The idea that mental illness is shameful grew out of fear and ignorance about its
causes, effects and treatments. Today, we know more about brain chemistry and its
disturbances than ever before, yet stigma around mental illness persists.
In 1997, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services took a lead role in sparking positive
conversations about mental illness by honoring Tipper Gore at its first Erasing the
Stigma Leadership Awards.
BEATRICE STERN MEDIA AWARD
In 2007, Beatrice Stern established the Beatrice Stern Media Award to recognize creative
individuals who use the media to help erase the stigma of mental illness. A dear friend of Didi
Hirsch, Bea believed that the constructive power of media can change hearts and minds as well
as influence policy. The Media Award honors people in film, television, print, Internet or social
media who have used their power to enlighten us about mental illness and inspire hope.
Since she candidly shared her history of depression, we have honored researchers,
physicians, writers, actors, musicians, sports figures and others who have kept the
conversation going. Thanks to their advocacy, we have made significant progress in
erasing the stigma of mental illness, which will affect half of us sometime in our lives.

Jordana Steinberg, 21, the daughter of Former California Senate
President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg, is a college student at
Sierra Junior College in Rocklin, California. In August 2014, she
went public with the story of her childhood and her struggles with
a serious mood disorder. She is a frequent speaker to youth and
adult audiences, and an advocate for erasing the stigma of mental
illness. She aspires to work and lead in the mental health field.

Founded in 1958, Didi Hirsch’s Suicide Prevention Center helps people at risk of suicide,
concerned loved ones and those who have lost someone to suicide. The first in the nation to
establish a 24-hour hotline, the Suicide Prevention Center answered more than 62,000 calls,
chats and texts in 2014. The Center offers support groups for people who have attempted
suicide or are grieving a suicidal loss and is one of five in the nation taking calls for the
national Disaster Distress Helpline.

affects our opinions of ourselves. All too
often, newly diagnosed young adults lower
their aspirations.

Psychiatric Society. Kita, who has lost three family members to
suicide, takes pride in giving back; when she was young and
uninsured, she was treated for depression at a community mental
health center. She earned her doctorate in psychology at UCLA and
is an award-winning poet. Her first full-length poetry collection,
What Snakes Want (Mayapple Press), will be released in June 2015.

Fewer than half those surveyed by the Kaiser
Foundation said they’d be very/somewhat
comfortable living next door to someone
with a serious mental illness. It’s no surprise
the average delay before seeking treatment
is a decade. Who wants a diagnosis
associated with exclusion?
Studies show that doctors are less likely to
prescribe medications for ailments like heart
disease if one also has a mental illness.
No wonder we think twice about checking
mental illness on a health history. Because
USC Law Professor Elyn Saks also has
schizophrenia, the ER decided she was having
a psychotic episode and sent her home with a
life-threatening brain hemorrhage.
Why must the call for increased mental health
funding almost always occur after a mass
shooting? It fuels the misconception that
persons with mental illness are dangerous.
We allow 16 or so active shooters a year
to become the face of mental illness and
discount 60 million non-violent adults in
the U.S. with a diagnosis.
Only getting to know the people around us
living successfully with their mental illnesses
will change this. That’s why we honor
athletes, musicians, actors and politicians. By
sharing their stories, they replace fear with
acceptance, shame with hope. Stigma is real,
but we are not powerless against it.

backgrounds, but all speak the same message. By using their influence within the public eye,

no-holds-barred revelation of his ongoing struggle with OCD and ADHD has helped others
overcome the stigma attached to mental health issues.
Darrell and Jordana Steinberg - A former California Senate President pro tempore, Mr. Steinberg
coauthored the California Mental Health Services Act (Proposition 63) in 2004, which has funded
mental health care services for more than six million Californians. His daughter, 20-year-old
Jordana has struggled with mental illness since childhood and speaks openly about her illness,

For over 70 years, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services has transformed lives
by providing quality mental health care and substance abuse services. With
11 sites throughout the city, and operating in nearly 100 schools, this agency
has helped over 90,000 adults and children throughout Southern California.
Its Suicide Prevention Center was the first in the nation to provide 24/7 crisis counseling, assisting over
55,000 callers annually and providing support services as needed.

Safe spaces are hard to find in the communities we
serve. Our Metro Center has recently created a new
reading and play area for children in the waiting room.
I sit at your kitchen table,
holding your old, worn teddy bear.
Wishing he was you.
Warren, my love,
the sun is rising for us the living,
but not for you.
We have absorbed the shattering news.
Our son, high school Head Master’s Award winner,
Amherst scholar,
Stanford doctorial candidate,
is not coming home.
He is not living in Massachusetts.
He is not living in Spain.
He is not living in San Francisco.
He is not living in Hollywood.
We listened to the two solemn, polite policemen,
who knocked on our door at 10:30 pm
Our son, the peace lover,
blew out his great brain on a shooting range.
He is not coming home.
Our happy child,
became a depressed adult.
Psychiatrist, psychologists, psycho-pharmacologists
all failed
as did we.
Our sone is not coming home.
The little boy of so much promise
ended his life at thirty,
leaving us bereft,
never to be whole again.
