Theo Wanne is the eminent world expert on the design and manufacturing of
saxophone and clarinet mouthpieces, and his company is the world leader in
quality and innovation with five patents and patents pending.
Theo started as an old-fashioned apprentice in 1976 designing and building
custom professional bicycle frames by hand. From 1987 to 1997, he traveled and
studied at Macalester College, a Buddhist monastery in Thailand, the California
Institute of the Arts, and finally graduated from the Naropa Institute, where he
completed his degree in Musical Improvisation as a Spiritual Path.
Later, Theo learned saxophone repair with master repairman, Bret Gustafson, in Philadelphia, PA. During this time he sold hundreds
of vintage and custom handmade mouthpieces with a reputation for being the best in the world. When the demand for his
mouthpieces got overwhelming Theo started his own store Saxophone Mouthpiece Heaven, which quickly became the world’s
most comprehensive resource on the design and history of saxophone mouthpieces. This knowledge is now available on Theo’s new
website www.theowanne.com. The world’s top musicians such as Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, Eric Alexander, Jan Garbarek, Tim
Price, and more came to work with Theo. Seeing the absolute joy in a musicians face when helping them find their sound is what
has always motivated and inspired Theo in his craft.
Theo discovered many ways to improve upon vintage and new woodwind products. In 2007, Theo started manufacturing his
own line of mouthpieces and saxophones. To maintain his reputation for quality and innovation Theo utilized some of the most
sophisticated computer aided design and manufacturing techniques on the planet.
