Major Activities in the new
Faurecia TechCenter
The major activities that the new TechCenter
carries out are Design, Development and
Product & Process Validation (PPV) for
automotive clients, based in India and
abroad. The center caters to design and
assembly of products, tool and fixture
design, testing and geometry checks
on the prototype automotive parts and
finally validating it for production. Parts
developed cover the three business groups
established in Pune:
• instrument & door panels, center
consoles, glove boxes;
• related mechanisms (air vent, armrest,
storage box…);
• seat frames and complete seats;
• complete front-end modules.
Development carried out in Pune covers
the full range of capabilities: concept and
feasibility analysis, prototype tool & parts
manufacturing, development of production
tools, full-set of testing & validation incl.
manufacturing engineering.
The Pune TechCenter has evolved from an
offshore CAD/CAE based outpost in India
to a full-fledged R&D center. Consequently,
Faurecia is looking to specialize the center
and emerge as a center of excellence
within Faurecia for door panels, glove
boxes and center consoles for the
base version. Faurecia is ever more
involved in global vehicle platforms for
automakers and is addressing two key
issues when leading such projects. First,
familiarize with regulatory requirements
in different markets where a particular
model will be launched. Faurecia achieves
this by investigating in detail all the
markets and understand the regulatory
and other statutory standards that are
applicable and assess their implications as
a supplier. Second, Faurecia works in close
coordination with customers regarding
their plans for a particular platform and its
potential market.
CAD – Computer Aided Design
CAE – Computer Aided Engineering
Faurecia employs an extensive team of
trained engineers who are involved with
CAE and CAD of Instrument Panels, glove
boxes, door panel and center consoles at
this R&D center. High end software (such
as CATIA V5, Alias Surface, Photoshop CS5,
Autodesk...) is used for modelling, meshing
and simulation, mold-flow analysis, static
and dynamic crash and impact testing
for all the three functions. With efficient
and constant communication via global
meetings and colleagues spread across
The New Pune TechCenter
Located in the heart of India’s 2nd automobile manufacturing hub city Pune,
after Chennai, the new Pune TechCenter is strategically located with good
connectivity between southern and western India, respectively the developed
and developing rapid emerging automobile hubs of India. The center is a fullyintegrated facility – from CAD/CAE to PPV activities. It has been designed
to modernize and grow to an 800 people engineering TechCenter, which
construction started in April 2011. The total is broken down as follows: 4,500 m²
for offices and 5,500 m² for Product & Process Validation. An extra 10,000m² is
available for later expansion. The Product & Process Validation area includes:
pilot plant, geometry and full-range testing. Pilot plant capabilities include:
pilot plant equipment intended to support pilot builds of various customers
before start of production (SOP) and is not intended for regular production.

the world Faurecia India has been a key
center for most of its programs. CAD
software is majorly used in the creation,
modification, analysis and optimization of
auto component design.
PPV – Product & Process Validation
Once the designing and CAE analysis is
done, the Complete Product package is
sent to the PPV section, which stands for
Product & Process Validation. The process
includes complete prototyping, analysis,
measurement and eventual development of
tools and gauges.
The PPV majorly includes three key
activities/sections:
• Pilot plant: the pilot plant has processes
like manual US welding, vibration
welding, manual assembly, mock-up
and rework, inspection and Faurecia
Excellence Systems (FES) and Health,
Safety & Environment (HSE) compliance.
• Geometry: Geometry includes conformal
mapping method (CMM), FaroArm and
touch-less scanning system. In this
process, complete geometrical analysis
and measurement of the product is
carried out.
• Full-range testing: Testing happens at
various levels right from testing the raw
material to testing of performance and
system.
Testing is conducted to validate various
parameters, such as:
• Safety & Regulation Laboratory (Airbag
and Head Impact);
• Environmental and Climatic Testing;
• Structural and Rigidity Testing;
• Endurance and Durability Testing;
• Functional and Performance Testing.
An example of a project, fully-managed by
the Faurecia new Pune TechCenter, is the
glove-box of the new Peugeot 208, which
has been managed from CAD/CAE to preproduction testing and validation. The
vehicle has been launched on the European
market during the first quarter of 2012.
For the future, Faurecia is looking at a deeper
engagement with automakers in India, as
they clearly want to offer more aesthetically
appealing vehicles, particularly vehicle
interiors, for customers in India. This
necessarily involves closer interaction
between Faurecia and automakers here, so
Faurecia can work hand in hand with them
to meet their quality and cost targets. This
step will enable the Faurecia TechCenter
to be much more self-sufficient in terms
of providing solutions such as developing
tools and processes for customers with
minimal support from outside India.
Training and Development
Our focus has always been to increase
efficiency by attracting the right talent with
the required skill set and have focus on long
term employment thereby keeping a very
low attrition rate. Faurecia has an extensive
training module to groom fresh engineers.
Technical Training is a key component of
inducting and growing employees within
Faurecia. The India Engineering Academy
(IEA) has been designed to impart various
kinds of Faurecia Methodologies &
trainings- focusing on the basics to the
more advanced systems and processes.
Faurecia TechCenter • Pune

