Issue NO. 45
Welcome to the Mustang Six Association’s newsletter. Our online Association
is dedicated to ALL six cylinder Mustangs of all years, both inline 6’s and V-6’s. We are the
ONLY Association in the WORLD dedicated exclusively to the six cylinder Mustangs.
Membership is open to all who own a 6 cylinder Mustang, or even those who just love
Mustangs. There is no cost to join, the only thing we ask is that each member submit a few
stories and pictures of their cars or an article of interest concerning their 6 cylinder Mustang
each year, so it can be published in our online magazine.

ell you’ve noticed I’m sure , that I’m at it again! I’m the type who’s always looking for ways to improve
things and make them better, and our M6A newsletter is no exception. Having the newsletter published biweekly was actually a very tough decision for me. I absolutely love putting it together but I realized that was
all I was doing for M6A was the newsletter, and there were other ideas and projects that weren't getting the
attention they should have. There was also the concern of using up all the stories that I had on file to put in the newsletter. I
am happy to say that there are a few stories trickling in, but there still are so many members who haven’t sent us their story.
If your one of those I encourage you to send them in!
There are lots of exciting things going on and happening with M6A . Our Facebook page continues to grow in it’s
membership, we are at 132 members and rising. Our Website is in the process of moving to it’s new home on the internet,
and will be “open for business” by the end of the month. For me one of the most exciting things happening is that we are in
the planning stages of the first ever 6 cylinder Mustang reunion that’s going to be held on Memorial day weekend next year.
We have been invited by the Blue Oval Mustang Club in Hermann, Missouri to be a part of their “show and Shine” car show.
Make sure you read THIS IS THE END section for all the details. I’m also working on putting together a sponsors page and
I’m looking for sponsors willing to give M6A members a discount when they purchase items from them. If you know a vendor
whom might be interested let them know, or if you have a vendor you’d like to suggest let me know. I’m sure you have noticed that M6A has a redesigned logo, the new logo has a 3D effect that really makes it stand out. Member Terry
Woods ,who is my webpage guru, redesigned it for us, I think he did a terrific job.
The votes are all in for the MUSTANG of the MONTH contest and it was a tie! Both entries are M6A’s MUSTANG of
the MONTH. Their cars will be featured in the next two editions of the newsletter. That's the good news, the bad news is
there are no entries for the next contest. But it’s not to late, send two of the best pictures of your Mustang and they will be
placed in the PICK YOUR SIX section for our members to vote on them for MUSTANG of the MONTH
If you get the Mustang Times magazine, there’s a good chance you received a new magazine in the mail last week
called Mustang Driver, as for what the magazine is about let me quote Marc Christ the editor, “Welcome to the place where
there are no strangers, only people we have yet to meet: where there are no road trips too long (or too short), and no Mustangs too mild (or too wild).” Several of the writers are from other well known magazines, including Donald Farr. Their website address is http://mustangdriver.com The publisher of the magazine John Nichols has joined our Facebook page, and is
on our mailing list to get our newsletter so here's another national magazine that could be interested in the story and pictures of your Mustang!
Speaking of national magazines, I’m proud to announce that Tom McCool, has become the third M6A member to
have his car and story appear in Mustang Times, he was in the November edition. Check it out on page 10 of the newsletter,
congratulations Tom!
Since the next edition of the newsletter will be coming out the day after Thanksgiving, that wonderful or notorious day
depending how you look at, called Black Friday, I want to wish every one of our members a wonderful Thanksgiving Day. I
hope the day will be full of friends, family and food, and a day that wonderful new memories are made. This editorial is being
written on Veteran's Day, so I want to thank all those members of M6A, as well as all the others who served or are serving in
our military for their service to our country. We all can thank these brave hero’s for the freedom we have, and our freedom
that they protect daily for us.
So until next time , have a great day and don’t forget to hug your spouse or loved one and then your Mustang!
Terry

MY 1965 SIX CYLINDER MUSTANG COUPE PROJECT - BY RAY SCHRAM
I really appreciate that the MUSTANG SIX ASSOCIATION has been restarted. I had no idea until a post came up in the Concourse Mustang Forum about the M6A. I am glad to be onboard.
My second and current project is a somewhat rough '65 coupe which was not a true barn find, although it was parked outside of a barn under an overhang. It belonged to a lady whose husband planned to rebuild it with his grandson, but he passed away before any work started.
To that end, I promised that I would take good care of her husband's car and restore it to factory new, and I would let her be the first to see
it when it was finished.
Currently, my Mustang is nearly in as many pieces as it possibly could be, including everything except for its steering box and alternator.
They will come apart eventually. The engine, however, is around 99% completed.
The body is pale yellow, but I found evidence of white paint. This would explain why the data plate is in so much better shape than the rest
of the car as it may have been replaced.
I also discovered that my original headliner was white. My Mustang also had a white vinyl top and a palomino interior, and because it was
a January '65 build, it has some '64-1/2 parts and details.
If I can be of help to other M6A members with locating difficult-to-find parts, answering mechanical questions or providing information in
general, I would be happy to give it my best.
I am neither an MCA judge nor an expert in all areas, but I have a fair amount of knowledge of the 1965 models, with the '66 next and the
'64-1/2 after that, and then the '67 to '73 Mustangs. I may be able to help to some degree.

