Connecting The Dots
updates
London FLUX LONDON DANCE FESTIVAL
May 22-25, 2014
FLUX is a brand new London-based dance festival. In May 2014, local and national dance
companies will thrill audiences with original
choreography in a series of performances
throughout the core of the city. Let yourself
be moved by vivid, contemporary themes and
experience first-hand the passion and excitement of live dance. FLUX London Dance Festival is a new collective led by Lacey Smith and
Bizz Varty. Their vision is to increase accessibility to professional dance in the London
community and further develop touring opportunities in South Western Ontario for Canadian dance artists and companies. They
endeavour to increase the vibrancy of London’s culture through the richness and diversity that contemporary dance offers. FLUX will
devote its efforts to presenting work that
speaks to Londoners while developing and
growing with the city’s needs.
A Connecting The Dots Forum will take place
during the festival. Three nights, two days of
dance performances by renowned artists, and
classes in western and non-western dance
technique, repertory and composition.
North Bay PULSE ONTARIO DANCE
CONFERENCE
May 8-11—is offering teachers a unique professional learning symposium which will include experiential workshops for both elementary and secondary educators, themed
break out sessions and opportunities for networking and sharing best practices and resources with other dance educators in the
province of Ontario. With the support of
CODE, Dance Ontario, Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Ontario Arts Council, it has
afforded the Pulse organization an awesome
opportunity to present this conference in
North Bay this year and in doing so we have
been inspired to embed a strong connection
to First Nations & environmental perspectives.
Additionally this will be our first bilingual conference and translators will be in each workshop location to provide on site translation.
Our new website is in the process of also being translated into French.
Halton District
HALTON DISTRICT NETWORK (HDN)
Halton District Network is now established,
initiating regular meetings to identify longterm, sustainable projects for the area. In
Burlington, Burlington Performing Arts is now
on board and looking at outdoor events including Magical Evening of Dance planned for
August 2014 at the Burlington Band Shell. The
importance of establishing an events calendar
Ontario Arts Council—
From Peter Caldwell—On February 26, OAC
hosted Arts Days at Queen’s Park(AD@QP). I
would like to thank the 60 plus arts representatives, some of whom travelled a great distance, for meetings with 55 MPPs, who were
happy to meet with artists and other arts representatives to hear about the important contribution the arts make to their communities.
Special thanks also to our provincial arts service organizations (the PASO coalition), who
collaborated with us, as well as to the three
national arts service organizations (Orchestras
Canada, la Fédération culturelle canadiennefrançaise and CAPACOA) who assisted us.
AD@QP was a great success, including nearly
1000 Twitter posts and 82 pictures posted
using #ArtsDayQP / #JourdartQP and variations. The day culminated in a reception attended by approximately 100 artists and artsorganization representatives and many MPPs.
We were pleased that Minister Michael Chan,
as well as the two Culture Critics, PC MPP Laurie Scott and NDP MPP Paul Miller, joined us
to speak on behalf of public support for the
arts through OAC.
artsbuild ontario— Asset
Planner for the Arts - How it Helps Ontario's
Arts Organizations If you’re like many arts
organizations, being proactive around keeping
your facilities in good condition is a real challenge. You know which window is a bit drafty,
but do you know how long your building’s
roof will last? ArtsBuild’s newest resource,
Asset Planner for the Arts, now makes it possible for you to track all of your facility’s components in one place – from the roof shingles
down to the furnace pilot light. And Asset
Planner does even more. It lets you know
how much it will cost to replace outdated
parts of your building and when you need to
do the work. With Asset Planner for the Arts,
you can get a full assessment of your facility’s
condition and create accurate, detailed capital
forecasts for up to 30 years, with a focus on
the next five years. Contact Lindsay MacDonald, Director of Programs, to book your free

sionals considering locating in a non-metropolitan community. As arts director recently stated to us – ‘The interest from
the Arts Endowment Fund supports our arts education programs for students attending schools in Toronto’s priority and
inner city neighbourhoods. Many of these children are new to
Canada and many have, otherwise limited access to arts education experience with a talented professional artist.”
We believe strongly in arts education – it is good
economics, our artists deserve it, and the kids deserve it.

