CARNAVAL AT THE
IDAExpo 2016 Keynote Speaker
Captain D. Mike Abrashoff
Former Commander of the USS Benfold, and author of It’s Your Ship
Mike Abrashoff is at the center of one of the most remarkable
modern day stories of organizational transformation. At the age of
36, the Navy selected Mike to become Commander of USS Benfold.
At the time he was the most junior commanding officer in the Pacific
Fleet – on a ship that was plagued by low morale, high turnover
and abysmal performance evaluations. Few thought
that the ship could improve - yet 12 months later the
ship was ranked #1 in performance – using the same
crew. People were amazed and the lesson was clear
– leadership matters and culture is everything.
You won’t want to miss this empowering message!

Session at the IDA Booth #637.

LAS VEGAS
Education Unlike Any Other Expo
Registered attendees of the 2016 IDAExpo in Las Vegas will gain valuable insights into all aspects of running a door
company in today’s challenging business climate. The program will provide information most applicable to today’s
challenges and opportunities.
We’ll also have some fun!
Headlining the full-day of seminars on Wednesday,
April 27, is Patti Wood, considered the nation’s leading authority on body language. Her session titled: The
Secret Signals of Selling and Body Language Insights to
Rock Your Business will amaze you with her insights, while
keeping you laughing throughout the presentation.
Patti has shared her energy, humor and savvy with
Fortune 500 companies and association audiences
for 25 years. She is called “The gold standard of body
language experts” by the Washington Post and credited
in the New York Times with bringing the topic into the
national consciousness.
As a communication expert she trains,
coaches and consults with law enforcement, the media and corporate
clients. A former University Instructor in
Communication, she is the author of
Success Signals-Understanding Body
Language, Easy Speaking-Presentation Skills and The Conflict Cure. She
speaks on PBS, BBC, CNN, FOX News,
E! Entertainment and VH1, is quoted
in many self help books, and appears
regularly in hundreds of newspapers
and magazines including: Us Weekly, Psychology Today, People, The
Miami Herald, Reuters,UPI, Ladies
Home Journal, ESPN, Entertainment Weekly, Cosmopolitan, In
Touch, The New York Times, The
Wall Street Journal, Red Book
and hundreds more. She has
been the national spokesperson
for; Wrigley’s Spearmint Gum,
Benadryl, and Vaseline Intensive
Care Lotion.
The education continues
on Thursday, April 28,
with a second full day of
industry seminars. This
information-packed day
will also include insights by
a man who has a unique
perspective on business
and industry. Tom Ryan has
appeared twice on the Late
Show with David Letterman,
and has 20 years of
stand-up comedy
under his belt. But,
it’s his ability to
customize clean,
original material that
makes him a unique
and natural fit for
the IDAExpo. Tom
says, “People like hearing about their organization from
an outside perspective. And as it turns out, the world of
business is a lot funnier than people think.”
One of his best known routines centers on the profitability of two well known products, Morton Salt and Arm &
Hammer Baking Soda.
“I’ve always wondered how the Morton Salt Company
makes any money. How long does it take you folks to go
through one of those big blue drums of Morton salt? Five
years? What did you pay for it — a quarter?” As for baking
soda, Ryan points out that, in one of the most brilliant marketing strategies of all time, the company has convinced
its customers to pour their product down the drain!
Tom Ryan currently is researching the door and access
systems industry. This is your one-time chance to learn
how he views the world you live in!

IDEA Two-Day Technical Schools
Wednesday and Thursday, April 27-28, 2016
After a successful launch in 2013 of a two-day school for experienced technicians, IDEA is once again offering them for the 2016
IDAExpo, running two concurrent schools on Wednesday and Thursday, April 27-28, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The two-day Rolling Steel/Rolling Steel Fire Door course will be presented along with a two-day school on Commercial
Sectional Doors, run at the same time.
The classes are intended for experienced technicians and are not hands-on training courses.
Although attendees are not required to be enrolled in IDEA certification programs, the schools are ideal as pre-examination
classes, and testing for related IDEA certification designations will be offered at the conclusion of the second day.
The exams offered for attendees who wish to earn certification at the conclusion of their selected school, are: Commercial Sectional
Door Systems Technician Certification, Commercial Rolling Door Systems Technician Certification and Rolling Steel Fire
Door Technician Certification.
Important Notes:
•To register for either of the twoday schools, use the IDAExpo
Registration Form, whether or
not you intend to sit for one or
more certification exams at the
conclusion of the school.
•To attend either of the schools
and also sit for one or more
certification exams, you must
apply for the certification
program(s) through IDEA. Visit
www.dooreducation.com, and
apply normally. Indicate on the
IDEA Certification application
form that you intend to take your
exam at the “Two Day School.”
•Individuals will be permitted to
take only the exam related to
their chosen school. IDEA staff
will notify all school attendees of
the time and location of postExposition testing availability.
•Fully registered Expo attendees
may attend all or any portion of
either two-day school, as with any
other educational programming
taking place at the event.
However, testing is not available
to anyone who has not applied
for the certification examination in
advance of testing.
•Individuals will be permitted to
apply for certification on-site,
but full payment is required
before being allowed to sit for an
examination.