(Editor's
Note: In SPRINT PRINT - Issue Number 12, Tom Riley discussed locating his Sprint 200 coupe in Florida and
bringing it to Ohio. In this SPRINT PRINT issue, he gives us an update on his coupe at its new home. Thanks, Tom!)
"I purchased my Sprint 200 in November 2013 with the intention of bringing it to my home in Dayton, OH in the spring. Prior to getting the car to the shipping company for its trip to Ohio, I had the opportunity for one more show in Florida. That show was in Pinellas Park, Florida where it earned Best in Class honors in the concours class.
Since my car's arrival in Dayton, I have enjoyed showing it in local and regional shows. It earned an Award of Distinction at the Ault
Park Concours D'Elegance in Cincinnati, and an Award of Excellence at the Arthritis Foundation Car Show in Columbus.
I included a picture of my Sprint taken at a cruise in at a local Ford dealer over the weekend of August 2, 2014."

OUR 2011 SIX CYLINDER MUSTANG - BY AL AND CATHY BARRETT
Sign us up! We have a 2011 six cylinder MCA Premium Package Mustang.
We have slightly altered our horse with a Magnaflow exhaust from the catalytic converters back, a K&N air filter, and we
took out our 2:73 rear axle and replaced it with a 3:31.
We also have hood shock struts, tinted glass, a power passenger seat (self-installed), and a space saver spare tire. It was
delivered with a battery powered air pump with sealer.
We were part of the Mustang 50th Anniversary Celebration joining the Great American Pony drive in Nashville and continuing on to Charlotte. It was awesome!
We are exploring new ways to give our little horse more off-the-line punch. A picture of our proud pony is included.

ANOTHER M6A MEMBER FEATURED IN MUSTANG TIMES!
In week no. 39’s edition of our newsletter, we featured Tom McCool’s beautiful 67 Sports Sprint
convertible. I’m excited to share the news that Tom’s beautiful Mustang was featured in the “MY MUSTANG” section of the November edition of Mustang Times. For those of you who don’t have a subscription to Mustang Times, here is the feature. Congratulations Tom, for being the third M6A member to
have your Mustang in the Mustang Times magazine!

A TRIBUTE TO OUR HEROS
M6A member Chuck Heath sent us this,
“Got our little 67 Sprint dressed for a Veterans Day Parade, and the 04 3.7 was in
it with us “

