John Schmitt President & CEO Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce
Nestled within the western suburbs of Chicago, Naperville is an area of distinction. Naperville’s evolution from a
small community to a leading center of economic progress, community achievement and recognition is
attributable to numerous things.
Naperville is a perfect location for you to establish a family, entertain friends and visitors or operate a business.
Located in the center of Chicago’s diverse western suburbs, the Naperville area stands out as a leading
community that has a great balance of small, hometown values, historic preservation and forward-thinking
economic development.
The Naperville area is an award-winning, family-oriented community of approximately 145,000 residents. It has
earned high marks from various resources over the past several years, including being ranked in the top five best
places to live by Money magazine three out of the past six years.
Naperville’s highly rated education systems, award winning parks and recreation system and nationally
recognized public library system has provided the community with a solid foundation of excellence that guides
development and growth in the twenty-first century.
Remnants of the city’s past, such as its historic district and Naper Settlement, sit side-by-side with modern
business development and a rejuvenated downtown bursting with shops, restaurants and entertainment.
The City of Naperville is the oldest community in DuPage County, having been settled by Joseph Naper, its
namesake, in 1831. The community was linked to the big City of Chicago via rail by 1851, welcomed North
Central College in 1861 and 150 years later is an economically competitive and dynamic community.
Over the years, Naperville remained a quiet, small town, until the community was linked with Chicagoland’s
major regional transportation infrastructure. The city’s population was 12,933 in 1960—a number that surged to
128,358 in 2000.
During the growth period, Naperville always balanced a growing population with economic development. The
northern portion of Naperville is home to several high-tech Fortune 500 companies and corporate campuses that
embody the entrepreneurship, innovation and business excellence in our community and nation.
From large companies to small, Naperville has something to offer everyone. Come and experience for yourself
all the wonderful facets that have made the Naperville area a community unlike any other in the Midwest.
The distinguished community of Naperville, Illinois is in the heart of Chicago’s western suburbs, just 28 miles
outside of the loop. Straddling both DuPage and Will counties, Naperville and its surrounding communities are
easily accessible via the region’s expansive transportation network of roadways, rail lines and airports.
Naperville’s visitors, businesses and residents have access to Interstates 88, which outlines its northern border,
Interstate 355, located just east of town, and connections to Interstates 80 and 55 are just minutes away.
Naperville also has direct access to a number of state and regional major thoroughfares.
Metra, Chicago’s commuter railroad service, provides access to Naperville’s businesses, residents and visitors at
two stations located in the Naperville area, the Route 59 station and the downtown Naperville station.
Metra provides commuter access and express trains to and from the City of Chicago along the BNSF Railway.
During peak times, Metra express service provides Naperville with a link to Chicago’s Union Station in 40
minutes or less, with a number of other travel options available. Three routes supplied through Amtrak regional
passenger rail service also serve the station.
Pace supplies convenient local bus service for those looking to reach area colleges, employment centers,
residential areas and shopping sites.
Travelers looking to reach regional, national and international destinations are afforded the commercial air
services of both O’Hare International and Midway International airports, both of which are located a short
distance from the community and offer several thousand flights daily from nearly every major world airline.
The DuPage Airport in West Chicago serves as a reliever airport by meeting the needs of the general aviation and
corporate flying community. The airport provides a 24-hour air traffic control tower, fuel and FBO services, as
well as hangars and tie-downs.
Clow Airport and Aero Estates both offer the flying community additional options.
Naperville offers businesses of every size and sector a competitive advantage. Businesses locating within
Naperville have access to a world-class labor pool, strategic location in the western suburbs, access to regional
transportation, world-class schools, competitive tax and utility rates—all of which contribute to Naperville’s
reputation as a location where employees desire to live and work.
This superior quality of life is enviable to surrounding areas, and has been instrumental in this western suburban
region’s continual residential and economic growth. Thousands of businesses currently play a part in the
prosperous economic vitality of the Naperville area.
Naperville is home to more than 5,000 employers that provide 65,000 jobs.
The range of business sizes and types is as diversified as it gets and includes industry and manufacturing, hightech research and development, medical, education, retail and more. The local business community proudly
houses a mix of Fortune 500 companies, medium-sized firms, small boutiques and a number of home-based
businesses.
Naperville was named the 29th “Best Places To Live and Launch” by Fortune Small Business Magazine in 2008
—the only Illinois community to make the list of 100.
The region continues to attract, retain and expand its business base, while simultaneously maintaining its quiet
suburban lifestyle. The economic sector is led by various organizations dedicated to promoting the area’s
business interests.
The City of Naperville has one of the lowest property tax rates in the Chicagoland region, low utility costs and
does not levy an additional sales tax.
Supporting the pro-business environment are entities such as the Naperville Development Partnership,
Downtown Naperville Alliance and the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce—a U.S. Chamber of Commerce
5-Star Accredited organization that is a recognized leading Chamber.
Working in partnership with elected officials, organizations like the Chamber are constantly advocating and
working on policies and opportunities that will provide an environment of economic growth and maintain the
high quality of life for Naperville and the region’s businesses and residents.
An example of this leadership was in 2010 when the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce took a leadership
role in the retention of Navistar, and their selection of Lisle, Illinois as the home for their new Global
Headquarters and Integrated Product Development Center. In total, the relocation will sustain 7,000 jobs within
the region and rejuvenate the I-88 High Tech Corridor.
The future certainly looks bright in the Naperville area. Take the time to research the exceptional qualities and
advantages of doing business in this affluent Chicagoland region.

A World-Class Library System For A World-Class City
For an unprecedented 10 years in a row, the Naperville Public Library earned the #1 ranking in the nationwide
scorecard issued this week by Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings.
Almost 8,000 libraries across the nation were part of this ranking. Only 10 libraries across America have made it
into all 10 editions, and Naperville is the only one to earn a ranking of #1 in all 10 editions. In this ranking
competition, Naperville’s Library outperforms Denver, CO, Columbus, OH, Salt Lake City, UT and Santa Clara,
CA.
The rankings focus on busyness and library efficiency. Libraries that have low costs per item checked out, a high
number of visits per capita and a high number of check-outs per staff member receive higher rankings. Hennen’s
American Public Library Rating Index (HAPLR) includes a weighting of 15 different factors.
The 2010 edition of HAPLR ratings is based on data published by the Institute of Museum and Library Services
(IMLS) in 2009. The data covers reports from libraries that were filed in 2008, primarily on 2007 activities.
Naperville’s #1 ranking is in the 100,000 to 250,000 population category.
From May 2009 to March 2010, the Naperville Public Library checked out more than 4.6 million items. The
library owns approximately 750,000 items and holdings include a diverse array of books, magazines, newspapers,
large type books, CDs, DVDs, videos, audio books and much more.
Membership is free to all residents of incorporated Naperville and library cards are available each of the three
full-service facilities in the Naperville Public Library System.
