WE’RE CHARMED
Michele Barouh was practically born clutching a diamond watch. Her father and
mother, Jack and Rita, founded Michele Watches when she was a toddler, and with
the exception of her first timepiece—a Tasmanian Devil® cartoon digital her dad
picked up in Hong Kong—Michele has been wearing the family’s unique designs
ever since. The sporty, luxurious watches were introduced in the U.S. in 1999, and
the brand enjoyed immediate success among affluent, young trendsetters. Now, with
the debut of her first jewelry collection, it’s Michele’s turn to shine.
“My father’s lifelong passion has been watches, and although I love them
too, I have always dreamed of creating a jewelry line,” says Michele.
Like the timepieces, the premier collection of gold charms combines
classic elegance with a high-fashion sensibility. For the few who
aren’t familiar with Michele Watches, devotees build a
wardrobe of the interchangeable straps, which are available
in new shades each season. In the jewelry collection,
charms, in a variety of colors and motifs, are the
convertible element.
In a nod to the current penchant for bullion, the debut
pieces of her jewelry line are 18-karat yellow gold with
rose-cut semiprecious stones that make for a brilliant
checkerboard effect. Lemon citrine, rose de France, and
blue topaz are among the gems that complement the
predominantly subdued palette of designers’ looks for
spring. Tiny clasps allow you to attach charms to the
collection’s necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings.
Looking ahead to fall, Michele plans to add white gold
and more diamonds to the mix.
“I want the jewelry to become as well-known
as the watches. That’s my ultimate goal,” states Michele.
The New York skyline serves as a spectacular backdrop (Mother Nature deserves a shout-out for the preternaturally blue sky).

Over two days last fall (Halloween and
November 1, to be precise), Mr. Lagerfeld shot
the NM advertising campaign that bows later this
spring. His location of choice was a rooftop in
Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, affording
vast views of the famous skyline. Models
Gemma Ward and Brad Kroenig slipped into the
new Karl Lagerfeld designs and posed among
vast blocks of air-conditioning units (which you
won’t see in the final prints).
