For more than eight decades, the International AirConditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo) has focused Jeff Schlichenmeyer on spotPublisher lighting the products, systems, technologies and ancillary services that define the ever-evolving HVACR industry. With annual participation nearing 2,000 yearly exhibitors and more than 60,000 attendees, AHR Expo has grown to become one of the most significant annual events for contractors from across the country. The 2016 AHR Expo, which will take place January 25 to 27 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, is expected to attract attendees from across the nation and around the globe, seeking the latest in HVACR equipment, technology and skill-building. Across the three-day Expo, the 2016 education schedule will include a mix of exhibitor new product and technology presentations, ASHRAE Learning Institute courses, certification exams, PM Live semi- nars and many free programs offered by endorsing associations and other groups. Each free session will last one or two hours, allowing attendees the opportunity to learn in a classroom setting while giving them plenty of time for visiting exhibits as well. Those who are more pressed for time will benefit from the shorter, 20-minute product and technology presentations. More than 50 free sessions will be offered, covering a range of topics. Attendees may participate in all AHR Expo-sponsored sessions, ASHRAE’s Design Build Track and sessions by endorsing associations and industry groups at no additional cost. In addition to the breadth of HVACR industry topics addressed by 2016’s free sessions, several paid programs are anticipated to be of notable value to attendees. Onsite review workshops and testing are available and include AABC Commissioning Group’s (ACG) Certified Commissioning Authorities (CxA) exam and North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification. Additionally, PMLIVE will be presenting two half-day seminars from renowned industry experts John Siegenthaler and Dan Holohan, covering the latest design concepts of hydronic heat pump systems and a lecture on “What Hydronics Taught Holohan”. Universal Technologies is a leader in the booming refrigerant leak repair industry for most sizes of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment under the AC Leak Freeze™ and AC Leak Freeze™ with Magic Frost brands. It also offers AC Leak Freeze™ R for smaller appliances. AC Leak Freeze is a nonpolymer formula that seals environmentally-damaging refrigerant leaks internally and doesn’t react to moisture or oxygen. Once applied with its industryunique injector system, AC Leak Freeze also remains in the system to seal future leaks as they occur, while also reducing component friction. The acquisition supplements RectorSeal’s expansive product line and complements its refrigerant service product category that includes, AcidAway®, Acid-Detector™ and Oil-ID™. “We had the opportunity to buy a company with a ‘best-in-class’ product, so we took advantage of it,” said Larry Kaiser, vice president--sales, RectorSeal, a portfolio company of publicly-traded CSW Industrials, Inc. (Nasdaq:CSWI), Dallas. Traditional HVAC/R wholesalers and contractors will experience a seamless, unnoticeable changeover when RectorSeal transitions to marketing, sales and customer support of AC Leak Freeze™ and its website, www.leakfreeze.com. Happy New Year! from TODAY’S A/C NEWS TODAY’S AC NEWS PO BOX 451821 Ft Lauderdale, FL 33345 PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID WEST PALM BEACH, FL PERMIT NO.4595 PAGE 2 TODAY’S AC & REFRIGERATION NEWS JANUARY 2016 JANUARY 2016 TODAY’S AC & REFRIGERATION NEWS Is a Bird in the Hand REALLY Worth Two in a Bush? Ruth King’s Contractors Cents I recently had a conversation with a former client who sold his business and started consulting. He quickly found out that even though he knew what needed to be done, expressed the benefits for making the changes to the contractor, many times the contractor didn’t make the changes. The contractor procrastinated. He was really frustrated. “Was I like that?” he asked me. Laughing, I said yes. Sometimes it took six months to make the changes that needed to get made. Then, when they were done most times the response was, “What took me so long?” Then we had a serious conversation. He said that most of the time, he knew what he had, even though he knew it was bad. It was “the bird in the hand.” He thought that the “two in the bush” could be a lot worse. He looked at the negative side of change rather than the positive side of change. The fear was the unknown could be a lot worse than the existing issue -even though those issues were causing bad morale, poor customer service, and a known “bad apple” employee who was causing major problems. It took serious conversations, and at times me forcing the change, to make it happen. And yes, I can be very persistent when necessary. If you have a “bad apple”: First, I’m not mean spirited enough to fire someone right before Christmas. I would wait until the New Year...knowing that person needed to go. Then ask yourself (or that employee’s manager) whether that employee is aware of the problem behavior? Have you spoken with him? Written him up? Give him an opportunity to change the behavior? If not, you CAN do that now - even though it is Christmastime. If you have written that person up and the issues have not gotten better, then on January 1, 2016 I would put an ad on www.Indeed.com (it’s free as of now) to look for that person’s replacement. Find that person’s replacement before letting him go whenever possible. However, it might be a totally intolerable situation and that person must go through my “career readjustment program” before you find his replacement. In this case, “Two in a Bush” is better than a “Bird in the Hand.” Next Topic: Three Marketing Ideas for 2016 Most of us don’t have enough time to write a detailed marketing plan in flowing prose. You just want a few ideas that work. Once you have those ideas just implement them and track results. These ideas, in their simple format, are your 2016 marketing plan. Here are a three ideas that have been successful for the contractors I work with. To see samples go to www.hvacroboticmarketing.com: 1. A “We Love our Customers” promotion in February for Valentine’s Day. Give customers a $25 (or other dollar amount) coupon good for any of your company’s services. Expiration date is December 31, 2016. You’ll be getting these coupons redeemed all year long. Track how many are redeemed and the dollars generated through their redemption. If you are like most contractors who I know use this promotion, the return on investment is more than 100% (ie you generate more than you spent on the promotion). Sending these coupons as a postcard is most effective - both from results and cost. Get them ordered in January and mailed to your customers February 1st. 2. A “July Fourth” patriotic, independence day promotion. Like the “We Love our Customers” promotion, this one isn’t used much. You might include a three coupons - all expire in 60 to 90 days. The coupons could be for service, a product, or a free product/service. Sending these coupons as a postcard is most effective - both in results and cost. Send them the last week of June. 3. A “We Want you Back” promotion. This is sent to all customers