From the Pastor’s Heart, through His Keyboard
The other week, I made a huge decision. It was time to go through my library and
weed out books that I thought I should eliminate. For those of you who know me
well, you understand that I am a self-confessed book-aholic. It is so hard for me to
get rid of any of my books, but the time is right. So far I have weeded out around
fifty books!

One of the books I scanned on my shelves was one written by a former colleague of
mine. The Rev. Randy Hammer who was pastor of the First Congregational Church
in Albany, NY when I first met him. He had just moved up from Tennessee with his
wife Mary Lou. She became the director of the newly founded Capitol Region
Theological Center, Randy pastored the church. Before moving to Albany, Randy
was pastor to Jim and Kaye Smith and their children, Ruth and James. It really is a
small world!
The book is titled “52 Ways to Ignite Your Congregation … Practical Hospitality.” It
was the first in a series by various authors on ways to fire up a congregation and
increase various types of activities. Other titles include “52 Ways to Ignite Your
Congregation … Bible Study, Worship, Generous Giving, and Youth Ministry.”
In his book on Practical Hospitality, Randy’s very first suggestion was that churches
understand their purpose. He suggests that the primary purpose of the church is to
understand transformation and to bring it about in the lives of our members, the
faith community, the community around us, and the world at large.
This is not just the “job” of the pastor but of every member of the church. To help
people change their lives by following the teachings of Jesus Christ and putting
them to use in our daily lives.
One thing that helps us to accomplish this is having a clear and concise purpose or
Mission Statement. A sentence of two at the most that every member can memorize
and share with people we come into contact with. Randy suggests that the purpose
statement should be posted throughout the building(s), it should be publicized and
printed in newsletters and bulletins. He goes on to suggest that everything that a
church does should be tested against that purpose statement.
Do you know Falmouth Congregational Church UCC’s purpose/mission statement?
If not, do you know where to find it?
Let us continue to show God’s radical hospitality to those who choose to worship
with us, the new-comers as well as those who have been “regulars” for years. Let
us bring God’s radical love to this wider community through our outreach and
caring, in Christ’s name and for His sake.

COUNCIL CORNER FOR MAY
•
The Future Pastoral Leadership committee has made its recommendations to the Council
and we will be holding a special CHURCH WIDE MEETING following the service on May 15
to review these recommendations. We will be taking further input from the congregation at
this time and then VOTE on a final motion as to the direction we, as a church, wish to take.
This is an IMPORTANT MEETING and we encourage everyone to be there and participate.
•
We are pleased to announce that Kristen Coleman has accepted an offer to be our Christian
Education Coordinator beginning in May. She will finish out the Kids’ Church year
before preparing for some new programs in the fall. We were very impressed during her
interview with her enthusiasm and ideas for the church school program. More to follow!!
•
The Second Wave Campaign has closed. We received over $12,000 in additional pledges
which, combined with the generous match from several members, will certainly help our
finances for the year.
•
Watch for information about a program in the fall on "Christianity and Islam. So Close but
Yet So Far Away." This should be an interesting and worthwhile program given the
world we live in today.

KIDS’ CHURCH!
With dedicated volunteers and leadership from the Ministry of Christian Education,
we continue to offer a fun, interactive, Bible story based curriculum on Sunday
mornings. We would like to thank the volunteers who have helped with the program
thus far. We are looking for teachers for May so check your planners and sign up to
help in Fellowship Hall.
Kids’ Church Singers Update
Our Kids’ Church Singers will perform again on Sunday, May 1. The children will practice the
song during Kids’ Church to be ready to perform during the service. If there aren’t many children then we may have the congregation sing along with us. We intend to be flexible so the
children feel comfortable but also share their wonderful voices.
Graduate Recognition Sunday will be on Sunday, May 22 if you know of a graduating senior
from either high school or college who would like to be recognized during the service please
email Kim Hendry at [email protected].
Children’s Sunday – the final Sunday for Kids’ Church for this school year will be on June 12.
We are planning a service which will almost entirely be run by the children. So they’ll be ushering, acolyting, singing, doing readings, collecting the offering, etc. Please mark this on your calendar. It is sure to be a very special service and we would like to have as many children/young
adults participate as possible.
GRADUATE RECOGNITION
Graduate Recognition Sunday will be on Sunday, May 22. We invite graduating seniors to participate in the service. There will be a special Coffee Hour following worship to honor the graduates.
Please contact Gini in the church office with the name, placing graduating from and future
plans of your high school or college senior at [email protected] or 781.3413. Thanks!

