Counselors’ Corner
~Deby Bryson, DRHS Lead Counselor
Technology & Infinite Campus
~Cathy Jacobson, Technology Coordinator
I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer break. Though it
is the middle of summer, it is never too early to plan for the start
of the school year. Your students now have access to Office 365
through Washoe County School District (WCSD). This means
that they can create Microsoft Office documents online, as well
as downloading Microsoft Office to use on their computers. You
can find more information on Office 365 on the WCSD home
page, www.washoeschools.net, under Students and Parents then
Office 365. When students return for the new school year, we
will be helping them login to the system and showing them how
to use it.
Summer is here and students are ready for a well-deserved break!
Sometimes there are those who need to do a little catching up on
credits… and this year our Credit Recovery Summer School is
running from June 20th to July 22nd from 8 am until noon, Monday
- Friday. Students will be working on a computer and all courses
are web-based, so they can put in extra time from home in order to
finish more quickly. Please call the school at 851-5656 to take
advantage of this opportunity to make up credits. Credit Recovery
Summer School is free and our goal is 100% graduation!
As Damonte Ranch High School continues to grow at a rapid pace,
it will be necessary to adjust the caseload for each counselor a bit
next year. Please be flexible with some changes. Also, I am happy
to announce that Kevin Rutherford will be taking on the duty of
Lead Counselor. We have a great team and look forward to working with you next year. Have a wonderful summer and we’ll see
you in August!

Dress Code
Advanced Placement Update
~Shaun Finnigan, Assistant Principal
~Kevin Taylor, Assistant Principal
The primary responsibility for dress and grooming rests with our students and their parents/legal guardians. However, the District does
reserve the right to establish a comprehensive dress code with limitations for students which addresses what clothing they may wear and
how they may wear that clothing. School authorities have the professional responsibility and legal sanction to enforce student dress requirements, and within this authority, the right to request that students
change their attire to conform to the District ’s Dress Code. The following requirements are not intended to silence expressive conduct,
but instead, constitute an attempt to maintain a productive, safe,
learning environment.
I want to share a few reminders regarding our Advanced Placement program. Please remember to plan out a schedule to
work on your summer assignments throughout the break, if
your teacher(s) assigned any. If you have any questions regarding summer assignments, please do not hesitate to send
your teacher(s) an email or communicate by whichever means
works best. Also, it’s a good idea to pay your fees over the
summer, so it’s one less thing to worry about. The deadline for
paying AP fees for the 2016-2017 School Year is Thursday,
December 1, 2016. Exams ar e appr oximately $92 each and
can be paid to Ms. Wallace through the Bookkeeper’s office.
As specified in Washoe County School District procedures, “the dress or
grooming of all students must not present potential health or safety problems
or cause distractions.” Specific prohibitions or limitations include, but are not
limited to, the following:
Condition and Wear of Clothing
Nothing that distracts or poses a safety hazard, to include holes, rips, or tears
that reveal the body; and tight-fitting or revealing clothing.
On a final note, we are always available to assist you. Therefore, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your son
or daughter’s education, please do not hesitate to call the
school at 851-5656. Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you back in August.

The impact of the food choices we make affects not only our
physical, but also our emotional well being. The Foods and
Nutrition program is expanding here at DRHS with a level
2 class. Mustangs are educated on positive eating habits, our
food supply and keeping it safe, as well as so many other food
topics. Contact Mrs. Thiede with any questions or suggestions.

net. It is thr ough this sour ce of communication that senior s

Attention Parents of 11 & 12 Graders: As you may know, the
PSAT and SAT have been redesigned to better align with a typical
high school curriculum. Yet, the test is still quite challenging, and
a high PSAT or SAT score can make a huge difference in your
student's college scholarship and admission opportunities. Once
again, Doorway to College Foundation will offer a ZAPS PSAT/
SAT seminar to help our students ear n their highest-personal
scores on the redesigned test. Watch for a letter from Doorway to
College about our ZA PS seminar on September 21st and 22nd.
Have a wonderful and relaxing Summer!

A Message from the Science Department
~Alicia Woo, Department Chair
Although it may seem early, this is a good time to start preparing for
the next school year. One of the most important things students can do
is to get some rest over the summer. It is important that they recharge
their battery so they are ready to go when school starts again in August. It is also important that you check to make sure your child is
enrolled for the course that is in line with their future goals. If your
child is not enrolled in the appropriate course, please contact the counseling department. It is much easier to change the course selection
before school starts. Also, it is a great idea to purchase supplies in
advance. You may want to check to see if the teacher has a list of
supplies on his or her website. The first day of school will be August
8th. We hope to see everyone here and ready to learn!
Finally, I would like to introduce the new science department
chair. Stephen Martin will be taking over leadership for the department. He has been teaching at Damonte Ranch since 2006 and is
committed to finding new ways to improve the quality of science
education.
