by
Mrs. Wanza Presson
Lovelace Cemetery is in Witcherville, Sebastian County, on Highway 71. Witcherville was
called Salem until there was so much confusion over the amil, as there was more than one town
called Salem in Arkansas. The name was changed to Witcherville, after W. J. Witcher, who
came here in 1850 from Virginia and was one of the first settlers in this area.

DESHA
COUNTY CEMETERIES
During 1968-69 several groups and individuals have been copying cemetery inscriptions
in Desha County. We were appalled at the conditions we found. Floods.· time and, most of
all, neglect have done irreparable damage. Thanks to the surveys, people are beginning
to appreciate the historical value of old burying grounds and are making an effort to preserve
what we have left .. -- Mrs. J. H. Stroud! Box 432, McGehee, Arkansas, 71654

HOLLY GROVE CEMETERY, TRIPPE, DESHA
COUNTY, ARKANSAS
Holly Grove Cemetery is at Trippe in Desha County, Arkansas, on the MCGehee-Arkansas City Highway. The cemetery property adjoins that of Delta Country Club on both sides
of the highway. Maude Trippe Bowden, McGehee, who made the survey Nov. 6, 1968, said:
Thirty unmarked graves on side next to the bayou, fully that many on opposite side of
highway where the old church once stood. The church was used during the early 1900's as a
school until it burned. Six graves marked at one time with hand carved wooden head boards
were behind the church. All of the many graves were marked at one time., The church was
built by Grandfather Trippe, and he gave the land for the cemetery, about two, and one-half
acres, on either side of a narrow country road. The holly trees were planted in front of the
church and along the sandy road. Encroachment accounts for the smalIne,sson one side.
Infringement will also be found next Crooked Bayou .

GEORGE
David E. George died at Enid, Oklahoma Territory,. Jan. 13, 1903, alone, broke and
despondent. He was a part-time house painter,a drifter in the brawling Territory. After
his death the story was started that he was really John Wilkes Booth, the man who shot Presidel1t Lincoln. It made a big splash in the newspapers and much has been written on the subject of his actual identity. The body was embalmed and to this day has never been buried.
On a 1902 insurance application he gave his name as David Elihu George, born June 14, 1844
at French Camp, Miss. In 1902 he is known to have visited ''home ", somewhere in Arkansas.
Two names crop up in connection with this man: William Bailey George "of Arkansas" and a
nephew, Willy or Wilty George. I am trying to find out just who this man was, if it is possible at this late date. My interest is historical, not genealogical, but in this case it amounts
to the same thing. If anyone has any clues, please write me.

after W. C. Qray died. She married him in 1887.
Ann Elizabeth's father was David S. Wilson. Who was his first wife? When did they die? .

m. Greenbriar McMurrian. Were they parents of Belle Zora McMurrian {my grandmother)?

of Faulkner Co., Ark. and I believe the Grays came from Murfeesborough. Tenn. A .cousin

LIGHTFOOT
I am trying to determine the accuracy of Carter's "Arkansas Territorial Papers",
Vol. XXI, page 869, where he lists Henry J. Lightfoot. It is my belief that this should be
''Henry T. " as the name of Henry Taylor Lightfoot appears in the 1840 census of Arkansas
and the name Henry J. does not.
My gr-grandfather was Elijah Holiday Lightfoot and appeared in the Territorial Papers
, above the name of Henry T. ,Clark. Elijah Holiday Lightfoot was born Nov. 28, 1810, Mercer Co., Ky., m. Rebecca Ligon. Henry Taylor Lightfoot was b6rn Feb. 22, 1787, Harrodsburg, Ky .• son of Philip and Margaret Fry Lightfoot from Culpeper Co., Va. He married

SHEPHERD
I am searChing for the location of my grandfather's grave. He was James Henry Shepherd who died near Harrison and Conway and was buried there in April, 1874. His wife was
Eliza Ann Blythe. My father, Samuel Jackson Shepherd, was 14 years old at the time of his
father's death. They were from Independence, Mo. and had started back to Kentucky when
Grandpa got bad sick and they went to relatives in Arkansas where he died. I have never been

STANDLEE
I have a book ''Arkansas - A Guide to the state", published in 1941. It referred to .John
standlee, a trapper, wandering up the Arkansas River in 1778, picked a spot at the mouth of
the Cadron Creek to form a settlement. He returned in 1814 and built a house on the spot.
I understand a plaque has been erected there.
Also, I have found a William standlee in Cadron twp., Conway Co. in the 1850 census.
He was 63 at that time, so would have been born ca 1787. He had children Robert, 24; Caroline, 15; Mary, 13; and William, 10. Could this be a brother of my gr-grandfather, Abraham
standlee, who was living in Lexington, Tenn. in 1830 census and at Center Point, Ark. in 1850?