who have not done business with you in the past 18 months to five years. Give them an incentive to use your company again. A coupon for $25 dollars (or another amount) or a dollar amount off an equipment purchase, or a free product or service. Don’t be surprised when customers call saying, “I hadn’t heard from you and I thought you went out of business.” This promotion can be sent any time during the year. Generally you will send it in the busiest times PAGE 3 Industry expert Ruth King has helped contractors get and stay profitable for more than 25 years. Reach her at [email protected]. of the year - when former customers need your company’s services most. It’s the best time to get them to react, call, and spend money with your company. Manufacturers could produce product until that date. The policy statement also states that DOE will begin immediately investigating “the methods manufacturers are using to represent the efficiency of central air conditioners that do not have a highest sales volume combination.” This move would effectively eliminate the ability of manufacturers to produce “dry-charge R-22” heat pumps and central air-conditioners on or after February 1, 2016 unless a waiver is granted by DOE. In its policy statement DOE notes that not a single manufacturer has requested such a waiver. Further, DOE indicates that it will look unfavorably toward manufacturers who attempt to introduce new (i.e. 14-SEER) dry-charge product to the marketplace in the recent/near future. Nothing in this policy statement would seem to impact current distributor inventory. HARDI advises all distributors in the south and southwest regions to keep in mind that the sellthrough period of inventory produced on or before December 31, 2014 ends on June 30, 2016. Blacks Supply Hosts LG PWC and Ground Zero Training in December Blacks Supply hosted their LG Mini Split PWC and Ground Zero Training session on December 9th at their LG training facility in Orlando on Forsyth Road. The Sales & Applications training scheduled for December 16th was cancelled. The PWC (Piping, Wiring, and Charging) is to train contractors the fundamentals for installing LG products correctly. There are significant differences in the installation of DFS products from the unitary equipment. With DFS sales growing at a such an increased rate, Blacks Supply believes every contractor who understands the difference in DFS installation requirements contributes to this growth. Blacks Supply focuses on customer training so contractors are informed of all the latest technology in the HVAC industry. The Ground Zero class is designed for contractors who arrive to service equipment they didn’t install or don’t know what to look for first to correct the problem. The system may be showing an error code but if the contractor did not do the original install or someone else has been on the job, this class teaches them to go back to Ground Zero to insure the equipment is installed correctly. Ground Zero now incorporates a section on speciality tools and supplies that facilitate installation and maintenance of duct free systems. Blacks Supply is a stocking distributor of LG Ductless Mini-Split products. They also have all the installation supplies you need to complete the job. There are significant differences in the installation of duct free system products from the unitary equipment Terry Frisenda of LG spoke on how Ground Zero training focuses P.W.C. issues and how to quickly correct them. Nobody is happier than I am that 2015 is history. Nothing in particular comes to mind about the past year that made it good or bad, it’s just that I am really looking forward to 2016. One thing is for sure … this past December will go down in history as one of the hottest ever. I’m not complaining, just mentioning that the warm weather has made it one for the record books. Welcome 2016 … I am so happy you’re here, along with the fresh start you bring to us all! It is now time to hit the reset button and get into the business mode. I’ve heard it said that to know where you are going, you have to know where you have been. I don’t know if I totally agree with that, but having business records that you can go back to and review does have its advantages, especially when you are setting goals for a new year. Have you set any goals for 2016? Something to consider is managing your cash flow. Although we haven’t seen a real decline in temperatures, it’s a good idea to have a plan as to where the money is going to come from to get you through the tough times. In addition to cash flow, there are so many other parts of your business to think about as well … the important thing is to be asking yourself the right questions. Do you have systems and procedures in place? To begin, think of the end result. How are your sales? What are you doing to get new customers? What are you doing to keep the ones you have? Do you have billing procedures in place? Many companies now operate on a COD basis which can really make operating your business a lot easier. But if you are giving credit, these are a few questions you need to be asking yourself: • Do I really need to grant credit? • Will selling on credit increase my sales? • How much credit will (can) I give? • What system will I have in place to make sure I collect what is owed? • Should I charge late fees? • Is the applicant even credit worthy? What criteria will I use to score credit requests? • What do I do when good invoices go bad? When working with large companies, or even with the government, you should always take into consideration the time it will take to receive the money owed to you. How much cash can you afford to have tied up with big accounts? Keep in mind the SECRET of BILLING: The SOONER the BETTER. Are you charging enough for your products and services? How do you know? Have you considered flat-rate pricing, or do you prefer time and material? What will work best for your business? What will work best for your clients? Finally, are you going to manage your business, or is your business going to manage you? I have heard this one so many times, but you know what I have found? No matter how successful a company is, and no matter how easy the owner makes running it look, your business is like a marriage. It needs attention. Neglect it, and there is going to be trouble! I hope 2016 turns out to be a banner you and your company. (December 18, 2015) – Energy efficiency standards issued yesterday for rooftop air conditioners and heat pumps – which represent the largest energy and pollution savings of any rule ever issued by the Department of Energy (DOE) – will benefit businesses, manufacturers, and the environment, according to four of the organizations that participated in the negotiations leading to the announcement. The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) representing HVACR and water heating manufacturers, the Appliance Standards Awareness Project (ASAP), the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), and Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) joined other stakeholders in the negotiations.