THE UNION
CHAPEL’S 2011
CABARET
On January 29th, over 80 people
packed the Union Chapel for its
fifth CABARET. Part of the
Church's "Wilder Mission" of community outreach, the Cabaret is a
night of great food, mingling with
friends, meeting new people,
laughter, clapping and wonder.
Started in 2006 by Rev Rosemary
Baue and the Deacons, the first
Cabaret showcased island talent
and created an evening of entertainment for the island. The show
took on a life of its own and became a looked- forward -to winter
event, now supported by the whole
community.
This winter, a year of snow, ice,
wind and brrrr..., people were
ready for a good time.
Another delicious dinner was generously prepared by Eliana Spinola
assisted by Janio Spinola, Jan
Cook, Laura Edwards, Nina
Schmid, Louisa Evans and Diane
Dexter. The Tables were set up
and decorated by Gail Cypherd,
with flowers provided by Jay
Scanlan.
curtsy. She was followed by Diane
Dexter, singing a beguiling "I can't
say No‖ to a cowboy grabbed from
the audience, aka Bill Reed. Later
in the show, Diane and her rubber
ducky entertained everyone in the
audience. In a bathtub full of bubbles, they splished, splashed and
set up a contagious rhythm.
Directed by Cynthia Riley, the
2011 Cabaret featured familiar
faces and new ones...all performing in "The Dancing Flamingo
Nightclub".
Miggie and Barry Bryan were engaging as they tap danced and
sang "Me and My Shadow" a reprise of their 2006 performance.
Verana Brooks stunned the audience with her magic show. A natural showman she performed her
magic with assistants Amy
Macaluso, Francesca Pederson,
Tim Patterson and Sara Rafferty.
This year's show featured for the
very first time, the RAISINETTE'S
(Nina Schmid and Tim Patterson)
with the Raisinette Runners (Ann
Banks and Kelly Pangman), the
Raisin sign master (Emily Peabody) and messages from the audience.
The RAISINETTE'S were dancing
to the beat of the Marvin Gaye's
"You heard it on the Grapevine".
Dressed in garbage bags and
tights, the Raisinette's goal was
to raise money for the Union
Chapel, while the audience was
on alert for flying Raisinette
packages, supplied with thanks
by Billy Bloethe.
Patrons (performers) of THE
DANCING FLAMINGO NIGHTCLUB began with Jessica
Scroxton, who wowed the audience with "The Rose"; her
standing ovation went on so
long she had to take a second

ISLAND HEALTH PROJECT NEWS RELEASE
The Island Health Project regrets to announce that Dr. Frank will be leaving us later
this year. Under Dr Frank’s direction the standard of medical care on the Island has
greatly increased over the last six years and for this we thank her. After much consideration she and her family are making plans to move to New Orleans to begin a new
chapter in their lives and IHP wishes them well. They have become a part of our Island community and will all be greatly missed. Island Health would like to assure the
community that it has begun the process to find her replacement and continue the
standard of care she has set.

Senior Lunch January 2011
Attendees to the January 20, 2011 senior luncheon were greeted by yellow, white and blue table decorations prepared by Ellen Pickett and Ann
Banks. The flowers were donated by Jay Scanlan. Everyone delighted in
the spring theme and the breath of fresh air they brought to the snowy winter atmosphere.
A delicious chicken dinner was prepared by the island based Fishers Island Ferry staff. It was fitting that the food was chicken, since the featured
program was all about Chickens... Fishers Island Chickens. The speaker
was Pierce Rafferty, Director of the H.L. Ferguson museum. Pierce's talk
on the rise and fall of the Poultry business on Fishers Island was incredibly
informative and sometimes humorous. Accompanied by pictures, maps,
newspaper reports and extensive research, all in attendance were thrilled
to learn so much about the island's history.
One attendee summed it up best, "That was fascinating!"
It really was.
FI SCHOOL NEWS RELEASE
The Fishers Island School and community proudly announce that Lauren Staples is an accepted student in the regionally competitive ―Avery Point Marine Scholars Program‖. The purpose of this program is to provide high school juniors
from the region with unique opportunities to strengthen their interests in Marine Science through faculty mentoring and
exposure to the college learning environment. The program is designed to award up to ten nominated recipients from
area high schools a position in the program.
The program consists of six Coastal Perspective Lectures held evenings during the spring semester at UCONN’S Avery
Point campus. Students are responsible for the submission of reaction papers following each lecture. In addition, participants also take part in a three-week Project Oceanography Marine Science camp in the summer following the seminars; and are provided an optional opportunity for a research project with Avery Point faculty during the recipient’s senior year in high school.
Lauren Staples is a Junior at the Fishers Island School and a resident of East Lyme, Ct. She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Gary Staples of East Lyme, Ct.

Connecticut College has public skating Sunday afternoons from two to four o’clock. January 30, the Fishers Island Boyz and Girls Groups sponsored a trip to
the rink. Twelve adults and twenty kids were able to
join us for ice time! Although the session started with
a few falls and wobbly legs, some helping hands
were able to get the amateurs around the rink. After
the zamboni re-surfaced the ice, everyone was skating like a pro! Special thanks to our drivers Greg Cypherd, Jamie Doucette, James Hall, Amy Snyder,
Louis Frank, Amy Snyder, Dan Hornstein. The Boyz
and Girls Clubs would also like to thank Helen Rozwadowski and Dan Hornstein for hosting us at there

February Gardening
Tips from Melie
A glorious spring is a bonus we may

dip the cut stems in hot water for a

FUN FACTS FROM THE H.L. FERGUSON MUSEUM
WILL BREED FROGS
At a time when several committees are examining the possibilities of new economic activity that might
bring about an increase in Island population, it may be instructive to
visit the outer limits of E.M. & W. Ferguson’s farm operation in the
late 1890s. The Day released the following story in their August 18,
1898 issue: ―WILL BREED FROGS – New Industry Started by the
Fishers Island Fergusons. The Messrs. Ferguson continue improving
their farm property on Fishers Island by doing original things there.
Recently several of the ponds on the island were stocked with large
frogs. One of the most delectable things these days—so considered
at least by a great many people—are frogs legs. These can be
served in several ways, and in large restaurants they are in great
demand. Frogs breed very rapidly and by another year there will be
plenty of sport for the Fergusons and their friends shooting frogs.
Frog shooting is one of the best things in the life of a sportsman.‖
The article continued with a report about a parallel effort to breed
Shetland ponies on the island. By August 1898, fifty Shetland mares
had already been imported for breeding purposes with the intention
of having stock for market ready by the following year. Unfortunately,
we have been unable to find restaurant reviews of the joys of eating
Fishers Island frog’s legs, or accounts of Fishers Island sportsmen
stalking jumbo Island frogs. However, several images of young Fergusons posing on Shetland ponies have survived in the photography
collection of the Henry L. Ferguson Museum.
