FRIENDS FOREVER AND SILVER SPOKES
The next meeting of the Silver Spokes and Friends Forever will be on Thursday, January 29, 2015. The
program will feature Dr. Dan Good, Superintendent of Columbus City Schools as our speaker. The meeting will
begin promptly at 11:30 a.m., with lunch being served at noon. PLEASE remember to wear your name tags to
facilitate introductions (and jog some memories). This meeting is open to the public. Guests are WELCOMED
and ENCOURAGED. Cost for lunch is $13.00. To make reservations, call Nancy Bahorek, (614)-268-5160; or
Phyllis Wolf, (740)-549-4179 before Wednesday, January 21.
MEMORY MOMENTS
Upon our 75th year, let us remember:
Our founders crafted a statement of community which ends with this statement:
It is Our Community and it is entitled to Our Support.
1940-1950 found the women of CWC feeding and giving to the poor, supporting more activities at the Clinton
School, participating in a Victory Book and Magazine Campaign that gave over 1300 books to the Clintonville
Branch Library, and continuing to lead the Clean Up Clintonville campaign by involving the children of the
community in planting trees and bulbs on W. North Broadway. Early on these trees were planted in memory of
deceased Club members; after the war, trees were planted for 65 Clintonville servicemen killed in WWII, one of
whom was the brother of Flo Breunig, a long-time staff member at the Club. Support for the Red Cross and the
USO as well as the sale of U.S. Bonds continued through the 40s. All these efforts were accomplished while
holding meetings in homes and hosting events and teas at hotels, Beechwold Banquet Hall, and Brookside
Country Club. Likewise, more Interest Groups were created during this period.
In 1942, realizing the need for a Community Center in Clintonville, a committee formulated a recommendation
that was presented to the Clintonville Community Council in which the Club participated. This
committee reported that a careful survey of community needs had been made. The opinion of the committee
was that a community center, an assembly hall, auditorium or club house (with seating capacity of 500),
adequate stage, and perhaps a historical museum room for Clintonville history would serve the citizens of the
community and would add to the cultural, historical, social and economic life, serving all age groups. By 1950,
many locations had been investigated, both vacant lots and standing buildings. Since the City classified an
assembly hall as a business, suitable property was in the very high-price class. Lack of adequate parking around
already existing locations was another restriction affecting the finding of a suitable location. The committee
stated that it had no progress to report in this search.

December is one of my favorite months. I love the smell of pine and of
Christmas cookies baking. Sparkly lights and snow please me as well.
BUT…….January is also one of my favorite months. I love the thought
of a brand new year.
Thoughts for these months:
December:
You can’t have everything. Where would you put it?
Steven Wright
January:
Cheers to a new year and another chance to get it right.
Oprah Winfrey
Congratulations!
Check out our Judy Skinner in Columbus CEO , December 2014,
page 74. Once again she is honored for her volunteer work. She is a wonderful example for all of us.
CWC Catering placed No. 1 on The Knot for wedding receptions. Well done to Kristen, Auggie, and crew!
Trivia Question:
In 1967, the first color television image was broadcast from the
WBNS-TV studio. Who was featured in the image?
Have a wonderful Christmas and may 2015 be the best year ever!

In the context of social
invitations, RSVP is a request
for a response from the invited
person or persons; it is an
initialism derived from the
French phrase répondez s'il
vous plaît, meaning please
respond.
According to Emily Post:
The high society of England
adopted French etiquette in the
late 18th century, and the
writings of Emily Post aimed to
offer a standard no more
stringent than that
tradition. Late 20th century
editions building on her early
work in the 1920s say, e.g., that
anyone receiving an invitation
with an R.S.V.P. on it is obliged
to reply…, and some recent
editions describe breaching this
standard as inexcusably
rude. Emily Post advises that
anyone receiving an invitation
with an RSVP on it must reply
promptly and should reply
within a day or two of receiving
the invitation.
