PUBLISHER’S NOTE
Do Yall Get It?
Another issue completed. Thank Goodness. Its challenging trying to get this
paper up an running like it should be. Its like people dont understand what a black
newspaper is and the importance of one. Sometimes when I am out selling the
paper or talking to people about our vision for it, I wonder whether I am speaking
a foreign language or whether black people really aren’t as smart as I thought they
were. I am not being sarcastic either. I have a strong southern draw because I am
from Atlanta and we are very country and ghetto. I actually leave meetings with
people who I am talking about the paper too, and go home and tape record myself
to see if maybe they don’t understand me because of the way I talk.
So maybe if I write it in laymans terms it will go over better, so here goes:
This is an African - American, or Black or Negro or Minority or whatever your
word for non-white, magazine is. Our goal is to highlight what’s going on in our
community, because currently, no such medium exists. You’ve got papers like the
Tennessee Tribune or the Urban Journal, but they cover a much older segment
of the community. No slight against them, (although it will probably be taken as
such) but this city is changing. Without media to reflect that, people will not know
what is going on and how to become a part of that change.
So that is what this is. Now let me explain to you why it is needed. If you have
a black business, how do you expect to get customers if you don’t advertise. It
baffles me how many people I meet that tell me they have there own business and
then I tell them to invest $100 in an ad and they are like, they don’t have it? I’m
lost black people. People pay $100 to get there hair done. To buy a pair a sneakers, to buy a new shirt. You really don’t have $100 to invest in your “so-called”
business. And for a small business, investing in radio or television is much too
expensive. So we created this paper as a low cost mechanism to get products and
services in front of a larger audience.
Another reason this paper is needed is to inform you of what’s going on in
the city. You’re not going to find out by listening to the radio because the market
doesn’t follow the radio. They follow promoters. And most promoters don’t use
the radio unless its something big happening. So most weekends you just sit at
home thinking there is nothing going on waiting for your friends to tell you about
an event they just heard some people talking about that’s been going on for years,
and you didn’t even know. You can pick up a copy of the Scene or the Metro
Mix, but if you go to anything in any of those publications, you will not see any
black people there. Unless Earthquake is at Zanies or something. This is no slight
against them either because their paper is developed to serve their audience which
is predomitely white. >> CONTINUED @ http://www.stayonthego.com/

EDITORS’S NOTE
What’s Your Cause?
You know, we’ve somehow lost the real essence to purpose. I don’t mean not knowing what you are supposed to be when you grow up, as in career. It’s a much deeper
and serious condition than that. Somehow, along the way, we’ve gotten so caught
up in the acquisition of things, that we’ve lost the desire to work passionately for a
meaningful cause. Meaningful cause, not just being able to wear Gucci or drive a
Benz and live in a chic condo, but what about feeding the hungry or lobbying for
world peace?
I know, I know…sounds too preachy. But are we truly limiting ourselves by
eliminating such things from our store of desires? I mean, how impossible must
have achieving Civil Rights seemed to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when he and his
colleagues decided that change was worth dying for? I mean, don’t get me wrong,
I enjoy nice things, but shouldn’t we have causes that are bigger than ourselves?
Shouldn’t we explore something greater than just getting what we can get?
This is a call. This is a call for you to get a cause. Choose something that you think
is unattainable. The cure for cancer. The elimination of homelessness. The restoration of Haiti. The combating of obesity in your family. Creating opportunities for
young people to go to college. Do something towards your cause at least once a
week no matter how small or unappreciated it may seem. I guarantee you that your
pursuits will change, your perspective will be revised and, oddly enough, your
original desired acquisition will occur right after you realized it wasn’t what you
wanted after all.
GO. I dare you.

RIO: STAR ON THE RISE
A MOMENT WITH MARIO “RIO” MOORE
A
s a singer, songwriter,
producer and rapper, Rio is the
irresistible edition to the new age
sound of music defining the industry today. Distinguished for his
soul infused, futuristic pop beats
and his distinctive R&B flow, Rio
is quickly becoming the driving
force motivating the underground
scene. Before he was a precociously multi- talented universal
artist, he was Nashville, TN
native Mario Moore, humbly following in his parent’s
footsteps. A son of musical
parents, his
father being a jazz trumpeter and his mother, alongside
her family, being a soul
singer, it was only natural
that he would gravitate in
the same direction. Rio
credits them to his success, “Everything about
my music comes from my
family background. They are my
original influence.” Rio’s love
affair with music began when he
started teaching himself how to
play the piano which lead to him
playing for his church. Feeling
boundless, he did not limit himself
to performing for church events.
His hunger for music was the
source behind exploring it further.
Developing an ear of his own, Rio
became absorbed in the vibes of
R&B and rebellious delivery of
Hip Hop. Eventually he went on to
learn how to play the drums, the
guitar and mirroring the melody
of both genres. Showing signs of
a producer-to-be, he would record
himself singing over work he
composed using two tape decks.
From penning simple thoughts to
composing artfully inspired music, he was developing as a well
rounded artist. “As an artist, I’m
directly influenced by the music
I produce but I never separate the
two because my process depends
on both,” - Rio. Although creating music was a constant factor in
Rio’s life, he would only let his
friends hear what he produced.
He never took it as seriously as it
reflected. It would be his
listening audience that would
charge him to turn his hobby into
a career. Soon, Rio began to sup-
“I create the music
from lyrics, situations, experiences; or
anything it takes to
move me in a direction to make a song.”
ply artists with lyrics and beats in
all genres. Ghostwriting, singing
and producing for his personal use
spawned into a successful profession before his eyes. In honor of
his hit making abilities, Rio has
been nominated for Southern
Entertainment Awards as well as
Dove Awards, has worked with
A-list producers and artists and
is noted as a viable musician. “I
create the music from lyrics, situations, experiences; or anything it
takes to move me in a direction to
make a song. My music is a reflection of versatiity, adrenalized
energy, and inspiration from God.”
– Rio Currently, Rio has released
singles, ‘Video Girl,’ ‘Diamond,’
and ‘Take it’ in support of his mixtape As I See It now available on
Riomusicnow.com.
