Meet Big Boyd
Boyd was found as a
malnourished stray in
Anderson County. After
extensive efforts to locate
his family he was neutered,
vaccinated, microchipped,
and listed for adoption.
Public Animal Shelters
Boyd is a strikingly
handsome 3 to 4 year old
Black and Tan Coonhound.
He is an active and funloving guy in search of
a dedicated family that
will include him in day to
day life. He LOVES to
go for car rides and visit
all the local pet friendly
businesses. His interests include hiking, running,
long walks, playing fetch, and eating. He is cat
friendly and gets along with gentle, playful dogs. He
is a lap dog that shares his foster mom’s bed every
night.
Other Humane and Rescue Groups
Boyd has not been crated and would not do
well alone for long periods. He is terrified of
thunderstorms, fireworks, and gunshots and should
not be outside alone during any of those events.

ADVERTISING
Magazine space is no-cost to organizations or individuals caring for
animals who need homes. Monthly business rates are $300/150/75/35
for a full-page/half-page/quarter-page/business card ad in color, and
$200/100/50/25 for grayscale ads. A one year subscription is $25.
ADOPTION CRITERIA
Each organization in Critter has its own adoption criteria. All
organizations require an adoption contract and a fee to recoup basic
expenses. All will require that your adoptee be a pet, not merely
a utility animal for protection or hunting. Most will ensure that the
animals are spayed or neutered at the time of adoption; underfunded
shelters may instead require a spay/neuter contract and a deposit that
will be refunded upon proof of spay or neuter. Most will want to visit
your home and see where the pet will live. Because many of these
animals have not been well treated in the past, extra care is taken to
ensure their safety and happiness in the future.

Buddy is a 7 to 8 year old
red boy with natural ears and
tail. He loves being outside,
and when inside he likes to
cuddle up with his humans.
Buddy is such a sweet, loving
soul, but something may have
happened between him and
other dogs in the past as he
trembles when he sees them.
Pinsch of Heaven volunteers
suggest that Buddy be the
only dog in the home or share
with one other non-dominant,
easy-going dog.
Brutus is a 4 year old male
who was removed from his
previous home due to neglect.
Brutus is a sweet, high-drive
boy who would do best
with a sister or submissive
brother playmate. He doesn’t
bother cats and has done well
around children.

Schotzie
Schotzie, a 3 year old
female, knows some basic
obedience, such as sit and
down; and she is already
house- and crate-trained.
She does need some work
walking nicely on a leash.
She would do best with
another young/active dog.

Rocky is newly available for

Nikki came into the shelter in
March 2014 two days after a
partial tail amputation. After a
total of three tail amputation
surgeries and several months
in a loving foster home, she
has learned to enjoy life as
a dog. If stressed, Nikki will
still chase at her tail, but she
will stop with correction. Nikki
would do best in a home with
another calm dog or possibly
as an only dog.

Exposure to cold air, chilling rain, sleet, and snow can make for itchy paws and flaky skin, but these
aren’t the only discomforts your pet might suffer. Winter walks through ice-melting agents can be downright dangerous, if licked
off bare paws. Some advice from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will help you prevent coldweather dangers from affecting your pet’s health.
• Keep your home humidified and towel dry your pet when you bring him or her inside.
• Never shave your dogs down to the skin in winter, and bath them as little as possible during cold spells.
• Wash and dry your pet’s feet and stomach to remove ice, salt, and chemicals; check for cracks in paw pads or redness
between the toes. Massage petroleum jelly or other protectants into paw pads before going outside to help protect from
salt and chemical agents. Booties will provide even more coverage.
• Use pet-friendly ice melts whenever possible, and thoroughly clean up any coolant or antifreeze spills from your vehicle.
Consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol.
• Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside. If they must be outside
while you are at work, make sure they have a draft-free, well-insulated shelter and plenty of ice-free water.

New Low-Cost Training Keeps Dogs at Home
Hundreds of dogs are returned to shelters every year because
of behavior problems. One of the most effective means to
prevent this is proper training.
The Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley (HSTV) offers a
new low-cost training program to help their adoptive community
keep the commitments to the dogs they adopt.
Group classes are $30 per class and limited to 3 clients.
Classes cover a variety of common behavior and training issues.
They are held 6 days a week, including mornings and weekends
to provide flexibility for your busy lifestyle.
Private in-home classes ($50 per class) are also available for
dogs that may not do well in a class setting with other dogs.
HSTV Adopters receive the first class free and then a $10
discount per class. Non HSTV adopters are also welcome. See
humanesocietytennessee.com/training-2/ for more information.
The HSTV training program is funded through a grant from the PEDIGREE
Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides grants to
organizations that help dogs in need. Learn more about the
PEDIGREE Foundation at www.pedigreefoundation.org.
The Pantry For Feeding Pets
(PFFP project) began to help
people coming to local food pantries for food for themselves,
who were also have difficulty feeding their dogs and cats. Often
what happens is that dog and cat owners think they will have to
abandon their pets, sacrificing the love and companionship of
their animals because they cannot care for them properly.
Pantry For Feeding Pets volunteers believe that just as no
person in our community should go hungry, neither should their
pets go hungry or be forfeited for lack of food.
In March 2009, after soliciting for pet-food donations, PFFP
began distributing dog and cat food to owners in economic
need, shut-ins, and formerly homeless veterans. From
January 1, 2015, through September 30, 2015, PFFP
distributed 18,516 pet-food family portions.
Serving the Knox County and surrounding areas, Pantry For
Feeding Pets distributes free pet food to Senior Citizens, and
low income families through Fish Hospitality Pantries. For more

The American College of Veterinary
Surgeons (ACVS) certifies veterinarians as
specialists in surgery. When your dog or
cat needs advanced surgery, they depend
on you to find a veterinarian with sufficient
experience and training to perform that
surgery. A Board-Certified ACVS Surgeon
provides unconditional reassurance of
advanced training and expertise. . . giving
you the confidence that your pet is in the best
hands. www.acvs.org
