The Legends – One of Saskatchewan’s
premiere golf facilities
By Jessica Buhler
Now in its fourth
year of operation, The
Legends is becoming
one of the premiere
facilities in the province.
“The reaction has been
tremendous,” says the
club’s General Manager
and Head Professional
Jody Dueck. “Everyone
that plays the course
absolutely
loves
it.
The course has been in
excellent shape every
year and most of the
golfing public say our
greens are the best in
the province. It has the
potential to be one
of the top courses in
Saskatchewan.”
Tucked nicely into The Legends subdivision in
the north end of Warman, just 10 minutes from
Saskatoon, The Legends’ magnificent 18 hole
layout is designed to test the experienced golfer
and accommodate the beginners too.
The championship calibre course has water
hazards on nine different holes. Sand traps, fescue
and a variety of tree types, along with hills and
valleys, makes the course an exciting and beautiful
place to play golf.
Five tee decks for each hole provide the golfer
with a choice in terms of length and difficulty. Rated
at 74.5 from the back tee by the Saskatchewan Golf
Association using the RCGA Rating/Slope System,
it’s the second highest in the province.
“We have a great practice area which includes
60
a huge practice green and chipping area with a
green side bunker,” says Dueck. “The driving range
features a large fairway practice bunker and tee
deck area which will allow for plenty of room for
people working on their game.”
All of The Legends’ power carts come with
windshields and the state of the art Visage GPS
system which tell you the proper yardages, keeps
score and orders food as well. For tournaments,
there is a live leader board function so you can
compare how well you are doing with the rest of
the competition. Rental pull carts and clubs are
also available.
They have green fee rates for seniors (60+),
students and juniors. Annual memberships and 10
game, 18 hole passes are also available. You can
play nine holes during the week and
after 2:00 pm on Saturday, Sunday and
holidays. The Legends offers specials
during twilight hours seven days a
week and non-holiday Mondays as
well.
After the last putt drops, you can
head up to the licenced Legends
Restaurant to relax and talk about
the ones that got away or those oncein-a-lifetime moments as you take in
the spectacular panoramic view of
the course.
If it’s meal time, The Legends
Restaurant has an impressive choice
of foods to choose from. “The

restaurant continues to
get busier,” Dueck says,
pointing out that there
were lots of private
functions held there
both during the season
and in the off season.
The Legends Golf
Club has a fully stocked
pro shop which carries
major brands such as
TaylorMade,
Adams,
Callaway and Adidas
along with Ashworth,
Travis Matthew, Puma
and Titleist.
The Legends Golf
Club also offers CPGA
individual and group
lessons for both juniors
and adults throughout
the season and can be
booked by calling the
pro shop.
The Legends will be hosting numerous
events and tournaments this year including the
Saskatchewan Mid-Amateur on August 19 to 21,
The Legends Open on July 5 and 6. There will also
be a Two Person Scramble May 31 and June 1 and
the Maple Leaf Junior Tour Championship will be
happening on August 23 and 24. Men’s and Ladies
nights continue to be on Wednesday and Tuesday
nights respectively.
The course is available to host private and public
events like family reunions, tournaments and staff
functions. They have assembled a staff that is very
capable of making sure everything goes well.

Wakaw Deep Woods RV Campground –
Your very own summer paradise
By Kate Kading
Our province is filled with endless possibilities for
campers. The landscape is a summer oasis that sinks
us deep into the relaxation of warmer weather,
family gatherings, quiet morning coffee on the deck
and a cold beverage at the barbecue in the evening.
Wakaw Deep Woods RV Campground is the place
to guarantee you the natural surroundings you
want with the conveniences you need. Experienced
campground developers Gary Jakeman and Bart
Zimmer feel they have found their niche, offering
RV enthusiasts the security of owning their own
recreational property at a low initial investment.
Jakeman says “Here you would have your one time,
upfront cost. Then it is your site, you own it. You
can come and go as you please. You can rent it, you
can lease it, you can will it, you can sell it, you can
leave your camper there year round and you never
have to worry about a reservation. It just eliminates
a lot of worry and concern about where you are
going to go camping. But it doesn’t mean you are
bound to that campsite. We have owners who are
still nomads and do other things but at least they
know they always have their campsite.”
Key pad entry security gates, excellent cell phone
coverage and WiFi, community garden spots and
individually metred 50 amp electrical service are
just a few of the conveniences of owning at Wakaw
Deep Woods RV Campground.

