Colmar
t is impossible to resist the charms of Colmar, with its half-timbered houses, canals,
flowers… and those who do are missing out on a delightful town. Encapsulating the
idyll of Alsace, it protects a way of life that is just waiting to be discovered. The capital of
Alsatian wines, it combines the intimacy of a medium-sized town with a remarkably rich heritage.
The must-see attraction is of course “Little Venice”. If your thirst for culture is not quenched by
a visit to Unterlinden Museum, then the Bartholdi Museum which tells the story of the creator of
the Statue of Liberty born in Colmar, will be a perfect end to thee day.

Mulhouse
ulhouse has skilfully and intelligently transformed its industrial past into a wonderful
source of knowledge and wonder: its technical museums are renowned far and wide and
the National Automobile Museum is one of the most fascinating in the world.

paradise!
lthough small, Alsace as a region has very diverse countryside:
the plain bordered in the East by the mythical and majestic
Rhine, the Piedmont covered with vineyards full of famous
grape types and the rounded summits of the Vosges which peak
at 1,424m, with their valleys guarded by mediaeval fortresses…
In summer, cool down in swimming pools and water parks, while in
winter, the peaks are ideal for practicing Nordic or Alpine skiing on
the runs at 11 different ski areas. Mountain-lovers will find plenty to
do in Alsace, whether trekking in snowshoes or on foot in the Champ
du Feu, exploring the Alpine slopes of the Massif du Honneck or even
admiring the magnificent Lac Blanc. With more than 12,000 km of
hiking trails and 2,500 km of cycle routes and marked mountain bike
trails, Alsace is the perfect destination whether you are looking for
sport or a well earned rest.

The most experienced will take the
TMV® - Traversée du Massif des
Vosges (Crossing the Vosges on
mountain bike). From Wissembourg
to Thann, this marked and permanent 420 km trail of which 9,000 m is
uneven, in 14 stages or 20 sections,
links Northern Alsace to the South.

dishes, Alsace will delight even the most demanding food
connoisseurs. The local cuisine is remarkable for its expertise
and its taste as much for the savoury dishes as for the sweet ones.
A thousand flavours assault the senses during a hearty meal enjoyed
in a welcoming Michelin star restaurant, bierstub or winstub. These
meeting places reflect the favourite pastime in Alsace: sharing good
things, in keeping with the welcoming nature that comes naturally
to the French! A multitude of establishments will welcome you to
taste the symbolic dishes of Alsace cuisine: choucroute (sauerkraut),
Bäckeoffe (vegetable and meat stew), matelote du ried (Ried fish stew),
Flammekueche (tarte flambée), and all sorts of small dishes typically
served particularly in winstubs, the predecessors of wine bars. Do not
forget to taste Alsace wines, classified under AOC official designation,
while visiting the numerous wine cellars. Brandies, liqueurs and beers
are some of the other local specialities, which make up more than half
of the national production.

HOUSE
There is a large variety of halftimbered houses in Alsace,
depending on the area (plain or
mountain) and the use of the building (animal breeding, agriculture or
viniculture).
The shapes of the interlacing
beams had symbolic value: the
diamond represented fertility, the
cross of St André protection and
multiplication (diamond and cross
sometimes cross over), and slanting posts reflected the silhouette
of man. Inscriptions of sun cycles,
tulips and 5 or 6 pointed stars were
believed to protect the house from
lightening, fire, witches and other
evils. Half-timbering and façades
were enhanced with sculptures
and embellished with painted patterns. The steeply sloping roof (to
prevent snow from collecting) was
made of “Biberschwanz”, tiles in
the shape of a beaver’s tail. Inside,
only the main room, la Stube, was
heated, along with the kitchen.
Some experts claim that, rather
than being purely symbolic, each
part of the half-timbering played
a very specific and important role
when it came to shoring up the
structure.

CARNIVAL
TRADITIONAL ALSATIAN COSTUMES
Despite the traditional image, in reality traditional Alsatian costume
covers a great variety of styles (white headdresses in the shape of a sun in
Meistratzheim, skull caps with a small bow pinned on the front in Hunspach,
etc.)! In general, the variety of costume depends on the town or village, the
status of the woman, their religion and wealth, all of which prescribe the
shapes and colours.
Some villages still hold traditional
carnivals. Offwiller and Dieffenthal
continue the tradition of throwing
burning wooden discs
(Schieweschlawe), very old rites.

Christmas Fairyland
EASTER
In Alsace, Christmas is actively prepared for and is based on several customs!
Spread around the world, they are still practised today. The Christmas
markets are distant cousins of the old fairs of Saint Martin and Saint Nicolas.
The Christmas tree is an authentic Alsatian tradition. Its first written reference dates back to 1521 and the document can be found in the Humanist
library in Sélestat. Every Sunday a new candle is lit on the Advent crown,
announcing the coming of the light. From the beginning of Advent, the famous
Wihnachtsbredle are baked, small Christmas cakes with sweet scents and
very old traditional shapes. There are plenty of traditions to discover, such
as that of Hans Trapp, the Alsatian Père Fouettard (The whipping father, who
punishes bad children), or the Christkindel, a Christmas fairy who gave his
name to the Christkindelsmärik, the Strasbourg Christmas market.
But in December, Alsace sets the scene for concerts, exhibitions and other
wonderful events which revive the original meaning of Christmas: the “Noëlies”.

