Richmond has a wide range of services and programs to help seniors lead healthy
and independent lives. This directory has information about health services and
other programs and services available to seniors who live in Richmond.
This directory has been produced through a partnership between Volunteer
Richmond Information Services and The Richmond Review. Thanks to The
Richmond Review’s support of senior services in our community, this directory is

Responsible for investigating allegations of abuse, neglect, and
self-neglect of adults living in the Richmond community. Applies
to adults who are unable to seek support and assistance due to
physical disabilities, illness, disease, injury, or any other condition
that affects decision-making.

Interpreters are qualified community and medical interpreters.

Free nicotine patch or gum for 12 weeks per calendar year for
eligible BC residents. (There may be coverage for stop smoking
medications through Fair PharmaCare.)
Communicable Disease and Harm Reduction
Provides health promotion, prevention of diseases, health
protection, education, surveillance, and management of infectious
and non-infectious diseases. Gilwest Clinic provides HIV and
Hepatitis C follow-up, consultation, testing, contact tracing,
education, and treatment services for adults who are residents of
Richmond. Provides all school, influenza immunization, immunization
of adults, and immunization of all high-risk individuals or groups.

appointments and group sessions for people learning to live with

Offers programs, education, and resources to assist Richmond
residents in preventing and self-managing their chronic conditions
and in improving their quality of life. Developed as a partnership
between Richmond Health Services and the City of Richmond, many
community and health agencies offer the programs at the Wellness
Centre. Programs include chronic disease management, respiratory
clinic, diabetes education, exercise programs, cooking groups,
nutrition classes, and support groups.

Offers a Therapeutic Activity program every weekday for adults with
health problems. Adults can enjoy healthy activities and contact with
other people under the supervision of health care professionals.
Runs from 9:00am to 2:30pm and includes lunch and snacks. Call
Richmond Continuing Health for a referral or call the Centre directly.

Arranges home support for those unable to care for themselves
due to health problems. Also arranges adult day care and respite
services. Assists in finding alternative living arrangements for those
who can no longer live independently at home. There is a cost for
some services.
Home Care Nursing and Rehabilitation

Nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists provide
services to those whose needs can safely be met while they remain
at home. Arranges home support for those who need help with
daily tasks. Offers nursing, and rehabilitation consultation and
support to care providers and adult clients who have multiple
physical and cognitive disabilities.
Home Support

Provides help with daily tasks for people who have ongoing health
problems, disabilities, or temporary medical or physical problems.
Case managers and professional care staff arrange home support.
Community health workers follow the plan developed by the case
mangers. Service is delivered by neighbourhood teams within a
time frame that is focused on completing the required tasks. The
cost of service varies.
Long Term Care Facilities

Residential care homes offer 24-hour care and supervision for
adults who can no longer live independently. To be admitted,
individuals must meet the criteria for complex care. Waiting period
is approximately six months. There are five complex care homes in
Richmond, including Fraserview Immediate Care, Pinegrove Place,
Richmond Lions Manor, Rosewood Manor, and Minoru Residence.
There is one residential home for younger, disabled people, usually
under 65: Steveston Residence.

A program developed to support people with any stage of hip
or knee osteoarthritis through assessment and education. The
assessment team, which includes physiotherapy, occupational
therapy, and nursing, will work with you to assess your needs,
develop an action plan and access services in your community. This
assessment requires a physician referral.
Subsidized Assisted Living

Includes rental accommodations, hospitality services, and personal
care for seniors with low to moderate incomes that need help with
personal care. Offers a living arrangement with communal meals
and social activities. Clients must be assessed and are eligible if
they receive home support services, are able to make decisions
about daily activities and needs, and are able to communicate and
be understood by others, but are not managing well in their home
with available services. Waiting period is twelve months. The two
locations are the Courtyard Gardens and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Austin
Harris Residence.

provide grocery shopping assistance for seniors and others with
long term health problems to maintain their independence and

of volunteer shopping available at no cost provided by trained

Individual and Personal Shopping.

public education forums and workshops regarding healthy aging,
including mental health issues and the use of alcohol and drugs.

residences and other public venues in Richmond and Vancouver.

Acute Home Based Treatment Program (AHBT)
An ‘at home’ treatment option (including shelters) that offer a
choice of treatment ‘at home’ instead of in hospital. Clients must
be 17 years of age or older with a mental illness, who currently
require acute care, intensive treatment and support or they are at
risk of requiring psychiatric hospitalization. Access to the program
is by referral only by a medical professional in the hospital or in the
community.

An Addictions and Primary Care outpatient clinic that treats clients
with complex addictions. Consists of a multi-disciplinary team
including a psychiatrist, two general practitioners, and an internist
who also specializes in addictions, a counsellor, and a social worker.
Many of the clients receiving services also receive primary medical
services at the clinic. Refers to other services such as residential
care, detox, other outpatient addiction services, and hospital and
outpatient mental health services.

