T
hus far, 2015 has proved to be a very difficult year for racing with the
persistent decline in attendance and turnover on the totalisator. The turnover
for this year is expected to be the second lowest since the privatisation of
the totalisator agreements. Sad to say, the steepest decline has been our
local Malaysian races but this has been augmented by off-course betting
from Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, South Africa and Australia.
The thoroughbreds’ woes have been exacerbated by the depreciation of our
Malaysian currency whose ripple effect will affect everything relating to the
horse as they are all imported ranging from horse gear, equipment, horse feed,
horse supplements, drugs and medication. Our problems are compounded
by the Equine Influenza (EI) which literally stopped racing on its tracks for
approximately six weeks.
The MRA racing calendar was further disrupted by events beyond our
control when races had to be cancelled due to the prolonged haze. The
announcement by Singapore Turf Club to discontinue the Singapore Airlines
International Cup and Krisflyer Sprint Trophy have left a void in our circuit
as these two races had added colour and glamour to the Sport of Kings over
a decade in our region. All these happenings have come at the time of great
turbulence.
Our biggest problem continues to be the illegal bookmakers who are
bleeding us without putting a cent into our thoroughbred industry thereby
causing enormous losses to the turf clubs. The enforcement agencies must
tackle this scourge and come down hard on the illegals, otherwise we will be
at the mercy of organised crime. As no settlement is forthcoming on our claims
against Pan Malaysian Pools, the civil suit is set down for trial in the High
Court in Kuala Lumpur and the outcome to our claims for our just dues will
not be known until all appeals are finally exhausted.
In what must be racing’s Annus Horribilis, the only
cheerful event must be the International Horse Show
held in conjunction with the national MYFEST2015
celebrations which brought equestrian participants
from all over the world who are members of the
International Group for Equestrian Qualifications
(IGEQ) for the successful four-day festival in
November in Batu Gantong. We thank the Ministry
of Finance and Lembaga Totalisator Malaysia for
co-sponsoring and support for this Horse Show.
We have once again reached the time of the year
when all Ordinary Members can look forward to
our grand finale on December 25, 2015, for the
annual dinner and lucky draw in conjunction
with the running of the Yang Di-Pertua Negeri
Gold Cup race on the last Sunday of 2015.
The Club extends season’s greetings and best wishes to each and every
one for a happy and a prosperous 2016 and may the new year bring better
tidings to the racing fraternity.

Cup of Lightweights
L
ightweights have a superb record in the Yang
Di-Pertua Negeri Gold Cup in recent years, even
after the condition of the race was changed from a
handicap to a set-weight event in 2009.
Only twice in the last 15 years have the winner of the
Gold Cup carried more than 51.5kg. Singapore-trained Light
Of Success (Military Plume - Scentessa by Scenic), trained by
Len Treloar, was successful in 2005 with 55kg. In 2010, when
the Gold Cup was staged at Sungei Besi due to the relaying
of the track in Penang, another Singapore runner, the Steven
Burridge-trained Risky Business (Danehill Dancer - Sky Watch
by Star Watch), triumphed with 56.5kg.
After 28 years, Penang Turf Club decided in 2013 to
change the distance of the Gold Cup from 2,200m to 2,000m
— a distance more in line with some of the biggest races in
the world like the Dubai World Cup, Hong Kong Cup and
across the causeway, the Singapore Airlines International
Cup. At the same time, cross-border racing was discontinued
due to the reduction in prizemoney.
And lightweights continued to be the main force, with
Monsili (Danehill - Mountcat by Mountain Cat) winning in 2013
with just 50kg on his back and Yastrzemski (Keeper - Passive
Rose by Zabeel) coming up tops with 50.5kg last year.
The Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Gold Cup was first run as the
Penang Gold Cup in 1921 when Haud won over “one mile
and distance” at the old racecourse in Jalan MacAlister.
Due to some inexplicable reasons, it was not until 1934
that the Gold Cup was run again, when Star Player was
successful. Knight’s Eye became the first horse to win the race
twice, in 1937 and 1938.

In 1939, the Penang Turf Club moved to its new “home”
in Batu Gantong and that year’s Gold Cup was won by Royal
Worlington over 11 furlongs (about 2,212m) after which racing
was halted because of World War II.
The Gold Cup series resumed in 1948 when Predominance
became the first post-war winner. The distance was 10
furlongs (about 2,011m) as was the 1969 Gold Cup won by
Madasari.
From 1950 to 1952, the distance was reverted to 11
furlongs. The 1952 winner Col. Whatnot repeated his success
the following year when the distance was changed yet again
to 10 furlongs. The Gold Cup was run over that distance, and
later over 2,000m when racing went metric, until 1984.
Col. Whatnot’s second consecutive win in 1953 created
history, for it was the first time a local jockey had won the
Gold Cup. That honour went to Abdul Mawi, who two years
later repeated the success on Zabaglione. Abdul Mawi rode
at a time when the majority of the riders were expatriates,
and that he was able to hold his own against the best when
winning two Penang Gold Cups spoke volumes of his riding
prowess.

