Principal’s news
Camberwell South Primary School welcome new staff for 2015:
Jonathan Watkins - PE
Jono Watkins has joined the team at Camberwell South Primary in 2015 as the Physical
Education teacher.
He is very really excited to meet everyone at the school and especially the children. Jono has
been teaching in New Zealand and the United Kingdom and looks forward to new and exciting
challenges in Melbourne.
Jono loves teaching so he can be part of many special journeys and help children reach their
potential. He recently became a father of a beautiful baby girl and who has already become
his world. He is a sports fanatic and follows many teams passionately. His favourite sports
include Cricket, Soccer, Rugby and Golf.
Meg Alexander – JL6
Meg loves being a teacher and learning alongside the students - learning something new
everyday.
She has a passion for literacy, making sense of numeracy and finding the best strategies to
solve problems effectively and inquiring into investigations that make real life connections
with our world today.
Meg grew up in a property outside of Shepparton. She loves reading and cooking for her
family and friends. She also loves taking photos and travelling and meeting new people.
Meg is looking forward to meeting you all as she becomes a part of our learning community.
Dylan Benwell – SL3
Dylan is excited to be a part of the staff and school community of Camberwell South Primary
School. He is looking forward to getting to know the students and parents.
He loves being a teacher - building positive relationships with students and helping them
achieve their goals, whilst having some fun along the way.
Outside of school his time is spent with family, friends and playing sport. During the summer
he plays lawn bowls for Clayton and has represented Victoria during the winter months. He is
also a VFL Goal Umpire (and a Collingwood supporter).
Abby Dowd – ML2
Abby moved from Leongatha to Melbourne this year. She loves being a teacher for many
reasons. Firstly, how rewarding it is when a student has that 'light bulb' moment where they
just get it! Another is because of the wonderful students, teachers and parents she gets to
work and learn with together. She enjoys the beach, reading and spending time with her
friends and family. Abby barracks for the Bombers in AFL and really enjoys playing sport,
especially netball.

2
Kirstyn Sinclair – JL2
Kirstyn was born in Wollongong, New South Wales and is very excited to start teaching at
Camberwell South Primary School.
The reason she loves being a teacher is because she gets to spend every day with the
students. She likes to make teaching fun, rewarding and most of all, interesting! Kirstyn
believes that the most rewarding gift that comes from being a teacher is seeing how the
students develop and change every day.
Outside of school, Kirstyn loves cooking and trying out new dessert recipes. She enjoys
travelling and her favourite country visited is Cambodia.
Jenna Dowsey – JL1
Jenna was on leave and has returned to the Junior team this year. She is really excited to
be teaching at Camberwell South Primary in 2015 along with Mrs Kotros. Jenna will be
teaching JL1 on Thursday and Friday.
Jenna has been at home since the end of Term 1 2014 enjoying some very special time with
her beautiful baby girl Sophie.
Jenna loves teaching because she gets to be part of so many special journeys and loves
helping children reach their potential and develop as learners and individuals. Outside of
school, she loves spending time with her family - two cheeky girls Millie (2½ years) and
Sophie (6 months) keep her busy, entertained and smiling!
Caroline Ross – PL4
Caroline is returning to CSPS after leave and has many exciting things planned for the
preps throughout the year.
Caroline likes being a teacher as every day brings something different. She loves being
able to laugh and build relationships with the children and have fun with them while they
progress in their learning.
She likes spending time with her nephew, going to the gym and travelling.
Nicole Quah – ML5
Nicole first stated working at CSPS in 2010 and has returned from leave. She will be
teaching ML5 along with Mrs Langdon.
Nicole loves being a teacher and has been lucky enough to teach in lots of different
schools in Melbourne and London. She has always enjoyed learning and has fond
memories from her own time at school, which is why she enjoys teaching so much.
Last year she became mum to Henry and has loved getting to know him and all his
mischievous ways. Apart from spending time with her family, she also enjoys playing
netball and going to the footy.

