DEAR FRIENDS OF JOSEPHINUM ACADEMY,
W
e proudly present this report of the stewardship of Josephinum’s mission and resources.
The Josephinum community is united by its passionate commitment to extend the
opportunity for a transformative education that prepares young women for success at
college and in life. We model for our students the desire to achieve this level of education
by committing ourselves to the continual improvement of all aspects of our organization.
In 2012-2013, Josephinum Academy:
• Celebrated the success of the Class of 2013 with 100% of the graduates gaining
acceptance into college and being awarded a record-breaking total of $1.9 million in
merit-based college scholarships.
• Saw a 20% increase in enrollment, giving us the precious opportunity to serve even
more inspiring young women.
• Implemented Prepworks, a comprehensive program for ACT test preparation that allows
Freshman through Seniors to receive dedicated time for test preparation and gives
teachers the opportunity to utilize student data for improving instruction.
• Continued to build relationships with the Sacred Heart community by participating
in an international exchange program with the Sacred Heart school in Taiwan and by
hosting our first Sacred Heart Summer Service Project, “Food Deserts in the Land of
Plenty.”
• Enriched student life through increasing opportunities for participation in athletics,
visual and performing arts, extracurricular activities, and national competitions like the
Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship.
• Made significant gains in our technology program through the integration of iPad
technology in our classroom curriculum.
Your support makes it possible for Josephinum to offer its life-changing program to deserving
young women of Chicago, regardless of their financial limitations. We cannot imagine how
many young women would have missed this priceless opportunity if it were not for your
continued generosity. We thank you for your commitment to Josephinum’s students and to
the mission we hold together in sacred trust.
Gratefully,

2012-2013:
Our Year in Bloom
Enrollment
Class of 2013
Josephinum Academy was proud
to continue its pattern of growing
enrollment in the 2012-2013 school
year; our student population increased
by 20%. Our freshman class included
students from over 35 different zip
codes, from a multitude of elementary
schools. Beyond the exceptional number
of students that we welcomed, we have
been impressed with their high academic
profile and look forward to seeing their
successes in our community and beyond!
Prepworks
The 2012-2013 school year marked the
introduction of Prepworks, an effective
online ACT test prep program. Thanks to
the support of the Johnson Foundation,
Josephinum has fully implemented
Prepworks for all students in grades
nine through twelve. Our students
have already demonstrated significant
improvement, and we are pleased to
report an average increase of one and
a half points on ACT test scores among
Josephium’s Senior class.
Technology Program
Technology plays an important role at
Josephinum Academy both inside and
outside of the classroom. All students are
issued Apple iPads, which help teachers
create a truly dynamic classroom
environment. This also allows students
to track their grades online, study, and
submit assignments from home. Parents
also have the ability to follow student
progress online.
GRADUATION
In an emotional and joyous commencement ceremony held on Saturday, June 1 at St.
Aloysius Catholic Church, 29 outstanding young women graduated from Josephinum
Academy. Cynthia D’Amico, the teacher chosen by the graduating class to speak at the
ceremony, gave a heartfelt address that encouraged students to stay true to themselves as
they begin the next chapter of their lives.
As Valedictorian, Liliya Polyek spoke to
the graduates, congratulating her fellow
classmates and reminding them how far
they have come over the past four years.
COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE AND
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
The 29 graduates of Josephinum
Academy’s Class of 2013 were offered a
combined total of $1.9 million in meritbased scholarship awards over four years
of college. The class celebrated 100%
college acceptance, and the students
went on to attend a variety of prominent
colleges and universities such as:
- Columbia College Chicago
- DePauw University
- Dominican University
- Illinois State University
- Kenyon College
- Loyola University Chicago
- North Park University
- Northeastern Illinois University
- Saint Mary’s College (Notre Dame)
- Western Illinois University
Sacred Heart Relationships
SACRED HEART CULTURAL
EXCHANGE PROGRAM
In February Josephinum welcomed
Alice, an exchange student from our
sister Sacred Heart School in Taiwan.
