Who we are
W
e are a vibrant organization that empowers women in transition
by providing relevant programs, services and resources. We help
women build confidence and skills so they can participate more fully in
our community. In 2010-2011, we assisted over 1,200 women to build
better futures for themselves and their families.
Our strength lies in our rootedness in community and in building the
collaborative partnerships that create more opportunities for women
in transition. What we are able to achieve as an organization is directly
related to our committed and talented volunteers and staff members,
donors and community partners and we continue to develop
new ways to deepen the impact of our services.
What’s new
D
Yes, we’re
OPEN
uring our 2010-2011 fiscal year, Making
Changes, like the women we support, has
been in transition. We had long outgrown our small
storefront space on 7th Ave SW. Thanks to Albi
Homes and their dedicated team of staff and trade
partners, we were able to move into our new home at the end of March
2011. Our new space is warm, welcoming and mirrors our sense of hope
for the women we support.
Safely and happily ensconced in our new location, we are now able to
focus on deepening the impact of our existing services. We remain clear
in our belief that creating a solid network of partnerships and fostering
an internal climate of contribution where women across the organization
receive and give support to each other is the key to creating the most
lasting impact for all of our participants. We are Home!

Message from
the Board Chair
M
aking Changes has many reasons for
celebration this year, we have been able
to empower over 1200 women, we found a
new home, we expanded our fantastic staff,
found superb volunteers and participated in
many exciting events. But most importantly,
we celebrate the power of people coming
together to create a better future for women
in our community.
At Making Changes we see everyday the
difference each one of us can make in the
community and the magic that happens
when all of our contributions together are
changing peoples’ lives. This year especially,
we want to thank Albi Homes and their trade
partners for making our new location into
our “home”.
Despite the challenging environment,
Making Changes has flourished the past
year by focusing on new opportunities and
building new relationships. We welcomed
new volunteers to contribute their talents
to our programs and on our board. We
developed new relationships with partners
and funders of our programs and we also

benefited from many fundraisers that the
community organized for us. All of this was
made possible through our staff, Lili, Elaine,
Lillian and Roxanne and Roxie who went
above and beyond, THANK YOU!
Our strategic direction for the coming years
2011-2013 will focus on deepening our
impact in the community, building a strong
infrastructure to support our volunteers and
staff and continue to build partnerships with
both private and public sector.
We hope that all of you will continue to work
with Making Changes in the coming years
as there is much more that we can build
together.

Out of the closet
and into the street
Hi,
I had an appointment with the
Walk In Closet yesterday and had a
wonderful time! I wanted to thank you
all for being so friendly and warm! While
I was looking forward to getting some
new clothes, I wasn’t feeling comfortable
about my current financial status.
However, after the first couple of
minutes, I realized all of the volunteers
were just there to help me find clothes not to judge or condemn.
I especially want to thank Paula, the
volunteer who was assigned to me!
I probably wasn’t an easy customer,
but she was great, and I ended up
with some beautiful things that I
feel confident wearing.
Thank you all!

“I look forward to interacting
with this community of women - regardless
of whether you’re a participant or volunteer,
you can tell the bonds that have been
created are really strong.”
“I feel a sense of belonging here...
we’re all a team that’s passionate
about the same thing.”
Amy Lui - Merchandise Consultant
Michelle Berg - Resource Development Manager
A
my relocated to Calgary from New York amidst an extensive fashion career working with labels such
as Ralph Lauren, Polo Jeans and celebrity brand JLO by
Jennifer Lopez.
Now, she calls volunteering with Making Changes one
of her proudest moment and best decisions she's made.
"Getting involved allows me to give back and make a
difference. I've met the most incredible people
along the way."
Among her many responsibilities, Amy focuses on
connecting the Walk-In-Closet with retailers and
other community partners, helping bring in quality
donations. Additionally, she helps organize fundraising
events for the WIC, attending every 2011 event so far.
“The best thing about Making Changes is that
everything is transparent. Lili shares almost everything
with the volunteers... you feel very comfortable and
welcome, and it motivates you even more because
you are directly involved.”
I
t was a re-evaluation of priorities that sent Michelle the way of
Making Changes. Despite an almost inconceivably successful
career as a young corporate VP, Michelle knew there was more that
she had to offer her community.
Being a woman in transition herself, she seized the opportunity to
make a difference through Making Changes, and immediately set
about creating a substantial social media presence, developing a
resource plan, establishing an opportunity for a major annual event
through the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon, and creating dozens of
connections and partnerships with corporate Calgary.
All this, while building an enormously successful HR business that
has seen international growth within its first year. Why?
“Lili is one of the most extraordinary Executive Directors I have met.
With the passion she exudes you cannot help but get excited and
want to help out.”

H
ow do you adequately
thank someone for changing the course of an association,
who moves us to the next level
in our development and who
has, simply by taking on our relocation, changed the lives of so
many women? In late 2010, Albi
Homes graciously agreed
to sponsor the
renovation of
a 3300 square
foot warehouse
and invited 19
of their trade
partners to assist in its transformation. The
team worked
in tandem to
create a place
that is warm, welcoming and
brings a sense of belonging
to the women we support. At
Making Changes, we focus on
the assets that each participant
brings to us and the potential
for her strong and bright future.
Albi Homes and their partners
created a space
that mirrors
that hope and
that confidence. We are
deeply grateful for their
generosity
and the hope
and promise
they have instilled in every
corner of our
new home.

Employment and Life Skills Program is
Jaime Enachescu, Amal Umar, Barbara
Smith, Julia Melnyk and Elaine Lupul are
some of the helping hands associated with
Making Changes.
T
hirty years ago, Amal Umar decided
there was a need to support new
immigrant women in the Calgary
community with a program that helped
them to create successful futures in their
new communities. Amal introduced the
Making Changes program to the Calgary
community in 1981, and continued to
facilitate our sessions for many years. Five,
ten, twenty and thirty years later, former
participants still tell Amal that the Making
Changes program changed their lives.
Barb Smith, also a long time facilitator and
supporter of the program, echoes these
sentiments as she has
seen hundreds of women and their
families impacted by the program’s
transformative process.

...and it looks good on you!
Through a long time partnership with the
Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association,
Silvia Vidal and Elaine Lupul have continued
the process of helping immigrant women
to believe in themselves and to believe
in their potential.
As we celebrate thirty years we see many
opportunities to deepen our impact in the
community as we embrace our future!
