USE OF TOBACCO ON SCHOOL PREMISES
The Board of Education believes that the right of persons to use tobacco must be balanced against the right of those who do not use tobacco to breathe air untainted by tobacco.
In order to protect students and employees who choose not to use tobacco from an environment noxious to them and potentially damaging to their health, the Board prohibits the
use of tobacco on premises (high school, middle school, elementary buildings, bus garage,
maintenance building, athletic complexes, Board of Education Center, home tech projects,
parking lots) or in district vehicles. Regardless of time of day or time of the school year,
24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
For the purpose of the policy, “use of tobacco” means a cigar, cigarette, smokeless
tobacco, or pipe, or any other matter or substance that contains tobacco. ■
DANGEROUS WEAPONS ACT
Since 1995, state and federal law requires school to expel students who possess dangerous weapons, or commit arson or rape in a school
building or on school property.
In compliance with state law, the Board shall permanently expel any student who possesses a dangerous weapon in a weapon-free school
zone or commits either arson or rape in a district building or on school property, including school busses and other school transportation.
For purposes of this policy a dangerous weapon capable of inflicting bodily harm is defined as a “firearm, gun of any type, including air
and gas-powered guns (whether loaded or unloaded), knives, razors, clubs, electric weapons, metallic knuckles, martial arts weapons, ammunition, and explosives. This policy shall also encompass such actions as look-alike items, false fire alarms, bomb threats, or intentional
calls to falsely report a dangerous condition. ■