Monsili defeats the Malaysian bred Beautiful Choice to win in 2013
Three Rings (The Phoenix - Vanity Fair by Fairway) won
his first Penang Gold Cup in 1954 and repeated the feat two
years later. It signaled the start of the “Doc Rodgers era”. The
late veterinary surgeon-turned-trainer also won the Gold
Cup in successive years with Couag (Cagire - Uags by Buen
Ojo) in 1958, Prince Of Lalita (Prince Chavalier - Lalita by Owen
Tudor) in 1959 and Automation (Pink Flower - Perio by Historic)
in 1960, making it five wins in the space of seven years.
Three Rings also won the Singapore Gold Cup thrice in
1954, 1956 and 1957.
Moonbeam, the 1968 Singapore Gold Cup winner, won
the Penang version the following year. There have been
numerous other Singapore Gold Cup winners who also won
in Penang.
However, Ouzo (Oregon - Halloween by War Hawk II),
arguably one of the best horses ever seen on our shores,
never won the Singapore Gold Cup but captured the Gold
Cup in Penang in 1997, prior to the cross-border ban on the
movement of horses. Ouzo went on to win the inaugural
running of the Singapore Airlines International Cup in 2000.
But by far the most successful trainer in the Gold Cup
series is Dato Seri Teh Choon Beng. Crowned champion
trainer of the Malaysia and Singapore circuit 13 times, Teh
won the classic seven times, a record which still stands
despite Teh having retired from training in December 1995.
Teh first made his mark in the Gold Cup in 1974 with
Shadowfax (Crepello - Martial Air) and he followed up in the
next season with Mallane (Pall Mall - Aunt Florrie by Delirium).
After the race was renamed Yang Di-Pertua
Negeri Gold Cup in 1976, Teh saddled five
more winners, the first being Aylmer Road
(Nashua - Take A Stand by Amerigo) in 1978.
History was created in 1980 when the Tehtrained Scaramouche II (Selhurst - On Par by Parma) became
not only the first three-year-old to win the Gold Cup, but also
the first of his age to win any classic in the local circuit.
Five years later in 1985, Teh won again with Truth (Brigand
- Onserene by Oncidium) who was ridden by apprentice
Hint galloping to victory in 2012
Ismadi Ismail. That year, the distance of the Gold Cup was
changed to 2,200m and remained at that for the next 28 years.
A year earlier, Oo Khuang Liang had become the first
apprentice to win the Gold Cup astride St Gallen (Decies Aminona by Oakville).
Amazingly, St Gallen won the Gold Cup a second time
after a lapse of four years, in 1988, when ridden by another
apprentice Danny Chee. Oo, Ismail and Chee are the only
apprentices to have won the race.
Maree Lyndon made history in 1987 when she became the
first female jockey to win the Gold Cup on the Teh-trained
Turn Around (Sir Tristram - Cypon by Oncidium). Another Teh’s
stable jockey, Kim Clapperton, emulated the feat in 1993 on
Jingle Bell V (Nassipour - Lady In Waiting by Trictrac) and two
years later scored again on Courtline Jester (Caerleon - Bottom
Line).
In 1994, the Club achieved a “first” when Piaget, the
French manufacturer of magnificent timepieces, presented a
gift horse to the winning owners of the Gold Cup.

Risky Business winning the Gold Cup in 2010 when it was run in Kuala Lumpur
du Cheval (UNIC). Jean approached the Chairman of Piaget
International, Yves G Piaget, after they learned about the
Club’s 130th anniversary celebrations from then Committee
Member (Dato) Ong Eng Khuan, when he attended the Goffs
France yearling sales at Saint-Cloud, Paris, in April that year.
The race with the added incentive was won by Noble
Spirits (Light Spirits – Stylish by Noble Bijou), trained by Mohd
Yusof. Noble Spirits’ win in the Gold Cup, in part, earned him
the Pan Malaysian Pools Horse of the Year title.
(The gift horse, named Imperial Gold II (Funambule - Secret
Foly by Procida), went on to win six races including the Bukit
Timah Trophy, a feature race for Class 2 horses over 1,850m.
He also finished third in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup and
Singapore Derby in 1996 but his promising career was cut
short by an injury sustained in the Yang Di-Pertua Negeri
Gold Cup the same year when he pulled up lame.)
Following that, five other horses who won the Gold
Cup have gone on to win the Horse of the Year title as well:
Confidence V (Serheed - Cherie Avion by Captain’s Wings)
in 1996, Centroview (Centro - Pineview Lass by Tom’s Shu)
in 1999, Ballistic (Legend Wind - Island Fun by Pago Lago) in
2000, Confluence in 2001 and Tears To Diamonds in 2011. A
testimony that this end-of-season classic never fails to attract
the best horses in the circuit.
In 1999, Malaysia and Singapore went separate ways
and the Gold Cup was contested exclusively by Malaysian
horses until 2005. It was during this period that we saw
the emergence of arguably the best mare to grace our turf:
Confluence (Paris Opera - Tristrams Jewel by Sir Tristram).
The New Zealand mare won the Gold Cup in 2001 and
went on to win the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor (then run over
1,600m), the Coronation Cup twice, Selangor Gold Cup (then
2,000m) and Sprint Trophy in the following two years.
In 2004, Confluence earned an invite to contest in the

