2011 NJCAA Division II
Pre-Season Poll
The 2011 edition of Iowa Central Baseball is ready to hit the field. Coming off
another outstanding season in 2010, the Tritons are ready to take to the
diamond again looking to improve upon the 4th place finish at the 2010
NJCAA II World Series.
Once again the Tritons will play a highly competitive schedule. With the opening
games cancelled due to the Metrodome roof collapsing, the baseball team will
open up in Kansas City versus perennial power Maple Woods. A long weekend to
Millington, Tennessee, is next with the Tritons heading to Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina, for their annual week long spring trip in mid-March. Then it will be back
to Iowa for the ICCAC conference play.

includes 4 NJCAA II World Series appearances, 6 Region XI championships, and 4 Northwest/North Plains District championships. The Tritons
finished as the National Runner-up in 2003 and 4th place in both 2004
and 2010 at the NJCAA II World Series.
He has won numerous Coach of the Year awards. This includes being
named the 2003 NJCAA II National Coach of the Year. Pederson has also

School from 1996-1997. Pederson specializes in coaching hitting and
outfielders for Iowa Central.
A graduate of local Fort Dodge Senior High, he played at Iowa Central in
1992-93 earning First Team All-American honors as an infielder in 1993.
He then continued his playing career at Grand View College. Pederson was

seasons. After his sophomore season, he was named a 2nd Team All-Region player as a pitcher. Following his playing days at Iowa Central,