Toronto Arts Council—TAC hosted
its AGM at the end of 2013 and welcomed a new Board President: dance artist Nova Bhattacharya has succeeded Karen
Tisch who stepped down after twelve years on the TAC
Board. In addition, four new members joined the Board: Chris
Lorway, the former Artistic Director of Luminato Festival and
current Executive Director of Soundstreams; Lauren Howes,
Executive Director of the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution
Centre since 2006, who will serve as the Co-Chair of the Visual/Media Arts Committee; Richard Hill, curator, critic and art
historian of Cree and other heritages who will also co-chair
the Visual/Media Arts Committee; and dance artist Louis Laberge-Côté who will serve as Chair of the Dance Committee.
Appreciation goes to outgoing Directors Curtis Barlow, Danis
Goulet, Natalie Lue and Jessica Wyman for their valuable contributions of many years on the TAC Board.
Ontario Arts Foundation:
benefits of arts education—
Reprinted courtesy of Alan Walker, ED of Ontario Arts Foundation
A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education comments on the ‘economic value’ of an arts education. The
study ( by the National Endowment for the Arts) is interesting
as it seeks to follow the relationship of arts and culture industries to GDP ( a countries’ gross domestic product ). It would
be interesting to unearth Canadian data, but the summary
results suggest arts education is a path that leads to greater
creativity and innovation in the work force.
In the US, arts education added $76. Billion to the
country’s GDP
Arts education as an ‘industry’ employed almost 18,000
people
For every dollar spent by a consumer on arts education,
an additional 56 cents is generated elsewhere in the US
economy.
Intrinsic Benefits
Education in dance, theatre, music and the visual
arts stimulates curiosity, creativity, imagination and capacity
for evaluation – skills highly prized in in the work force. An
older report by the RAND Corporation ( Gifts of the Muse –
2004 ) comments on two benefits from arts participation.
They were phrased as ‘intrinsic benefits’ which connect with
‘a distinctive type of pleasure and emotional stimulation’ for
the participant, and ‘instrumental’ benefits, more output/
quantitative oriented.
The article uses the analogy of an arts festival, which
creates local economic activity (instrumental) and social interactions within a community (intrinsic). Instrumental benefits have been more difficult to quantify and therefore have
been reported on less, but now with this study, direct economic benefits can be articulated and measured.
It would be beneficial, if it could be universally accepted that arts education is integral to education at all levels. Being able to point to economic benefits may help promote arts education, at a time when it can be the first budget
to be cut/cut back in challenging financial times. In the arts
organizations we serve, many organizations direct endowment income towards arts education/arts outreach programs
in their local communities. As well as instilling the ‘instrinsic
benefits’ to children, youth and adults, these program employ
artists. In smaller communities, arts education programs
( culture activity in general ) are important draws to profess

Innovation from Kalanidhi Fine Arts of Canada - the TorontoMumbai (T-M) simulcast brought two internationally renowned Indian dance companies together to share a common virtual stage and a common performance time over the
internet thus bridging the enormous gaps between their
physical locations and time zones. The simulcast commenced
Saturday March 15th at 9:30am EST in Toronto (which will
be 7pm GMT in the evening in Mumbai). Toronto audiences witnessed the ‘ Governor General‘s Life Time Achievement
Award and Walter Carsen Performing Arts Prize` winning choreographer Menaka Thakkar’s work ‘Chitra’ danced live at
The Fleck Dance Theatre by 10 dancers of Menaka Thakkar
Dance Company, while Mumbai audiences viewed the same
dancing simultaneously through “live streaming” from Toronto; and after intermission, Mumbai audiences witnessed the
work, ‘Black Swan’ by the renowned Indian choreographer ,
Preeti Patel , danced live by the 21 dancers of her Anjika Manipuri Dance while Toronto audiences viewed the same work
simultaneously at the Fleck Dance Theatre through “Live
Streaming “ from Mumbai. These productions were live
streamed to multiple locations both in the morning as well as
at 2.30 PM (Toronto time) on Saturday March 15.Also, on the
same day evening performance were live streamed to multiple locations in real time at the same price as above.
International dance day
message—Since 2005, the Canadian Dance Assembly (CDA) has issued a Canadian message in conjunction with the
UNESCO message. Santee Smith, choreographer, dancer, and Artistic Director of Kaha:wi Dance Theatre offers her call to action, on
behalf of the Canadian Dance Assembly in celebration of International Dance Day 2014.
Let dance into your life.
Call dance into your life. Breathe
dance into your life. Let dance be
the connection between your spirit
and the living universe. Let dance
be the voice of your soulful resistance, your statement of I am
here, in this space, now. Let dance
resonate from your ancestral memories, from your DNA extending like
tendrils to future generations. Call
your body forth to move, to
speak a language without words.
Dance your dreams and poetry. Find that place deep inside your
inner landscape that longs for expression. Close your eyes and remember the heartbeat rhythm, the first music you heard in your
consciousness. Be the witness to a singular body animated in time
and space or to the awesomeness of a multitude moving in unity. Let
dance represent your metaphor, art, ritual, ceremony and ecstatic
transformation. Energize, revitalize and renew yourself through
dance. Renew your bond to the rhythms of the earth. Heal yourself,
be yourself and together we can dance our humanity. Transform
your life … let dance into your life. Join the celebration and ceremony
of life; join the dance
