Pet Network

Letter from the Director
One of the most difficult aspects of putting together this newsletter is trying to narrow
down to a few pages what could often be a full-length novel worth of amazing stories that
our supporters would love to hear.
Pet Network’s 2013 was a remarkable year. We completed significant and much-needed
repairs on our building and will continue to work through additional repairs this year as well.
With major overhauls needed in virtually every area of the shelter we certainly have our
work cut out for us!
While repairs certainly engaged a significant part of our efforts, as always, our fondest
memories of the year were the hundreds of animals we saw go to loving homes. From our
world-famous Dumpster Puppies to lesser known but equally awesome rescue stories,
2013 proved to be a very moving year.
One little dog who particularly touched my heart is Faith. Faith is a beautiful little grey
and black terrier who came to us from deplorable conditions. Her owners were allegedly
manufacturing drugs and using Faith and a group of innocent dogs to alert them to
strangers. These dogs were never allowed outside, had apparently never felt the wind on
their coats or even walked on grass. Animal control found Faith in a room of knee-high
trash. Amongst the trash and debris, tucked under a filthy box they found a heartbreaking
(and at the same time heartwarming) surprise, puppies. Faith fiercely protected her pups
when they were found, and in the animal control facility she was moved to. Caring staff
knew that Faith needed a much quieter environment and called Pet Network for help.
Faith and her babies, like thousands before her, and thousands more to come, received a
second chance at Pet Network.
These animals depend not only on the care and dedication of our staff, but on Pet
Network’s supporters who continue to make our life-saving work possible. So please, take
a moment to look through this newsletter and not only enjoy our “tails of triumph,” but
to reflect on how your support has impacted more than 10,000 animals and completed
families for more than 20 years.
We invite you to keep up with our day to day activities through Facebook, Twitter and our
website. Links to all of our social media can be found at www.petnetwork.org, while there
don’t forget to sign up for our enewsletter!
We thank you. We appreciate you. We honor your generosity and dedication to Pet
Network Humane Society and the animals in our care.
Sincerely,
Becky Goodman, Executive Director

Remembering
CHRIS ELLIOT
Chris Elliott was a true friend and supporter of not only Pet
Network Humane Society, but animals in general. He picked up
his love of all things furry, from his loving mother, Denise.
Chris, having just moved to the Tahoe area, immediately found
Pet Network and began to volunteer his time and efforts. An avid
outdoorsman, Chris took our highest energy dogs on hikes that
were sometimes hours long.
Soon enough, despite his best efforts, Chris fell in love with a
high-energy dog named Alpine. Alpine had boundless energy and
immediately bonded with Chris on their hikes. Chris having been
warned about the sneaky charms of Pet Network dogs, walked
in utterly defeated and told staff that, as he feared, he was wonover by Alpine and needed to adopt him.
Chris, with Alpine at his side, continued to come in and walk
our dogs faithfully every week.
A few weeks ago a policeman showed up at Pet Network, with
a distraught Alpine at his side. While Alpine was stuck helpless in the house, Chris was assaulted and killed
outside his home. Our staff was heartbroken.
Alpine came back to Pet Network, confused and anxious to see his beloved owner again.
Even after his passing, Chris Elliott continued to help Pet Network’s animals. His family and friends have
contributed thousands of dollars to Pet Network in Chris’s memory, truly honoring his love of animals and
the organization that gave him his best friend, Alpine. In addition Chris’s girlfriend immediately contacted
Pet Network and told us she would give Alpine the home Chris would have wanted.
Although Chris isn’t with us, his memory and passion live on at Pet Network Humane Society. We send
our sincerest condolences to his friends, family and coworkers who have so generously honored his
memory through their donations.
North Lake Tahoe Fire
Protection District rocks
(as if we need to tell you that)! Not only do these
amazing folks keep us safe and cared for, but
they also have a soft spot for our furry friends as
well!
Recently our friends got respiration devices
to help resuscitate dogs and cats that may be
victims of smoke inhalation and fire disasters.
THANK YOU to our friends at North Lake
Tahoe Fire Protection District for recognizing that
our four legged friends are part of the family!

