Dear Alumni and Friends:
T
he ongoing development of the University of New Haven into one of the finest
comprehensive universities in the region is driven by the generosity of our alumni and friends.
This support enables us to continue to develop innovative academic programs, break ground
on state-of-the-art facilities and dedicate resources to attract talented students, faculty and
staff who enhance our already strong reputation.
In reality, the University faces a challenging environment in which to raise these critical funds.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports that only about half of the top charities are raising more
than they did in 2007, when the recession started.
But at UNH we are bucking this trend. We were raising more than $6 million annually in the
years before the recession. We raised nearly $8 million each year during the first two years of
the recession and have averaged nearly $10 million a year for the past three fiscal years.
This is a testament to the scores of alumni, friends, parents, corporations and foundations
that understand their contribution is a worthwhile and meaningful investment in the

A World War II veteran, John Frey earned his associate degree
in engineering science by attending night classes. So meaningful
was the experience for him that he became a donor as soon
as he graduated, and he went on to play many important volunteer
roles for the University in the ensuing years.
What Motivates?
After graduating from UNH, John joined Hershey Metal Products
in Ansonia, a metal fabricating business founded by his uncle.
He spent his entire career with that business, rising to the presidency
of the company.
While his business responsibilities demanded a lot of his time, John
never lost touch with his alma mater. He served as president of the
Alumni Association during the 1970s, was a member of the Board of
Governors and devoted his talents and energy to many committees.
A Maxcy Legacy Society member, he received the President’s Award
for his service in 1996.
Why He Gives:
“My UNH education was a very satisfying
experience,” he says. “It was the foundation
of my career, and I felt a responsibility to give
something back to the University.”
In 1989, he and his wife, Mildred, established
the Mildred and John Frey/Paul Hershey Endowed
Scholarship, which has helped many students
pursue their dreams with a University of
New Haven education.

Major: Marine Biology
Involvement: Samuel participated in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)
program the last two years. Last summer, he and his faculty mentor, Roman Zajac, professor and
chair of biology and environmental science, set out to 10 salt marsh systems from Stratford to
Stonington, studying the habitat use of fiddler crabs. The SURF program is supported through
a generous donation from Frank Carrubba ’69, ’79 M.S., a member of the University’s Board
of Governors, and his wife, Pat. Additionally, during the summer of 2011, Samuel worked
at Schooner Inc., a nonprofit marine science educational camp in New Haven.
Hope for the future: He hopes to pursue applied marine science research and would like
to work at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Why he is grateful: “I often went on adventures as a kid to local beaches in the New Haven
area. In high school, I would read articles on growing issues in the ocean, and those definitely
sparked my interest. Research is what I aim to do in my career. This was a great opportunity
to gain experience as an undergraduate, and it gave me a taste of what it is like to have
a hypothesis and to learn how to figure out a reasonable route to a solution.”

A math professor who taught at Housatonic Community College for 30-plus years
and now teaches there part time, Betsey Doane earned her master’s degree in computer
sciences from UNH in 1988. She has been a consistent supporter of the University.
What Motivates?
Born blind, Betsey has never allowed that to stand in her way. Having earned a B.A. degree
from Albertus Magnus College and an M.A. in mathematics from UMass Amherst, she was
well into her teaching career when she became increasingly interested in computers as
teaching tools.
“I was so intrigued by how
computers could be used to teach
theory in calculus that I developed
a course called ‘Mathematical
Application for Computers’ while
I was still completing my
graduate degree,” she says.
Now retired, she continues to
teach part time and primarily
online. “I really enjoy working
with students and love to play
with new software and discover
new ways to use computer
technology to make education
better,” she says.
Why She Gives:
“I had a lot of fun when I was
completing my computer
sciences degree,” says Betsey,
whose late husband, Paul, was
also a UNH graduate. Over the years she steadily built upon that educational foundation,
constantly adopting and adapting new computer tools and software to enhance the classes
she taught.
“I really believe in the quality of education at UNH,” she says. “I like the creative work
UNH is doing, and I’m proud to support it.”

H AT F I E L D S C H O L A R P R O G R A M
John D. Hatfield, the University’s first
executive vice president, provost and
chief operating officer, was a man with
a bold vision of what the University
could be. And to the very end of his life he
invested his considerable energy in making
that vision a reality, recalls Philip Bartels,
now chair of the UNH Board of Governors.
“Regardless of how well the University
was doing, John always saw room for
improvement – better facilities, scholastic
improvement, everything,” says Phil.
“He challenged everyone to do things better. He strongly believed in
collegiality, and his enthusiasm was, indeed, infectious.” A day before
his premature death, in 2003, Hatfield was still sending emails with
new ideas, Phil remembers.
So moved were they by Hatfield’s passion for the University that
Phil’s parents – Henry Bartels, emeritus member of the Board of
Governors, and his wife, Nancy – established the John D. Hatfield
Scholar Program in his memory. “My parents felt that,
as provost, John was the person who really started the
incredible transformation of the University, which has been
continued and significantly expanded under the dynamic
leadership of President Steve Kaplan,” says Phil.
“They wanted to recognize and honor John for his
tremendous energy and for his broad vision.”
“Quite honestly, without the Hatfield scholarship
and other scholarships I have earned, I wouldn’t
be able to go to college,” says Christina Kling ’14
(left) of North Haven, a biotechnology major
and one of this year’s six scholars. “I come from
a low-income family, and I am the first person
in my immediate family to go to college.
Thanks to the financial support I’ve received
from UNH I am able to complete the first step
in pursuing my goal of earning a Ph.D. and
doing medical and pharmaceutical research,
particularly for unmet medical needs.”
A devoted student who earned very high grades in high school,
Christina has maintained a GPA of nearly 4.0 while working
part-time jobs since her sophomore year. She’s also found time
to volunteer as a peer mentor for Sound School students working
on their senior capstone projects. “My education has opened many
doors for me, and I am very grateful to have been chosen
as a Hatfield Scholar,” she says.
The Hatfield Scholar Program is merit-based.
Sophomores and juniors who have a cumulative
grade point average of at least 3.5 are invited
to apply for the annual award. Three students
from each class are chosen to hold the
designation of John Hatfield Scholar during
their junior and senior year. They receive
a $2,000 scholarship and a bronze medal.
Since 2004, nearly 60 students have
earned the highly coveted award.
The Hatfield program perpetuates
the memory of John Hatfield’s service
to the University while helping
deserving young people pursue their
academic careers and achieve success
beyond UNH.