At Easter, traditions first reflect
the act of purification; houses are
cleaned (Oschterputz), old wood is
burnt, sins are confessed!
The Easter lamb biscuit is to represent the Resurrection. The Easter
bunny and its eggs symbolise
Spring and fertility.
The Messtis or Kilbe, annual
patronal festivals (town or village
festivals in honour of a saint) and
fairs, are at their height in Summer.

AUTUMN AND WINTER
After the harvest, the grape harvest and various harvest festivals
are celebrated. In years gone by,
the beginning of Winter saw the
beginning of “veillées”. Several
families would meet in the Stub,
the only heated room, around the
earthenware stove (Kachelofe).

the days of chivalrous knights whilst visiting the multiple fortified
castles and hearing the legends of the men who built them. The
countless churches, chapels and historic buildings, all richly ornate,
reflect the development of both Romanesque art and Alsatian Gothicism.
Let yourself be carried away with emotion and admiration at the memorial
sites, museums and other spots of outstanding beauty. The historic centre
of Strasbourg, capital of Europe with 2,000 years worth of history, is a
UNESCO World Heritage site. On 7 July 2008, it was joined by NeufBrisach, with its star fortifications designed by Vauban. Such monuments,
along with many others, bear witness to Alsace’s turbulent past.

Named “Vieil Armand” by the
poilus (French WW1 veterans), the
Hartmannswillerkopf mountain was
the site of very bloody battles in
1915. The site comprises a national
cemetery with 1,256 graves, a boneyard and a 80 m trench providing
access to the crypt which is home
to 12,000 unknown soldiers.

about Alsace
he region covers a surface area of 8,280 km2 for a population of
1,817,000. If Alsace is famous for its bad weather, it is mainly
because of the harsh winters. However the Alsatian climate is
semi-continental and the abundance of vineyards is evidence

The Outre-Forêt begins where the forest of
Haguenau ends. Bordered to the East by the
Rhine and merging with the Northern Vosges
Regional Nature Park to the West, it is a landscape of hills, dales and forests whose major
tourist attractions are the picturesque villages
of potters, thermal towns, fortified castles, the
Maginot Line, etc.
The Wine Route is a changeable ribbon which
runs along the Eastern side of the Vosges and
winds undisturbed across the slopes of the
mountains, taking you on a journey through the
51 “Alsace Grand cru” A.O.C. locations.
From the gates of Marlenheim to those of
Thann, take the time to discover the spirit of the
Route, meet winegrowers, taste their wines,
lose yourself in the streets of Mediaeval towns
then, far from the crowds, follow vineyard paths
and admire the panorama across the majestic
vineyards; a panorama which is yours to enjoy
for as long as you want.

Along the routes of Kochersberg, Hanau, the
Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park and
Alsace Bossue, there is a succession of typical
majestic farms, dwellings and solid sandstone
churches, the huge forest of the Vosges, in other
words a typical Lorraine landscape and architecture. Moreover, there are also numerous sites of
Jewish heritage and Alsatian brewing heritage
dotted along the route.
CENTRAL VOSGES ROUTE
+ - 260 km
The mythical Rhine attracts a number of admirers
who come to contemplate it. It reaches Alsace
slightly downstream of Basel and leaves it
at Lauterbourg. In the 18th and 19th centuries
boatmen travelled up the Rhine to the North Sea
to sell wine to the English, the Danish and the
Swedish. In the past, the Rhine broke its banks
and flooded the plain; at the end of the 19th
century a lot of work was carried out to regulate
the path of the river.
The route was created during the First World
War, with the strategic aim of ensuring logistics
and defence on the Vosges’ front. From the
Bonhomme pass to the Vieil Armand, via the
Schlucht pass, the Hohneck, the Markstein and
le Grand Ballon, the Vosges peaks route is more
than 80 kilometres long.
The Joffre route links Thann to Masevaux.
The Central Vosges culminate at an altitude of
between 900 and 1,100 metres. The excellent
road network provides visitors with easy access,
via the numerous passes, to high mountain
pastures and forest-covered summits or beautiful valleys. Apart from the numerous traditional
visits, this region, an area of wide open spaces,
has plenty of sporting activities on offer: walks
and hikes, mountain bike circuits, Alpine and
Nordic skiing, etc.
This route comprises fifteen villages, a positive
journey into the heart of the land, culture and
gastronomy, from the Vosges to the Black
Forest, via the Alsatian plain. The route leaves
Contexeville, and weaves its way through Épinal,
Gérardmer, Munster, Colmar, Neuf-Brisach,
finishing in Germany, in Titisee-Neustadt.

THE FRIED CARP TRAILS
The fried carp trails were created in 1975 to promote this local speciality. It is an original way of
discovering the Sundgau: its dales, its orchards,
its lakes, its carp-ponds and particularly its
villages in bloom abundant with half-timbered
houses.