Wakaw Lake Regional Park
Wakaw Lake Regional Park is one of the busiest
regional parks in Saskatchewan. It is no wonder as
it is located within a one hour drive of one third of
the population of the province. It is a destination
location for those wanting a quick getaway or a
long-term stay.
From the beautiful scenic nine hole, challenging
golf course with its 3,300 square foot clubhouse,
featuring an 85 seat licenced restaurant and pro
shop, to the sandy beach area of Wakaw Lake, this
regional park is a must stay and play location.
The park is located approximately 15 kilometres
northeast of the Town of Wakaw (population of
1,000) and is accessed from Highway #2. Wakaw
Lake is a 14 mile narrow lake, which boasts good
fishing for Perch, Walleye and Northern Pike, along
with good boating, permitted launching and public
docks.
There are over 300 camping sites in the park. The
park has mini-golf, paddle boat rental and canoe
rental. A recreation program is available, as well as
rental of a gazebo for private functions. Catered
golf tournaments are welcome. A small concession
is located at the beach, which complements the
clubhouse restaurant, store and pro shop at the
golf course.
Surrounding attractions include the Geneva
Mission, the Anna Turnbull Memorial Hospital and
Wakaw Heritage Museum, which is the home of the
John Diefenbaker (Canada’s 13th prime minister)
Law Office, where he practiced between 1919 and
1925. Also nearby is the Batoche National Historic
Site, which centres on the Riel Rebellion of 1885.
Whether you are a seasoned camper, avid golfer,
fisherman or boater, Wakaw Lake Regional Park is
a must visit.

Memorial Lake Regional Park – your summer experience!
Memorial Lake Regional
Park is waiting for you at the
junction of Highway #3 and
#12, adjacent to the Village
of Shell Lake. Breathe in the
summer air – smell the spruce
trees! Relax on the beach with
your toes in the sand or spend
the day on the golf course with
green everywhere you can see.
Trees, grass, a flowing creek,
wooden bridges, wildlife and
more! Once you have been to
Memorial Lake Regional Park,
you will be planning to come
back.
The campground office is
gated and manned 24 hours
a day and security patrols
the park at night to ensure
the patrons have a safe
and
pleasurable
camping
experience. The campground is nestled in a forest
of pines, spruce and poplar with many species of
birds very eager to visit your site for goodies.
The park features wheelchair accessible, modern
washroom and shower facilities; two playgrounds
filled with slides, swings, spring toys, climbers,
dune buggies, play structures and more to keep
the little ones busy; a group camping area which
has a covered shelter and kitchen facility with a ball
diamond for your family gatherings.
A Red Cross aquatic program is held during the
month of July at the beautiful sand beach which
includes multiple docks in the buoyed swimming
area. Docking facilities for boats include an area
for mooring or a marina with rental slips. There is
a concrete boat ramp with dock and a fish filleting

Wakaw Deep Woods RV Campground –
Your very own summer paradise
(Continued from Page 62)
In a popular camping province like Saskatchewan,
sometimes finding a campsite on a busy weekend
can be a hassle and RV storage can be almost as
impossible. Jakeman and Zimmer have eliminated
these issues in grand style. The campground is just
1.5 kms south of Wakaw Lake and accommodates
even the largest, most modern recreational vehicles
with standard sites starting at 40 feet by 80 feet
and going up from there.
Wakaw Deep Woods RV Campground is ideal
whether you are a young family or on your way
to retirement. Jakeman says their clients are in all
stages of life and all have the same goal: Beautiful,
affordable holiday property with the amenities
and convenience of home. “We’ve completed
phase one and two. We have 25 sites in inventory,
they are ready for occupancy this spring. There
was a brand new playground built last fall and we
had WiFi services installed. It’s going good, we are
having fun.”
Jakeman says phases three and four are
64
slated to continue this summer and fall.
Not convinced yet? Wakaw Deep Woods RV
Campground is all about location. Jakeman’s
business partner Bart Zimmer says “We searched
at great lengths to find the ideal location to
be able to offer this affordable recreational
property for people.” Jakeman agrees that the
location will be appealing to many. “We are just 50
minutes from Saskatoon. We are close to Melfort
and Humboldt and we are only 40 minutes from
Prince Albert so location is key. You are out there
on a Friday night within an hour and your feet are
up, the barbecue is on and your cocktail is in your
hand. Then Sunday night, a lot of people stay and
just go in to work on Monday morning.”
Forget the rat race of booking your
annual camping trips and own your site. Bart
Zimmer and Gary Jakeman at Wakaw Deep
Woods RV Campground will set you up with a
lifetime of guaranteed relaxation. Visit www.