Singapore Airlines International Cup but unfortunately
broke down during the race, bringing her 12-win career to a
premature end.
After the resumption of cross-border racing in 2005, four
horses from across the causeway have emerged triumphant in
the Gold Cup with Light Of Success (Military Plume - Scentessa
by Scenic) taking honours that year.
The following year, it was the Laurie Laxon-trained
Expunge (Gilded Time - Prime Again by Marooned) denied Light
Of Success.
Trainer Steven Burridge was successful with Risky
Business in 2010 and Hint (Reset - Suggestive by Al Hareb)
easily accounted for his Malaysian rivals.
Raul (Hideyoshi - Whisper To Me by Beau Sovereign) created
history by becoming the oldest horse to win the Gold Cup at
the ripe old age of ten. The former Singapore galloper also
joined an elite band of horses to have won both the Singapore
Gold Cup and the Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Gold Cup, having
won the Singapore showpiece in 2004.
For Raul’s trainer Evert van Breukelen, it was an
unforgettable moment in his career as he finally achieved
what his late father Eddie had achieved three times, with
Champion in 1964, Moonbeam in 1969 and Siapa Rajah in 1972.
The 2009 winner Raul is the oldest horse to win the Gold Cup

Awards For Trainer And Jockey
Top performers at Sprint Trophy meeting receive cash and trophies
T
o encourage and reward competitive racing among
trainers and jockey, Penang Turf Club introduced
the Trainer and Jockey Challenge Championship
Awards during the Woodside Park Stud Sprint
Trophy Meeting on July 25 and 26, 2015.
Points were awarded to the trainers and jockeys who
finished first, second and third in all the races held during the
two days. The points awarded were 12 for first, five for second
and three for third.
Penang trainers Bonny Ng and Jerome Tan did the home
contingent proud by finishing first and second with 41 and
39 points respectively, followed by Prakhash Pereira with 30
points.
Ng and Tan saddled two winners each at the meeting. Ng
was successful with Pre Dawn in the Swettenham Stud Trophy
(Class 4 - 1,300m) and Yousingwedance in the Dr Lim Ah Soo
Memorial Trophy (Class 5 - 1,700m).
Tan saddled Zenidekka to win the Tattersalls Trophy (Class
4 - 1,300m) and Reel Schmick in a Class 5 - 1,100m sprint. Ng
also had a second and three third placings while Tan had
three second finishes.
Ng walked away with RM21,000 cash and a trophy while
Tan was awarded RM6,000. Pereira won RM3,000.
Jose De Souza was the top rider at the meeting with 51
points, ahead of Martin Wepner on 42 and apprentice Khairil
Zulkiflee on 23.
De Souza won the biggest prize of the meeting astride
Good Baby in the RM550,000 Woodside Park Stud Sprint
Trophy (1,400m), besides the Tattersalls Trophy on Zenidekka.
In terms of the number of
winners, Wepner topped the list
with three: Ten Sense Win in the
Erinvale Thoroughbreds Trophy
(Enrich Stakes A - 1,300m), Try The
Chance in the Royal Turf Club of
Thailand Trophy (Class 5 - 1,400m)
and Miracle Pray in a Class 4 1,700m handicap.
But De Souza also had three

Good Baby scores runaway win in
Woodside Park Stud Sprint Trophy
N
ot since Captain Obvious’s 12-length win in 2010 has
a horse been so dominant in the Sprint Trophy as
did Good Baby (Hussonet - Secret Haze by Danehill) in
the 1,400m classic in Penang on July 26, 2015.
For Good Baby, it was his second success in the country’s
premier sprint, which this year was sponsored by Woodside
Park Stud and offered RM550,000 in prizemoney. The
Australian gelding had won the event in 2013 and was third
in both 2012 and last year.
With Jose De Souza in the saddle, Good Baby settled just
behind the pace and was third passing the 800m behind the
pacemaker Intention. The leader came under pressure at the
home bend and Balotelli headed the front momentarily but
was quickly joined by Good Baby and Rush (Charge Forward Flidais by Timber Country) on his outside.
Balotelli soon fizzled out as Good Baby hit the front with
Rush in pursuit. These two cleared away from the rest but with
every stride, Good Baby went further and further ahead. At the

line, he was eight lengths clear of Rush. Third was Carbon Copy
(Volksraad - Mardi Gras by Kaapstad).
Good Baby’s success continued a remarkable nine-month
period for Penang based trainer Ooi Chin Chin who only
made his debut last year.
Ooi landed his first big win in the Coronation Cup in
November last year with Good Baby. Ooi then saddled Balotelli
to victory in the Tunku Gold Cup (1,200m) in February and
the Perak Gold Vase (1,100m straight) in July this year.

