Freddy’s extraordinary

her outside every morning. These morning excursions provide her
with a wonderland of ideas and endless inspiration. Her quilts often

Add the 4 remaining Border Units
to each end of the top and bottom border. Stitch short
borders to the sides of the quilt and the long borders to
the top and bottom. (You may need to ease the borders
slightly. If they are too long, increase the seam allowance
between a few units until the borders fit.)

(Fig. 1). Press the seam toward the stem strip. Sew F or
borders to the top and bottom and trim.
I patches to the opposite side of the stem strip, matching
the triangles (Fig. 2). Press the seams toward the strips

with I’s.

Tip
ACCURATE PIECED SQUARES
line. To square the units in this pattern to 2 1⁄2˝, the 2 1⁄2˝
marking on the left-hand side and bottom edge of the
ruler should be either directly on the edges of the unit or
inside the unit, not beyond the edge of the fabric. When
the ruler is correctly positioned, check to see if there is any
fabric extending beyond the edge of the ruler on on the
right-hand side and top edge. If there is, use the rotary
cutter to trim it off (Fig. 1).
Turn the unit 90° and repeat the process. The unit
should now measure exactly 2 1⁄2˝.
Whether you call it ˝truing up,˝ ˝squaring up,˝ or
˝trimming off,˝ it is important to check the accuracy of
your half-square triangle units before incorporating them
into the pieced block.
With the right side facing
you, place the half-square
triangle unit onto the cutting
board. Lay a clear plastic ruler
over the unit, with the 45°
marking directly over the seam
