PARISH ACTIVITIES
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
The seven sacraments are sensible and efficacious signs of God’s grace because they accomplish God’s work of salvation in a way
that is accessible to the senses. They are not simply rites, they are not symbolic representations, they are not magic and they are
not inventions of the Church. Christ instituted them and their power comes from Him.
The Eucharist stands out among the sacraments because through it, not only we receive grace, the life and love of God. We receive
Christ Himself. When we receive the consecrated host, we receive the Body and Blood of Christ. We receive all of His humanity
and all of His divinity under the appearance of the sacred species. Christ is truly and substantially present. The Blessed Sacrament is His Body and His Blood. For that reason, Catholics adore, worship the Blessed Sacrament.
At our parish we have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
at St. André Bessette chapel in Ivan’s house every Thursday and we
have the possibility of coming to pray before the Eucharist at any time of the day seven days a week. All that is needed is to stop
by the parish office and request an access card to the chapel.

In an Apostolic Exhortation entitled Sacrament of Charity, published after a Synod on the Eucharist, Pope Benedict XVI explained the relationship that exists between the Eucharist and the other sacraments.
“The Second Vatican Council recalled that "all the sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are directed towards it. For in the most blessed Eucharist is contained the entire
spiritual wealth of the Church, namely Christ himself our Pasch and our living bread, who gives life to humanity through his
flesh – that flesh which is given life and gives life by the Holy Spirit. Thus men and women are invited and led to offer themselves,
their works and all creation in union with Christ." This close relationship of the Eucharist with the other sacraments and the
Christian life can be most fully understood when we contemplate the mystery of the Church herself as a sacrament. The Council
in this regard stated that "the Church, in Christ, is a sacrament – a sign and instrument – of communion with God and of the
unity of the entire human race." To quote Saint Cyprian, as "a people made one by the unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy
Spirit," she is the sacrament of Trinitarian communion.

Because the Eucharist, the consecrated host, is the Body and Blood of Christ, we treat it with utmost respect, veneration and
reverence. The piece of cloth that the priest places on the altar at the time of the offertory, which is called the corporal is meant to
contain any particles that may fall. After the distribution of communion, the priest purifies the paten to make sure that not even
the most microscopic of particles is lost. All of us have to be careful too in the way we treat the Blessed Sacrament. Sadly, in our
parish we have had troubling cases of people who, perhaps because of ignorance, came forward to receive the Eucharist and then
they did not consume it. It is important that all of us care for the integrity of the Blessed Sacrament and if we invite friends, especially if they are not Catholic, or we bring children, we explain them the meaning of the sacrament and also the fact that in order
to receive communion, one has to be a baptized Catholic who is in state of grace, meaning that if anybody is aware of a serious
sin, that person would have to be reconciled with Christ and the Church through the sacrament of Confession before receiving.
This is so among other reasons because the Eucharist is a bond that unites us. Those who do not share the faith of the Church
are obviously not in full communion with us and sin destroys the bonds of communion that unite us with Christ and the Church.
The fact that the Church is the "universal sacrament of salvation" shows how the sacramental economy ultimately determines
the way that Christ, the one Savior, through the Spirit, reaches our lives in all their particularity. The Church receives and at the
same time expresses what she herself is in the seven sacraments, thanks to which God's grace concretely influences the lives of
the faithful, so that their whole existence, redeemed by Christ, can become an act of worship pleasing to God…
If the Eucharist is truly the source and summit of the Church's life and mission, it follows that the process of Christian initiation
must constantly be directed to the reception of this sacrament… It should be kept in mind that the whole of Christian initiation is
a process of conversion undertaken with God's help and with constant reference to the ecclesial community, both when an adult
is seeking entry into the Church, as happens in places of first evangelization and in many secularized regions, and when parents
request the sacraments for their children…
Love for the Eucharist leads to a growing appreciation of the sacrament of Reconciliation… The loss of a consciousness of sin
always entails a certain superficiality in the understanding of God's love… Furthermore, the relationship between the Eucharist
and the sacrament of Reconciliation reminds us that sin is never a purely individual affair; it always damages the ecclesial communion that we have entered through Baptism…
If the Eucharist shows how Christ's sufferings and death have been transformed into love, the Anointing of the Sick, for its part,
unites the sick with Christ's self-offering for the salvation of all, so that they too, within the mystery of the communion of saints,
can participate in the redemption of the world. The relationship between these two sacraments becomes clear in situations of
serious illness…
The intrinsic relationship between the Eucharist and the sacrament of Holy Orders clearly emerges from Jesus' own words in
the Upper Room: "Do this in memory of me." On the night before he died, Jesus instituted the Eucharist and at the same time
established the priesthood of the New Covenant…
The Eucharist, as the sacrament of charity, has a particular relationship with the love of man and woman united in marriage.
A deeper understanding of this relationship is needed at the present time… The Eucharist inexhaustibly strengthens the indissoluble unity and love of every Christian marriage.”
The solemnity of Corpus Christi is an opportunity for us to reawaken a sense of awe, wonder and gratitude at the presence of the
Lord Jesus in the Eucharist!

