ayor Gallagher spoke eloquently at the
June 22, 2010 meeting of the
Somerville Board of Education in appreciation of the accomplishments and dedication of retired
superintendent of schools, Dr. Carolyn F. Leary.
Reading from the Borough of Somerville proclamation
that was presented to Dr. Leary, Mayor Gallagher said,
“Dr. Leary has been the superintendent of schools for
the Somerville Borough since 1991 and has dedicated
her career to improving the Somerville school district
and the quality of life for all in our borough. Dr. Leary
set high standards of quality for herself, the district faculty and staff, the students, the facilities, and the programs
and instruction.”

SOMERVILLE WELCOMES
INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT
OF SCHOOLS
D
r. Thomas F. Butler joined the Somerville
Public School district as interim superintendent of schools on July 1, 2010. Dr. Butler
replaces retired superintendent of schools, Dr. Carolyn
F. Leary, while the Board continues its search for a permanent replacement for the position.
An experienced and respected administrator with a
Doctorate in Educational Administration and
Supervision from Rutgers University, Dr. Butler has over
thirty-three years of central office experience. For the
last sixteen years he has served as interim superintendent for a variety of K-12, 9-12, and K-8 school districts
throughout northern and central New Jersey. This is his
sixth visit to Somerset County having previously occupied the role in
Branchburg,
BridgewaterRaritan Regional,
Montgomery,
Somerset Hills
Regional, and
Watchung Hills
Regional.
While in
Somerville, Dr.
Butler will continue to expand
and enhance the
district’s record
of achievement.
His role is to
continue implemention of the
Dr. Thomas F. Butler
Board of Education’s
approved budgetary
and educational plan. He will assist the school district in
continuing its mission to nurture intellectual growrth
and civic responsibility.
Dr. Butler and his wife Donna have lived in
Martinsville for the past thirty-six years. They are both
life members of the Martinsville Rescue Squad after retiring two years ago after thirty years of service to their
community. They have a married son and two grandchildren living in Carrabassett Valley, Maine, and a married
daughter and two grandchildren living in King of
Prussia, Pennsylvania.■

FESTIVITIES MARK DEDICATION OF GUS VANDERBEEK ATHLETIC
COMPLEX AT SHS
On June 13, 2010, TEAM GREEN, a fund raising collaboration, hosted a community dedication ceremony at Brooks Field to recognize and honor the generosity of donors who made the
dream of state-of-the-art athletic turf fields at SHS a reality. Special honorees were Jeff
Vanderbeek and the Vanderbeek family, whose donation was memorialized by the Somerville
Board of Education’s resolution to officially name the SHS fields the Gus Vanderbeek Athletic
Complex. Pictured are the Wall of Fame and Walk of Champions that was unveiled at the dedication ceremony to acknowledge donations from the community.■

Mrs. Francesca Bardes, a reading specialist at Van

Madame Husk is seen playing her guitar while her students are engaged in song. In addition to her French

Education course. The teaching accolade awarded to Ms.
Husk is well deserved as she encourages students to prepare to enter the world’s noblest profession: teaching.

“IMPOSSIBLE BLOSSOMS” EXHIBITED AT SHS
S
omerville High School art students created
an “Impossible Blossoms” winter exhibit
in the school’s outdoor courtyard, which
was inspired by the artistic style of contemporary artist, Sandy Skoglund. Art and
Photography Club members, along with SHS art
students, designed tissue paper flowers under
the direction of staff members, Lynn Bielicky,
Lisa Conklin, and Susan Shelton.
The project was completed in two phases.
During February, Photography Club members,

in support of the school’s character education
program, delivered colorful tissue paper bouquets to neighbors. What a surprising springlike experience on a cold winter’s day!
In March, students transformed the high
school’s exterior courtyard space into a temporary sea of spring blooms created by installing
hundreds of handmade tissue paper flowers.
The temporary exhibit was a visual masterpiece
enjoyed by the entire Somerville High School
community.■

DEMOCRACY IN ACTION AT VDV
As the adults of the community were casting
their budget votes, Van Derveer students cast
ballots of their own to choose a special schoolwide activity. During the school budget vote in
April, the teachers at Van Derveer Elementary
School captured the “teachable moment” to
educate students about our voting system.
Lessons focused on civic responsibilities, the
voting process, and the importance of exercis-
ing the right to vote.
The voting result was a school picnic. On
May 28, 2010, the school community took to
the Van Derveer fields to celebrate Memorial
Day. Students sported sunglasses and towels as
they enjoyed a picnic lunch and fun-filled day
in the sun. The voting experience and sense of
school community illustrated democracy in
action.■
VDV GIRLS ON THE RUN
On June 7, 2010, the weather was cool and
sunny for the thirty female students who ran the 5K
distance to the finish line at Colonial Park in
Franklin. Sponsored by New Balance™, the race culminated a 10-week character-building program at
Van Derveer Elementary School. Staff members,
Jennifer Osborn and Danielle Schweers, coached
students as they trained for the race while providing life lessons focusing on nutrition, communication, and healthy lifestyles. Parents, friends, and
teachers celebrated the girls’ accomplishments at a
healthy eating party on June 15, 2010.■

SHS FRENCH TEACHER
Congratulations to Victoria Kessler, Somerville High
School Teacher of French, on her recent completion of
a two year course of study that resulted in her attainment of Master Teacher of Holocaust Education status.

preschool students enjoyed learning about new
places and cultures during the month of April.
Thanks to parent volunteers who shared their
cultures, preschool students were able to learn
about the geography, climate, history, and people of the nationalities represented by their
classmates.