Some of the key objectives of the training
held at the IEA are as follows:
Develop & Build trainings and trainers
Faurecia follows very precise and dedicated
methodologies specific to its domainsthis translates to a need for keeping pace
with the trainings to be deployed and
developed on a regular basis. Without
these methodologies it would be rather
difficult for an engineer to cater to the
specifications shared by their customers.
To encourage this transfer of knowledge
to the engineers in India, Faurecia has
developed the IEA. A team of trainers
contributes to the IEA trainers’ pool with
specific Key Performance Indicators on
Faurecia’s methodologies which in-turn
help technical managers in imparting this
knowledge to the next level in a cascading
manner.
through the “root cause” analysis. The
final objective is to set-up a practice where
employees do not make the same mistake
twice, with the main objective to implement
a self-corrective behavior.
Develop and conduct the GET
All new recruits go through a unique
training program called Graduate Trainee
Engineer program (GET). The unique
Deployment of technical trainings
The core objective of IEA is the deployment
of technical expertise in the form of trainings
to their engineers. These training courses,
specific to the needs of Faurecia, are not
commonly available in the Indian market
which makes it even more important for
IEA trainers to act as key players in the
deployment of these technical trainings.
Initiate and Support knowledge sharing /
Encourage lessons learnt
Each one at Faurecia is encouraged
to learn from their mistakes since it is
imperative for their growth. One of the
major
“Organizational
Development”
initiatives driven by Faurecia is ‘Lessons
Learnt’. The process is quite simple “where
one is encouraged to find a solution to the
problem” driven by learning & discovering
success indicator for this program has
been “Effective Campus Recruitment”,
“Comprehensive Training Program” and
“Employee Engagement”, which in turn
develops these young graduates into
successful professionals at Faurecia.
The GET Training majorly includes the
following categories: software training,
domain training (for component and
assembly design of Interior, Exterior and
Seating systems), soft-skills training,
business communication & interpersonal
skills training, “on-the-job” training and
mentoring.

promising products are selected, so as to offer
a customized solution that is tailored to each
customer’s needs.
Faurecia Automotive Seating
Faurecia Automotive Seating (FAS) is the
world’s largest supplier of seat mechanisms
and frames and the third largest supplier
of complete seat systems. Specializing in
the architecture of seating, Faurecia is an
expert at designing and manufacturing
every seat component: frames, tracks,
adjustment mechanisms, foam and covers.
Faurecia seamlessly assembles the different
components to create a complete seat
and guarantees just-in-time delivery to its
customers’ plants.
Accounting for 5% of a vehicle’s total cost,
seating is the second largest expense for
automakers, after the engine. It makes up
nearly 6% of a vehicle’s total weight. The
challenge lies in standardizing the non-visible
components (i.e. the metal frame) while
devising a distinctive design for the complete
seat that is visible to the end user, all while
enhancing the safety, comfort and benefits
provided to customers.
Faurecia Automotive Seating boasts expertise
in the full range of critical technology used
in automotive seating, operating a global
manufacturing and R&D network (2,000

their markets.
Faurecia TechCenter • Pune
11
Three factors have proven key to ensuring the
success of Faurecia seat frames: expertise
in global platforms, weight reduction (via
hybrid metal/composite solutions), and
mechatronics (used to provide electronically
operated advanced functions). In the market
for complete seat systems, the ability to
provide just-in-time delivery and the added
value offered by advanced features (pneumatic
systems, climate control and electronic seat
management) drive the innovation process.
To stay abreast of market trends, Faurecia
Automotive Seating is gradually shifting the
geographical distribution of its operations.
By 2015, 50% of its business will come from
Europe, 25% from Asia and 25% from North
and South America. Asia, and especially
China, offers the greatest potential for
growth, as Faurecia continues to lend support
to international customers and expands
opportunities with Chinese automakers.
Faurecia
Automotive Exteriors
Faurecia is Europe’s top provider of exterior
automotive equipment, holding 28% of the
market for automotive bumpers, and is ranked
second worldwide. Today, the Business Group
is seeing steady growth at the international
level. Faurecia Automotive Exteriors offers a
diversified range of body parts and modules
made from plastic and composite materials.
As the needs of automakers become steadily
more complex, Faurecia is developing a
modular strategy (front ends, bumpers,
shock absorber systems) designed to provide
functional integration, weight reduction,
quality management, shorter assembly times
and lower costs.
After focusing for many years on Europe,
Faurecia Automotive Exteriors is accelerating
its move into other world markets, primarily