facility for your use. Water
skiers will find that they have
a separate launch point for
their use just down from the
mooring area.
The Village of Shell Lake
provides many other amenities
that you may need while
spending your summer with
us. A restaurant is steps away
from the campground gate and
retail stores just a walk or bike
ride away on Main Street. If a
member of your family doesn’t
camp – there are rental cabins
right nearby.
A new golf clubhouse was
constructed in 2013 which offers
inside seating as well as a large
deck with seating as well. The
clubhouse is licenced and offers
an appetizer menu. Tee times are recommended.
This is a resort course and is family friendly,
but can challenge the experienced golfer as well.
The 18 hole, par 71 course offers 6,002 yards of
fully irrigated grass greens and fairways for your
enjoyment.

Spend the summer perfecting your game
at Fairview Fairways
By Kate Kading
Every golfer dreams of finding that perfect spot
to build their skills and enjoy their surroundings at
the same time. You can do both at Fairview Fairways
southeast of Prince Albert. An educator by trade,
owner Pete Lukoni has over 52 years of experience
with the game as a golf pro and followed the
PGA Golf Tour in Canada for several summers. His
long-time associate Gord Hobson is a seasoned
pro instructor with the Canadian Professional Golf
Association and does most of the teaching.
This picturesque par three course will appeal to
beginners and dedicated enthusiasts equally and
Lukoni says it also accommodates busy schedules
or more leisurely weekends away. “One of the
niches we found we have is if people only have a
short time they can come out and play our course.
We also have the miniature golf available for the
kids and we get a lot of birthday parties and family
reunions out here. We have a barbecue area that is
free to use. There is really something for the whole
family.” Fairview Fairways has a driving range, fully
equipped pro shop, licenced clubhouse, beverage
cart and concession.
Lukoni says the course is laid out for another
nine holes if the population ever warrants it, but
for now they will continue to make improvements
to keep their guests happy. “We are going to be
extending some tee boxes this year. Most of the
par three golf courses are usually anywhere from
90 yards up to 180 yards. Ours is a little unique and
more challenging, we have three tee boxes every
hole so some of the holes are up to 290 yards. We
try to make it so you can use almost all of your clubs
in your bag. You have the choice; you can pick your
own poison so to speak.”
Fairview Fairways welcomes a lot of special
interest groups throughout the season including the
Special Olympics on Monday nights. Their weekly
game has been going on for over 10 years now.
Lukoni says that companies like to bring their staff
out for get togethers and team building purposes
and a lot of high schools in the surrounding area
come out to use the driving range.
Fairview Fairways likes to encourage the
younger generation to have an interest in golf and
welcomes families with special rates for juniors
including providing the clubs they need as they
grow.
Lukoni hopes the weather cooperates this year
for a quick start to the season for their guests. “Last
year’s wet weather was disappointing and we got
a really slow start. We are very pleased with the
clientele we get out every summer. We get a lot
of seniors and families and they enjoy being out
Fairview Fairways has a challenging mini golf too!
here.”
The course is open from sunrise to sunset,
reservations are encouraged and there is no limit
to how far ahead you can book. Fairview Fairways
has special rates for seniors, groups and families. To

Greenbryre Golf excited to offer new
and improved golf experience
By Jessica Buhler
Greenbryre Golf and Country Club is excited
to offer a new and improved golf experience.
Consisting of an outward six and an inward six,
the new 12 hole course will be surrounded by a
high-end real estate development. Individuals and
groups now have the option to play six, 12 or 18
holes, depending on their time restraints. This new
idea caters to those who have less time to step out
onto the course and play a round of golf.
The new 12 hole golf facility has been designed by
Garth Keays from Golf Shape, a local Saskatchewan
developer. Garth is very creative in his design to
give golfers a good test of golf which requires
accuracy and precision to his tiered greens. The
layout features five par 3’s, six par 4’s and one par
5 hole over 520 yards. The ponds and water basins
will come into play on eight of the 12 holes. One of
those holes will provide an aquatic practice facility
for the patrons to hit range balls. More than 120
trees have been moved and replanted to provide
shelter and maturity for the new 12 holes.
Membership has its rewards. The limited VIP
Membership will give you the opportunity to
purchase green fees at a reduced rate of 25 percent
off the regular rate for 2014 year, as well as a
complimentary $25 gift card for food and beverage
purchases, an option to purchase additional food
and beverage gift cards with added savings,
and charging privileges on individual green fee
purchases.
Part of the new Greenbryre experience is the
opportunity to call it home. The new layout will be
surrounded by 143 lots which are 1/2 to 3/4 acres
in size in what will be called “Greenbryre Estates”.
This exciting venture offers homeowners the
occasion to own residential walkout homes with
direct access to the golf course and country club.
Unique to western Canada, this development is a
70
new concept with amazing rewards.
If you are looking for a picturesque setting at
which to hold your special event, gathering or
tournament, Greenbryre’s Club 19 offers seating up
to 150 people, bar service, patio availability, a state
of the art sound system, as well as excellent food at
affordable prices.
The newly renovated 12 Grill Restaurant and
Lounge offers Saskatoon and area residents a
premier dining option. Receiving rave reviews, 12
Grill offers succulent entrees, juicy steaks, savoury
soups and wines to pair.
Lunch is served Monday to Saturday from 10:30
am to 2:00 pm, Sunday brunch is offered from 10:00