For Good Baby, it was his sixth big
win, having captured the Malaysian
Magic Millions Classic in 2011, the
Sultan Gold Vase in 2012, the Sprint
Trophy and Selangor Gold Cup in 2013
under trainer Kevin Coetzee.
With the Sprint Trophy success, Good
Baby brought his record to 13 wins from
45 starts, amassing more than RM2.5
million in prizemoney.

bounced back to form after a
run of eight unplaced starts to capture
the RM80,000 Erinvale Thoroughbreds
Trophy in Penang on July 26, 2015 to
become the most successful American
bred in Malaysia in recent years.
The entire was among a big batch of
American breds imported by Hudson
Stable three years ago and since he
began racing in mid-2013, has chalked
up six wins in 23 starts.
Ten Sense Win was purchased for just
US$17,000 as a yearling and has earned
more than RM220,000 in prizemoney.

win Dr Lim Ah Soo Memorial Trophy
Yousingwedance (Danasinga - Western Invasion by Best
Western) brought smiles and joy to his connections
in the middle of last year when he scored twice in
the space of three starts.
The New Zealand gelding then went through
a drought for almost a year until he found his
rhythm again in the RM35,000 Dr Lim Ah Soo
Memorial Trophy in Penang on July 25, 2015.
With Jai Shankar in the saddle, the fouryear-old was always travelling well just behind
the pace before racing past the pacemaker
Victory March (Viking Ruler - Moire by Crested
Wave) to win drawing away by two and a
half lengths. Third was Rock D’Boat (Dance
Floor - Aquatainia by Touching Wood).
Yousingwedance was sold for NZ$20,000
as a yearling but when presented at the
Ready To Run sale a few months later, he
was knocked down to a Malaysian buyer
for just NZ$7,000. But with already three
wins under his belt, it is turning out to be
a real bargain.

As soon as they bought over Mr
Paulandit (Snippetson - Relativity by
Geiger Counter) in March of this year,
owners Napshot Stable immediately
applied for a change of name for the
gelding from Tomorrows Dreams.
But success with their new
purchase came only after a change of
trainer to Daniel Murphy in mid-July,
just days prior to Mr Paulandit running
in the RM55,000 Ascot Farm Trophy in
Penang on July 26, 2015.
The change brought instant success
as the Australian gelding battled to
victory in the Cosmo C set-weight
event over 1,200m run in heavy going.
Soul Commander (Commands -
Bartolomeo by Strategic) set the pace
from the start but was caught close to
home. Mr Paulandit, ridden by Nizam
Jabah, won by three-quarter of a length
and rank-outsider Baby Polo (Danske Film by Fuji Kiseki) made it a thrilling
finish and was a neck further back in
third place.
Mr Paulandit won just once in 27
months in Singapore before moving
to Malaysia where he picked up three
wins before Napshot Stable purchased
him.

enang Turf Club’s programme
of purchasing yearling to boost
the Club’s population scored
a big hit when Pre Dawn (Due Sasso Bibiani by Danish Harmony) captured
the RM51,000 Swettenham Stud Trophy
in Penang on July 26, 2015.
Bought by the Club for A$40,000 at
the sales, the Australian gelding has
been very consistent since breaking
through for his maiden win in
December last year.
Trained then by Dr Tan Swee Hock,
Pre Dawn went on to complete a hattrick
and he was placed in all his four starts
thereafter before finding success again
in the Swettenham Stud Trophy, this
time he was under the charge of trainer
Bonny Ng.
Ng’s stable apprentice Khairil
Zulkiflee took the ride and the pair
set the pace in the Class 4 - 1,300m
handicap.
They
were
headed
momentarily at the home bend but
proved too classy for the rest of the
field, winning by four and a quarter
lengths.
Second was Equally Optimistic (Show
A Heart - Attend by Xaar) who finished
just ahead of Happy Choice (Danroad Ready This Time by More Than Ready).

rivals, disputing the early lead, then hit
the front round the home bend to win
by two and a quarter lengths.
More Than Words (Hard Spun - Glow
Baby by Rancho Ruler) finished second,
just ahead of Mogan’s Pet (Towkay Quadriga by Zabeel).
Zenidekka was a pretty useful sort
in the United States where she won
as a juvenile and also at three years
at Hollywood Park but she was a
disappointment in Singapore where she
managed just one win.