Safe and Friendly Playgrounds at Camberwell South
Hello everyone.
It really is exciting to start a new school year. The school learning program begins again and students establish new
routines with new peers and generally a new teacher.
For all students, play times are highly anticipated. Our students are really fortunate to have a safe and varied
playground that provides opportunities to run, climb, play in the sandpit and generally ‘socialise’.
Throughout the last week it has been a joy to be in the playground at breaks and to be surrounded by the excitement
of our preps as they explore the equipment and the sand, getting a sense of a whole new outdoors environment. The
homeroom is open for our littlest students as they begin to understand the way to become a part
of such an active and noisy environment.
The staff is aware of the many requirements that students have at playtime and actively promote
safe and responsible behaviour at play breaks in classrooms.
In the playground, teachers on duty wear fluorescent vests and carry orange bags – we are very
visible!
We want to help and encourage all students who have playground concerns to find the duty
teacher. Teachers are adept at solving problems both big and small and we want to know of
concerns as they arise. It is a message that we encourage and continue to promote.
A key component of my role is Student Health and Wellbeing. This term I will write about school
practices including social circles, the PATHs program and student leadership that support the
wellbeing of our students.
I look forward to speaking with many of you around the school over the next few weeks as we
begin a new and exciting school year.

WARNING: HEADLICE SEASON
Headlice love school all year, but are particularly fond of warm weather. I urge all parents to thoroughly check your
childrens’ hair shafts, where the lice and eggs(nits) stick on, and treat accordingly. If an oval shaped whitish fleck
cannot be easily released from the hair shaft near the scalp, it is likely to be an egg. Remember to always retreat the
hair 6-7 days after initial treatment. One treatment is never enough. Eggs are easier to remove when the hair is
covered with hair conditioner.
A small spray bottle of water, containing a few drops of tea tree oil, sprayed on the hair before school each day is
effective in preventing spread of lice.
Please contact me should you have queries, or need advice.
ATTENTION PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH ANAPHYLAXIS, ASTHMA AND ALLERGY
If you have not already done so, PLEASE complete a new Care Plan for 2015, with an updated photo attached.
Medication cannot be administered at school without a completed Plan, signed by parents and/or Doctors.

Maths Tips For Parents (Part 1)
Supporting maths learning and encouraging your child to love math
It is important to help children recognise that everyone uses maths all of the time. Here are tips to help your child to
have a positive attitude about mathematics.






Make learning math a positive experience. Don’t talk negatively about math as it can lead to ‘maths anxiety’
(a proven cause of low achievement)
Schedule maths homework at the same time in a quiet location everyday. Be available during this time to talk
to your child. Create a math homework toolkit with pencils, erasers, ruler, protractor, counters and calculator
When helping with homework, follow the method being taught. Don’t teach short cuts that could confuse your
child. Do not say, ”Let me show you my way- it’s simpler and faster.”
Be relaxed and positive. You are not expected to be an expert. You are there to encourage learning.
If your child becomes frustrated, stop. Remind your child of the things they have already learned how do to
successfully, such as riding a bicycle, writing a paragraph or speaking a second language.
Ask your child’s teacher for strategies to use at home that reflect your child’s learning style. If your child asks
for help and you don’t know the answer, be honest and say, “I don’t know, but lets figure it out together.” If
you continue to be unsuccessful, you can also ask your child’s teacher for help. This gives your child
permission to ask for help as well.

Centre, Faculty of Education, Queen’s University.

Preps Working Bee – Postponed to Sunday 15 February, 9am – 12:30
Hello parents of Preppies! Welcome to CSPS. Sunday 15/2 is the date for
the first Preps working bee in 2015 and we love to have you join us to make
sure our school is safe and well maintained. (Of course, parents from all school levels are very welcome to volunteer
at any working bee too!). Our working bees are a great way to get to know other families at the school and learn about
CSPS. The kids love to come along and help (or maybe it’s just the donuts we serve at morning tea??)
If you have a high-powered whipper snipper, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers or other tools, please bring them with you.
We meet at 9am in the staff room (rear of the Admin Building opposite the Uniform Shop) with a briefing and finish
around midday. Morning tea provided. Please wear hats, boots, gloves, goggles and other safety gear.


RSVP - if you can help out this weekend, then please email Matt Schmerl ([email protected]) or Andrew
Swain ([email protected]).
Please phone Helen Canny, Convenor of Buildings and Grounds Sub-Committee if you have any questions about
the working bees or BAGS on 0419 352 659.
The more the merrier! Bringing the kids along (especially if they help) helps them learn about and feel responsible for
their school environment, which develops a sense of community, pride and contribution. We are looking forward to
meeting lots of Prep families!