Lifelong New Haven area resident Cynthia Kohan is an infection control practitioner
at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where she has worked since 1980. She came to UNH
in the 1990s to pursue her longstanding personal goal of earning a graduate degree
in health care management.
What Matters:
When Cynthia’s son, Tim, began looking at programs in music and sound recording,
Cynthia says she was “surprised to find such a good program right here at UNH.”
With Tim also involved in the marching band and other musical activities, Cynthia has
found herself spending more time on campus. And, she says, she was astonished to find
how much the campus has changed since she was working on her master’s degree.
Why She Gives:
“When I attended classes at UNH, it was a much smaller campus than it is today,
but it was always a solid school with solid degree programs,” says Cynthia, a member
of the University’s Loyal Engaged Annual Donor (LEAD) society. “After Tim enrolled here,
we decided it was important to support the University,” she says. “Lots of local kids from
all over Greater New Haven got their education there. They were here when I was going to
school, and they are still here. That’s why I contribute – to help out local kids like my son.”

Major: Music Industry
Involvement: Supported by a stipend from the Bergami Family Summer
Internship Program, Shannon spent last summer interning in the creative
department at Sony/ATV Music Publishing in Nashville, Tenn., the largest
music publishing company in the world. She assisted with managing
Sony’s song catalog and calculating the weekly Billboard chart shares.
While in Nashville, she also interned at Big 98 WSIX FM. She previously
interned at two radio stations in Pennsylvania. Additionally, she studied
at the University’s campus in Tuscany, Italy, last spring, and she serves as
the advertising manager and music editorialist for the Charger Bulletin.
Hope for the future: “I was always trying to figure out what aspect
of the music industry I could see myself working in for the rest of my life,
and I think I finally recognized that music publishing is a great fit.”
Why she is grateful: “I know that the music industry is one of the
hardest, if not the hardest, career paths to land a job in, but I feel overly
prepared and am eager to start looking. I feel very lucky to be at a school
where I can learn so much about the field I’d like to progress in. I truly loved
the experience.”

WHY
ROBERT M. GORDON
Robert M. Gordon first came to UNH to take a leadership course taught by a trio of University Board of
Governors members whose names would one day grace three buildings: Ellis C. Maxcy, Roland M. Bixler
and John E. Echlin.
A young businessman at the time, Gordon felt an immediate connection to the University that has
continued to this day.
Before long, he was asked by then-president Marvin K. Peterson to help raise funds for a UNH campaign.
Gordon, who worked at Milford Rivet and went on to become president and chairman of the company
and, later, president of Raybestos/Manhattan, took on the task with gusto. He was named to the UNH
Board of Governors and became one of its longest-serving members. One of his proudest moments came
when he received an Honorary Doctor of Law degree from the University in 1987. He continues to serve
as an emeritus member of the board.
What Motivates:
“When I started on the board, the school was morphing into a university,
and we had just moved to West Haven,” he said. “It was a very important
occasion in the school’s life and for anyone connected with it.”
One of his earliest contributions was saving Maxcy Hall. “The big
question at the time was, Should we tear down Maxcy Hall or should
it be restored?” he said. “I fought for restoration. It was such an icon.
You’d never create another building like that, a cornerstone for the
University. I thought if Yale had a few old buildings, why can’t we?”
Why Give:
Gordon, who lives in Naples, Florida, stopped back for a visit this summer.
He found the changes made under President Steve Kaplan remarkable.
“His vision for the University is extraordinary,” Gordon said.
“The University is always on the upswing, almost endless in the way it is
changing and moving, getting better and better.”
He gives because he believes in the mission and cares deeply about
the students. “I’m proud to be part of the UNH community.”
Bob Gordon passed away on January 15, 2014.

How to Become a Maxcy Legacy Society Member
You may become a member by:
• Naming the University as beneficiary in your will, trust,
life insurance policy or Individual Retirement Account.
• Establishing a life income arrangement, such as a charitable
remainder trust. These gift plans provide an income stream
to the donor for life and ultimately benefit the University.
• Informing UNH of your legacy gift plans.
Legacy Gift Opportunities
Many legacy gifts allow you to achieve your philanthropic and financial
goals. Popular legacy gift plans include:
• Designating UNH to receive a bequest in your will.
• Naming UNH as the beneficiary of an insurance policy
or a retirement account.
• Establishing a charitable trust that will provide lifetime income
for one or two individuals. UNH receives the remainder when
the trust terminates.
• Giving a residence to UNH while retaining lifetime use.