A
fter finishing down the field
in three starts, Cutting Torch
(O’Lonhro - Lianza by Alzao)
surprised quite a few people when
he made all the running to win the
RM35,000 Perth Racing Trophy in
Penang on July 25, 2015.
The Class 5 - 1,400m handicap
was contested by a capacity field of
16 horses but the Australian gelding,
partnered by apprentice Lim Aun Kean,
was able to quickly get into the lead. He
enjoyed a clear advantage going into
the straight but in the home stretch,
Excellent Goal (Black Minnaloushe - Miss
Sacha by Kaapstad) made a gallant bid.
But the Cutting Torch refused to
surrender and held Excellent Goal at bay
to win by a neck. Zenidin (Bernardini Our Sharapova by Fasliyev) was third.
Cutting Torch cost a modest A$4,000
as a yearling and could turn out to be a
bargain buy. While his sire is a Group
2 winner, his dam was a useful sort on
the track with five wins up to 1400m
and was stakes-placed once.

t was the end of a long lane, more than two years
in the making, for Try The Chance (Majestic Missile Danetime Out by Danetime) when he triumphed in the
RM35,000 Royal Turf Club of Thailand Trophy in Penang
on July 25, 2015.
The gelding had shown a lot of promise in his native
England where he won three of five starts at two and three.
But he was a huge disappointment in Singapore where he
finished in the tailend in three outings. He was quickly sold
and despatched to trainer Dr Tan Swee Hock in Penang.
Try The Chance was again a let-down in Malaysia,
managing just three placings in 23 starts before finally finding
the mark in the Royal Turf Club of Thailand Trophy, a Class
5 - 1,400m handicap.
The seven-yearold was quickly
in the lead with
Martin
Wepner
partnering
him
for the first time.
The pair was never
in danger of being caught, coasting home by four and a
quarter lengths ahead of Lightning Rod (Captain Rio - Poeiti by
Amazing Dancer). Third was Track Mac (Pacific Prince - Little
Girl by Prince Of Praise).
The Royal Turf Club of Thailand Trophy turned out to be
the final trophy success for Dr Tan Swee Hock who retired
the following month.

Get The Lotski justifies favourite tag to
win Doncaster Bloodstock Sales Trophy
Having been placed in three consecutive races from seven
starts earlier on, Get The Lotski (Bernardini - Seismic Lady by
Distant View) was backed down to very short odds in the
RM35,000 Doncaster Bloodstock Sales Trophy in Penang on
July 26, 2015.

In a race run in heavy going and with a capacity field of
16 runners, it was certainly a big vote of confidence from the
punters in the Open Maiden - 1,300m event.
But their hearts must have skipped a beat or two when
they saw the Australian gelding settling well back in the field
early on.
However, under the able guidance of
veteran jockey Yan Weng Kuan, Get The
Lotski gradually made his way through
the field rounding the home bend. At the
top of the straight, the gelding was within
striking distance and they went on to win
by two and a half lengths.
Second was Sacred Achiever (O’Reilly
- Lady Chanele by Citidancer) with Thunder
Wind (Thunder Gulch - Cash Flow by Gilded
Time) a further length away third.

Balotelli, who showed so much promise
with four wins last season, finally
realised his potential when he scored in
the Selangor Tunku Gold Cup (1,200m)
in February this year.
And despite taking a near fivemonth break after the win, Balotelli (My
Halo - Step We Gaily by Danske) was
still too good for his rivals when he
resumed racing in the RM200,000 Perak
Gold Vase over the 1,100m straight
course in Ipoh on July 12, 2015.
After settling well off the pace, the
New Zealand gelding swept to the
front coming to the course proper and
never looked back after that, winning
by two and a quarter lengths from his
stablemate Good Baby (Hussonet - Secret
Haze by Danehill), winner of the race in
2012. Third was Peaceful Warrior (Bel
Esprit - Let’s Begin by Umatilla).
It was the sixth win in 13 starts for
the New Zealand gelding who was
purchased by his owners for NZ$40,000
at the Ready To Run sale
For winning jockey Salee Saad,
it was his second victory in the Gold
Vase, having won it in 2009 on Sinar
Bintang.

CORNER
Mr. Apollo Ng, President of the Hong Kong Racehorse Owners Association and
his wife, Mary paid a visit to Penang Turf Club during their first visit to Penang.
Both of them were very keen to visit one of the oldest racing clubs in Malaysia
but commented that the on-course was a tad underwhelming as the race day was
cancelled due to an Equine Influenza Outbreak. However, they were still ushered
for a tour around the club facilities. A visit to the legendary retired trainer, Dato
Seri Teh Choon Beng’s residence was also arranged to meet the former trainer and
to view his racing collections. The couple had a short but enjoyable stay in Penang,
visiting the places of interest and savoring the local cuisine.
On 4th September 2015, we had the honour of welcoming
Mr. Michael Caveny, the Deputy Chairman of Racing
Victoria Ltd, Australia together with his wife Sue to
Penang. It was their first time visiting Penang after a long
flight from Ireland. They also visited the former trainer,
Dato Seri Teh Choon Beng at home, to appreciate his vast
collections of trophies and bronze sculptors. Both of them
enjoyed their time in Penang relishing the local delicacies
and the vibrant local culture. On the eve of their departure,
they were hosted by the club to a Peranakan dinner, and
they thoroughly enjoyed it.
A group of 5 Thai delegates, who are friends of General Boonlert from the Royal Turf
Club of Thailand arrived in Penang on 23rd September 2015. The purpose of their
trip was to attend a meeting to discuss matters on off-course betting with Penang
Turf Club. After the meeting, the group had lunch with Committee Members and
staff of Penang Turf Club at the Committee Dining Room. Before they departed to
the airport, they were driven to various tourist spots around the island.