* The new standards are expected to save 1.7 trillion kilowatt hours over 30 years of sales, or almost as much energy as created by all the coal burned in the United States to generate electricity in a year. Rooftop air conditioners cool about half the commercial floor space in the nation. DOE also set standards for commercial warm air furnaces, which are typically installed with the rooftop commercial air conditioners. Stephen Yurek, President and CEO of AHRI, praised the DOE-convened negotiation process that brought together 17 stakeholders, including representatives of individual manufacturers, installers, utilities, environmental groups, and efficiency organizations. “The consensus agreement provides our members with certainty while providing benefits for consumers and businesses.” Rooftop air conditioners are typically found on low-rise buildings such as big box stores, schools, apartment buildings, restaurants, and offices. The new standards would net a typical building owner between $4,200 and $10,100 over the life of a single rooftop air conditioner. Moreover, unlike a typical household that has just one central air conditioning unit, commercial spaces have multiple units, and therefore may enjoy bigger savings. A typical big box store, for example, often has over 20 units – and that’s just one building among millions of commercial facilities across the country. A selection committee chooses a deserving organization that is in need of HVACR repairs, upgrades or installations and that will put the money toward a product of this nature. This year, the Jacksonville Police Athletic League (PAL), was selected as the beneficiary. This not for profit organization was also selected in 2010, the last time the AHR Expo was in Orlando. After receiving a record number of Innovation Award entries for the 2016 show, the AHR Expo was proud to contribute $19,600 toward replacing and upgrading air handling systems at one of Jacksonville PAL’s facilities. TODAY’S AC & REFRIGERATION NEWS JANUARY 2016 MARS University MARS/Comfort-Aire/Century Online Training Site Launched Training for MARS motors and components, and Comfort-Aire® and Century® branded HVAC equipment, is now available on demand with the launch of a new online training site, MARS University. The interactive site is the repository for all the company’s self-directed training courses, allowing distributors, dealers, installers and sales personnel to learn about a wide range of topics via an easy-to-use platform that’s available at the user’s convenience. “The site was developed because we recognize that training is an essential part of keeping up to date in today’s HVAC industry,” said Frank Mehler, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing. “But we also know service techs and distributor personnel can’t always get away for off-site seminars. MARS U makes it easy for them to learn about industry trends as well as our company’s products—on their own schedule.” Training modules include such topics as application overview, installation and operation of specific products, service issues, use of software, how to sell tips, and more. Links to manuals and other related documents are included with each course, for a fast connection to useful reference material. MARS U can be accessed at www.marsdelivers.com. , followed by clicking on the MARS University tab. Access to MARS U is free and limited to individuals in the HVAC-R industry. All that’s required is registration to set up a user name and password. The online platform allows for immediate feedback, as well as rewards for successful completion of courses. CEU credits will be available for certain courses, and many others pay participants “MARS Bucks”, monetary awards of $1 to $5, depending on the length and complexity of the individual course. A brief quiz at the end of each course verifies that the participant understands the important points or concepts, and determines whether CEUs or MARS Bucks are awarded. A participant can take a course when it’s convenient and re-visit that course as often as desired to review the information covered. The online platform maintains a list of all courses that the individual has taken for reference. Mehler adds that new courses are constantly under development and will be added to the site on a regular basis. Motors and Armatures Inc. The festivities were held on December 17th from 11am-2pm at the Kelsey Lane location in Tampa. Smokin Joes BBQ prepared a delicious BBQ lunch with all the favorite side dishes for all to enjoy. What started as a small event 35 years ago at Gulf Refrigeration (which was aquired by Ferguson in 2006), has grown into a large Customer Appreciation Party where over two hundred contractors, vendors, and friends now attend. Everyone came together and raised over $10,000 for the Hope Childrens Home. “Our most sincere thanks goes out to our customers, vendors, employees and friends for helping to make this highly rewarding event possible” said Ferguson General Manager Hunter Shepard. “It is much more than a customer appreciation party, it’s an opportunity to be a part of something bigger, The Hope Children’s Home. We thank the children for being a part of our Annual Christmas Party.” Founded in 1968, Hope Children’s Home has rescued nearly 5,000 children between the ages of infant to 18 years of age. Most of these children have been discarded, abused, unwanted, or orphaned. Hope Children’s Home receives no State or Federal funding and is entirely supported by churches, private individuals, clubs, and organizations. Their school program begins in the Nursery and continues through the 12th grade. Over 90% of the students who graduate from Hope Christian School will continue to college. For over 40 years, Hope Children’s Home has taken children in and tried to make a difference in their very impressionable lives. Responses from a recent joint survey, sent to 1,300 2016 AHR Expo exhibitors by ASHRAE Journal and International Exposition Co., revealed optimism for the coming year in the HVACR industry. The survey asked HVACR equipment manufacturers to consider what they anticipate the business climate will be for the industry – regarding their sales, market segment activity and overall expectations – for 2016. Results were compared to a similar survey sent out in November of 2014, which gauged exhibitors’ expectations for 2015. While some answers varied from year to year by only slight percentage points in either direction, some were drastically different, representing changes and future trends in the industry. According to the survey, 86 percent of exhibitors are confident about their business prospects in 2016, with 14 percent answering “excellent” and 62 percent selecting “good.” Only 14 percent rated conditions poor or had no opinion. These numbers, particularly the percentage of “good” answers, are fairly consistent with 2015’s survey, which showed a significant growth in optimism from previous years. Exhibitors also expressed positive outlooks when asked about their expectations of sales growth in the new year based on prospective clients. 