West Jefferson Medical Center Continues Tradition of Excellence
National Recognitions Highlight West Jefferson’s Rankings
It’s an exciting time for West
Jefferson Medical Center
(WJMC). We are proud to receive
two national recognitions.
One of the recognitions is the
Healthgrades ® 2016 Patient
Safety Excellence Award™. This
announcement tells us WJMC is
among the Top 5% of hospitals
nationwide to excel in Patient
Safety standards. WJMC was
the only hospital in the Greater
New Orleans area* to achieve
this national recognition.
“The recipients of the
Healthgrades 2016 Patient
Safety Excellence Award have
not only found ways to reduce
patient safety events, but to
outperform expectations in
prevention of safety incidents,”
said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy
Of ficer, Healthgrades. “We
applaud these hospitals for
their performance and for their
organizational commitment to
delivering high-quality care.”
WJMC also received an “A’ grade
for Patient Safety in the Spring
2016 Hospital Safety Score from
The Leapfrog Group, a national
patient safety watchdog. This
score ranks WJMC among the
safest hospitals in the United
States.
“Avoidable deaths in hospitals
should be the number one
concern of our health care
leaders. Hospitals that earn an
‘A’ from Leapfrog are leaders in
saving lives, and we commend
them and urge their continued
vigilance,” said Leah Binder,
president and CEO of The
Leapfrog Group.
“West Jefferson’s ‘A’ rating
from The Leapfrog Group is
a testament to our continued
commitment in putting our
patients’ safety first,” said
Nancy R. Cassagne, CEO of
West Jefferson Medical Center.
“I would like to thank all of our
physicians, nurses and staff
who work diligently every day
to ensure that we’re providing a
safe environment and the best
care possible to our patients
and our community.”
All of this means you can rest
assured that when you or
your loved one are receiving
care at West Jefferson, you’re
in the safest hands possible.
Just a couple of more reasons
to choose West Jefferson…
award-winning care right in your

Men’s Health
Father’s Day is a way to
celebrate the men in our lives,
and it’s also a good time to
remind them to keep their
health in mind so they can
celebrate many more Father’s
Days. The CDC recommends
the following health tips:
• Get Good Sleep: 7-9 hours
of sleep is recommended for
adults. If you cut down on
your beauty rest, you increase
your risk for chronic health
problems and accidents.
Think heart disease and car
accidents.
• Toss Out the Tobacco: You
know why it’s bad, and we
know it’s hard to quit. West
Jefferson offers FREE classes
and FREE medication to help
you quit. Don’t make excuses;
call 504-349-2340 today.
• Move More: Take a bike ride,
toss a ball. Adults need at
least 2½ hours of moderateintensity aerobic activity (such
as brisk walking) every week,
and muscle strengthening
activities that work all major
muscle groups (legs, hips,
back, abdomen, chest,
shoulders and arms) on two
or more days a week. You
don’t have to do it all at once.
Spread your activity out during
the week
• Eat Healthy: Eat less salt, try
more veggies. Mom had the
right idea. A variety of fruits
and vegetables can protect
you from chronic disease, not
to mention help you look fit.
• Tame Stress: This one is a real
killer… literally. Sometimes
stress can be good. However,
it can be harmful when it is
severe enough to make you
feel overwhelmed and out of
control. Take care of yourself.
Avoid drugs and alcohol. Find
support. Connect socially.
Stay active.
• Stay on Top of Your Game:
No, we don’t mean your
basketball game! See your
doctor or nurse for regular
checkups. Certain diseases
and conditions may not have
symptoms, so checkups
help diagnose issues early
or before they can become
a problem. Ask your doctor
what preventative tests you
need.
• Find Affordable Healthcare:
The Affordable Care Act is
here. You can get health care
and pay what you can afford,
based on your income.

getting healthy, make an

Doctors physician today by

Don’t Let Allergies, Asthma Spoil a Summer Soiree
Summertime means outdoor
fun at weddings, festivals and
picnics. Uninvited guests such
as stinging insects and pollen
can ruin the fun for the millions
of Americans with allergies and
asthma.
Allergies and asthma can lead
to sneezing, wheezing and itchy
misery - and sometimes more
serious reactions.
People with allergies and asthma
can still enjoy outdoor events by
planning ahead:
• Treat Before You Go. Take
allergy medication before
walking out the door. Allergy
medication is not as effective
if taken after symptoms begin.
Travel with your EpiPen ® if
prescribed by your doctor.
• Go Undercover. Big, wraparound sunglasses help keep
pollen from getting into your
eyes.
• Avoid Bees. If you’re allergic
to bees or other stinging
insects, avoidance is your
best bet. Keep your distance
from uncovered food and
trash cans which can attract
bees.
• Be Cautious at the Food
Table. Avoid foods in which
nuts, dairy and other
common allergens can be
lurking, such as sauces and
desserts.
• Stick to the Middle. Poison
ivy can lurk in bushes and
other foliage, so stay in open
areas where you’re less likely
to brush up against it.
• Pay Attention to Ozone
Alerts. High temperatures
mixed with pollution can
pose a problem for people
with asthma. Carry a quick
relief inhaler.
Allergists have expertise to
select the most effective
treatment options and also
can determine if you should
consider allergy shots which
are effective for seasonal and
stinging insect allergies.
To schedule an appointment
with an allergist, call
504.349.1789.
