Your kindness will always be remembered. Best regards, Mary Anne Brindley Volunteers- We don’t even know where to begin to thank you for all the work- washing windows, pulling weeds, singing and visiting with our residents- it was such a great gift of your time! Our family really appreciated everything! Hopefully the next time you come in you can just enjoy visiting or whatever! Thank you so much! Mary Kay Harris, Hallmark Care Center Ruth Reckling wanted to thank the people at her house. She had so much positive to say and called her team her good shepherds! Thanks! I want to express our thanks to Ed Timm & Sons and the United Methodist Church for the helping hand they extended to my son and me on Servant Sunday. I can not tell you how wonderful it was to have some difficult tasks done that we’ve not been able to do for age and medical problems. You were an answer to a prayer for us. Sincerely, Audrey & David Thank you for your hard work around the school district grounds last Sunday. The addition of mulch and removal of weeds has made our buildings look great. What does a label tell others that my actions do or do not? Chances are it hasn’t been that long ago either of these labels were applied to you or you used them to define yourself. But what do they really mean? What do they say about you…or us? We might start with the foundational ministry of this church. As we welcome our next lead pastor, what response will we give to the questions of what are we about, what do we stand for? Perhaps you’ve heard that recently our church leaders have defined a framework for a considered response built on four “pillars” or core values. You’ll see these in the narthex and at the upper west entrance labeled as worship, spiritual growth, outreach and family ministry. While at first my response was, “ pillars, another new structure of work areas for the church?” What I’ve come to recognize is that God’s plan for us all is firmly grounded in these four focused aspects of living out our faith. Let me encourage you to take time right now to read 1 Chronicles 16:7-36. I found these words from King David fully opening to the concept of our pillars. God’s desire for our efforts, spoken through King David, can be found here and clearly delineate the defining characters or cores for His children. David first told the Israelites what was essential to the nature of honoring God. Specifically, look at verse 9 where David instructs… 9 Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wonderful works. As found in the Psalms, here David establishes direction or purpose for honoring God with worship. It is through worship that we convey the truest feelings of our hearts in a way that is directed singularly to Him and at the same time witnesses to others the transformation and joy we have found. Next, in verse 11 David establishes that worship cannot be limited by what we currently know or feel… 11 Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually. By seeking Him, David points out that spiritual growth takes place more fully in the direction that God desires. If we are to truly know Him and be transformed by Him, it is we that must always work to connect to Him, turning back the pressure the world mounts offering an easier but catastrophic path. As found in verse 23b-24, David establishes what Jesus himself proclaims in his parable of the lamp… 23b Tell of his salvation from day to day. 24 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all peoples. What good does it do any of us to know something so special, something that truly transforms us from our brokenness, only to then keep it a secret? We know our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. David’s instruction reminds us that this is not the Methodist church choosing new direction, this is God’s path, centuries old. Notice he doesn’t say throughout the Jewish lands but rather all nations. It is this outreach that is at the heart of who God has equipped us to be. Finally, in verse 28 David establishes the importance of honoring all of creation… 28 Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. I find it particularly compelling that when civilization had chosen to focus on the men of society, David directs hearts to a focus on family ministry. David identifies to his leaders that God’s message will take root when the entire family worships, spiritually grows and outreaches together. Service Sunday is just one small example of how powerful this can be. While David spoke these instructions to God’s “chosen” people, they are every bit as much for us today as they were for the Levites to the Israelites then. This is made quite clear by the apostle Paul when he writes at the very end of Acts… CONTINUED to Page 5------------------>>>>> 4 Christian | Methodist | I’m a verb (continued) 27 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ 28 “Therefore I want you to know that God’s salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!” Acts 28:25b-31 NIV While David spoke directly to those he held dominion over, the Israelites, Paul releases our focus to what Jesus came to proclaim, God is for all of mankind. It is our chance to hear and know of salvation and to then decide what to do about it. Have you ever wondered what a Methodist is in the first place? Could you answer a game show question about it or hold up your faith to scrutiny? The father of Methodism, John Wesley, established a faith community that held emphasis on helping the poor and the “average” person. In order to break free of the structure that defined religion in his day, Mr. Wesley carefully crafted a systematic approach to building the person and the “church” and its missionary spirit. Methodism, and the word Methodist derives is defined as the practice of working, proceeding, producing according to a system or method. Mr. Wesley described this new system as being the very nature of honoring Jesus through Christian calling and living out gracefilled lives. So for me, I can’t wait for the day when someone next asks me what I stand for as a Methodist. My response, I don't stand for anything. I’m a Christian (verb) doing my very best to worship, spiritually grow, reach out to this world and strengthen a ministry to families for the future of God’s kingdom. It is by the action words of King David; give, call, make, sing, seek, remember, declare, ascribe and worship (see 1 Chron 16:7-36) that they will know I am a Christian, a Methodist, a verb. Happy Fourth Anniversary Scrip! What Is Scrip? Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. When you purchase scrip, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificates and prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, you earn revenue for our organization. How scrip generates revenue for you The Great Lakes Scrip Center acts on behalf of churches, schools and other non‑profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. Our church buys the scrip from Great Lakes Scrip Center at a discount (and also from local participating businesses), and re-sells the certificates to families like yours for full face value. The discount ‑ from two to fifteen percent or more – is our organization’s revenue. Scrip is "shopping cart fundraising” Scrip is a popular fundraiser because families don’t have to sell anything. Organization members produce revenue by making regular household purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip. Find Out More The order form is on the bulletin board and has a sample of retailers that participate in the Scrip program. There is a complete list of all retailers (over 500) in an envelope outside the church office. Please feel free to write in other participating retailers not on the form. There are also blank order forms in the envelope. Return completed orders to the envelope, church office, or drop them in the collection plate. Checks should be made out to UMC of MV-Scrip. Orders will be placed on the 1st and 15th of each month. Gift Cards should be received in the church office 5-7 days from the order date. Those who order will be notified when the Gift Cards are received. Informational Meeting? If you are interested in attending an informational meeting regarding the scrip program, please let me know a day/time that works for you! Just give me a call or send an email! Jackie Morrical, Scrip Coordinator 895-6135 [email protected] RAGBRAI Food Booth Sign Up Sign up is beginning for our RAGBRAI Food Booth on July 24, 2015! Sign up here! We are excited to be doing this as we will be participating in this fun day of people visiting our town. We will be tithing 10% of our profits to Mission of Hope as part of our Outreach Ministry. OUTREACH 5 Second Quarter Church Financial News Friends Just a quick note to update you on where our General Fund stands as we pass the half way mark in the Church's fiscal year (the General Fund is the fund that pays our operating expenses such as salaries, utilities, etc.). Historically, we tend to run into the red pretty quickly at the beginning of every year, when expenses are particularly high. As the weather warms up, our monthly income is generally enough to meet our monthly expenses, and we generally hold our own until the Fall, when we start making a dent in the deficit that accumulated at the beginning of the year. We have been quite successful, over the past few years, in arriving at the end of the year within $5,000 of balancing the budget. This is pretty good, considering we have a budget of almost $400,000. These outcomes have not come without a struggle though, as we have had to heavily rely on our "deficit angels" to make substantial contributions at the end of the year in order to achieve this. As of the end of May, 2015, our deficit was approximately $30,000. This was an improvement over last year, when we were in the red by approximately $37,000 at this point. This is partly due to a decrease in our budgeted expenses from last year, and partly due to some very generous donations to the General Fund. So thank you for all that you have contributed to the General Fund in 2015, and please continue to give generously so that we can provide the wonderful staff and facilities that help make our Church such a special place. -Jean Schroeder Mission Moment for Circuit Rider Women at the Well On Thursday evening, July 30th, we have the opportunity to worship again with Women at the Well. As a worship guest, you join in a “ministry of presence.” Just being there says that someone cares. You get to be God’s love, with skin on. In Matthew 25:39, those who visited persons in prison ended up meeting Jesus. That happens at Women of the Well, too. We are permitted to bring up to 6 people, and at this time, we have 6 people signed up. However, we'd like to have 2 alternates, in case 1 or 2 or the 6 can't make it. Men and women are welcome. All guests must be at least 18 years of age. Guests do not need to be members of the church. The worship space is handicap accessible. All guests who come to a prison worship service will need to apply for permission in advance and be approved in order to be admitted. Therefore, if you are interested in participating in this amazing worship opportunity, you will need to sign up now so that the clearance process can be completed in time for our visit on July 30th. Interested in being an alternate? Please contact Nancy Reasland at 319-321-2087, or [email protected]. She needs to hear from you by June 30th. Mission of Hope Mark your calendars! Our next opportunity to serve at the Mission of Hope is Wednesday, August 5th. We need volunteers for food preparation and serving, organizing donations in the food pantry, tying blankets with the patrons, and sorting/hanging clothing in the Clothes Closet. This is one last opportunity to get your whole family involved in service before school starts! Watch for sign up later in July. 6 Everest Vacation Bible