Sha Tin-trained horses win both SIA Cup and KrisFlyer for third year
Dan Excel leads Military Attack home in the SIA Cup
Aerovelocity proves too speedy for the rest in the KrisFlyer
In recent years, Hong Kong horses have
been dominant at home against some of
the best horses in the world in the Hong
Kong international races. And now,
they are making Kranji their second
playground.
For the third consecutive year, Hong
Kong gallopers won both the S$3 million
Singapore Airlines International Cup
(SIA Cup) and the S$1 million KrisFlyer
International Sprint (KrisFlyer) at the
Singapore International Racing Festival
on May 17, 2015 and I had the privilege
of witnessing this milestone.
For trainer John Moore, it was
especially satisfying as he has now won
the SIA Cup thrice in a row, first with
Military Attack in 2013 and with Dan
Excel last year.
Dan Excel (Shamardal - Love Excelling
by Polish Precedent) came back this year
to win the 2,000m race a second time,
become the first horse to do so since it
was inaugurated in 2000.
Military Attack finished second on
this occasion while Longines Singapore
Gold Cup winner Quechua did best of
the local contingent by finishing third.

Aerovelocity (Pins - Exodus by Kaapstad)
gave a sterling performance to give
Hong Kong its fifth triumph (in 10
runnings) in the Krisflyer ahead of local
hope Emperor Max. Lucky Nine, who
won the 1,200m sprint in the last two
years, finished third this time.
Hong Kong first won the KrisFlyer
in 2009 with Sacred Kingdom and the
following year with Green Birdie.
N. B. On September 28, 2015, Singapore Turf
Club announced that it will no longer stage the
running of the Singapore Airlines International
Cup and KrisFlyer International Sprint.

48.25secs. in the listed 1,800m reciprocal
event hosted by the South Australian
Jockey Club.
This year, Amralah (Teofilo - Sharp
Mode by Diesis) outclassed the field
to win the A$100,000 event by three
lengths in a new race record time 1min.
47.86secs. which was just 500th of a
second outside the course record held
by Tingirana.
It was an imposing win by the Irish
horse who was having his third start in
Australia, after having won four times
and netted four placings in 11 starts
in the United Kingdom and was in
Australia to contest the big spring races
in Melbourne.

Stephen King, Amralah took up a handy
spot just behind the leaders down the
back straight and rounding the turn
maintained his position, off the rails
in fourth. Before the home straight, he
cruised up, three wide, to be level with
the pace and once they balanced up he
took over, driving clear with 200m to
run and in no danger whatsoever, for a
commanding win.
Back On Target (Barely A Moment Causette by Bluebird) was second, with
Pelicano (Court Of Jewels - Musk by
Kaapstad) another 2 3/4-lengths away
third.

Blazing Speed springs surprise in
Audemars Piguet QE II Cup
B
lazing Speed (Dylan Thomas - Leukippids by Sadler’s
Wells) caused a minor surprise when he captured the
HK$20 million Audemars Piguet QE II Cup (2,000m) at
Sha Tin on April 26, 2015 at odds of 15-1.
For former Hong Kong champion jockey Tony Cruz, it was
the end of a long search for one of the very few races that has
eluded him as a trainer. “I’ve been trying very hard to win
this race. I managed to do it a few times as a jockey but to do
it now as a trainer, I’m very happy about it.”
It was the biggest win for Irish jockey Neil Callan who was
enjoying big best season (2014/15) in Hong Kong.
Blazing Speed had landed the perfect spot one off the rails
from the gates and swung from the final bend to win by two
lengths ahead from a line of five horses, headed by Japan’s
Staphanos (Deep Impact - Kokoshnik by Kurofune) who was just a
nose in front of Australia’s Criterion (Sebring - Mica’s Pride by
Bite The Bullet).
The win took Blazing Speed’s total earnings past
HK$31.5million from 27 starts, a handsome return on the
41,000 guineas to purchase him as a yearling.