Can You Help?
We’re Looking for Our Forever Homes
MEIKO
MEIKO
Meiko is a mature and striking
Bengal/Tabby cat. She enjoys a
quieter setting with lots of petting.
Her eyes and coat are both unique
and beautiful. She is a wonderful
girl with a wonderful personality.
ARIANA
Ariana is another “single mom” looking
for her forever home. As a Bulldog
Blend she has a very short stature and
solid build (and snuffly breathing). She
LOVES people but is particular about
what dogs she likes.
VIOLET
ARIANA
SUNSHINE
SUNSHINE
Sunshine is a very playful and happy dog.
She loves people and seems to especially
love children. She came to us a “single
mother” and has now said goodbye to
all of her pups. She is a strong girl and
tends to play rough with other dogs so a
like-minded dog or single dog household
would be best for her.
VIOLET
Violet’s favorite pastime is
drinking from faucets! She
comes running whenever a
faucet is available (and of course
she sticks around for pets). She
is very laid back, good with other
cats and enjoys looking out at
the dogs in our dog hall as well.
Violet has beautiful medium
length fur and would love to call
your quiet home her own!
Call today to adopt one of these
adorable animals! 775-832-4404
CAN’T ADOPT? If you can not fit one more animal into your home you can still save a life!

TAILS FROM THE WORKPLACE
For this newsletter’s “Tails from the Shelter” we decided to take a look at a very special and spoiled group of our previously
adopted pets…those lucky dogs (and cats) that get to go to work with their owners! Advice: Make sure you drop this newsletter
off on your bosses desk we would LOVE to get more pictures of our pets “at work.”
SHELBY
Many years ago, when Pet Network first opened the doors to our brand new
shelter, Linda Finch came in and adopted a feisty and fun pup named Shelby.
Linda and Shelby were constant companions and became even more constant
companions when Linda opened a bookshop in Minden. Shelby faithfully came
into work, greeting guests and keeping watch every day over her busy mom.
These days while Shelby’s Bookshop still has a wonderful array of books…they
had to say goodbye to their namesake who passed away in November of 2013.
Pet Network sends our heartfelt condolences to Linda and thank her from the
bottom of our hearts for providing Shelby such an amazing home!
John and Ashley
Brimm, owners of
our much-loved
Austin’s Restaurant
in Incline Village
bring their two Pet
Network adoptees
to work with them
almost every day.
Wrangler and Reef
are wonderfully
happy Mastiff’s who
love spending time in the restaurant office with mom
and dad. Can we say lucky pups? Can you imagine the
leftovers! We are guessing these two eat like kings!
WRANGLER & REEF
SPIKE
When Linda and Mike Sullivan
decided they wanted a furry
companion for their business,
Lake Tahoe Lockshop, they
knew where to come. Staff told
them about a wonderful, feisty
orange and white cat named
Spike who had not only been at Pet Network an extended
period of time, but who really needed to be an only child
since he tended to bully other cats in our colony. They came
down the next day and fell in love. Spike now spends his
days greeting customers and supervising Linda and Mike’s
work around the shop. It turns out our boy is quite smart and
has learned to come, sit and even sit up to get his treats.
JACK BROWN & CAPONE
Saundra and Jeff Whit adopted two of our most adorable senior dogs together.
Jack Brown and Capone, kennel mates at Pet Network got along so well that
Saundra and Jeff didn’t have the heart to split them up. Now when Jeff goes to
work at Empire Contractors and Snow Removal, the happy dogs get to come to
work with him. They love being outdoors and around the jobs together almost
as much as Jeff loves having them with him!
4
Freckles
Brodie aka Dobbs
Brenda Duncan was
looking for a puppy
that touched her heart
and when she saw
Freckles she knew
she found the perfect
match. Freckles came
to Pet Network from
a methamphetamine
manufacturing house
after the occupants were arrested. She and her siblings,
who were only days old, along with their mom found a
safe haven at Pet Network. Freckles is now living the
dream…cuddles, play and happy days.
Sandy Scarsella and Ed Boleky knew a few things “for
certain” after losing their beloved Dobermans.
• They weren’t going to adopt another dog for at least a
few years.
• They were NOT going to adopt a puppy
• They would NOT be adopting a Doberman or Doberman
mix
And then they met Dobbs and all of their certainties went
right out the window. Instead, they happily went back on
every promise they made and immediately adopted our
amazing Dumpster Puppy who…was most definitely a
puppy and was predominantly Doberman. Best decision
ever! Dobbs keeps the busy pair even busier and the Pet
Network staff loves getting the constant updates from
Scottsdale!
Mikey aka Denali
When you have two adorable look-alike Chihuahuas a
third seems like a lot to take on. So when your mom
and boyfriend confirm it would be “just too much”
you fold right? Actually, what you do is mull over it
for a few days and tell them that no matter what…
you need that pup. What you don’t know is that your
mom and boyfriend have been plotting against you
the entire time. Secretly they have adopted the pup
behind your back! Then you get the happiest surprise
ever…THREE adorable pups who look alike and adore
each other! Congrats Mikki Merkouris (adopter), Karen
McOmber (sneaky mom) and Donnie White (awesome
boyfriend)!