Community based assessment and treatment for older adults with
dementia-related behaviour problems or psychiatric and medical
needs requiring multidisciplinary care including case management
and rehabilitation services. Family support and education are also

care facilities, and other community programs. Services are provided
on an outreach basis.

Chimo Community Services offers a counselling service to people
who are experiencing a crisis, who are at risk of suicide, or who have
made a suicide attempt. Counselling service is available to those
ages 19 and older. Limited counselling for those under 19 is also
available. Offers a support group for those who have lost a friend or
family member to suicide.

An 18-bed inpatient psychiatry unit providing assessment and
treatment to adults with psychiatric diagnoses who require 24 hour
management in hospital. Staffed by an interdisciplinary team who
work with the patient, their family, and community supports to
provide individualized patient-centred care. Discharge planning may
include a referral to community resources for follow up.
Mental Health Emergency Services (MHES)

A mobile service providing community assessment and intervention
to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. Services include
assessments, referrals to follow-up mental health services, health
care professionals, or other agencies. Evening and weekend
intervention and support are provided to individuals during nonoffice hours through the crisis line. Hours of operation are 11:00am
to 1:00am, seven days a week.

Addictions Housing
For disposal of used needles in a safe and legal way to reduce
the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C and to prevent other health
complications. Reduces the number of needles in public places and
the incidence of needle-stick injuries. Encourages safer injecting
practices by providing sterile water, alcohol wipes, and health
information. Services are provided in a safe and non-judgmental
manner. Clean needles are available. Locations are at City Centre
Health (8160 Cook Road, Richmond, 604-233-5699) and Richmond
Public Health (8100 Granville Avenue, Richmond, 604-233-3150).
Provides housing services to individuals with severe and persistent
mental health conditions. Includes Licensed Specialized Residential
Care Facilities, Enhanced Supported Housing, and Supported
Independent Living placements.
Richmond Mental Health Outpatient

Friends Society. Provides a peer support program for mental health
consumers. Provides funding which increases the effectiveness of
the mental health system while helping mental health consumers

Provides a variety of services for those who have alcohol, drug,
and gambling problems. Assists family members and others who
are affected by substance misuse. Services include individual
counselling, an education program, therapy groups, relapse
prevention, public education presentations, seminars and
workshops, prevention and community outreach programs and
services, and older adult services.
RICHMOND HOSPITAL
Vancouver Coastal Health - Richmond
– Richmond Hospital
A 10-bed residential short stay crisis intervention facility for clients
experiencing a mental health crisis but do not require acute
psychiatric hospitalization. Clients are cared for 24 hours a day,
7 days a week and can be admitted for a maximum of 14 days.
Provides an environment where clients can learn new skills to better
manage their illness. Referrals require a physician assessment prior
to acceptance and are screened prior to admission to ensure the
facility is able to provide safe care.

Palliative Care
Offers support for people living with a terminal illness. Focus is on
providing comfort, quality of life and symptom control rather than
cure. The Integrated Hospice Palliative Care program provides end
of life care. Staff follow the client from home to the palliative care
unit, to the hospice or residential care facility.

to learn about liver disease and its management. Seminars are
conducted by speakers in local communities that cover topics such
as liver and liver disease, viral hepatitis, healthy eating, psychology
and coping with illness, transplantation, and alternative
therapies.
The Library
Carries materials on all forms of liver disease. Provides internet
access to people looking for further information about liver
disease. All persons, whether they have a liver disease or are a
health care provider, can access the library by becoming a library
member. Books, manuals, videos, and papers are available for
borrowing. Printed information from the library is also available.

Pathways Clubhouse
Helps members recover from mental illness and reclaim their lives
through an environment that focuses on the person’s strengths and

feel alone. Whether a client wants to watch a movie, play a game,
or simply have a conversation, the visitor will be there to offer a
listening ear and a friendly face. This is a free service offered in a
variety of languages depending on the availability of volunteers.

Trained volunteers, ages 55 and older, offer free individual
counselling to support their peers through difficult situations such
as new living arrangements, relationship concerns, reduced income,
bereavement, anxiety, or depression. Sessions take place at the

from individuals or health care providers, and are screened.
Counsellors see clients for up to 6 months, after which a referral
may be made to other services. Services are offered in a variety of
languages depending on the availability of volunteers. Funded by

Trained volunteers provide free information and referral regarding
community services for seniors ages 55 and older. Assists seniors in
navigating through government systems and in filling out application
forms. Topics include pensions, income tax, citizenship and
permanent residency, medical plan, PharmaCare, legal resources,
housing, shelter aid for renters, and more. Service is accessible in
a variety of language depending on the availability of volunteers.
The Seniors Information Line is available to answer questions about
benefits and entitlements.