Iowa Central Baseball
2010 SEASON REVIEW
The team headed into the Region XI tournament as the #3 seed. They opened up with a strong 11-3 victory over Ellsworth CC. Joey
Flattery threw a 3-hitter and Nick Johnson hit a grand slam in the first inning to ignite the offense. The game ended early due to the
8-run mercy rule.
Next up was Southeastern CC. Cox was excellent in throwing 8.1 innings of shutout baseball. David Borchardt collected 3 hits and
drove in 2. Keele and Eric Swain each homered. The win put Iowa Central as the only unbeaten team left in the tournament.
Iowa Central had to play Southeastern CC again in the next round. This time Rimer threw a complete game for a 6-4 victory. The
Tritons’ defense turned 3 double plays to key the win. Keele and Swain homered again and Judkins drove in 2.
The Region XI championship pitted Iowa Central vs. Ellsworth CC. Siefken threw 7 strong innings and then got some relief help from
Borchardt in a 12-6 win. After falling behind early, the Tritons stormed back with the help of Leadley’s 3 RBI and Johnson’s 10th home
run of the season. The win wrapped up the 11th Region XI championship in the past 15 years.
The next round of tournament was the North Plains District tournament in Miles City, Montana. The Tritons would have to beat Miles
CC and Williston College out of North Dakota. Iowa Central opened with the host Miles CC. After taking a 6 run lead, the Tritons put
the game away in the 8th inning with 8 more runs. Cox picked up the win with relief help from Cory Buckley. Swain drove in 4 and
Borchardt and Johnson each drove in 3. All 3 hit home runs with Swain’s being a grand slam.
Game 2 was a blowout as Iowa Central blasted Williston by the score of 11-1. Joey Flattery threw a complete game 2 hitter. Keele
hit his school record-tying 17th home run of the season. Six of the nine Triton hitters collected 2 hits each with Keele and Johnson
driving in 3.
The tournament clincher was a 10-3 win over Miles CC. After falling behind 3-0 early, the offense scored 10 runs over their final 5 atbats to win the tournament. Johnson and Borchardt each drove in 2 runs. The win sent the Tritons onto their 9th trip to the NJCAA II
World Series in Enid, Oklahoma. The 9th trip tied the national record for appearances with Grand Rapids CC.
2010 World Series
Enid, Oklahoma
Game 1 at the World Series was a nail-biter versus Vincennes College from Indiana. With the game tied at 4 in the 8th, Keele singled
with one out to get the momentum on Iowa Central’s side. After being balked to second base, Keele stole third on the next pitch. The
throw down to third sailed wide and into leftfield which allowed Keele to score the go ahead run. Siefken was brilliant in relief sitting
down the final 7 guys in order including striking out the side in the 9th. Colwell drove in 2 runs to lead the offense.
The win sent Iowa Central into the second round versus Avery Point CC from Connecticut. The Tritons were in control the entire contest
in winning 9-1. Joey Flattery and Buckley combined for a 2 hitter and struck out 10 in 8 innings of work. Leadley, Judkins, and
Borchardt each had 2 hits and Borchardt and Swain each drove in 2.
The 2010 season started as an opportunity to rebound from a disappointing 2009 season and ended up with a national record-tying
performance. The 2010 Tritons finished with a 50-17 record and stormed their way through the post-season to a 4th place finish at
the NJCAA II World Series.
The Triton nine opened the season with a doubleheader sweep over Oakton CC, out of Illinois, in the Metrodome. Iowa Central opened
with a 6-2 win and followed that up with a 12-4 sweep. Andy Cox and Drew Ghelfi picked up the wins on the mound. Jon Flattery went
4-4 with 3 RBI to lead all hitters in game 1. Nick Judkins collected 3 hits and Nick Colwell drove in 3 to lead the hit parade in game 2.
Iowa Central then took a long weekend trip to Millington, Tennessee, for 5 games. The Tritons ended up 4-1 on the trip. The lone
setback was to the defending national champions. The pitching was lead by a combined shutout from Joey Flattery and Andy Yetzer,
a 1 hit 9 strikeout performance from Aaron Siefken, and a 5 inning shutout from Derek Hovick. On the weekend, Ryan Keele collected 10 hits and Judkins drove in 12 to lead the Tritons offense.
Next up for the team was the annual spring trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Over the course of the week long trip, the Tritons
posted an 8-2 record. Iowa Central opened with a 6-4 win over Lackawanna CC, out of Pennsylvania, which avenged a 2009 loss. The
trip also saw the Tritons knock off Mercer CC, out of New Jersey, twice to avenge another 2009 loss. At the conclusion of the trip, the
Tritons returned to Iowa with a 14-3 record.
Conference play was set to open upon the return to Iowa. The Tritons visited Kirkwood first. The Tritons dropped the first game but
answered back by taking the final 3 games of the series. Following a mid-week sweep of Maple Woods CC, the wins kept coming in
a 4 game conference sweep of Iowa Lakes. Joey Flattery and Allen Rimer combined to allow 3 runs in the Saturday doubleheader.
This was followed up by Cox and Derek Hovick combining to only allow 2 runs in the Sunday doubleheader.
Following 6 more non-conference wins, the Tritons saw their 15 game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Ellsworth in the
first game of the series. With clutch hitting and incredible outfield play by centerfielder Tyler Leadley, Iowa Central bounced back and
won the final 3 games of the series. The Tritons now stood with a 32-5 overall record and 10-2 in conference play.
The Tritons then went 4-2 versus Indian Hills and Marshalltown heading into the final 3 weeks of conference play. The Tritons hit a
cold streak as then went 4-8 over their next 12 conference games. The final regular season record stood at 41-15 and 14-10 in conference play.
Next up for Iowa Central was the #1 ranked Western Oklahoma team. Western Oklahoma steam-rolled Iowa Central 12-1. The loss
knocked the Tritons into the losers’ bracket, and a game with LSU-Eunice.
LSU-Eunice knocked the Tritons out of the tournament with a sound 15-4
victory. The team from Louisiana would eventually go on to win the national championship. Keele and Judkins collected 2 hits each and Judkins
drove in 2.
The 2010 season ended with the Tritons recording a 50-17 season and a 4th
place finish at the NJCAA II World Series. The team broke numerous team and
individual records in completing only the 3rd 50-win season in college history.
Judkins was named to the First Team All-Regional squad. Keele and Colwell
made the second team. Cox and Leadley earned honorable mention. Judkins
was also named to the All-North Plains District team and earned Third Team
All-American honors, along with winning the Gold Glove award as one of the
top defensive players in the country.
Academically the 2010 team was very successful as well. As a team, they
earned a 3.10 team GPA which placed them 10th overall amongst all junior
college baseball teams nationally. Colwell and Buckley were honored as being
Academic All-Americans.
Many of the sophomores have now moved onto 4-year colleges and universities to continue their academics and baseball careers. These include Cory
Buckley, University of Nebraska Omaha; Nick Colwell, North Dakota St.
University; Andy Cox, Austin Peay University; Nick Johnson, Bethune-Cookman
University; Nick Judkins, Creighton University; Ryan Keele, Northwestern St.
University; Jake Kurth, Augustana College; Tyler Leadley, Coe College; and
Aaron Siefken, Bethany Lutheran College.