Memorial
Donations
Many of us have experienced losing
someone close to us. A parent, child,
grandparent or friend or even a beloved
pet. As animal lovers many of us tend
to surround ourselves with fellow
animal lovers. You can opt to have
your loved one or yourself remembered
by passing on the gift of love and life.
Many of our members have chosen
to have donations directed to the Pet
Network in lieu of or in addition to
the traditional gift of flowers. We will
recognize your memorial donation
in our quarterly newsletter, and send
personal letters of thanks to the
individuals who donated, as well as
sending donation acknowledgments
to the family member of your choice.
Please feel free to use this Memorial
Donation form, or we will gladly send
you one by email or mail.

Special Thanks!
One thing every nonprofit can tell you is that raising funds is tough. To that end we owe a huge debt of
gratitude to the many businesses who have helped us make Rescue Roast a wild success!
Alpen Sierra Coffee – Our friends at Alpen Sierra Coffee made Rescue Roast a
reality! By working with us and allowing us the flexibility we needed to get off the
ground, Alpen truly ensured we had a running start at success. We are so lucky to have
such an outstanding partner who takes such pride in their work! Alpen Sierra coffee is
delicious!
Sierra Le Bone Located in Carson City our friends Jan and Fran
were more than happy to help us with our retail sales of Rescue Roast!
These lovely ladies are not only supportive…but customers as well!
Rescue Roast is now the only coffee they drink! Thanks ladies!
Natural Paws Lori and Rob, owners of Natural Paws in Reno have
also stepped up to the plate to help us sell our Rescue Roast coffee!
Now Natural Paws is not only a wonderful “Adoption Spot” for Pet

Pet Network staff has new friends to thank in our efforts to save
lives! Quail Ridge Animal Hospital is participating in our Adopt-aPet at the Vet Program. In a few short months their phenomenal
staff has placed more than 20 cats and kittens into homes. There
are simply not enough words to express our gratitude to this
hospital and their staff. Customers who visit the clinic are never
surprised to walk in and find staff carrying one of Pet Network’s
adoptable kitties. The amount of love and attention given to our
adoptable animals while at Quail Ridge is unparalleled. Thank you
to the indomitable Dr. Hewitt, Practice Manager, Melinda and the
entire Quail Ridge staff.

Greetings from the
GROOMER!
Boarders of
the Quarter:
As you may know, Pet Network offers full service grooming.
Our talented groomer, Jessica, is ready for your most challenging
grooming needs! Cat grooming, AKC breed cuts, hand scissoring…
whatever your needs Jessica can make your pet look amazing!
Due to the extremely high demand for Jessica’s services we are
happy to announce that she has taken on an apprentice! Becca,
from Pet Network’s animal care staff is now training to be our second
amazing groomer! Jessica & Becca look forward to making your pet
look fabulous!
Marcie and Snowcap Pesetski
Marcie and Snowcap can be found, almost every
day, at Pet Nework’s Doggy Daycare. They come
to play, while their dedicated momma, Loretta,
goes to work. Marcie is the playgroup “regulator”
caring and playing for all the dogs in the playgroup
and protecting new dogs or puppies if they get
overwhelmed. At four years old, Marcie is still very
puppy-like and loves to run, roll and roughhouse
with everyone during play. Marcie and her brother,
Snowcap are very talkative both in their kennel
and during group play. Snowcap is kept in check
by Marcie anytime he tries to “be the boss”, but
he takes it in stride. Both Marcie and Snowcap
are wonderful additions to Pet Network’s daycare
program and we thank their mom for sharing them
with us!
Jessica welcomes Summit, a wonderful Tibetan Mastiff to Pet Network for
his first groom.
Did You Know?
Professor Kendra Wong of Sierra Nevada College challenged her students
for their final exams. She gave them $5 and two hours to make as much
money as possible. What the students did next was remarkable! They turned
the $5 into more than $300, donating the funds to Pet Network Humane
Society in memory of Gracie Parada, a beloved pet of one of the participating
students who had passed away the week previous.
Pet Network extends their thanks and deepest respects to the Foundations
of Entrepreneurship class and Kendra Wong for their outstanding creativity
and success!