My entry and involvement in M6A and the Mustang hobby revolves around a 1966 Sprint convertible. Back in the early 1980's, my father-inlaw, Buddy, bought the car. He did some minor restoration to it before selling it to my wife's cousin, Ronnie so that he could replace it with a
second Mustang; this time an automatic. Dad past away in 1994, but not before selling his Mustang and Model A. Several years later, Ronnie
decided to sell Dad's Mustang to finance a swimming pool, and asked my wife Sharon if we would like to buy it. We jumped at the chance. We
figured that it was a way to have a little piece of Dad with us.
I haven't done all that much in the way of restoration to it yet. I have several "projects" that are taking priority right now. But I have done some
extensive research, mostly on the 1964-1/2 through 1966 models, and mostly on the production process and the use of codes and build sheets. I
guess you can say I've developed a pretty fair understanding of build sheet codes as a result, and try to help others with that knowledge.
I recently had an email from a fellow named James. He was inquiring about the build sheet of his 1965 Mustang GT. His son Evan also bought a
1965 Mustang, a 6-cylinder, and was asking about help. Of course I suggested M6A, and Evan has joined.
I put together a small email of information for James and Evan, which I'm sharing with our readers, below:
"Probably the best resource for six cylinder performance modifications is the book, The Ford Falcon Six Cylinder Performance Handbook by
David and Dennis Schjeldahl. The early Mustangs shared the same engine as the Falcon, and the book covers the 144, 170, 200, and 250 c.i.
versions. The 64-1/2 Mustangs started out with the 170 c.i. engine. For the 1965 model year the engine was bumped to 200 c.i. And my 1966
Mustang Sprint has the 200 engine. Engine color changed from red in 1965 to blue in 1966. The book covers such things as Cylinder heads,
Valve Trains, Compression, Porting, Ignition, Carburetion, Exhaust System, Block, Camshafts, Transmissions and Rear Ends. It also has several
chapters dedicated to performance upgrade "How-To's". It's a great resource.
Classic Inlines http://www.classicinlines.com/ sells many performance parts that may be of interest to anyone considering modifications, including an aluminum intake manifold to open up some carburetor options. The engine displacement really doesn't warrant the use of a 4-barrel carburetor, although many guys do run one. I would suggest a 2-barrel though; and the Falcon engine book gives a nice overview of the Autolite
2100. Offenhauser also makes an aluminum intake modification. I'm running an Offenhauser Open Plenum intake on my grandson's 1970 Ford
pickup with the "big block" 300 six cylinder, a small Holley 4-barrel 390 cfm, hypereutectic pistons, Dura-Spark Ignition and a mild cam.
Another great resource is the Ford Six Performance Forum at http://www.fordsix.com/forum/ sponsored by Classic Inlines. All kinds of useful
information there.
The maximum volumetric efficiency of the 200 c.i. engine is probably about 277 cfm. A Holley 2-barrell with this cfm or less would be a good
choice, or you can use the Autolite 2100 with either a 1.01 or 1.02 venturi size.
You can also open up the breathing of the 200-6 by installing headers, and a larger single exhaust, or dual exhaust system. There are many muffler options to give him a nice throaty sound - comparable to the 8-cylinders.
The 6-cylinder Mustangs normally came with either the 2.77 three-speed manual, or the C-4 automatic. However, there was also an option for
the Dagenham 4-speed manual. The manual transmissions were really light weight and likely won't handle much if you decide to modify the
engine. The C-4 however, can handle much more, and also can be modified. If you want a final drive ratio less than 1:1 you might want to look
at a T-5 manual. My Sprint came with the 2.77 manual and I will be converting it to a C-4. (This was the reason Dad sold it to begin with).
The rear end likely is either the 3.20 or 2.83 ratio 7.25" integral rear axle. The 3.20 was used on both the 3-speed and C-4, while the 2.83 was
only used behind the C-4. They also had limited-slip options. I'm not sure what your son is running, but if he can bump the horsepower up some
he might be able to drop in a 2.83 ring & pinion and still have good performance in terms of MPG's and get-up & go. You might also replace the
7.25" rear end with the 8" that was used in the 8-cylinder cars. The problem with that, however, is that the wheels are 5-stud, while the 6cylinders are 4-stud. You'll end up having to change the spindles on the front if you upgrade to the 8" rear - which may not necessarily be a bad
thing if he wants to upgrade to front disc brakes anyway.
If he wants to stay "stock" there is a modification for the Autolite 1100 1-barrell that Pony Carburetors used to perform. Pony Carburetors has
since gone out of business, but I think there are one or two shops out there that can still perform the modification. And porting the log intake and
exhaust would be undetectable, yet still boost performance".

LOOKING FOR FRONT END SHEETMETAL FOR 66 SPRINT
M6A Member Michael Zerishnek is looking for front end parts for his 1966 Sprint. Michael is a recent graduate of McPherson College, where he got his degree in Automotive Restoration Technology. Michael is needing both fenders, hood, and front valance.
Unfortunately these parts were stolen from his car, while it sat in the driveway of his home. If you have any of these parts available, let me know and I’ll put you in contact with Michael.

FIRST M6A 6 CYLINDER REUNION
IN THE PLANNING STAGES
The Midwest Blue Oval Club has invited M6A to be a part of their Memorial Day celebration of Fords in beautiful
Hermann, Missouri. The scheduled dates are May 21-23, 2015. The proposed cost for the weekend event is
$25.00 per car. This fee does not include the banquet that will be held or fees for the golf tournament. Here is the
link info to their website: http://www.midwestblueoval.club To quote from their website:
“Hundreds of Fords and thousands of people will descend upon historic Hermann, Missouri for the Blue Oval Rally
on Memorial Day weekend in 2015. Show off your Ford-powered machine on the streets of town, stay in a bed &
breakfast, cruise around to the various wineries, hunt for antique treasures at the many shops – so much to do! “
I have been in touch with Jim Reese, their Car Show Director, about having M6A being a special part of this show.
If we would have enough members attending, there would be a section set up just for M6A. This is not a judged
show, and would just be a chance to have the first 6 cylinder Mustang reunion, and a chance for M6A members to
meet and spend a fun weekend with each other. The event is family and kid friendly with lots of things to do for
both adults and children. Hermann has many winery's and antique stores, and is dotted with both hotels and
charming bed and breakfasts. Jim is working with other Show Directors, to get more information on room rates and
availability for us.
This would be the first opportunity for us as an Association to be a part of a major event like this, as well as a
chance to further spread the word in the Mustang and Ford community about who and what we are. What we need
to do now is find out how many M6A members would be interested and would want to attend such an event. This
will be critical in determining how both M6A and the Midwest Blue Oval Club will proceed with the planning process. So if this is something that would be of interest to you, please contact me and let me know.
A BIG THANKS TO MUSTANG CLUBS!
I want to thank the many Mustang clubs for helping tell the Mustang world about the Mustang Six Association.
through their newsletters, websites, and Facebook pages. Here are a few that shared with me that they have,
but I know there are many other clubs that aren’t listed that have as well, and I want to thank each and everyone of them. I invite our members to check their clubs out!
