-Finding Water (Jesus, the
Living Water). Kidventure meets from 3:45-5:15 downstairs in the
Fellowship Hall and is for those ages 5 thru 6th grade. On Jan. 27
we are taking the Kidventure group to volunteer at Guthrie's Animal
Shelter. It is very important that I get the permission forms back
this week because we have to turn them in a week before our
scheduled trip! If you have multiple children, each child will need
to have one filled out instead of putting all your children's names on
one form. If your children would like to bring items to donate to
the shelter, Suzy said they could always use puppy food, cat food,
and clay cat litter. We can collect items next week at Kidventure if
you want to drop them off when you pick up your child, or you can
bring them anytime within the next 2 weeks to the church office
and we'll be sure to take the items with us on the 27!
Next week in Kid's Worship we will be learning the story from Luke
2:41-52 about boy Jesus in the temple.

Keeping Up
With Karen
I mentioned on Sunday an upcoming statewide event that I hope
you are marking your calendars for in February. The annual
Leadership Training Event in Oklahoma City is coming soon. Before
you stop reading, please take a moment to hear me out on this! I am
the co-director of the event, along with Donna Gilcrease, pastor of
Northwest Christian Church. Our Regional Committee has been
meeting for the past year to plan this awesome event and I think it’s
something you will want to consider attending if you have any interest
in learning more about local/state/world mission projects, various
ways to serve in the church or just spend some time fellowshipping
with people from other Disciples of Christ churches in Oklahoma.
LTS will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6
at Restoration Church (formerly First Christian Church) of Oklahoma
City. There will be an opportunity to take three 45-minute classes
during the morning. A wide variety of classes will be offered in three
tracks: Mission, Spiritual Growth, and Practical Ministry. Anyone in the
congregation is welcome to attend; you can take all your classes in
one track, or you can pick and choose the classes you would like to
attend. (a full list of classes is listed in today’s newsletter).
Our keynote speaker is Vy Nguyen, Executive Director of Week of
Compassion. Vy holds a Master of Divinity from the Divinity School at
the University of Chicago, and earned his B.A. in religious studies with
a minor in environmental sciences from Texas Christian University. He
joined Week of Compassion after serving more than 5 years with
Church World Service for the Southwest Regional Office where he
worked with congregations and donors to increase their fundraising
portfolio.
Nursery and childcare will be provided at the event for infants
through grade 5. Youth, grades 6-12 are invited to attend regular
classes. Registration opens at 8:15 a.m. and there is an opening
worship service at 8:45. The first class begins at 9:30 a.m.
You can go to www.okdisciples.org/lts-2016 for more information
about LTS and to register for classes. You can see class descriptions
and find out more about the speakers for each class. On the website
you will be able to see a full list of exhibitors that will be at the event
as well. The church will pay the registration fee for anyone who would
like to attend.
If you are interested in going and would like more information,
please give me a call/text (615-2240) or e-mail. You can also go
ahead and register on the website and meet us at the event. If you are
interested in riding in the bus, we will plan to meet at the church at 8
a.m. and ride together if enough want to go. We need to know in
advance, so please call the church office (282-4080) or e-mail me at
[email protected] and register for the bus and the event.
We have also set up a link on our church website
(www.fccguthrie.org) to guide you to the LTS site.
I look forward to seeing this event come to fruition!

Thank you for supporting the Christmas
Stocking drive again. Thanks to so many of you,
FCC delivered stockings to 140 students who
ranged from Pre-K to 12th grade. Many thanks
to Karen Allen, Shana Bench and all the
Disciples Women for sorting items and checking
bags to ensure everything was school approved,
and to Janna Pierson, Lori Payne and Allison
Lee for helping deliver the bags. If you visit
Braums in Guthrie please tell them thank you for
donating bags for us to fill this year as well.
We cannot thank you enough for supporting
all the outreach ministries at FCC. Thanks for
sharing the love of Christ.
Much love, The Outreach Team
Our most sincere thank you to Pastor Amy Rogers, members and staff of
First Christian Church for the kindness shown to us during the loss of our loved
one. We so appreciate the help during the planning of the service and the
church providing refreshments for the reception. We especially want to thank
Karen and Shana for their kindness and taking the time to help us with the
details.
You all made us feel so welcome and our appreciation is beyond measure.
Please accept this donation to the church with our sincere thanks.

We are thrilled to announce the addition of Telena Hawkins as our new chair of
the Bereavement Team. Telena brings a wealth of experience in cooking and
coordinating meals to the ministry. She has worked with our Kidventure programs
and was the leader of our Mission Sunday kitchen crew. She has three children, Pazl
(age 1), Rhye (4), and Nova (7). She is married to Houston, who owns an automotive
repair business in Stillwater.
In just her first week as our new chairperson, Telena has already gotten experience
with three dinners and looks forward to coordinating the team. She has set up a
database for the volunteers and those who bring dishes and has been thrilled by the
response of those she has called and e-mailed.
The Bereavement Team ministers to families who have lost loved ones and
prepares a full meal for the family prior to or after the memorial service. If you are
interested in serving on the Bereavement Team as someone who comes to help
prepare and serve the dinners, please contact the church office (282-4080) or Telena
at (919-3245). Another way to help is to prepare a side dish for the dinners. The
church provides the main dish and potatoes for dinners, and we rely on others to
bring salads and desserts. If you can help provide side dishes and aren’t already
participating, please let us know you’d like to help! We can get you in the database
and Telena can call, text or e-mail you when the next dinner is needed.
We are excited to have Telena serving in this role and we are so thankful for all our
volunteers that make this ministry so special for families who are grieving.
Hands-on Mission Project
We are also asking that everyone bring items to
support the hands-on mission project of creating
“First Night Bags” to be donated to T.E.E.M.
