Gasoline Analyzed By Saint Barth Environment and
Sustainable Development:
LESS THAN 1% OF BENZENE
PER LITER
T
o bring an objective opinion
into the passionate debate
about the price of gasoline
on the island, the non-profit association Saint Barth Environment
And Sustainable Development,
which has always defended the
position of using fuel with a level
of benzene of less than 1%, recently analyzed the fuel sold in Saint
Barth. Two samples of lead-free
gasoline were tested: one in
December and one in January.
Both samples were sent to a laboratory in France for analysis.
The results were made known in
the past few days: “the level of
benzene was comparable in both
samples and slightly higher than
0.6%. These results are also comparable to those measured during
fuel tests in France, where the
average is between 0.5% and
0.6%,” reassures the association in
a press release dated February 16.
They are “reassured” in that the
fuel sold in Saint Barth definitely
has a level of benzene less than
1% as called for by the law. They
add that “taking into account possible health risks—benzene is very
carcinogenic—the top limit of 1%
should not be put into question,
especially if it is just to save a few
pennies at the pump.”

As a reminder, since directive N°
98/70/CE of the European Parliament and council went into effect
on January 1, 2000, the fuel distributed in France—and in
Europe—should not contain more
than 1% of benzene, a substance
known to be carcinogenic to such
a point that high levels of inhalation can cause death. It wasn’t
until 2004 that the law was
applied in Saint Barth, yet Saint
Martin still sells fuel that is does
not meet the standards of the law.

In fact, in Canada, the 1% rule
for benzene has been in effect
since July 1, 1999 in keeping
with their concern for public
health. In the United States, in
contrast to what is frequently
invoked by certain elected officials, starting with the president,
the level of benzene never
exceeds 2% and is usually closer
to an average of 1%. A directive
of the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) in the US calls for
the reduction of this level to a
ceiling of 0.62% by 2011. In
reality, only third world countries
actually still use fuel with a higher level of benzene.
New License Plates
For Vehicles
A
s of March 3, 2008 all new vehicles
registered on the island will have a
newly designed license plate, which
marks the passage of Saint Barth to a
French Overseas Collectivity. The license
plates will be specific to island with SBH—
the initials for Saint Barthh—on the left
side of the plate, plus up to three numbers
and one to three letters. At a meeting on
February 12, the territorial council discussed the possibility of also allowing personalized plates with a combination of letters and numbers.
The new license plates concern only those
vehicles to be registered in the future: existing ones will not be replaced. However, the
new system is for all vehicles, not just cars
but also two-wheelers, which until now
where not registered, as well as construction
vehicles. Additional information is available

Jenny Stening To Launch Book About
Swedish Buildings In Saint Barth
S
wedish architect Jenny Stening will be at
the Swedish Design
Center of Saint Barthélemy on Saturday, February
23 for a pre-publication
launch of her new book
about the Swedish buildings of Gustavia. “The fact
that it is one of the few
colonial towns built by
Swedes has made it interesting for me as a Swedish
architect,” says Stening,
who first visited Saint
Barth in 1994 when she
sailed to the island as a
teenager. She continued to
visit over the years and has
now written a book based
on a walking tour of the
significant Swedish buildings and monuments in
Gustavia, a project she
completed in 2004.
The book serves as an
extended guide to her
architectural and historic
tour of colonial Gustavia
with a focus on the period
of 1785-1878 when the
island was under Swedish
rule. It was during this
period that the town of
Gustavia was founded.

Sun Vélo,
Another Way To See The Island
L
ong considered transportation for those without cars,
the bicycle has made a
comeback as a popular means of
locomotion, with many people
back in saddle for ecological reasons. In Saint Barth, the topography of the island doesn’t lend itself
to bicycle travel very well, but a
bicycle could become an interesting new way to discover Gustavia,
or other parts of the island for
those who are courageous enough.
In any case, that is the hope of
Alexandra and Markku Härmälä,
who opened a new company called
Sun Velo a few weeks ago, in collaboration with tour guide Helene
Bernier of Easy Time. They offer a
bicycle rental service, from hourly
to monthly. At the moment their
fleet is comprised of a dozen Trek
bicycles, lightweight hybrids that
can do off-road riding as well as
adapt to urban travel. Alexandra,

who has an ecological
outlook, came up
with the idea a while
back, “but it took
time to take shape,”
she says. A Saint
Barth native, Alexandra hopes that people
will take the time to
discover the island in
a new way, by riding
off the beaten path.
But that’s not all: she
also hopes to influence the mentality of the residents and show them
that a bicycle can contribute to the
global ecological balance, as well
as the local ecology, “vital for
everyone.”
To help their clients, Alexandra
and Markku have designed itineraries at all levels—from easy to
difficult. “It’s also a good way to
exercise,” says Alexandra, who
adds that a bicycle is a great way to
get around Gustavia. Sun Vélo also
has bicycles for sale.

