The meeting was called to order at 0730 by Dr. Rice.
VPR Search Update
Dr. Charles Rice stated that he continues to discuss the VPR salary concerns with the
Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel & Readiness. Dr. Seymore Garte was recommended
by Dr. Collins from NIH. Dr. Collins stated that Dr. Garte would be an excellent temporary
solution until we can recruit a permanent replacement. Dr. Rice has met with Dr. Garte and will
work on this temporary solution to filling the VPRposition due to Dr. Levine's upcoming
retirement. Dr. Rice also thanked the VPR Search Committee for their continued efforts working
through this complicated candidate search.

USU Commencement Exercise
Dr. Charles Rice announced that the USU Commencement will be on 17 May 2014 at the
Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall. Secretary Jessica Wright, Under
Secretary of Defense for Personnel & Readiness will be the guest speaker. The U.S. Marine
Corps band will provide music for the event. All faculty and staff are invited to attend and
support our graduating students.
USU Research Days
Dr. Richard Levine reminded everyone that USU Research Days will be 14-15 May
2014. He also asked that all attendees register for the Research Days events. If you miss the
online registration you can register at the event when you attend. The USU Research Days
events are to promote research by faculty, staff, and students at the University and its affiliate
institutions.
Bushmaster Exercise
COL Francis O'Connor stated that the Bushmaster Exercise advance party had arrived at
the exercise location. Students depart at 0600 on 4 May for the exercise and there are currently
enough volunteer patients to complete the training. COL O'Connor expects a successful exercise
and is looking forward to all the staff and faculty coming to support the event.
USU Alumni News
Dr. Charles Rice announced that some of the recent 0- 7 selectees for all three services
are USU alumni. COL Bert Providence (USA), CAPT David Lane (USN), and Col Bob Miller
(USAF) are USU alumni that were recently selected for 0- 7. This has never happened before in
the University's history. Also, the Chief of Staff of the Army has selected Major General Joseph
Caravalho as the Deputy Surgeon General of the Army. MG Caravalho is a USU graduate and
the University looks forward to working with him in his new position.
Around the Table Update
• Dean Patrick Sculley stated that he recently met with the Army Dental Programs
to bring the personnel at Ft. Gordon up to speed on faculty appointments. He also
discussed the status of the Post Graduate Dental College.
• Dr. Carol Romano welcomed the 65 new Class of 2017 GSN students. The 2014
GSN graduation cohort will be smaller than usual due to the transition to the new
three year program.
• Dr. Eleanor Metcalf invited everyone to attend the Graduate Student Colloquium
on 14 May from 1300 to 1600. Everyone is also invited to the Bullard Lecture
which will be Dr. Douglas Lowy, Deputy Director of the National Cancer
Institute. There will be a poster presentation session at the end of the day.

• CAPT Mark Stephens announced that a new Memorandum of Understanding has
been signed between the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the
University covering the University Family Health Center.
• Dr. Brian Reamy stated that Dean Kellermann has officially formed a search
committee for the Chair of Pathology. The committee will be Co-Chaired by
CAPT Eric Elster and Dr. Harvey Pollard.
• COL Lisa Moores announced that the entire class of 2016 has completed Step 1
with only two failures in the entire class. The mean score was at 230 which is
above the national mean. The University has never been above the national mean

so this is a great accomplishment. Of the two that failed, one has already taken
and passed. On 15 May at 1100 in Sanford Auditorium will be the Graduation
Awards Ceremony. Also, a final reminder of the USU Dining Out event will be
on 30 May at 1800 in the large dining room.
COL Francis O'Connor stated that he just returned from Lackland AFB after
investigating the death of a trainee due to sickle cell trait. COL O'Connor's team
provided some recommendations to improve training. His team will also be
visiting the Army Ranger Training School to observe and provide
recommendations to their training.
Ms. Arta Maboubi stated that NSAB changed the light bulbs in the USU Garage
to an energy saving bulb and President Rice has not been pleased with the results.
NSAB did substitute some higher wattage bulbs in a test area of the garage with
little to no success. There have been numerous complaints by USU faculty and
staff on the limited lighting in the garage due to the change. USU Facilities and
NSAB will continue to work this issue.
Mr. Tim Rapp expressed his appreciation to all the personnel involved in the
Registrar' s Information Work Group. The work has paused temporarily while
paperwork is completed and processed. The Work Group will begin again in
approximately three weeks. We are currently about two weeks ahead of the
scheduled timeline.
Col Kevin Glasz announced that he and Mr. Robert Thompson attended the recent
retirement ceremony for General Ted Wong. The USU Medal was presented to
General Wong at the ceremony. Col Glasz reiterated that award submissions be
forwarded to the Brigade in time for the award to be presented here before the
military member retires or departs.
Dr. Richard Levine announced that Dr. Toya Randolph is the new Assistant Vice
President for Research Administration.
Dr. Marguerite Littleton-Kearney invited everyone to the 2014 Faye Abdellah
Lecture which will be at 1000 on 7 May 2014. The speaker will be Dr. Ann
Burgess, from Boston College, an expert on sexual assault.
Dr. Gerald Quinnan stated that the Army has approved an ALP billet for an Army
member to join the faculty. Dr. Rice voiced his appreciation for this
accomplishment.
LTC Shad Deering announced that the Simulation Center will be accepting 5,000
square feet of surgery space. Also, Simulation Center personnel will be going out
to Bushmaster to support the exercise with simulations, cut-suits, etc.
