PRESIDENT‘S LETTER
Dear PRA Members,
As your new president, I want to thank Steve Berry our outgoing president
for his three years of great leadership for the PRA. We are fortunate that
Steve will still serve on the Board and continue to provide us with his experience and perspective. Also a special thanks to Steve and Roger Clapp
who were the Co-Chairmen of the very successful PRA 25th Anniversary
Celebration. It was great to catch up with so many old friends.
Re-elected to three year Board terms were: Steve Berry, Roger Clapp,
Doris Harriman, Florence Jones, Lucille Kelley, and Dick Rosenblatt.
Officers newly elected are: Jim Grunst as President, Steve Berry as
Treasurer, Doris Harriman as First Vice President and Richard Rosenblatt as Second Vice President. See the sidebar on the right for the
lineup.
I hope to see you at our Fall Luncheon on October 20. Our speaker will be
Niel Orlando, Director of Senior Crime and Abuse Prevention for the Norfolk
District Attorney’s Office.
Our Luncheon meetings are great reunion times and an opportunity to
catch up on the activities of old friends. The reservation form for the October 20 Luncheon is in this newsletter, so while it is on your mind, fill out the
form and mail it in.

Past President's Letter
What a great way to end my three years as PRA President, with our super
25th year celebration in May. Well over 600 people attended, many of
whom I had not seen in years. It was great fun and a good sign that the
PRA is doing well (our membership is actually growing) and will continue for
many years. Pictures of the event are in this newsletter, as well as on our
new website (www.polaroidretirees.org).
I've enjoyed my term as President, and thank all the other Board Members
for their support over the past three years. It's been so much fun, that I've
agreed to remain involved as Treasurer.
Congratulations to Jim Grunst, your new President. I wish him well in this
new role and hope he has as much fun as I did.
Steve Berry, Past PRA President

POLAROID RETIREES ASSOCIATION
2009 TREASURER‘S REPORT
Roger Clapp; Treasurer; May 12, 2010
At the Annual Meeting portion of the 25th Anniversary Celebration I presented a very abbreviated
Treasurer’s Report for 2009 and promised a more detailed report in the newsletter as follows:
1. AT THE END OF 2009, THE PRA HAD SLIGHTLY OVER $30,000 IN CASH – In early 2009 we
lost $2,500 in a long term investment which we have since sold; all our money is now in insured CD’s
or MM funds. Once again we should thank Adelaide Sutton who significantly funded the PRA in her
will.
2. WE ENDED 2009 WITH 1640 PAYING MEMBERS – This is the third year in a row where the
addition of new members has offset attrition resulting in relative constant membership.
REMEMBER THAT THE ONLY REQUIREMENT TO JOIN THE PRA IS A SENIORITY DATE PRIOR
TO JULY 2002.
3. THE PRA OPERATES ON BASICALLY A BREAKEVEN BASIS. INCOME (dues + interest)
EQUALS EXPENSES (newsletter + lunch subsidy (we subsidize each lunch to the extent of about
$10 per attendee not including prizes and raffles) + donations + membership + administration.
4. WE FIGURED THAT THE PRA WILL NOT LAST FOREVER, WE’RE ALL GETTING OLDER. SO
IN 2009 WE PLANNED TO SPEND PART OF THE CASH, an extra $2000 to 2500, part at lunches
(like the raffle tickets), part benefiting the entire membership (five $100 drawings).
5. IN 2010, WE WILL SPEND AN ADDITIONAL PORTION OF OUR CASH FOR THE 25th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION. Thank you again to Lantana for waiving the 20% house charge, approximately $3600 in recognition of our long relationship.
6. I HAVE ENJOYED BEING TREASURER for the past 3 years, and President for 3 years before
that, and wish Steve Berry well in the Treasurer role.
TIRED OF WRITING CHECKS?

The PRA is now offering a LIFETIME membership. For $100 you can have a PRA membership and

check every year. Just check off Lifetime Membership on the Membership Application and send in
$100 the next time your dues is due, and you will be paid up for life.
Need Camera testing equipment
I've been asked by the folks in the "Impossible Project" to see if anyone knows the whereabouts of any Polaroid
camera testing equipment. The company is trying to refurbish cameras and has a need for these tools. If anyone has information about this equipment, please call Dan Cence at 508-695-3780

bought one just like that! We stayed and enjoyed our
vacation for the next 2 weeks and went back to Natick and sold our house there in 2 days (try that
now!). I took the retirement package and said goodbye to the snow, sleet and rain and moved to Scottsdale!
What we found were good friends, open airy homes,
beautiful desert, mountains up close and big sky in all
directions. Of course there are rattlers, scorpions,
tarantulas and heat but those are minor issues compared to the beauty of this country. We love it here
and would be hard pressed to ever live back East.
Since it was too early for me to retire I took a job
managing the computer/printer repair facility for the
Scottsdale Unified School District. It's very interesting and challenging work and there isn’t a week that
goes by that I don’t learn something new.
We live in a big house on the side of a mountain with
a dog, some fish and a desert tortoise that shows up
when it's nice and warm along with birds, javelinas
(wild pigs), an occasional coyote and a bobcat (so my
neighbor insists). We are empty nesters as my twin
girls, who were 5 when we moved here, are now
18 and are freshmen at the ASU Barrett Honors College.
My wife and I are deeply involved with Barrett Parents Organization of which my wife is the newly
elected President so we get down there pretty often.
Such is life in Scottsdale after Natick and Polaroid.