MARINE PARK:
END OF YEAR REPORT
◗ Marine turtles: The holiday period closed
without drama for the numerous marine turtles that frequent the entry channel to the
port, in spite of the numerous boats that move
in and out, sometimes at excessive speed.
And it was necessary to remind people on a
daily basis that the speed limit in the port
zone is three knots. The entry channel has a
lot of marine plant life, making it Pan ideal
spot to find food for the primarily female
green sea turtles. They swim underwater but
must surface regularly to breathe and can be
run over by boats that are going too fast, not
giving them enough time to dive back into
the water. By going slower, one can respect
the turtle population and even take time to
admire them.
◗ Fourchue and Colombier: The bays of
Fourchue and Colombier were under assault
during the end of year holidays. The marine
park was also busy here reminding people
that the speed limit was still just three knots
throughout the entire port area, for the security of swimmers as well as the turtles found in
the sea grasses and marine plants in these two
bays. These underwater prairies serve as
nurseries for fish from the nearby reef, for
food for the turtles, and housing for numerous species such as starfish and sea horses. It
is forbidden to anchor in these areas as not to
pull up the plants.
◗ Where to anchor: the best moorings? It is
best to use the buoys provided by the marine
park or anchor outside of the protected zones,
and in sand if possible. You want to “insure”
your mooring? Avoid tying up to a buoy and
dropping your anchor. It is better to attach
directly to the mooring as well as the buoy.

La Chorale de Bons Chœurs In
Two Concerts To Raise Money
For A Trip To New York

o help raise money
for their trip to
New York, planned
for April 29-May 6, the
Chorale de Bons Chœurs
will perform Friday and
Saturday evening at the
Anglican Church in Gustavia. The program
includes their popular
repertoire of hymns,
gospel songs, and pops, as
well as “Great Scott,” a
musical look at the life of
composer Scott Joplin,
the celebrated pianist and
father of ragtime, music
that was popular in the
early 20th century and a
precursor of jazz. At the
piano, the chorale’s music
director, Charles Darden,
plays Joplin, juxtaposing
some of his most famous
songs with snippets about
his life. Darden, who
appeared as Joplin in
2000, will perform in
English on Friday night
and in French on Saturday
night. “We hope this festive program will attract a
full house,” says Darden.
“The money we make
will finance part of the
cost of the trip the choir
hopes to make to New
York. The participants
will pay the rest.”

date has not yet been set
for the concert they will
perform with the professional choir of the Church
of Saint Barthélemy, located on Park Avenue. “The
music director has agreed
in principle. We need to set
a date during the week we
are there,” notes Darden.
“Bruno Magras has told us
that he has asked the
French consulate to host us
as well, and one evening
will take place in a beautiful apartment on Park
Avenue, hosted in our honor by a friend Mickael
Valenti, composer of the
Hymn to Saint Barthélemy,
who will be there and to
whom the evening will be
dedicated.” The choir
members are looking forward to discovering the
Big Apple. And what better
tour guide than Charles
Darden, who has lived
there for 30 years?

Martine Lainé Shows Her “Patchwork”
At Météo France
M
ost people know Martine
Lainé for the paintings she
has exhibited several times
in Saint Barth. This time Martine is
revealing a different side of her artistic personality: she also works with
textiles to create patchwork quilts. In
fact, she has done patchwork for the
past 27 years and has also been a
teacher of this textile art.
She made her first quilted bedspread
when her daughter was born, using
pieces of fabric she collected. This art
form quickly became one of her passions, along with painting. She organized the first exhibit of patchwork in
Guadeloupe and began teaching, while
also successfully participating in
national and international competitions. In 1996, she participated in the
finals of the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas. In 1999, she
created a patchwork for Christian
Lacroix, then in 2000 she took part in
the International Patchwork Competition Chartres, followed by the International Quilt Festival of Tokyo in 2003,

before competing in the competition at
the lace museum in Retournac.
At the moment, Martine is in Saint
Barth where she is showing her most
recent patchwork as well as some
paintings she has not yet exhibited—
on the theme of flora. The exhibit,
which runs from February 22 through
March 2, is at the large space of
Météo France, near the lighthouse
above Gustavia.
NEWS FROM SINT MAARTEN
Spirit Air:
One flight per week
As of January, the low-cost company, Spirit Airlines, has only
offered one flight per week, compared to the three they had scheduled before that. Only the Sunday flight from Saint Martin to
Fort Lauderdale has been maintained. The company hopes to
reinstate the flights on Friday
and Saturday as of next year. The
company has stated that the
reduction in flights in due to a
reduction in demand by American tourists for flights to Sint
Maarten, according to the communications director of Spirit
Airlines. Their inaugural flight
took place on April 20, 2007, at
which time the airline and the
government of the Dutch side of
the island had hopes to rapidly
expand the flight to a daily basis.
Missing Visa:
Royalty Rejected!
Le Prince of Qatar Tamim Bin
Hamad Al Thani and his court
were rejected by immigration
officials upon their arrival Tuesday evening at Juliana Airport in
Sint Maarten. The group did not
have the proper Visa for entry
into the Dutch West Indies. The
prince and his entourage came
from the United States and were
in possession of visas issued by
the European Union, according
to a declaration by Caribbean
Exotica.com. The head of the
company turned somersaults
trying to resolve the problem of
the missing visa, even by personally calling government officials
in Sint Maarten...But to no avail.
Aggravated by the situation, the
Prince headed back to the United
States. His group had reserved
rooms at the Westin Hotel for a
week-long stay, and the prince
had several meetings with realestate agents with an eye toward
purchasing a villa on the
island….