81percent expected to see an increase in sales. Of those, 21 percent predicted a 10 percent growth while 33 percent anticipated between 5 and 10 percent growth. In keeping with the positive outlook for industry growth in 2016, 67 percent of HVACR manufacturers responding to the survey said they plan to introduce a new product at the 2016 AHR Expo in January. Of those new products, 53 percent aim to improve energy efficiency. The survey question asking, “In general, how much are government and/or utility incentives helping to increase the adoption of energyefficient products and technologies?” leant additional insight in this regard. Fifty-eight percent answered “some,” 28 percent said “very little,” and 5 percent responded “not at all,” while only 9 percent said “a lot.” This feedback shows that the industry would welcome and appreciate more help from incentive programs in the coming year. When manufacturers were asked about their viewpoints on various market segments in the new year, data and telecom centers, hospitals and healthcare facilities all tied with the residential market for best outlook overall. All were rated “excellent” or “good” by 65 percent of respondents. Data and telecom centers and residences were both rated “excellent” by 10 percent and “good” by 55 percent, while hospitals and healthcare facilities ratings were 16 percent and 49 percent, respectively. Closely following in ratings were light commercial and office buildings with 62 percent each and heavy commercial with 60 percent “excellent” and “good” ratings. These percentages are a sign of stability in the industry, as they are on par with last year’s survey results showing the strongest outlooks in the same markets. When it came to the anticipated best potential for business in 2016, responses skewed from those of 2015’s survey. Forty-two percent of respondents selected “retrofit and renovations” as the most opportunistic area of the industry, up 14 percentage points from last year. Thirty percent selected “new construction,” which was last year’s number one answer. “Maintenance and replacement” decreased from 32 to 28 percent in the year between surveys. “Numbers like these represent the ever-changing needs of this vast, complex industry,” said Clay Stevens, president of International Exposition Company. “Yes, the market segments have stayed consistent, but their needs haven’t. We are seeing less new construction and a jump in demand for renovations in existing structures. Much of this comes from a market-wide push for energy efficiency and conservation of resources, which I am pleased to see. The trend of improved energy efficiency in products lends hope to the future in regard to streamlining energy usage worldwide.” The next question asked manufacturers to rate the importance of various product features to their customers. Leading the pack of what customers considered “very important” was reliability with 87 percent. An additional 11 percent said reliability was “somewhat important.” The playing field was evened out when totals of “very important” and “somewhat important” were calculated. Energy efficiency, indoor air quality, maintenance and first cost totals all fell in the 93- to 98-percent range. Comfort was considered important to 90 percent of customers and sustainability to 82 percent. When it came to use of recycled materials in the product or its packaging, answers were evenly split, with 50 percent deeming it important and 50 percent selecting “not important.” Examining customers’ needs along with the needs of the industry as a whole, exhibitors’ responses provide a more in-depth understanding of industry trends. When exhibitors almost unanimously agree that reliability is very important to customers, for example, it indicates a trend of engineering and manufacturing to greater reliability across HVACR industry products. A final, open-ended question asked manufactures what they perceive to be the most important trend or issue in the current HVACR industry. Responses included: renewable fuels, the expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT), building automation, product cost and education, training and recruitment of HVACR staff. . At-large, the most common answer was energy efficiency, suggesting that 2016 may see a drastic shift in focus toward creating even more energy-efficient products and technology industry-wide. PAGE B4 TODAY’S AC & REFRIGERATION NEWS Scenes from A&R Supply’s Customer Appreciation Pig Roast in Doral on December 18th JANUARY 2016 LG Electronics Introduces Lats Cad 2 Software Reducing Vrf Design Time By Up To 80 Percent ALPHARETTA, Ga., December 7, 2015 LG Electronics USA announced today the debut LATS CAD 2, a software that seamlessly integrates with AutoCAD to allow engineers to lay out and validate LG VRF systems directly into their CAD drawings. This design software arms engineers with the ability to design commercial LG variable refrigerant flow (VRF), multi and single split systems with more accuracy and speed. LG¹s LATS CAD 2, the first design software of its kind in the U.S. market, seamlessly integrates with the industry-standard building design program, AutoCAD. By eliminating transitional errors between previously incompatible programs and incorporating system design improvements, AutoCAD and LATS CAD 2 maintain building design integrity between programs, creating a more fluid design process, resulting in a significant reduction in design time and increased accuracy. ³LG is committed to creating innovative solutions for the HVAC industry, and with our new LATS CAD 2 software, we¹re poised to revolutionize the way VRF systems are laid out and designed,² said Brian Bogdan, LG¹s U.S. Director of Engineering for Air Conditioning Systems. ³LG is a pivotal player in VRF innovation, and with this software, we¹re transforming the design process by dramatically reducing the time it takes to lay out a VRF system.² Additionally, LG¹s LATS CAD 2 automatically measures pipe segments and calculates refrigerant charge, whereas preceding design software required engineers to manually measure and type pipe lengths by hand a long and tedious job. This improvement alone cuts down on design time and provides major cost-savings to firms using the program, who can now use design time more efficiently. LATS CAD 2 includes the same products found in LATS MULTI V and adds multi and single split products, allowing the user to design buildings with the LG products they need. Users can easily access the tools they¹re accustomed to working with and implement them in the new software, creating a more seamless design process. The programs also utilizes AutoCAD¹s command and operational functions, making LATS CAD 2 intuitive to those familiar with LG¹s other design programs, enabling users to begin using the software and realizing benefits immediately. These can often be time consuming and frustrating to diagnose. What if there was a simple way to track down this type of problem? A static pressure test of the duct system can reveal hidden restrictions responsible for low airflow. This diagnostic test is typically much quicker and less destructive than tearing a duct system apart to uncover the source of the problem. Let’s look at the steps to determine if an airflow restriction in the duct system exists through static pressure testing. Test Equipment Needed To test duct pressures you’ll need a static pressure kit. A static pressure kit should cost you less than $200 and contain the following. • An analog (0-1” scale) or digital manometer for measuring pressure • 3/16” tubing to transfer pressure from the duct to the manometer • A static pressure tip to insert into the duct for gathering pressure readings • A cordless drill with a 3/8” drill bit and sheath (step-bits work too) • 3/8 hole plugs to seal the test ports you’ll install into the duct system. Measure Duct System Pressures To uncover duct