#4) UL 325 - Demystifying a
Common Denominator in
Our Industry
Presenter: Stephen R. Kuscsik, Chief
Engineer, Underwriters Laboratories
Safety is key to the success of your
company and our industry. If it is not
your top concern, it probably should
be. UL 325 has been around since
the 1970’s, and has played a big part
in establishing safety requirements
for automatic door operators, gate
operators and related products. Many
people simply look for a certification
mark on a product and don’t go any
further to understand what is behind
that mark. In this seminar, you will
find out what UL 325 really is, how it is
developed, and what manufacturers
go through to achieve compliance
with UL 325. It will also cover recent
changes, and how UL 325 keeps
current as product technology
advances. Whether you are a dealer,
distributor, installer, service person,
sales person, or manufacturer - you
will no longer take for granted that a
product has a certification mark. It will
leave you more informed, better able
to serve your customers, and even
connected to influencing the future of
safety for this industry.
1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

#9) Fenestration - More than the
Definition Conveys
Presenter: David Stammen, Principal
Engineer, and Jim Blakely, Senior Sales
Executive, Underwriters Laboratories
Fenestration is defined by Webster
as “the arrangement, proportioning,
and design of windows and doors
in a building”, but we all know there
is much more involved than this
definition describes. Factors such as
product design, types of products
for the application, performance
for the needed job, ensuring proper
performance, integration of the
fenestration product within the wall
system, and so much more plays a
part in what manufacturers build,
and more importantly, what to ask
and look for when purchasing and
installing these products. In this
seminar, you will be exposed to all
of these topics, and a few more,
that will leave you better informed
about the Fenestration market, and
performance of these products
relative to Building Codes and
State specific requirements. You
will also gain greater insight into the
testing and regulatory side of the
Fenestration Industry, allowing you
to provide further knowledge to the
customers and industry you serve.
#10) How to Handle an OSHA
Inspection
Presenter: Brian Schoolman, Safran
Law Offices
Safety is a critical
issue for dealers,

a plaintiff attempts to collect damages
as a result of an accident, alleging that
a product was improperly installed and
did not meet safety standards.

It happens to everybody. In the
chaos of running a business, an

YOU HAVE THE POWER TO
CHANGE A LIFE.
“ Thank you IDA for giving me this
opportunity, and this support to
continue my studies, to follow me over
as a person with value and knowledge.”
– Mónica Valeria Garcia
If you were present for the IDAExpo Opening Session in Indianapolis,
you were no doubt impressed with the moving comments of
Valeria Garcia, a recipient of a scholarship from the IDA Scholarship
Foundation. Included with her many touching words, she stated
how the scholarship provided her the opportunity to broaden her
education and had actually changed her life.
Since the first scholarships were awarded in 2001, a total of $946,650
has been awarded to 253 students. These students are all family
members of IDA dealer and IDA Industry member companies. Since
2001, those who have contributed to the Foundation have literally
changed the lives of 253 individuals!
Yes, you do have the power to change a life by making a tax
deductible contribution to the IDA Scholarship Foundation. Every
dollar helps and is deeply appreciated.
Beginning July 2, 2015, the Foundation has introduced a special
program – Change a Life. The program will acknowledge significant
donors starting at the $2,500 giving level by allowing the donor to
have a scholarship acknowledged in an individual’s or company name.
An individual who contributes $2,500 can have this honor for 1 year.
A $5,000 donation allows the honor for 3 years, $10,000 5 years, and
a $25,000 donation for 15 years.
I encourage all members to support the IDA Scholarship Foundation,
and for those who can, participate at the Change a Life giving level.