My Baksan prevails in three-way

The 9th running of the Malayan Racing Association Trophy at
the Veliefendi Racecourse, Istanbul on July 22, 2015 produced
a thrilling finish in which the first three horses went to the
line almost in a line.
And Halis Karatas showed just why he is Turkey’s alltime top rider with more than 5,500 wins to his name by
steering My Baskan (Luxor - Gloria by Mujtahid) to win by a
nose from Lannister (Kaneko - Anyela by Hernando). Yalpagan
(Unaccounted For - Gimme Hope Joanna by Sri Pekan) was a
further nose away third.
My Baskan, a top three-year-old who earlier in the year
reeled off six wins in a row including the 2000 Guineas, had
failed in the Derby the previous start, the only time he had
finished out of board.
Karatas had the colt well back in the early running. While
the others went wide at the home bend for the run home,
Karatas went for a run on the rails with My Baskan and the
pair hit the front 200m out. The challengers came, especially
Lannister who was flashing home wide out but My Baskan
held on for his win.
The winner is owned and bred by Hulusi Taskiran and
trained by Hasan Altunbas. It was the third consecutive year
that Karatas has won the reciprocal race. The prize money
was 250,000 Turkish Lira which is about RM300,000.
On hand to witness the race was myself and John Pillay of
Singapore Turf Club and I had the pleasure of presenting the
trophy to the winning jockey.

A DAY AT THE
ROYAL ASCOT
My first introduction to the Royal Ascot was from the film
“My Fair Lady” that I watched in 1965 as a young student
in Penang. The Royal Ascot has always been as much about
socialising, fashion and style as it is about horse racing. In
the fabulous and much beloved “My Fair Lady”, Professor
Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) wanted to show that he
could transform a cockney working class girl, Eliza Doolittle
(Audrey Hepburn), to pass off as a cultured member of high
society. As for that, what better place for him to bring Eliza
Doolittle to than to the Royal Ascot.

During our recent visit to London from 15th June to 25th
June 2015, as my wife and I missed the Wimbledon, we
decided to attend the Royal Ascot. The Royal Ascot race
course is located 30 miles west of London. It is a highly
anticipated and revered event that attracts many of the
world’s finest horses to compete for the 5.5 million pound
prize money. Over 30,000 people attended the Royal Ascot
races this year. The Queen of England, a dedicated race horse
owner, has attended every Royal Ascot event since the start
of her reign. My wife and I managed to see and take many
photographs of the Royal Procession at close proximity.
The Royal Ascot dress code is very strict. As I walked
around, I could see the Royal Ascot’s demand for formal
couture has stood the test of time.
This year’s most desired prize, the Gold Cup, was won
by Trip To Paris, trained by Ed Dunlop, and the jockey was
an Irishman, Graham Lee. Trip To Paris is jointly owned by
seven partners.
Our trip to the Royal Ascot was very enjoyable and an
engaging experience. The race course was founded more
than 300 years ago and for us, visiting the Royal Ascot was
akin to visiting history.

here has been organised racing
in Penang for 151 years, with
the Penang Turf Club having
been founded in 1864.
But the first ponies from England
started to arrive in Penang (formerly
known as Prince of Wales Island) as
soon as Francis Light hoisted the Union
Jack in 1786 at the Esplanade in honour
of George, Prince of Wales, who later
became King George IV.
An oil painting by William
Daniell in 1818 (a year before the
founding of Singapore) shows the
view of North Beach from the Council
House, depicts clearly four horses on
the beach with their strappers.
However, the Sport of Kings
only took off with the establishment
of the Penang Turf Club. It was natural
that David Brown, a member of the
celebrated Gelugor family, should have
been the first President and that a son
of his, D A M Brown, should at the turn
of the century be Secretary and Clerk of
the Course and in due time President.
The Club received a free land
grant in Macalister Road for its course
of seven furlongs and 81 3/4 yards.
Here the first stands and buildings
of wood and attap were put up in
1869 and small annual meetings were
started. Prizemonies were never more
than $600 for the whole meeting then.
The racecourse became the
venue for recreation for the English
gentlemen and ladies as the sport was
confined exclusively to the Europeans.
Even then, the influence of the East was
prevalent as can be seen in a trophy
laced with Chinese dragons in 1878.
By 1898, Penang was holding two
meetings a year, two days in January
and two in July, known as the Spring
and Autumn races. Prizemoney for the
year totalled $5,950. Race days were

usually on Wednesdays and Saturdays
and were declared public holidays in
the Straits Settlement of Penang.
Even the funicular hill railway
timetable was scheduled to coincide
with race days. Hence, the late trains
up the hill were on Wednesdays
and Saturdays. This practice was
discontinued only recently.
In 1900, new and substantial
stands were built. These were to serve
the Club for nearly 40 years until the
Club acquired its present 93-hectare
site for $250,000 at Batu Gantong in
1935.
At the three-day January meeting
in 1907, the stakes totalled $26,000.
There were entries from the Federated
Malay States, Singapore, Burma, the
Netherlands Indies and India.
Membership was then 500.
Locals became involved in racing
by the turn of the century and
among the prominent Penang owners
were Dr P V Locke, Lee Toon Poon,
Chung Thye Siong and his brother
Chung Thye Pin, whose Devilment
won the Singapore Derby in 1905.
Chung Thye Pin donated a
cast-iron water fountain
to the Club in 1904. This
fountain is now relocated
to the front of the golf clubhouse.
World War I held up the growth
of racing throughout the region and it
had barely had time to get going again
before it was badly affected by the
Depression of the Thirties.
Nevertheless, Penang went ahead
with the purchase and construction
of the new course and stands at Batu
Gantong in a splendid setting. Work
was completed at a cost of $350,000 and
the course was opened on May 27, 1939
by J D Kemp, who was President when
work began in 1936.
The course is nine furlongs and 94
yards. The Club also has a golf course
with seven holes in the centre of the
course proper and 11 holes in adjoining
areas. The three-floor grandstand is
of the most modern design, giving all
seats a clear view of racing. There are
excellent totalisator and other facilities
and an infield indicator board. Racing

