Minnesota Celebrates
National Ballroom Dance Week
"Give lt A Whirl..."
Saint Paul!
'Give it a Whirl" is the theme of the 1996 National Ballroom
Dance Week celebration to be held September 20-29. That's
just what the dancing world will be doing as we "whirl" into ten
days of dance events!
Saturdag, September 14
ll arn: VienrreseWalrz
This is the seventh anniversary of the national celebration to
educate the public about the wonderful health and social
benefits of ballroom dancing, to attract new dancers and to
encourage more dancing. All over the country, both amateur
and professional dancers, studios, ballrooffis, dance
publications and other supporters of ballroom dancing will be
sharing their love of dancing. Not just ballroom dancing,
however, is being promoted -- all types are highlighted"

TV Dance Notes
r
Needing a break from the Olympics, I flipped on the TV one
Sunday in August and caught a program on KSTP called,
Swinging Down Memory Lane with Tony Sandler &
Friends. lt was actually done in March of 1995, as a pilot for a
hoped-for regular program. Featured for a few dances were
local pros, Tracy Heinze & Dave Murphy, and Meghan
Guernsey & Brian Sostek, from the Dancers Studio.

Some of you may know that I work for KARE-I 1 as a freelance co-anchor/meteorologist. On Saturday, September 1 4th
f 'll be doing the KARE-I 1 Saturday show (7-10am) and the
producer has given me the go-ahead to produce a 5-8 minute
segment on ballroom dancing-- in advance ol National
Ballroom Dance Week. While details as of this writing aren't
f irm, expect to see several of our local talent in action. lt's
great publicity, as that show draws between 1/3 and 112 million
viewers!

We're also looking for an editor. My term expires at year's
end and due to other commitments I won't be pursuing a
second term. lf you've got a f lair for writing and organization

Membership Update
Okay, so you're a little confused about your USABDA
membership. We'll try to clarify it for you. When you join
USABDA, you're joining the National organization, which also
gives you a local affiliation. This means that, as a member,
you're entitled to discounts on any events that we offer them.
Now, we don't have an option lor a local-only membership.
You're either a national/local member or you're not.

Ske
Everyone has the option to purchase a subscription to this
newsletter for the $15 rate. lf you're strictly a subscriber,
discounts at dances do not apply"
And, by the way, our monthly dances offer lessons at an
additional $2 charge for both members and non-members
alike. Considering most group classes are $1 0-15, we think
this is a bargain!

Cruisin'with YMCA & USABDA
Northtown YMCA celebrated its Grand Opening on Saturday,
July 27, by hosting a "Cruise Ship P"tty," and invited USABDA
on board! USABDA enteftained the 200+ crowd while they
toured the new facility and danced just if they were on a
cruise. The site was decked out with the best in nautical
regalia and because there was no official emcee, it was like
attending a mini-USABDA dance. Hats off to the following for
participating: Karen Kettler (for organizing and introducing our
group), Carol & Gary Stroick, Lisa Hamilton & John
Woodcock, Donna Buchholtz & Wally Wifsey, Rita Stoner,
Mary Jean Lundeen & Jim Aubrecht, Noel Blair & C.R.
Barragan, and Bonita Bartholomew & Mark Vollmer, as
well as Joyce Thompson & Pete Maki for providing tunes for
all. Thanks also to Wade Wadord in his efforts to contact
potential dancers. YMCA donated $250; many thanks to Vicki
Koepplin and YMCA for this generous contribution and
allowing us to partake in the festivities!