Ethelyn Mackenzie writes...My life after Polaroid
has been very busy. When I retired in 1988 I was
only 55 and felt I had to go back to work. I began
working for a bank counting money. I would count
between 1/4 to 1/2 million dollars daily. That lasted 5
years. I then went part time for 9 years sending out
monthly statements. Now I am just enjoying myself at
several Senior Centers playing cribbage, whist, and
canasta. I also teach Mah Jongg 1 day and play 1
day. I also volunteer on the desk answering the
phone. I still travel and really enjoy the luncheons
and seeing all my coworkers.
Len Magerman writes...In '96 during the Early Retirement programs and the digital camera project I
heard from a friend living in Scottsdale, AZ who invited us to come for a vacation. So standing in a
snowstorm in Feb. shoveling the driveway over and
over it wasn't too hard to make a decision to take a
trip here.
Of course in the back of our minds was the idea of
buying a home out West so when we got here we
looked at houses. Turns out, we so liked the styles
and prices and the thought of living here that we

work satisfaction as described in Dr. Land’s 1st Aim
and 2nd Aim Principles. The greatest problem was
requiring supervisors and managers to give up some
control of people and decision making without giving
up responsibility. Few knew how to do that well.
An interview with Manny
E Richard Rosenblatt
I first met Manny Elkind in 1986,
when I enrolled in his seminar
titled "Left Brain-Right Brain."
His teaching had a great impact
on the quality of my relationships with many people.
What he was able to accomplish inside and outside
of Polaroid is remarkable and he continues to share
what he has learned with many from the academic
and industrial world. Manny retired in 1988 to start
his own company, Mindtech, Inc., continuing the
work he was doing his last 8 years in Polaroid, teaching about left brain-right brain and developing ways
of discovering personal values and using them to
solve problems, improve relationships and make
business decisions. He’s been on the faculty of the
Senior Executive Program of the Columbia Business
School for 20 years. More than 50,000 people from
business and non-profit organizations have attended
his programs.
In 1963 he was a general supervisor in 4 x 5 working
for Warren Norquist. Manny credits Warren with being an outstanding mentor, teaching him about the
importance of anticipating events and people's responses, continuously evolving options and staying
at the leading edge.
When Manny joined the company in 1959, there
were just over 1000 employees. In the few years following 1965, the company grew from 3000 to over
7000 employees. Manny believes that this huge influx of people overwhelmed the culture of the company.
Manny became administrative manager of the Polarizer Division in 1967 and a department manager in
the negative manufacturing startup in New Bedford in
1969 working for Mac Booth. The introduction of inter
-cultural workshops and organizational development
facilitators contributed to the success. Manny became a senior manager in the Program Office in
1971, working for Hugh MacKenzie and Gerry Sudbey on the SX-70 camera and the Sesame Program
instant movie film camera. His final assignment was
Senior Manager of Experimental Projects. He worked
on the "AIM Project,” the beginning transition of camera assembly from long assembly lines to individual
stations integrating multiple assemblies. Each operator became more responsible and more in control of
their quantity and quality. He also developed the
seminar on “Left Brain-Right Brain.” It was so successful that about 5000 people from outside Polaroid
paid to attend the course and the teaching site was
moved from the Mansion in Norwood to Bentley College. Over 5000 employees at Polaroid plus many
spouses and relatives attended.
He describes loving his work so much that he'll continue doing it until he can't stand anymore, and then
he'll do it from a wheelchair, then from a bed, and
after he dies he'll still come back and whisper in people's ears.
Manny was born in Far Rockaway, near the outskirts
of New York City. He graduated from Columbia University with a BA and MS from the Business School.
He's been married to his wife, Toby, for 46 years and
they have three children.
Manny's first job after college in 1955 was with Continental Can as a production supervisor where he discovered his interest in personal development and
managing creative change. He created experiments
with the production operators, allowing them to set
their own goals and make appropriate changes in the
manufacturing process and supporting logistics. He
was amazed to see them repeatedly beat their goals.
It made him realize how worthwhile it was to get people involved in decision-making that affects them personally.
In closing, I asked Manny for his thoughts on the reasons for the demise of Polaroid. His response.. Lack
of interest and skill in leveraging the technologies we
were good at into businesses peripheral to or different than photography; underestimating the impact of
competition from digital photography and other
audiovisual products; lack of visionary leadership that
could move quickly and the associated loss of entrepreneurial spirit.
After spending two years in the U.S. Navy, he joined
Polaroid in 1959 as the manufacturing lab supervisor
in "Project 60", the development group for Pack Film.
Project 60 also had the challenge of creating a work
environment that balanced productivity, creativity and