R&D and Engineering
R&D and Innovation
Research
and
Development
(R&D)
represents a strategic challenge for
Faurecia. It is the starting point for the
Group’s innovative product and process
creations and for future customer
applications. R&D activities are structured
around two main divisions:
the Research and Innovation Unit,
which covers upstream activities prior
to program acquisitions. This Unit is
critical to enabling the Group to provide an
appealing and competitive offering to its
customers, which it achieves by designing
new products and processes, proposing
innovative solutions and developing generic
products and processes;
the Program Engineering Unit,
which covers customer specific vehicle
programs. It is a downstream unit
responsible for ensuring that programs are
completed within the set timeframes and
in compliance with the required cost and
quality levels.
R&D accounted for 5% of sales in 2011. €100
million alone was spent on innovation over the
same period. 5,000 engineers and technicians
based at 41 centers across the globe represent
the Group’s R&D community, which filed 300
patents in 2011.
Technological development and innovation
are key priorities for Faurecia. Technological
development continued to accelerate in 2011,
supported by a strong focus on academia.
Faurecia signed strategic partnership
agreements with universities in the form of
contracts or chairs as well as investing in
technological research institutes.
Faurecia TechCenter • Pune

Faurecia also deployed its skills management
policy by means of an ambitious plan with
rigorous monitoring requirements. 272
experts are now skilled in 20 categories of
expertise within the Group’s 60 different areas
of expertise. Skills’ sharing, wherever relevant,
ensures optimal use of such expertise. The
Company is forecasting this community of
experts to be expanded to include more than
400 experts by 2015.
The General Management of the Company
is committed to technology and innovation,
believing these to be key drivers of its on-going
and future success.
The acceleration in model and platform
globalization has made the standardized
solutions offered by Faurecia increasingly
attractive. Deployed throughout the production
and development process, this approach
optimizes costs and reduces lead times.
In order to meet the needs of this global
configuration, Faurecia has put specific
development structures in place:
• skills centers bring together development
resources from each of the platform product
lines;
• client development centers nearest
the carmakers, responsible for specific
applications;
• shared resources platforms capable of
making design and calculation workloads
for all applications more flexible.
In 2011, investment in innovation continued
and was focused on areas that are key
to the Company’s competitiveness such
as environmental performance, product
attractiveness, the system approach and the
optimization of manufacturing processes,
including the logistics which have consolidated
Faurecia’s leadership in its quest for excellence.
The activities of Faurecia’s R&D and Innovation
teams are centered on eight key areas: weight

Engineering & Program
management
This new approach involves the foregoing
elements plus:
• system audits of the program deliverables
Carrying out vehicle innovation and application
projects calls for an engineering organization
and program that are highly reliable and
effective. Faurecia is organized in a way that
meets both these requirements.
Engineering
As of today, Faurecia operates 41 R&D Centers
around the world. Each business group’s
Research and Development is spread across
our three main geographic areas — Europe,
the Americas and Asia. It is managed as a
separate entity and possesses all the resources
necessary to carry out the projects which it is
assigned. Since it is structured as a network,
it can run worldwide programs and commit as
many of its resources as are needed through
its worldwide workforce, or commit the right
quality of resources needed through its roster
of experts, particularly for vehicle innovation or
application projects.
to ensure the consistency of applications;
• and performance indicators, reviewed
monthly, to signal future risks.
These various tools have made it possible
to significantly improve such programs’
performance in terms of quality, schedule
and mass production launch. At the end of
2011, 538 programs run by 320 Program
Managers were under development. Some
are of global scale, from initial drawings to
final manufacture.
Project management
Vehicle application programs follow a unique
process, bringing together all the participants
needed to develop and launch a new, massproduced product. This process, known
as PMS (Program Management System),
describes all the deliverables to be produced
at each phase of the program. Every program
is given periodic interim reviews, first by
specialists and then at the close of each
phase by management, so that its progress
