If you are seeking
a job, you need to do
your homework
on companies you are
considering working for
before you walk in the
door for an interview.
For instance,
check out the financial
news and other sources
to learn if any analyst
called into question
the company’s
operating and/or
accounting procedures.
At issue:
Employer
credibility
By JOHN CHALLENGER
SPECIAL TO NORTH JERSEY JOBS
J
ust as investors are scrutinizing the
finances of companies before buying
stocks, job seekers may also be forced
to look at potential employers more closely.
The extra scrutiny could slow the employment search but job seekers — and many
employed workers — might want to take steps
to avoid the fate of employees whose companies went under, who lost both jobs and retirement savings when their companies unraveled.
Employer credibility is likely to be a crucial
asset in attracting and retaining talented
workers in the coming months, as companies
position themselves for growth in a recovering economy.
Many workers are taking a closer look
at their employers and potential employers
to determine if they are next. For job seekers,
investigating a company’s credibility can be a
difficult task. Asking questions in early-round
interviews could be perceived as inappropriate or otherwise place the interviewer in an
uncomfortable position, ending the process
right there.
However, the dilemma facing job seekers
could be turned to an advantage by proactive
companies that are willing to alter their hiring
process and take measures to establish credibility promptly with job candidates.
Building a solid reputation with job seekers
would have long-lasting benefits, particularly
when the economy resumes running on all
cylinders and it becomes more competitive
to find the most qualified workers.
Some companies may consider providing
the employee handbook and recent reports to
stockholders to candidates early in the interview process. Establishing such an open book
policy would send a strong message to existing
2 . 5 . 1 2
workers as well as prospective employees that
the company can be trusted and stands behind
its reputation, policies and standards.
Even if companies do take the initiative in
establishing credibility, job seekers and workers would be well advised to examine more
closely the operations and policies companies
maintain in order to avoid future Enrons.
The following advice is for job seekers
as well as employees on ways to spot trouble
and protect their assets:
as if you had not survived. More cuts could
follow and it is better to be financially
prepared going into a jobless situation.
Additionally, downsizing often precedes
other cutbacks that could reduce or eliminate bonuses, pay raises, 401(k) matching
contributions and health insurance.
If Become Unemployed
(Ex-employees of Tainted Companies)
ä Try to get the interview without a
résumé. Get in the door using network
of contacts. Have a copy of your résumé
for the interview, but hold onto it until
requested.
ä Throughout the job search process,
but especially in the interview, do not try
to hide the fact that you worked for a particular company with a poor reputation.
Most hiring authorities understand that
most employees, particularly rank-and-file
workers, are far removed from the level
where wrongdoing is most likely to originate. An unwillingness to name the former
employer could give the impression that
you have something to hide.
ä While it is important that you not hide
the identity of your former employer, you
may want to de-emphasize the connection
to your former employer by focusing
solely on your attributes. Instead of saying,
“At XYZ Company, I was responsible for ...”
use phrases like, “As a marketing manager,
I was responsible for ... “
Before Being Hired (Job Seekers)
ä Look for news of regulatory inquiries
or investigations and ask interviewer what
they are all about.
ä Check the financial news and other
sources to learn if any analysts or outside
parties called into question the company’s
operating and/or accounting procedures.
ä Examine quarterly reports to investors.
One sign that there may be trouble is if the
accounting firm that reviews the company’s
financial data changes frequently.
ä If there is a reason to be skittish,
consider asking for an employment contract.
After Becoming Employed (Current Workers)
ä Make sure your 401(k) retirement
savings plan is diversified — do not invest
more than four percent of your 401(k)
contributions in your company stock.
ä Watch to see if the chief executive
officer and other top-level executives
suddenly begin selling large shares of their
own company stock. Such insider transactions by top management are routinely
reported in The Wall Street Journal
and are available from the Securities &
Exchange Commission.
ä If you survive a round of layoffs, draw
up a financial plan for you and your family