Alice was hosted by Josephinum
Senior Jasmine Manuel, who had the
opportunity to travel to Taiwan last
summer as part of a Sacred Heart
Network exchange program. Alice told
us her favorite memories of Chicago
were visiting the dinosaurs at the
Field Museum and seeing snow for
the first time. Her favorite classes
at Josephinum included Watercolor
Painting, World Religions, and Physical Education classes where she loved playing
baseball and hockey. On Alice’s last day at Josephinum, her classmates took her out to
the field to play in the snow one last time before her flight back home to Taiwan.
Student Life
ACTIVITIES & COMPETITIONS
In 2012-2013, students enjoyed a wide
range of activities. They participated in
community service days, attended allschool masses, acted in professional plays,
traveled to class retreats, and so much
more! Students also had opportunities
to participate in competitions like the
Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship
(NFTE)
Citywide
Business
Plan
Competition, in which Josephinum
Sophomore Wendy Rociles earned 5th
place out of 1,600 students with her plan
for the business she created and is now
running, Beauty in the Mirror.
ATHLETICS
JOSEPHINUM SUMMER SERVICE PROJECT
Our lady Cougars compete in Volleyball,
Basketball, Softball, and Soccer. This year,
Josephinum’s athletic teams reached
new levels of success, with the addition
of JV teams for each sport and a new
bus to transport athletes to away games.
Josephinum’s soccer team finished
among the top 64 teams in Illinois!
FINE & PERFORMING ARTS
Josephinum Academy hosted its first Sacred Heart Network Summer Service Project,
“Food Deserts in the Land of Plenty,” on June 24-29. Students and chaperones from
Sacred Heart schools across the country participated in the project, which aimed to
educate students on the topic of food deserts, a term used to describe geographical
areas where there is little or no access to fresh and healthy food. During this week-long
project, students explored the reality of food issues by attempting to shop for groceries
in food deserts and also by volunteering at the Greater Chicago Food Depository and a
local food pantry to evaluate the quality of food provided by those services. With help
from top experts in the field, the group analyzed the negative health effects of living
in a food desert and performed a daily system analysis to learn why unhealthy food
is so cheap and accessible. Lastly, the students spent time on Fresh Moves, a Chicago
transit bus converted to a traveling fresh food market, and visited other Chicago agencies
engaging in creative solutions to the food desert issue. The girls slept at Josephinum and
even cooked meals with produce that came straight from our garden!
JOSEPHINUM STUDENT PARTICIPATION
IN SUMMER SERVICE PROJECTS
This summer, Josephinum students Emily Hutton
(Senior), Destiny Cartagena (Senior), and Wendy
Rociles (Junior) learned how to milk cows on
their Summer Service Trip to Sprout Creek Farm
in Poughkeepsie, NY. This experience gave the
students a unique opportunity to learn about
the origins of our food.
Josephinum Academy supports arts
education because we beleive that
it reinforces all of the skills and
characteristics we desire for our students.
With increased participation in the arts
during the 2012-2103 school year, we
saw our students learn to be even more
imaginative and inquisitive. Through
education in theatre, music, movement,
and visual arts, our arts program provided
them with the chance to be heard and a
platform from which to share their voices.
“Preach by example
of your lives rather
than by words.
Example is the very
best sermon.”

In Memoriam
†
Josephinum mourns the loss of
Board Member John Ahearne
who passed on August 5. John is
survived by wife Betsy Ahearne
and two teenage daughters; Marion,
currently a Freshman at Villanova,
and Caroline, a Sophomore at Loyola
Academy. John spent his entire
career employed in the financial
industry, with an emphasis on fixed
income securities. For the last eight
years, he was a Director of Fixed
Income Securities at Robert W. Baird
& Co.
“With John’s leadership as the Chair
of our Strategy Committee, you
had the sense that all great things are possible. His sudden death
leaves us mourning the loss of a dear friend and colleague,” said
Josephinum President Michael Dougherty. “Josephinum’s mission
and students are stronger because of his service.”
John held civic responsibility and education as core values in his
life. In addition to being a Board Member at Josephinum Academy,
he served on the boards at Sacred Heart Schools (Sheridan Road),
University Club of Chicago , and the Saddle and Cycle Club.
Special Thanks
We wish to extend our gratitude to the Sisters of Christian Charity for
the use of the school building and land, valued at $325,185 per year.
Beginning in the 2009 Fiscal Year, Josephinum changed its accounting
method to reflect the non-cash expense of the use of its facilities,
which are donated to Josephinum by the Sisters of Christian Charity.