system restrictions, the first pressure measurements you’ll want to obtain are from the supply and return duct system. These two pressure readings will point you to the side of the duct system that has the highest amount of airflow restriction. Step One – Drill 3/8” holes in the supply plenum and return plenum near the equipment. These two test holes should be measuring duct system pressure only. Be sure to inspect before you drill your test holes. Step Two – Attach one end of the tubing to the static pressure tip and the other end to the manometer. Properly setup the manometer and insert the static pressure tip into the test holes one at a time. Step Three – Read and record your pressure reading from the supply side of the duct system and your pressure reading from the return side of the duct system. These two readings will be compared against 20% of the fan’s rated capacity. Compare Your Readings The typical residential fan is rated at .50” of pressure. This would result in a duct pressure reading that shouldn’t exceed .10” on the supply side and .10” on the return side of the duct system. Compare the readings you gathered in the duct system to this baseline pressure. If you exceed this pressure reading, the side of the duct system the reading was taken is likely restricted. You’ll know which side of the duct system is most restrictive to airflow by looking for the highest pressure reading. This is the side of the duct system you’ll want to focus your attention on as you look to isolate the restriction in the duct system. Be careful not to assume the entire duct system itself is undersized if you read a high duct pressure. The high pressure reading may be an indicator of a restrictive fitting, closed damper, or poorly designed fittings. Further testing will be needed to identify the exact location of the restriction. This type of testing is often referred to as pressure profiling. Pinpointing Duct Restrictions Once you have identified which side of the duct system has the restriction, it’s time to narrow your search. Begin by checking the pressure drop across components that look suspect. Drill a hole on each side of the suspected restriction and measure pressure in both locations. If there is a drastic change in pressure across the component, you’ve just found your problem. There will be times the problem isn’t obvious during a visual inspection. If no obvious problems can be located, begin drilling holes approximately every four feet in the side of the duct system that’s restricted. Just as with the component pressure drop mentioned above, you’re looking for a drastic change in pressure. While conducting this test, it’s common to find loose duct liner or crushed flex duct that’s invisible during a visual inspection. Repairing Duct Restrictions If your testing reveals a point of drastic pressure change along the length of the duct, you have a single restriction. Mark the spot of the restriction, open the duct and remove the obstruction to airflow. Once the duct has been repaired, make sure you don’t unintentionally add another restriction and seal the duct to prevent leakage. You may need additional strapping or support if the repair weakens the duct. If you had to remove insulation during the repair, be sure to install adequate insulation back in place to prevent new problems. If you didn’t discover a single drastic pressure change from one test location to the next, there’s a good chance that side of the duct system is undersized. This will involve more than a simple repair or quick fix. If you reach this point, you’ll need to recommend additional airflow testing to your customer that can further identify the source of low airflow. The notice of proposed rulemaking (NOPR) for these amendments was published on August 6. In the comments AHRI submitted in response to the NOPR, it recommended that DOE adopt the latest version of AHRI Standard 340/360-2015, Performance Rating of Commercial and Industrial Unitary Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Equipment, instead of the 2007 version, thereby addressing all the issues and revisions raised by DOE in its NOPR. DOE did not incorporate that recommendation in this final rule. DOE explains that it declined to adopt ANSI/AHRI 340/360-2015 in whole or in part at this time because it is still investigating whether certain provisions in the draft of the standard will change measured efficiency; a final version of the 2015 standard was not available during the preparation of this final rule. The effective date of this rule is 30 days after the date of publication in the Federal Register, and testing to this amended test procedure will be required beginning 360 days after that date. AHRI will announce in the AHRI Update and notify relevant product section members when this occurs. Contact: Frank Stanonik. TODAY’S AC & REFRIGERATION NEWS JANUARY 2016 Proposed ASHRAE/ACCA Standard for Energy Audits Open for Public Comment ATLANTA – While energy audits are vital to ensuring energy efficient buildings, the audit industry has been largely unstructured. Work products that are labeled energy audits vary greatly in scope, rigor and quality. A proposed standard from ASHRAE and the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) would bring order to the “Wild West” of the energy audit industry. ASHRAE/ACCA Standard 211P, Standard for Commercial Building Energy Audits, is open for public comment until Jan. 4, 2016. To comment or learn more, visit www.ashrae.org/publicreviews. Standard 211P will establish consistent practices for conducting and reporting energy audits for commercial buildings. “The standard has the potential to make a huge impact on completing energy saving projects in existing buildings,” Jim Kelsey, chair of the Standard 211P Committee, said. “Currently there is no standard that defines what constitutes an energy audit. Most practitioners in the energy audit industry are trying to do the right thing for their clients by finding projects and quantifying energy and cost savings in energy audits. However, without a consistent standard, we have seen the quality and approach to energy auditing vary widely throughout the industry. Without standardization, it’s been the Wild West out there – anyone who carries a clipboard and a camera can call themselves an energy auditor and their report an energy audit. What we hope to accomplish with this standard is to set appropriate minimum criteria for what approaches are expected, what information should be in an audit, and how that information is communicated to the end client.” The standard will define the procedures required to perform Energy Audits Levels 1, 2 and 3; provide a common scope of work for these audit levels for use by building owners and others; establish standardized industry practices ; and establish minimum reporting requirements for the results. “One new area that I’m excited about in the standard is electronic data exchange for audit results,” Kelsey said. “In this version, we’ve adopted standardized reporting formats that are consistent with new tools to make it easy to transmit results to cities and agencies. This approach has several benefits to the energy world. First, consistent reporting enables energy auditors to streamline their processes. Currently, it is common for different customers to require different reporting formats which leads to