ROI
(Return On Internships)
L
et’s talk ROI. Hardly a person exists who doesn’t recognize
that famous three-letter acronym, which stands for,
of course, return on investment. We think of it in terms
of stocks, home purchases, business expenditures, mega-salaries
paid to athletes, results over time, and virtually everything else we
evaluate. ROI is, simply, one of those universalisms.
But let’s talk a different ROI, and let’s talk directly to college
freshmen and sophomores as well as their parents, teachers, mentors, career counselors, and anyone else who helps them make
decisions. The “I” we’re talking about is not investment per se, but
internships and the value to your career, especially the beginning
of it, of finding an internship that gives you direct and relevant
experience in the field you are entering — before you enter that
field. Under that umbrella, we’ll look at two contributing factors:
paid vs. unpaid internships, and having two internships
(after sophomore year and after junior year) rather than one.
So in a sense, we really are talking about investment; in this
case, it’s investment of time.
Getting an internship is not a foreign idea to most young people,
although I’m constantly amazed at how many I see who have just
come out of college without one. Believe me, they are at a disadvantage in the job market. However, it goes deeper than that.
According to a recent survey conducted by the National
Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), paid, not unpaid,
internships correlate to job-search success. Their report states,
“Class of 2011 graduates who took part in a paid internship were
more likely to get a job offer, have a job in hand by the time they
graduated, and receive a higher starting salary offer than their
peers who undertook an unpaid internship or no internship at all.”
Specifically regarding the aspect of pay, the study found that 61
percent of 2011 graduates who had had paid internships in the forprofit sector received job offers. That compares to approximately
33 percent of all graduates who had job offers on graduation day
(according to previous reports).
It also found “that paid interns who became full-time
employees had higher average starting salary offers than their
peers who took part in unpaid internships.” Further, “The intern’s
duties appear to be the key to the difference in why paid internships translated into better job-search performance. Paid interns
reported spending more time on ‘professional’ duties and therefore appeared to gain more of the ‘real’ experience that appeals
to employers than unpaid interns, who spent more time on
clerical activities.”
So, are college students listening to this? Some are. Of the
20,000 graduating seniors who took part in the NACE survey,
52.5 percent had an internship at some point during their college

years, and 52
percent of those

Therefore —
regarding factor
number one — get a
paid internship.
Now comes the
second issue: How
do students who had
two internships — after
both their sophomore and junior years —
do compared to those who had one visa-vis securing jobs at or before graduation? I spoke to Mimi Collins, director
of Communications for NACE, to see if
they had data on that. They don’t; their
studies haven’t addressed this question,
so I’m going to put in my two cents.
Absent any study on my part (couldn’t find anyone else either), I gave a lot
of thought to the minions of 20-something college graduates I have coached
in my practice, especially in the last five
years since the economy started heading south. Without data but with strong
conviction, I tell you that those with two
internships (paid or not) fared far better
than those with just one. Since my
conclusion is based only on observation,
reflection, and intuition, you can take it
for what you think it’s worth, but I see a
strong correlation, maybe even a direct
cause and effect.
The message today is simple: the
summer after your freshman year is

Receptionists
and Information
Clerks
By CHRIS BRUNE
SPECIAL TO NORTH JERSEY JOBS
What They Do
Receptionists and information clerks are
charged with a responsibility that may affect the
success of an organization: making a good first
impression. Typical tasks include:
ä Answering telephones, routing and
screening calls (this despite the widespread
use of automated answering systems
or voice mail)
ä Greeting visitors, responding to inquiries
from the public, and providing information
about the organization
ä In some cases, coordinating all mail into
and out of the office
ä Monitoring visitors’ access for security
purposes
ä When not busy with callers, assisting other
administrative employees
ä Updating appointment calendars, preparing
travel vouchers, and performing basic
bookkeeping, word processing, and filing
Specific responsibilities vary with the type of
organization.
PHOTO COURTESY OF METRO CREATIVE GRAPHICS
Demand for receptionists and information
clerks is expected to grow by 15 percent
through 2018, faster than the average for all
occupations.
Outlook
Demand for receptionists and information
clerks is expected to grow by 15 percent through
2018, faster than the average for all occupations.
Employment Projection, Receptionists
and Information Clerks
2008: 1,139,200
2018 projection: 1,312,100
Numeric change: + 172,900
Percent change: + 15 percent
Qualifications
Receptionists and information clerks generally
need a high school diploma or equivalent as most
of their training is received on the job. However,
employers often look for applicants who already
possess certain skills, such as knowledge
of spreadsheet and word processing software
or telephone systems. Some employers also may
prefer some formal office education or training.
Source: National Employment Matrix
Drivers / Trends
ä Increase in demand will be driven
by growth in industries such as health care,
legal services, personal care services,
construction, and management and technical
consulting.
ä Receptionists and information clerks
perform many tasks that are interpersonal
in nature and are not easily automated,
ensuring continued demand for their services
in a variety of establishments.
ä While automation has reduced the need
for receptionists, other technology has caused
a consolidation of clerical responsibilities
and growing demand for workers with diverse
clerical and technical skills.
ä Good interpersonal skills are critical.
What They Make
Median hourly wages of receptionists
and information clerks in May 2008 were $11.80
with a range from $8.09 to $17.07.
Where They Work
In 2008, the healthcare and social assistance
industries — including offices of physicians,
hospitals, nursing homes, and outpatient care
facilities — employed about 36 percent of all
receptionists and information clerks. The wholesale, retail, personal services, educational
services, finance and insurance, employment
services, religious organizations, and real estate
industries also employed large numbers of receptionists and information clerks.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 53,380
receptionists and information clerks employed
in the New York-White Plains-Wayne, NY-NJ MSA
(includes Bergen and Passaic counties) in 2010.

