Timeline represents a small sampling of SDMC’s events and milestones. Dates are approximate.
Meet the founding members
Tony & Mary Beecher
Miata(s) owned: 1990 Classic Red “B” package, with a
hardtop. (Now owned by
Anthony Wilde in Las Vegas.)
Club
positions:
Mary,
Treasurer (1996-1997); Tony,
Treasurer (1997-1998)
Favorite event: Our favorite
Mary & Tony Beecher
Miata event was in the early
years at Gold Rush, but I think that precedes SDMC. The
Miata at the Ranch in Solvang was a blast.
Favorite moment: Tony: Trying to keep up with Rainer
on Couser Canyon. Mary: Riding in Rainer’s Miata
through Couser Canyon. Both: Helping out Lou and
Ruth Stark after they lost their house to the La Costa fire.
Tony and Mary are no longer members of the club. We thank
them for replying to our request.
Mark Booth
Miata(s) owned: Cathy and
I have owned two Miatas.
The first was a 1992 Classic
Red “B” package. Our second Miata is the current
2001 Classic Red LS. Both
Miatas were/are heavily
modified.
Club positions: President
(1996-1998);
Membership
Dude (1998-2000); Events
Coordinator (2005+)
Favorite moment: I have three favorite moments. The
first was watching Vicky Krueger imitate the “Butter
Lady” at 1997’s Miata at the Ranch. Next would be
watching Art Hamilton sing “Georgia” (Karaoke), complete with a backup chorus line of SDMC ladies, at
1998’s Moss Motors’ Event (Miatas and British cars together for that one). And, third, was being presented
with a recognition trophy and a custom SDMC logo artwork (signed by many members) at SDMC’s second annual meeting (the end of my first term as President). The
trophy and signed logo artwork still adorn my den, and
I’ll treasure them forever.
ter Copy Editor; Newsletter
Proofreader.
Robert “JTBob” Holland
Rainer & Marianne Mueller
Miata(s) owned: I’ve owned
just one. I got a Classic Red
1992 Miata “A” package in
October of 1992. I’ve been
updating her ever since, and
have been autocrossing her
regularly since 1993. My
wife, Carol, owns a White
1995 Miata “R” package. It’s
funny how the love of cars
and our passion for autocrossing brought us together!
Miata(s) owned: 1995 White
base; 2001 British Racing
Green SE
Favorite event: It is difficult to nail down a favorite
event because there have been so many. But, I’d have to
say that SDMC’s presence at our first National Miata
Event is near the top. Our first National Event as a newly
founded club was Moss Motors’s Miata at the Ranch in
June of 1997. SDMC dominated that event, both in numbers and enthusiasm. Other favorite events are Miata’s
10th Birthday Bash in Texas in 1999 (SDMC dominated
again!), both SDMC Surf ‘N’ Safari events (1999 and
2004), and the Waid’s Search for Madonna weekend.
Favorite moment: That
would probably be the national event in Buellton, Miata at the Ranch (and yes,
the official title was singular).
Bob Krueger
Robert & Carol Holland
Favorite event: Hmm, I’d have to say the Twilight Runs
have been my favorite. Good roads and good scenery.
Plus, watching a huge line of Miatas going towards the
setting sun is hard to beat.
Favorite moment: I think the first Surf ‘N’ Safari was my
favorite moment. Our club had worked so long and hard
on putting our first ever regional event together. And it
went perfectly. I thought the dinner banquet was the
crowning achievement for the club.
Rainer and Marianne were not
available for comment.
Woody Woodhouse
Marianne & Rainer Mueller
Cindy Paloma
Miata(s) owned: 1992 Crystal White “B” package; 2004
Velocity Red Mazdaspeed
Club positions: Vice President (1996-1997); E-mail
Postmaster (1996-1999)
Miata(s) owned: My 1995
Classic Red PEP is the first
and only Miata I have
owned. It replaced a Datsun 240Z that I had driven
for 25 years and 250,000
miles. Currently, the Miata
only has 120 odd thousand
miles on it, and is far from
ready to be replaced.
Woody Woodhouse
Club positions: I was the
SDMC representative to the San Diego Automotive Museum Car Club Council for several years.
Cindy was not available for
comment.
Cindy Paloma
Ruth & Lou Stark
Miata(s) owned: Only my current 1991 “French racing”
(Mariner) Blue A package
Miata(s) owned: I bought my first 1990 Classic Red Miata back in September 1989, but did not get it until November because of the backlog. I purchased a Classic
Red 2004 in December 2004, and sold my old Miata to a
friend back in Texas where it is still going strong.
Club positions: Membership Director (1996-1998); Name
Badges (1996-1999); Vice President (1997-2000); Newslet-
Club positions: Ruth, Secretary/Events Coordinator
(1996-1997)
“Voodoo” Bob Krueger
Ruth and Lou Stark
Favorite moment: My favorite moment has to be the
time I lost the Miata group and tried to catch up while
racing a motorcyclist up Palomar Mountain. A more
memorable and emotional moment was when we received a commemorative stone from our friends at
SDMC when we were rebuilding our new home after the
fire.
Club positions: Vice President (1997-1998); President
(1998-1999); Autocross coordinator (1998-1999).
Club positions: Club Webmaster (1996-2004); Newsletter
Editor (1996-1997); E-mail Postmaster (1999-2004)
Mark & Cathy Booth
Favorite event: My favorite
club (local) event has been
the Puke-O-Rama.
Favorite event: Our favorite event is probably the
10th anniversary event in
Dallas, where we got to see
old friends, and make
some very good new
friends on the way there
and back. Also, I really enjoyed the driving schools
and track events over the
years.
Favorite event: My favorite events have been the automotive event related ones: The Monterey Historic Races,
Petersen Museum tours, Coronado races, and the driving
class Larry put on at the Stadium. I also really enjoyed
the Palomar Observatory runs and, always, Mark and
Cathy’s Twilight Run.
Favorite moment: It’s hard to pick a specific moment or
happening, but one of my favorite memories is of one of
the early Monterey runs: Trying to keep up with JT and
Voodoo Bob on Highway One through Big Sur—a great
run in any car, but magical in a Miata.
