2005 Season Review
Clemsonʼs 2005 rowing season was “our best year ever in
terms of teamwork, effort, and intensity”, stated Tiger head coach
Susie Lueck following the NCAA Regionals in Oak Ridge, TN.
Clemson found success on a regional and national level and collected numerous accolades throughout their seventh season.
Clemson began the fall season by playing host to neighboring
foes South Carolina and Georgia in the Tail of the Tiger regatta on
Lake Hartwell. Impressively, Clemson won each race it entered,
showing their successful regiment of aerobic conditioning and intense training.
Clemson also competed on the national and regional scene
in the fall of 2004. The Tigers rowed in the Head of the Charles
(Boston, MA), Head of the Tennessee (Knoxville, TN), and Head
of the Chattahoochee (Gainesville, GA).
The Tigers showed resiliency at the Head of the Tennessee
regatta. Windy conditions and rough water made it a trying event
for the rowers, but they persevered and were able to bring home
good finishes. The novice teams had two boats finish 1-2 in the
collegiate novice 8+ race, while the Tigers swept the first three
finishing positions in the collegiate novice 4+ race. The varsity
program had two boats finish second and third behind host school
Tennessee in the championship 8+ race.
The Head of the Chattahoochee proved successful once
again for the novice teams. Clemson won both the 4+ and 8+
freshman collegiate events at the regatta. It proved to be a great
momentum builder for the spring season.
The 2005 spring season brought about many firsts for the Tiger rowing program, with much of the highlights produced by the
novice 8+ crew. The spring got underway with Clemson sweeping
Eastern Michigan at home on Lake Hartwell. The second varsity
8+ won in impressive fashion, as the boat lead by 50 meters over
the Eagles at the 1,500m mark.
The Tigers continued their strong racing at home by hosting
four schools in the Solid Orange Clemson Challenge regatta on
March 19. The novice teams won their races, after closely contested battles between the Tigers and the University of Buffalo.
Clemsonʼs second varsity 8+ had a dominant performance in a
seven-boat race, winning with a time of 6:59.6. The nearest competitor was Indiana almost 12 seconds behind. That performance
helped Clemson earn ACC Crew of the Week honors. The crew
was comprised of Sarah Canterbury (coxswain), Margaret Gattis,
Jenny Champa, Jaclyn Rath, Brittney Gamble, Allison Spiker, Liz
Averyt, Mary Nell Green, and Laura Nichols.
On March 26, Clemson traveled to Oak Ridge, TN, the site
that would eventually host the NCAA Regionals. After a week of
spring break training on Melton Hill Lake, the Tigers faced Cincinnati and Dartmouth. The Tigers won three of six races. Clemson
won in the second varsity 8+ (6:52.6), second novice 8+ (7:20.7),
and varsity 4+ (7:35.0). The second novice 8+ and varsity 4+
boats finished 20 seconds ahead of their competitors. The varsity
8+, novice 8+, and second varsity 4+ brought home second-place
finishes for the Tigers.
The Tiger rowers made a splash on the national scene at the
esteemed Windermere Crew Classic, which featured 17 of the
top-ranked teams in the nation competing at Redwood Shores in
California. Clemson made program history by defeating national
powerhouse Washington in a novice 8+ dual race. The win was
the first ever for the Tigers over Washington (the alma mater of
Clemson head coach Susie Lueck). The Tigers led by almost an
entire boat length at the 1,000m mark before the Huskies crept to
within a half-boat length. Despite a strong sprint from Washington,
the Tigers maintained their lead and finished in a time of 7:18.08,
with Washington finishing at 7:20.67.
Clemson also made schools take notice of their varsity program, as the Tigersʼ first varsity 8+ was right behind then 13thranked UCLA in a dual race that same afternoon. UCLA finished
in a time of 6:40.25, with Clemson right behind at 6:42.99.
Following a two-week training regiment, the Tigers returned to
the friendly home waters of Lake Hartwell to host the ACC Championship. Clemson made plenty of noise, as the novice 8+ won
its first conference title and became just the second boat to ever
defeat Virginia during the six years of the event. The Cavaliers
went on to win in overall team standings, but the Tigers finished
second in the varsity 8+, second varsity 8+, and varsity 4+. At
the conclusion of the event, head coach Susie Lueck was named
the ACC Coach of the Year for 2005. It marked the second time
during her tenure at Clemson she has won the award. Clemson
rowers Ashlee Brown, Liz Averyt, and Sarah Cooper were named
to the All-ACC team as well.
The Tigers then prepared for the NCAA Regionals, the Aramark Central/South Sprints held on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge,
TN. Clemsonʼs youth again showed the programʼs bright future.
The second novice 8+ finished in second place in a final-only format, just behind winner Ohio State. The novice 8+ finished fourth
in one of the tightest grand finals in regional history. Seven boats
competed in the race, and all were separated by a total of just
10.56 seconds. The Tigers took fourth with a time of 7:11.60, behind Michigan, Virginia, and Ohio State. Clemsonʼs varsity 4+ finished ninth overall and in third place of the B final (7:48.47), while
the second varsity 8+ finished fifth in the B final.
As the season concluded, the honors continued for the Clemson rowing team. Brown was named a 2005 first-team All-South
Region rower, while freshman Liz Giannini received second-team
honors. Giannini served as the varsity 8+ coxswain all season.
Brown was also one of three Clemson rowers honored as CRCA
National Scholar Athletes. Allison Spiker and Kristen Weinacker
were also chosen to the esteemed list. Susie Lueck was chosen
as South Region Coach of the Year, while Kelly Lynch was honored as South Region Assistant Coach of the Year. It marked the
third consecutive year that she won the award.
The novice 8+ crew made history by becoming the first Clemson
boat to defeat national power Washington in the 2005 season.

Clemson Rowing Facilities
Clemson’s Six-Lane Race Course
The Clemson Rowing boathouse is located on the western edge of Clemsonʼs campus, overlooking beautiful Lake Hartwell. The current rowing facility includes
two boat storage bays, a repair shop, the coachesʼ offices and a locker room. The Tigers are planning to break ground on an additional facility that will house an
expanded locker room, additional workout space, a team meeting room and an athletic training room. A rendering of the planned facility is pictured below.
Only a quarter of a mile from the other athletic facilities, the boathouse seems worlds apart lying in a secluded wooded area on the shore of one of the Southeastʼs largest lakes. With 56,000 acres of water and 962 miles of shoreline, Lake Hartwell offers plenty of rowable water. Built as an Army Corps of Engineers
proje
The Tigersʼ row state-of-the-art, custom built Pocock Racing Shells from Everett, Washinton. The fleet consists of eight 8+ʼs, six 4+ʼs, eight pairs/doubles, and
two singles. Pocock is the leading boat builder pioneering racing shell specificaly designed for the speed at which women row.
Lake Hartwell facilitates an ideal venue for the Tigersʼ fully bouyed, six-lane 2000m race course. The entire course is visible from the boat house.