School Conquering Challenges with God's Mighty Power Sunday, July 12th to Thursday, July 16th 6:00 - 8:35 PM Children 4 years of age (by 7/1/15) through those entering 5th grade are welcome. To anyone who would like to have a Japanese high school student come and stay with them for 10 days this summer… Konichiwa! My name is Devin Kelso. My wife, Hir oe, and I ar e continuing a pr ogr am we star ted 9 year s ago in which some of our students will come to the Mt. Vernon- Lisbon area and spend 10 days studying English and learning a little about how people on the other side of the world live. General overview: I am a Mt. Vernon High School graduate living in Japan. I get homesick, so my wife and I decided to bring our worlds closer together. More importantly, we hope American families and Japanese students will enjoy and grow from the experience of meeting and getting to know each other. HOW IT WORKS: From July 22th to August 4th a Japanese student, 15 to 17 years old, would stay with you. Meal money and spending money is provided. Every week-day is taken up with English study and program activities. In addition, we will take these students to St. Louis for three days during the stay. We also plan a barbeque for all host families the first Monday of the visit. Your commitment, therefore, involves some breakfasts, some evenings, and weekend days to enjoy as you please. Scheduling conflicts can be worked out. A stipend is given to each family to help with any additional expenses. It’s hard to believe this will be the 10th anniversary of the Kelso Heartland Homestay Program. A total of 110 Japanese students have been welcomed into the homes of Mt. Vernon and Lisbon families. Lives have been enriched, memories have been made, relationships have been forged that continue to this day. HOST FAMILIES NEEDED ! On Saturday evening, June 13, Fellowship Hall was buzzing with trying new Salvadoran food, listening to the North Liberty UMC Latino Praise Band, learning more about the immigration process, and seeing a video of and hearing about the people in Gabriel Guardado’s neighborhood. The MVUMC Peace and Justice Ministry team served pupusas and Maria Louisa cake to a packed house. Many thanks to all of you who came to share, pray for, and celebrate Gabi and Amy’s continuing journey toward Gabi’s legal permanent residency and ultimate U.S. citizenship. The evening was one of fellowship and learning, but also it was a benefit to raise funds for the five steps Gabi must go through in this process, each one accompanied by a fee of between $400-$600. The last step will necessitate a trip back to El Salvador for an interview with the American Consulate. We feel blessed to be able to announce that many generous hearts bought tickets or gave donations which totaled nearly $3,000 for the evening! All the funds for the food and the band were also donated. We also have a great joy to share! Gabriel and Amy just got word this week that Gabi’s application as part of Step 1 has been approved! God is good! Next they move on to Step 2 - submitting an application and fee to the National Visa Center for $445. They have an appointment with their attorney on July 1st to get started on the next step. After that, the letters will be submitted in step 3. These are the letters of support from our church, the neighborhood, Gabi’s customers at the restaurant, Cornell College where he spoke to classes, friends in faith….even from Bishop Trimble! We have 42 letters to send thus far! Please continue to pray for and express support to Amy and Gabi as this process continues. ---UMCMV Peace and Justice Ministry Team Thank you to all those who helped, attended or donated in regards to the Gabi’s Journey Benefit in Fellowship Hall on June 13! 10 July 2015 Worship Assistants July 5th at 8:30am July 5th at 10:15am East Door Greeters: Stella Pata West Door Greeters: Brian & Teresa Bothell West Door Greeters: Briesemeisters & Darrel & Donna Jordan Worship Assistants: Trude Elliott Lector: Marissa Cranston Nursery: NO COMMUNION Slide Presenter: Diane Legore Communion: Worship Assistants: Coffee Host: Nursery: Communion Slide Presenter: East Door Greeters: July 12th at 8:30am East Door Greeters: West Door Greeters: July 12th @ 10:15am Worship Assistants: Kamaus Family Todd & Kathy Norton Mike & Sue Gradwell & Kamaus Family Nursery: Kim Schwiebert Slide Presenter: Diane Legore July 19th at 8:30am East Door Greeters: West Door Greeters: Worship Assistants: Lector: Nursery: Slide Presenter: Coffee Host: Ron & Stephanie Frantz West Door Greeters: Worship Assistants: Todd & Lisa White West Door Greeters: Hoffman & Hotz Families Worship Assistants: Lector: Marissa Cranston Nursery: Slide Presenter: Bonnie Wikstrom Coffee Host: Slide Presenter: Jan White & Bonnie Keith Engelbrecht Family LaFollette & Pisarik Families Judy Stine Cindy Strong Trude Elliott Ann Booth July 19th at 10:15am East Door Greeters: Nursery: TBD Marge Gaines & Dodie Rilett Pisarik & McWilliams Families Nancy Thomas Brittany Booth Jackie Morrical NO COMMUNION July 26th at 8:30am East Door Greeters: Mike & Karen Stewart Marge Gaines & Dodie Rilett Morrical Family Ruth Miller Brittany Booth Cot Graber Jackie Engelbrecht July 26th at 10:15am East Door Greeters: West Door Greeters: Matt & Teresa Stewart Brian & Teresa Bothell Worship Assistants: Alison Dix, Nyla McCall, Nancy Reasland & Ruth Nursery: Amy Jackson Slide Presenter: Diane Legore East Door Greeters: West Door Greeters: Jan White & Bonnie Keith Engelbrecht Family Worship Assistants: Lector: Nursery: Slide Presenter: Nydegger Family Kristi Keast Brittany Booth Dick Jacob Marty Sinclair & Cindy Strong Coffee Host: 11 United Methodist Church of Mount Vernon 304 First Street W Mount Vernon, IA 52314 RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED United Methodist Church of Mount Vernon Staff Stop by our HERITAGE DAYS Food Booth from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday July 11!