Prayer Shawl Ministry
On a Lovely spring afternoon we had five knitters who were able to come to
our Prayer Shawl Ministry meeting in April. We opened our meeting with a
prayer written by Donna K. Manocchio, which I found in my “The New Prayer
Companion” written by Janet Bristow and Victoria Gala, who founded the
Prayer Shawl Ministry with 35 knitted patterns in it. Donna also wrote a wonderful article about
how she was inspired by this ministry. She tried knitting but found out it took too much time, effort and patience. It turns out she became a pastor and has delivered many shawls to people in
homes and hospitals, rehab centers and recovery meetings, parks and prisons. She found another way to partner with this ministry.
As the group was knitting I shared a funny story from “At Knit’s End” a book about meditations
from women who knit too much. A real estate friend sent me a story about “How Heavy is This
Glass of Water.” Then I read a nice thank you note from Melodie Gage.
Finally I shared the wonderful print out titled “The Health Benefits of Knitting,” which Phoebe
Horne had sent to me. We closed our meeting by blessing three new beautiful prayer shawls.
We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting, May 12 at 1:30 PM in the Grant Room.
Happy Mother’s Day!

Dear Friends at FCC,
Thank you for all the kindnesses extended to me during my illness. Just knowing that all of you are collectively praying for me as well as sending me cards and
good wishes brings me such hope. During the recent
cloudy days and cold weather, my prayer shawl has
kept me nicely warm and cozy. You are the best support system a Faith Community Nurse could possibly
have!

Dear Church Family,
Here I am writing again, to thank you for my special
visitors I had at Easter time. They are so welcome
every year. They brought flowers, jonquils and a
book of poetry. It’s so nice to be remembered by old
friends, Helen Tupper Southard and Kathleen Henderson. We had quite a gab fest. A real special time.
Thank you very much.
Dear Church Family,
Thank you so very much for your
thoughtfulness in sending me flowers,
cards and prayers.

Ministry of Community Life
Welcome to an update from the Ministry of Community Life.
In review I have placed the chart which illustrates the
scope and mission of MCL. We provide hospitality
and fellowship for the congregation and we promote
the health and well being of the community. We last
met on January 27 and since then we have continued to communicate via email, person-to–person
conversations and phone chats. Plans are to resume
meeting at church in late summer. Meanwhile we
continue to follow through with the goals which we
set to accomplish at the January planning session.
So here goes…there is a little something for everyone!
GRADUATION SUNDAY IS MAY 22, 2106
We are currently making plans to provide the hospitality for this important milestone which our
young people and perhaps even a non-tradition student member of our congregation have
achieved. Please remember to contact the office with their names. Then come out on this special Sunday and join the hospitality and fellowship after the service. The future of our church
lies in our youth!
HAPPENINGS FOR OUR SENIOR CITIZENS
The pictured publications are out there on the
shelves or racks at our library, super markets, drug
stores, health centers for the taking. Next time you
shop pick these up. Senior News is published by
the Southern Maine Agency on Aging. Senior
Source Book is full of a wealth of information. There is a page to record your health history,
prescriptions and a wealth of information on the legal, financial, and community services offered to the Senior Citizen. Last but not least we are prime targets for the awful SCAMS. I am
in hopes of ordering a supply of this pamphlet for FCC distribution. Hopefully the other two publications will also find their place in Fellowship Hall so our mobile parishioners can pick one up
for a senior neighbor or friend to read.
NEWS FROM THE SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE OF FALMOUTH
Since at this time the Seniors are no longer meeting as in the past, the Ministry of Community
Life wishes to share news about what is happening around the Town of Falmouth to make life
and “aging in place” better for our seniors. We appreciate them and salute them for helping to
make our town what it is today.
Over at the Motz Activity Center plans are being developed to see a “Senior Citizen Center”
(Continued on page 11)

(Continued from page 10)
born by the end of the year. A kitchen needs to be created and a meeting room renovated and
furnished that is specific to needs of a Senior Activity Center! This committee is also looking at
ways to provide transportation, to achieve an “aging in place” methodology, affordable senior
housing. There is money in the next year’s budget allocated to hire a Senior Citizen Coordinator
to help seniors navigate the health care system as well as planning to make the best possible
use of the new center.
Do you know that on week days you can go over to Motz and walk during the mornings from 9
AM to noon? Monthly programs are planned for seniors to enjoy via Community Programs.
NEWS FROM THE FAITH COMMUNITY NURSE
National Nurses Week is May 6 – 12:
This year’s theme is, Culture of Safety: It
starts with you. Let us pay tribute to the nurses in our congregation and to those practicing
throughout our world. As Christians nurses
have a Culture of Safety in God as our refuge
and strength. Do remember to go out and hug
a nurse from May 6 to May 12!
Upcoming plans from the Faith Community Nurse
Beginning next month I have planned a series of articles
about the fact that the rate of diabetes in the U.S. has
quadrupled in the last three decades. Americans are
simply consuming too much sugar! Moreover our incidence of obesity is skyrocketing. So let’s practice reading
the labels on what we pick up at the market. Pay close attention to number 3 and 4. Try to avoid adding extra sugar. Keep the sugar low at 3 grams and the fats to less
than 5 grams. Look at total carbohydrate. If it’s above 21
grams, rethink your purchase.
Do come along with me on a journey to eating healthier.