can also be viewed from tea pavilions
for members and Ordinary Members.
When World War II broke out
there were over 100 horses in training
at Penang. Largely due to the efforts of
Ong Huck Lim, a prominent Chancery
lawyer who later became President of
the Club, racing managed to carry on
between 1942 and 1945.
With
Lieutenant
Colonel
Drake-Brockman, Ong worked on
rehabilitation after the war and they
were later joined by C D D Hogan, a
former President, in ensuring a return
to pre-war standards. Lee Toon Poon,
for many years a prominent supporter
of the Club, became President and he
was succeeded by Tan Sri Lee Tiang
Keng and Datuk Lim Huck Aik.
Datuk Lim was the longest
serving President, from November 1958
until his retirement in July 1982. He
must be remembered as the person
who is instrumental in turning the
Penang Turf Club from the verge of
bankruptcy (in those early days) to
what it is today.
The end of 1978 marked the
opening of the Grandstand Extension
Building which was built adjacent
to the existing grandstand. The new
grandstand is a commendable piece
of architecture that cost about RM4.5
million and took two years to build.
This extension, which provides seating
for 3,000 and standing room for 2,000,
brought the Club’s capacity to 8,000.
The new building with two tiers
of public gallery and split level rows
of chairs, gives an unobstructed view

of racing. The top floor houses the
VIP suite, luxuriously finished with
boxed in windows and skylights that
allow for natural lighting of the lounge
behind the viewing boxes. There were
also cafeterias on the first and second
floors.
The year 1980 was a very
busy one for the Club. It marked the
complete installation of a closed-circuit
television system and also a new
computerised tote sell/pay system. In
December that year, the Yang
di-Pertua Negeri Gold Cup Meeting
was transmitted to the Perak Turf Club,
marking the first-ever “live” telecast of
races on the local circuit.
The year 2000 was also a
significant one for the Penang Turf
Club. Firstly, the Club co-hosted the
27th Asian Racing Conference with the
Singapore Turf Club.
The same year, the Club staged
the first million-ringgit race in Malaysia
with the running of the Yang di-Pertua
Negeri Gold Cup.
In 2003, Penang Turf Club
added a second million-ringgit race
to its calendar when prizemoney for
the Sprint Trophy was raised to RM1
million with the sponsorship of Astro
Wah Lai Toi.
In 2009, stakes for the Malaysian
Magic Millions Classic was raised to
RM1 million, making Penang Turf Club
the first to stages three million-ringgit
races in the country.
Refurbishment of the main
racing track commenced on 5 July 2010
and was completed on 31 December
2010. It was re-opened for racing in
March 2011. A total of RM16.5 million
was spent to re-turf and to improve the
drainage system of the race track.
The grass training track had
undergone repair and restoration
works from 1 January 2012. It was reopened for training in May 2012. With
these two upgrading works, Penang
Turf Club’s horse racing and training
tracks are considered to be one of the
best and safest tracks in the region.

supervision of Tom Verity, a former professional at the Royal Selangor
Golf Club. The course started with 9 holes in 1966 and later expanded
to 18 holes with 9 holes constructed within the racing tracks, the most

December 2014 and it is a 9-hole course today.

BOOKING SYSTEM
•The club will accept bookings for 8 lesson packages paid in advance according to the availability of slots.
• Bookings can be made in advance to ensure your booking is secured.
•Cancellations – must be made 24hrs prior to your lesson during business hours (8.30am – 12.00nn, 2.30pm – 5.30pm).
In the event that no cancellations are made, the lesson will be charged accordingly. The Management reserves the right
to cancel, postpone or re-schedule the bookings made.

his guest(s) during period of stay.
4. A cancellation charge equivalent to a night’s
stay (RM200.00 or RM250.00) shall be
charged for any cancellation made after
booking has been confirmed and/or accepted by

The PNTC Museum
Take a trip down memory lane where the Club’s
oldest and fondest are housed
From antique trophies, cups and other valuables to paraphernalia
like badges, admission tickets, race books and racing calendars
dating back to 1912; a wide range of artefacts can be found in the
museum located at the Ground Floor of the Club.
Take the opportunity to browse through the exhibits on on-course
race days and learn more about the history of the club.