Earn a degree with ‘distance learning’ at Caldwell College
Learn how at session
scheduled for March 22
A
long with a new year is a new opportunity to
recharge, research and rekindle the inspiration
needed to tackle career challenges in 2012. It’s
time to gain momentum in your career with the help
of innovative educational opportunities.
The pressures from job searches and career
advancement can take a toll one’s body, mind and
spirit. Exercise and healthy eating top the list of
recharging “must-do’s.” Getting unplugged also
helps the process. Consider putting your cell phone
away and taking a walk in the woods, spending a
few hours with a good book or simply starting 2012
with a daily journal — clearing the mind can do wonders for planning the path to a new career.
Finally, it is time to research career options and
rekindle the spark you once had regarding your
life’s work. According to CNN Money, some of
America’s best jobs are ones that offer great pay,
satisfaction, and big growth opportunities. They
include software architect, management consultant
and accountant.
Have you considered a career in a high-growth
employment sector such as software developer,
physical therapist or marketing specialist? If you’re
leaving the military, you might want to choose
a career in criminal justice, teaching or business
administration. If you’re a teacher, you might want
to enhance your degree with a specialization.
According to U.S. News and World Report, special
education ranks among the best careers for strong
growth in the next decade. The research suggests
jobs in special education will jump 17 percent in the
next five years.
Finding a new career often requires completing
or earning a new degree. Adding new credentials
to your résumé offers a new array of opportunity
and flexibility when positioning yourself for a
strategic move. Begin this process by speaking with
experts. Caldwell College offers students academic
advisement that will link your employment aspirations with flexible class schedules and financial-aid
opportunities.

At Caldwell College, students have the choice of attending classes on campus, or enrolling in one of the
many distance learning options, especially appealing to working adults.
Distance Learning is a great way to approach
education on your terms and offers the opportunity
to fit earning a degree into your busy schedule.
Caldwell College is sensitive to the needs of
working adults and has developed many distance
learning options. Todd Mitchell, a physical therapist,
recently completed the online Supervisor
Certification in less then one year and has already
applied for a new supervisory position that
required the certification.
“The Supervisor Certification online classes were
convenient for me because I have a family. Caldwell
College’s course schedule offered lots of flexibility,”
said Mitchell. Through advisement, Mitchell was
able to map out a class structure that worked with
his career path and family life. He plans to continue
with the online Principal Certification and ultimately
a master’s degree from Caldwell College.
Online course offerings are interactive, studentcentered, and taught by highly qualified, experienced faculty. Caldwell College’s online undergraduate programs include:
ä Business Administration
ä Criminal Justice
ä Psychology
Graduate online offerings include:
ä M.A. in Educational Administration
ä Post-Master’s Principal Certification
ä Post-Master’s Supervisor Certification
Distance Learning is another option to provide a
way to obtain the same Caldwell College educational experience by participating online via a learning
management system, along with scheduled phone
or personal visits with professors. Students can
choose from more than 20 majors with distance
learning classes offered each semester. Visit caldwell.edu/distance to learn more.
Those students who can take classes on the
Caldwell College campus will find a serene setting,
and plenty of parking to allow for quick walks to
class. The campus offers a safe and secure atmosphere, and adult students often plan their day so
they can visit the fitness center or running track
before class or grab a snack at the newly designed
Dining Hall, located in the Student Center.
Caldwell College offers professional programs in
the areas of nursing, business, education, communications arts, computer science, criminal justice,
psychology, applied behavior analysis and more.
Certifications are offered for School Nurse,
Teacher of Health, Teacher Education and Teacher
of Students with Disabilities. Post-masters in
School Counseling, Special Education, and
Supervisor and Principal Certificates are also available. Health Affiliation Programs offer a great start
to careers in dentistry, occupational therapy, podiatry, optometry and more. Class sizes are small,
which provides an intimate environment for
learning. Visit caldwell.edu/courseofferings for
a complete list of their 29 undergraduate and 23
graduate programs and certificates.
Caldwell College has the second lowest tuition
among private colleges in New Jersey, which
shows its commitment to keeping higher education
affordable.
March 22 is Caldwell College’s next information
session. During admissions events you will have the
opportunity to speak with an advisor, learn about
financial aid and assistance programs, and register
for classes.
RSVP for a Caldwell College admissions event
by visiting caldwell.edu. Caldwell College is a yellowribbon friendly campus.