a lot of customization for each job. Secondly, standard formats allow us to convert audit results to common data formats (such as BuildingSync XML). This makes it easier for cities, for example, to import audit results to a common database, rather than each agency requiring auditors to manually enter their results in the city’s platform. ASHRAE first addressed audits in 2004 with its publication Procedures for Commercial Building Energy Audits (1st Ed), which introduced the concept of ASHRAE Energy Audit Levels 1, 2 and 3 as a shorthand for designating the depth of an energy audit. That concept is now commonly used in the commercial building sector. In 2011, a second edition, which added guidelines for best practices in energy audits, was published. These books have been widely adopted, cited by rating programs and in cities like New York and San Francisco where local ordinances require energy audits for certain buildings. “However, the books were written as guides, not in codeenforceable, standard language,” Kelsey said. “With the new standard, we will hone the clarity of those audit level definitions and make enforcement clearer, and potentially broaden the adoption of the ASHRAE audit levels.” ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a global society advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for the built environment. The Society and its more than 54,000 members worldwide focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability. JANUARY 2016 TODAY’S AC & REFRIGERATION NEWS PAGE C3 10 Ways to Get the Most Out of The AHR EXPO The largest HVAC trade show in North America is in Orlando. Do not miss it. And follow these 10 recommendations to get the most out of it. 1. Register Until January 11, registration is free from the show website at AHRExpo.com. Even if you register after the 11th, it makes sense to go online. This can allow you to skip the lengthy lines to register the day of the show. 2. Set Objectives If you want to have a successful show, define what constitutes success for you. Is it identifying a new accessory or system enhancement you can offer? Is it finding the best WiFi thermostat? Set specific, measurable goals. 3. Identify Your Top Ten Exhibitors AHR is massive. You need to prioritize. From the website, identify the ten exhibitors you most want to visit. From low booth number to high, visit these first. 4. Make Appointments On the manufacturing and distribution side, the entire industry turns out for AHR. Even if a manufacturer is not exhibiting, top personnel attend the show. If there’s someone in particular you want to meet face-to-face, call or email to set an appointment in advance of the show. If you cannot connect in advance, stop by the company’s booth to find out when the individual has booth duty and return at the appropriate time. 5. Remember Business Cards While many exhibitors can scan your name badge, you should still carry business cards. When you give someone a business card, it’s human nature to reciprocate. Collecting business cards, makes it easier for you to follow up proactively instead of waiting to be contacted. 6. Take Quick Notes When someone gives you a business card, write on it. Write why you collected the card. You might collect 10 to 20 cards over a couple of days at the show. It becomes easy to remember just why you have certain cards. This is especially true for cards from generic sounding companies (e.g., XYZ Industries). 7. Walk the Show A major reason to attend a trade show is to discover the unexpected. You want to find a new product, service, or business method that will help you make more money and get a jump on your competition. Every company exhibiting at AHR is spending significant amounts of money because the principals believe they have desirable products and services that people will want once they learn about them. They only way to discover potential gems is by walking the show floor. There’s a tendency at AHR to start in the main exhibit hall with the huge exhibits. If a company has the budget for a thousand square feet of exhibit space, they also have the budget for an intense trade advertising campaign. You will probably have plenty of opportunities to hear about the latest and greatest from the large exhibitors. So instead, start in the trade show hinterlands. Start walking the show with the booths with the largest numbers. These are the smaller exhibitors who made last minute decisions to exhibit. That means these are companies with smaller marketing budgets that are bringing something new so they made a decision to exhibit. 8. Be Open Many times contractors walk a trade show with the attitude that every exhibitor is a telemarketer calling at dinner time to offer time shares. The reason you attend the show is to learn about new products and services, so learn. Save time for yourself and the exhibitor by defining your business up front. If you are a residential service and replacement contractor from Tallahassee that does $3 million a year with 12 trucks, say so. If you do not match the exhibitor’s target profile, he’ll let you know. 9. Create an Action List After the show ends, take a few minutes to grab a cup of coffee and create an action list. Who will you contact and why? What new services will you invest in? What new products will you sell? What are you going to do different to make more money? When you get back to the shop, execute. Without execution, you might as well stay home. 10. Check Out the Success by Design Reception While not a part of AHR, the Service Nation Alliance is having a “Success by Design” event in Orlando the same time as AHR on boosting your sales and profit levels. It’s in the evening so it won’t conflict with the show. If you’re interested, call 877.262.3341 for more information. By integrating Wi-Fi connectivity, new and existing residential and commercial Rinnai Tankless Water Heaters, dating back as far as ten years, can be enabled to be monitored and controlled via smart devices for water heating management, control and maintenance. The wireless module will be available through Rinnai America Corporation’s wholesale distribution early next year. “Rinnai’s new tankless Wi-Fi capabilities allow consumers to further expand in-home connectivity of major appliances that shape their daily living habits, while also helping dealers develop deeper relationships with their customers by allowing them to communicate with each other more quickly and proactively - ultimately, providing their customers with peace of mind and enabling dealers to grow their business,” said Susan Mittelbrun, Vice President of Marketing at Rinnai America Corporation. “Because the device directly links them to their customers, dealers can enhance solutions and services.” The new Wi-Fi module, which can be bundled with a new Rinnai tankless water heater purchase, or installed on an existing model, attaches easily to the Rinnai Tankless Water Heater by a two-wire interface quickly connecting through the local Wi-Fi network. Once connected and the free Rinnai app is downloaded and activated, the Rinnai Tankless Water Heater is associated to the Rinnai independent dealer, and monitoring and communications are initiated. Additionally, the user can control their tankless water heater from a smartphone or tablet to turn the system on and off, change the water temperature, monitor