Maddie’s Fund
Adoption Days 2014
This year’s goal: homes for
10,000+ animals in two days.
How do you save more than
8,000 animals in two days? You
partner with the amazing and
talented Maddie’s Foundation!
Pet Network Humane Society is
honored to once again participate
in Maddie’s Adoption Days,
scheduled this year on May 31st
and June 1st. This unique and
one of a kind event will attempt to
place more than 10,000 animals in
two days.
Who do we have to thank for
this event? Local businessman
and philanthropist extraordinaire,
Dave Duffield and his wife Cheryl,
and their beloved Minature
Schnauzer, Maddie, whose
unconditional love, devotion,
loyalty and spirit inspired her
caregivers to start a charitable
foundation, Maddie’s Fund, in her
name. Pet Network’s staff and
volunteers, along with our partners
at Nevada Humane Society and
Northern Nevada SPCA will be
working tirelessly to make this
year’s event wildly successful.
Not only are all adoption fees
waived for qualified adopters,
but Maddie’s Fund will make a
donation to Pet Network for every
animal successfully adopted into a
loving home.
Thank you Maddie’s Fund for
your unparalleled dedication to
animals in need!

Volunteers of the Quarter
Heidi Brieder & Linda Crowell
We would like to recognize the outstanding contributions of two of our great volunteers,
Linda Crowell and Heidi Brieder.
Linda has been a long-term volunteer for Pet Network and is one of our most reliable and
wonderful event assistants. Linda always answers the call for Pet Network, and is a key
volunteer for both the Fur Ball and Purses for Pets. Additionally, she participates in Strut
Your Mutt every year, and, well…I don’t think Linda has ever said “no” when Pet Network
needed her!
Our second Volunteer of the Quarter is Heidi Brieder. Heidi is a teacher in our community,
as well as a wonderful foster mom! When Heidi heard that Pet Network needed help with
some bottle feeding puppies that were left in a dumpster, she immediately called. Heidi
not only got up every hour to feed her little man, Otter, but she enlisted the help of her
daughters as well. Heidi spent almost eight weeks caring for our little pup and it is the
highlight of her day when we send her picture updates of Otter in his new home.
We thank both of these amazing volunteers for their contributions to Pet Network and the
animals in our care!
Team Spotlight
Jessica Saar
Jessica Saar has been with Pet Network for
almost three years. If she looks familiar it could be
because Pet Network is just one of several jobs our
hardworking girl has. Growing up with all sorts of
animals on her family’s farm, Jessica was a natural
fit for Pet Network. Last year Jessica adopted Kato,
a wonderfully goofy Rottie who lumbers through
the halls of Pet Network like he owns the place (and
who, we might add, has his momma wrapped around
his big paw). Jessica brings smiles and laughter to
everyone she works with and is a wonderful asset to
the Pet Network family!

Pet Network Events: Past, Present & Future!
05.18.14 Spring Cleaning Crew
at Pet Network’s shelter!
Join us for a Spring cleaning event at our
shelter. After ten years and thousands of
animals saved, our shelter needs a bit of
elbow grease and TLC. We are looking for
10-15 people to spend a few hours doing
some seriously dirty work (scrubbing walls,
floors, raking, moving heavy items etc!) Due
to the type of work and chemicals being
used we ask that no children participate
in this cleanup event. Event will be from
1-3 pm…don’t forget your rubber gloves!
If interested please email bgoodman@

Maddie’s Adoption Days
Join the staff of Pet Network as we
help Maddie’s Fund and our partner
organizations adopt 10,000 animals across
the nation! Adoption fees are waived for
approved adopters and Maddie’s Fund will
make a donation to Pet Network for every
animal adopted!
06.14.14 16th Annual Fur Ball
Join us at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe
Grand Ballroom. This incredible event sells
out every year and features free wine and
champagne, amazing silent and live auction
items, dinner, dancing and incredible
stories of the life-saving work you help
make possible!
July Strut Your Mutt
Each year on the day of the Red, White
and Tahoe Blue Parade, Pet Network
gathers together a team of alumni, current
adoptable animals and volunteers to walk
in the parade. Two legged walkers get a
wonderful Strut Your Mutt t-shirt and two
legged walkers get a festive bandana.

Adoption events
Pet Network is constantly “on the road.”
Look at our website for various offsite
adoption events in Carson City, Reno and
S. Lake Tahoe! In addition if you live in
Carson City or Gardnerville, you can visit
Quail Ridge Animal Hospital to see some
of our adorable cats and kittens that are
available for adoption. In Sparks we have
animals available at PetSmart and will soon
be adding a Pet Supermarket adoption
location as well!