The Willows – 2013 CPGA Facility of the Year
By Jessica Buhler
Saskatchewan’s premiere public golf course
is a rolling dunes-style course structured around
22 beautiful lakes and 150 sand bunkers. Golfers
are treated to one beautiful scene after another
amongst its strategically placed trees, ponds and
bunkers.
The Willows is for everyone. Whether you are a
junior on the course for the first time, a beginner
seeking lessons or a seasoned golfer, The Willows
course challenges both novice and accomplished
golfers alike.
The driving range offers seven target greens
and a fairway practice bunker. The putting green
is perfect for warming up and fine tuning the
putter before a round, while their wildly contoured
practice green allows for fun and challenging
chipping and bunker practice. “We have great
practice facilities for golfers to improve their
game,” says Guy Beatty.
The golf course, which opens for golf at 6:00 am
each morning during the summer, has senior rates
for people 60 plus, early bird rates, junior rates and
twilight specials. Power carts, pull carts and club
rentals are also available. The Visage GPS system
on the Club Car, 140 unit cart fleet, gives instant
yardages to the pins, along with hole maps and pro
tips to help play each hole.
The Canadian Professional Golfers Association
of Saskatchewan named The Willows the Facility of
the Year in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. This is an
impressive “four-peat”, especially considering all
of the great competition from other quality golf
operations. The award was won previously in 2006.
“The Willows is the premiere tournament and
special event host facility in the province,” says
general manager Guy Beatty of his course that has
hosted four Canadian tour events, and numerous
provincial golf championships over the years.
“The banquet facilities, from casual barbecues
at The Red Barn, to elegant meals in one of our
spacious banquet rooms, are second to none. They
all come with an abundance of windows each
framing a spectacular view of the golf course, in all
four seasons.”
Whether it be for a wedding, special event,
team building seminar or convention The Willows
delivers. Only eight minutes from downtown, the
Willows offers an excellent alternative for business
meetings, with ample parking, fantastic menu
options and accommodating facilities plus the
great views of the course.
The “Il Salici Ristorante” offers “classic Italian
with a modern twist,” says Beatty, and is home
to a seasonally updated menu with many of the
same great Italian classics that have been enjoyed
over the past years, with a few new additions each
season. Il Salici Ristorante boasts spectacular views
72
from every seat and a warm, inviting atmosphere.
It’s the perfect setting to discover great Italian
food. You’ll enjoy authentic Italian dishes and
receive friendly, professional service.
Friday and Saturday nights feature Martin
Janovsky, an acclaimed composer and pianist,
providing the perfect atmosphere for that date
night or night out with friends with live piano
musings. Sunday brunch offers the opportunity
to spend time with family and friends in a pristine
setting. With the dining room and lounge open year
round, you can book a table online at willowsgolf.
com through Open Table.
The lunch menu is served from 11:00 am to 2:00
pm Monday to Saturday and its “fabulous” Sunday
brunch each week from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The
dinner menu is served from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Sunday to Thursday and 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm Friday
and Saturday throughout the summer. Breakfasts
are available in the lounge seven days a week.
“People sometimes come out here for a bite to
eat and a cocktail, to socialize or to just enjoy the
sunshine or beautiful sunsets settling over the golf
course at dusk,” says Beatty.
The Willows is home to one of the “top golf
shops in the county,” says Beatty, “offering top
lines, all the latest in equipment, apparel and
accessories in the industry.”
With a goal to provide the highest quality in
golf apparel at affordable prices, you’ll find the
latest fashions from Travis Matthew Golf Apparel,
UnderArmour, Oakley, Ecco, Sun Ice, Footjoy,
Adidas as well as premium lines of golf equipment
by Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade, and Ping, travel
gear and luggage by Projekt, along with many
other lines which can be personally fitted and
ordered on request.