status and activate the recirculation system. For dealers, the wireless access serves as a remote diagnostics tool and saves time. The WiFi module pushes system codes and other service information automatically to the dealer, either locally or remotely, allowing them to proactively contact their customers and know in advance service needs before ever leaving their place of business. Dealers are also able to reference diagnostic codes, product information, step-by-step instructions, with links to manuals, training, videos and more. HARDI Distributors Report 4.6 Percent Revenue Increase in November COLUMBUS, Ohio, December 31, 2015– Heating, Air-conditioning & Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI) released its monthly TRENDS report, showing average sales for HARDI distributor members increased by 4.6 percent in November 2015. The annualized growth for the 12 months through November 2015 slipped further, to 5.5 percent. This is the third consecutive decline from the recent peak of 7.3 percent achieved for the 12 months through August 2015. “November had a difficult comparison and this year had an extra billing day to help with the challenge, but warmer weather and heavy rain in many parts of the country interfered with commerce this month,” said HARDI Market Research and Benchmarking Analyst Brian Loftus. It is not unlikely this modest pace of growth could persist. “HARDI members will definitely be feeling the slowdown well into the first half of 2016 -- before things improve in the second half of the year,” said HARDI Senior Economist Connor Lokar. “2017 is still onward and upward to a solid and better year of macroeconomic growth.” The Days Sales Outstanding (DSO), a measure of how quickly customers pay their bills, is now at 45.5. “DSO is similar to last year at this time,” said Loftus. “A couple of years with an improving economy is making it easier for customers to comfortably pay their bills faster. A few years ago at this time DSO was in the high 40s.” HARDI members do not receive financial compensation in exchange for their monthly sales data and can discontinue their participation without prior notice or penalty. Participation is voluntary, and the depth of market coverage varies from region to region. An independent entity collects and compiles the data that can include products not directly associated with the HVACR industry. HARDI (Heating, Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Distributors International) is the single voice of wholesale distribution within the HVACR industry. HARDI proudly represents more than 480 distributor members representing more than 5,000 branch locations, and close to 500 suppliers, manufacturer representatives and service vendors. JANUARY 2016 TODAY’S AC & REFRIGERATION NEWS RPA Applauds Bill Extending Solar Tax Credit After Working on Capitol Hill for its Passage Award Washington, D.C. (Dec. 18, 2015) — The U.S. House of Representatives and Senate today passed a $1.1 trillion spending bill, which includes extending tax credits for renewable energy technologies, including solar water heating and photovoltaics. President Obama has indicated his support and plans to sign the bill into law. This passage represents an important victory for the Radiant Professionals Alliance (RPA), which actively lobbied Congress for the extensions, and IAPMO’s Advanced Energy Programs. The omnibus spending bill, which staved off a government shutdown, contains language extending the Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) five additional years, through Dec. 31, 2021. The fiveyear extension includes a phase out, with a reduction of the credit in the final two years. The ITC is a 30 percent federal tax credit for solar systems installed on residential and commercial properties. Savings from the credit significantly reduce system costs for home or building owners, making the economics of a system purchase more attractive. Since the ITC was implemented in 2006, annual solar installations have grown by more than 1,600 percent, a compound annual growth rate of 76 percent, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). As result of the extension, the 30-percent credit will remain in place through 2019, reducing to 26 percent in 2020 and 22 percent in 2021 before ending completely. A link to the full legislative text can be found at http:// goo.gl/NGiPeM. The RPA recently participated in a “Day on Capitol Hill” event during which its members lobbied for extension of the credit. “This event was, to my knowledge, a first for the RPA,” said Executive Director Mark Eatherton of the lobbying efforts. “It speaks to the growing influence of our coalition when we work together to positively impact our industry on behalf of our members.” The extension is also welcome news for IAPMO’s Advanced Energy Programs, which oversees the RPA and IAPMO’s Solar Heating and Cooling business units. “RPA members and IAPMO R&T solar certification customers can stop worrying about the credit extension and start doing business with renewed certainty,” said Les Nelson, Vice President of Advanced Energy/Solar Heating and Cooling Programs for IAPMO. As a result of the extension, by 2020 solar will account for 3.5 percent of U.S. electricity generation, up from 0.1 percent in 2010, enough electricity to power 19 million homes, according to the SEIA. This will offset 100 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to shutting down 26 coal-fired power plants or taking 20 million cars off the roads. Programmatic accreditation is an independent third party review of an educational program. The process validates that established standards of excellence for HVACR educational programs are met. These standards are designed to assure that our future workforce receives the quality of training required to provide the skills necessary for success in the HVACR industry. Accreditation standards require a thorough examination of: mission of program, administration responsibilities, finances and funds, student services, instruction design and program elements, physical facilities, equipment and tools, cooperative training, and instructor qualifications. In order to pursue accreditation the staff at the school has to submit a self-study filled with narratives and examples of how they complied with each of the required standards. The self- study once completed was sent to the HVAC Excellence accreditation review board to thoroughly assess for compliance against each standard. HVAC Excellence having approved the self study sent an onsite team to conduct an intense onsite review of the program. The onsite team consist of two members, one who has served years as an HVACR instructor, the other as a school administrator. These onsite team members are seasoned professionals that possess the knowledge, training and experience to successfully evaluate every aspect of an HVACR program. The selection of these team members gives integrity to the accreditation process and provides students with confidence in the program. Upon a thorough review of all of the documentation presented by the school and the onsite accreditation team, the HVAC Excellence accreditation review board decided to grant accreditation of the program. Now that the HVACR program has been granted accreditation it can: provide students with quality assurance of the program, provide employers