WELCOME BACK
to another beautiful summer on Harsens Island.
Whether it’s the calendar OR the temperature, many
folks just can’t believe it’s MEMORIAL DAY!! It
is rare that Memorial Day is this early AND Labor Day
is so late, but look at it as a gift... we get to enjoy an
extra week of summer!!
The first issue of the FLYER is always special
because we have many new businesses advertising,
a half a dozen Garage Sales to pick from, and lots of
fun facts about all that transpired since our last issue
(Aug.`08). If you need a break from opening up the
cottage, head over to the Lions Hall where the Lions
will be grilling enough pancakes for all of us!
(Saturday morning: 8am -11am; $5 donation)

MEMORIALS & TRIBUTES
Many THANKS to the Delta News committee who lovingly
collects island obituaries throughout the year.
Here is an edited version of what I received from them:
HETTY MAY MUNRO Age 92 of Harsen's Island passed
away on August 24, 2008. Hetty and her husband,
George, were both lifelong residents of Harsens Island.
They met on the Island and were married for 58 wonderful
years. She will always be remembered for her ability to
drive the motorized raft back and forth from the Riverside
(Upmals) Grocery to the island cottage until she was 91
years old. Hetty was very much loved by all who knew her
and will be sadly missed by all of her friends and family.
DELPHINE BALOGA Age 74 of Harsens's Island
passed away on September 7, 2008.Delphine was an active
member of H. Is. Garden Club, She also enjoyed cooking
& baking.
JUDITH ANN (BURGETT) CHAMBERLAIN Age 71 of
Harsens Is. passed away on September 28, 2008. Judy was
born April 9, 1937, to the late George J. Burgett, Jr., and
Wilhelmina Burgett. Judy's great great grandfather, Charles
Gagnier, first came to the Island around 1895, and her
grandfather, George J. Burgett, Sr., built on the Venice
Highway canal in the Flats in the early 1900's. The cottage is
still in the family today. Judy's husband, John, is the
grandson of Alex McMinn who came to the Island in the
early 1900's. Judy and John spent their childhood summers
on the Venice. and they honeymooned on the island in 1956.
CHERYL ANN MARIE GROUT Age 51 of Houston, TX
& Harsen's Is., passed away on October 24, 2008. Cheryl's
incredible strength & courage will be long-remembered by
many who witnessed her warrior's fight against cancer.
ANDREAS C. SUYKERBUYK Age 59 of Rochester Hills
and Harsens Island, died suddenly December 11, 2008, doing
what he loved best hiking in the mountains of Arizona.
Dearest husband and best friend of Judith.
MARIE BURR of Harsens Island passed away in Dec. 2008.
Marie is fondly remembered for her joy and hospitality! Her
home was always open for family, friends and neighbors.
She was very involved in Cherry Beach and Harsen's Island
Senior Centers. She had a tremendous love for Harsen's
Island and St. Mark's Church. She served St. Marks Church
in many capacities, President of the Women's Guild,
Eucharistic Minister and Minister of the Sick. She was
involved in St. Marks Christmas Giving Tree and dressed up
as Santa Claus for the children. In 1987, on her way to
church, her car skidded into a ditch. She had water up to her
chin. She grabbed her medal and said: “Jesus, Mary and
Joseph, help me.” She was fished out of the car by three
wonderful angels of Harsen's Island sent by God to save her.
She believed she was saved from the accident for a reason.
Marie spent the next 20 years crocheting afghans and towels,
knitting dishcloths, baking cookies, apple pies, bread and
continually spreading joy and wisdom.
The NEW Country Scene

The Country Scene has re-opened this year
as a consignment shop. It features antiques,
jewelry, nautical items, furniture and new

downsizing your home by marketing your
old treasures and turning those items into cash.
We offer a unique consignment experience,
where we partner with you to display your
items in the best possible fashion, where we
will assist you in pricing and research, with the
option of pick-up and delivery of larger items.
Come see what we have to offer. With a
continuing rotation of stock, as a shopper, you
never know what unique item we may have
from one weekend to the next. We are excited
to join the community and bring a new
vibrancy to downtown Sans Souci.

purchased his own cottage in the early 60's. He moved to
the Island permanently in 1978. He loved to boat, fish,
build and remodel things around the house. He also loved