assurance that graduates are properly trained, can IMP_AC-Refrigeration-News.indd 1 assist in establishing articulation agreements, is an eligibility determinant for funding, can increase enrollment, student placement and employer satisfaction is enhanced, requires faculty participation in self-study and annual reporting, can assist students in the acceptability of transfer credits, creates goals for self-improvement, can lead to advanced placement opportunities. PAGE C7 Contractor Comfort Index 75 in November; Up 1 from 2014 The November Contractor Comfort Index (CCI) shows that contractors are continuing to feel optimistic about short-term growth with one month left of 2015. ACCA began measuring contractor attitudes toward short-term economic growth with the CCI in February 2010. For November 2015, the CCI is 75. The CCI also shows that contractors are feeling about the same about short-term growth than they were 12 months earlier when the CCI was 74. The CCI is calculated based on a survey of the association’s contractor members, who are asked how positive they feel about new business prospects, existing business activity, and expected staffing decisions in the short-term future. Weighted and averaged into one number, a CCI of 50 or above reflects anticipated growth. Tools and Solutions to... Parker Hannifin Wins 2016 AHR Expo Innovation Award Honorable Mention for Sporlan Refrigeration Troubleshooting App Sporlan Division of Parker Hannifin Corporation, the global leader in motion and control technologies, recently learned that the Sporlan Refrigeration Troubleshooting App, designed to assist field technicians of all skill levels with troubleshooting components of a Direct Expansion (DX) refrigeration system received the 2016 AHR Expo Innovation Award Honorable Mention for the Software Category. The annual awards competition honors the most inventive and original HVACR products, systems, and technologies showcased at each year’s AHR Expo. Winners are selected by a panel of third-party ASHRAE member judges who evaluated all award entries based on innovative design, creativity, application, value, and market impact. Award winners will be recognized in a formal ceremony at the 2016 AHR Expo, set for January 25-27 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The app includes a guided mode and expert mode to aid the different skill levels of technicians. For the less experienced technician, the guided mode in the app walks the user through a series of questions with only “Yes” or “No” answers. The questions follow flow diagrams that were created to cover all aspects of a direct expansion refrigeration system. For the more experienced technician, the expert mode breaks down troubleshooting into 6 sections to quickly get to the root cause of the problem. The app allows users to go through the troubleshooting process, get to a corrective action and capture notes with pictures, videos, memos, and text. Steve Schuster, Sporlan Application Engineer, commented, “Service companies spend countless hours troubleshooting refrigeration systems. By reducing the amount of misdiagnosed problems, time and money can be saved, helping the service company’s bottom line.” “Users can become more efficient and accurate with their troubleshooting skills by acquiring the information that will help reach a diagnosis quicker and more accurately,” Schuster added. JANUARY 2016 TODAY’S AC & REFRIGERATION NEWS New Emerson Innovation Center to be Proving Ground for Building Controls and HVAC Research Dayton, Ohio, December 11, 2015 - In addition to supporting industry research across residential HVAC, supermarkets, commercial kitchens and data centers, Emerson’s new 40,000 square foot innovation center will itself be a lab for commercial building controls and HVAC technology. The Helix Innovation Center, currently under construction on the University of Dayton campus, will feature multiple HVAC systems to monitor and enhance comfort in the building and for testing and evaluation of building controls and efficiency. “There are a number of new regulations on the horizon that affect commercial HVAC systems. This facility will give us a way to evaluate how modulating systems and controls can work to maximize efficiency and comfort while testing in a real-world environment,” said Shane Angle, vice president & general manager, commercial at Emerson Climate Technologies air conditioning business. Initially the Helix Innovation Center will feature a 50-ton roof top unit, a separate 20-ton roof top unit and a VRF system, along with Emerson building controls. For easy testing and evaluation the facility will have visible ductwork and a station where building metrics from electronic monitors and building controls can be easily accessed. “This is a unique opportunity for us to collaborate with our industry partners to evaluate comfort and efficiency in a commercial building,” said Rajan Rajendran, vice president, system innovation center and sustainability for Emerson Climate Technologies. “One of the exciting things about working in The Helix is that we can look at settings like an office, a supermarket and a restaurant all in the same facility and share what we learn across those environments.” SBA and Operation HOPE Renew Alliance to Promote Financial Education WASHINGTON – The U.S. Small Business Administration and Operation HOPE, Inc., today renewed its Strategic Alliance Memorandum (SAM) to promote financial education and encourage economic empowerment through entrepreneurship. “This is an important step toward helping more entrepreneurs look beyond their neighborhoods to engage not only in the nation’s economy but also in the global economy,” said SBA Associate Administrator for Entrepreneurial Development Tameka Montgomery. “Together, we will continue to support the education and economic development of small businesses in our underserved communities and beyond with SBA resources to help foster entrepreneurial empowerment.” The alliance signing took place with Operation HOPE’s founder and CEO John Hope Bryant and Associate Administrator Montgomery at the SBA’s headquarters earlier today. “We are pleased to continue our partnership with the SBA and particularly pleased to highlight it during National Entrepreneurship Month. The alliance is intended to spur economic development through small business growth, and to improve entrepreneurial education that advances greater access to capital, expanded technical assistance and access to procurement programs. Operation HOPE, Inc., is America’s first nonprofit social investment bank and a national provider of financial literacy and economic empowerment programs. Through ongoing collaborations and long-term partnerships with leading government, private sector, and community interests, Operation HOPE works to bring self-sufficiency and a sustained spirit of revitalization to America’s inner-city communities. At the core of Operation HOPE’s mission is the empowerment of communities through financial capability and dignity for all through its movement of “Silver Rights” or the right to financial literacy, making free enterprise work for everyone. The SBA, its resource partners and Operation HOPE will continue their collaboration to provide small business counseling and training, and to work together to make resources available to benefit entrepreneurs nationwide.