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:
Los siete sacramentos son signos sensibles y eficaces de la gracia de Dios porque realizan la obra de salvación de Dios de una
manera accesible a los sentidos. Nos son solamente ritos, no son representaciones simbólicas, no son magia ni tampoco inventos
de la Iglesia. Cristo mismo los instituyó y su poder viene de Él.
La Eucaristía se destaca entre todos los sacramentos porque a través de ella no solamente recibimos gracia, el amor y la vida de
Dios, sino que recibimos al mismo Cristo. Cuando recibimos la hostia consagrada, recibimos el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Recibimos toda su humanidad y toda su divinidad bajo la apariencia de la especie sagrada. Cristo está real y sustancialmente presente, el Santísimo Sacramento es su Cuerpo y su Sangre. Por eso, los católicos adoramos, damos culto al Santísimo Sacramento.
En nuestra parroquia tenemos adoración del Santísimo en la capilla San André Bessette en la casa de Iván, todos los jueves y
también tenemos la posibilidad de venir a rezar delante de la Eucaristía a cualquier hora del día los siete días de la semana. Solo
se necesita pasar por la oficina parroquial y solicitar una tarjeta de acceso a la capilla.
Dado que la Eucaristía, la hostia consagrada es el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo, la tratamos con el mayor de los respetos, veneración y reverencia. La tela que el sacerdote coloca sobre el altar en el momento del ofertorio, que se llama corporal, es precisamente para evitar que cualquier partícula pudiera caer. Después de la distribución de la comunión el sacerdote purifica la patena
para asegurarse que ni siquiera una partícula microscópica se pierda.
Lamentablemente, en nuestra parroquia hemos tenido casos alarmantes en los que personas, tal vez por ignorancia, se acercaron
a recibir la Eucaristía y luego no la consumieron. Es importante que todos cuidemos la integridad del Santísimo Sacramento y
que cuando invitemos amigos, especialmente si no son católicos, o cuando traemos niños, les expliquemos el significado del sacramento y les recordemos que para recibir la comunión, hay que ser bautizado católico que está en gracia, o sea que si alguien
está consciente de un pecado grave, esa persona debería reconciliarse con Cristo y con la Iglesia recurriendo al sacramento de la
Confesión antes de recibir la comunión. Esto es así, entre otras razones, porque la Eucaristía es un vínculo que nos une. Quienes
no comparten la fe de la Iglesia obviamente no están en comunión plena con nosotros y el pecado destruye los vínculos de comunión que nos unen a Cristo y a la Iglesia.
En una Exhortación Apostólica titulada Sacramento de la Caridad, publicada después de un Sínodo sobre la Eucaristía, el Papa
Benedicto XVI explicó la relación que existe entre la Eucaristía y los otros sacramentos.
“El Concilio Vaticano II recordó que « los demás sacramentos, como también todos los ministerios eclesiales y las obras de apostolado, están unidos a la Eucaristía y a ella se ordenan. La sagrada Eucaristía, en efecto, contiene todo el bien espiritual de la
Iglesia, es decir, Cristo mismo, nuestra Pascua y Pan vivo que, por su carne vivificada y vivificante por el Espíritu Santo, da vida
a los hombres.. Así, los hombres son invitados y llevados a ofrecerse a sí mismos, sus trabajos y todas las cosas creadas junto
con Cristo ». Esta relación íntima de la Eucaristía con los otros sacramentos y con la existencia cristiana se comprende en su raíz
cuando se contempla el misterio de la Iglesia como sacramento. A este propósito, el Concilio Vaticano II afirma que « La Iglesia es
en Cristo como un sacramento o signo e instrumento de la unión íntima con Dios y de la unidad de todo el género humano ». Ella,
como dice san Cipriano, en cuanto « pueblo convocado por el unidad del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo », es sacramento de
la comunión trinitaria.
El hecho de que la Iglesia sea « sacramento universal de salvación » muestra cómo la « economía » sacramental determina en
último término el modo cómo Cristo, único Salvador, mediante el Espíritu llega a nuestra existencia en sus circunstancias específicas. La Iglesia se recibe y al mismo tiempo se expresa en los siete sacramentos, mediante los cuales la gracia de Dios influye
concretamente en los fieles para que toda su vida, redimida por Cristo, se convierta en culto agradable a Dios…
Puesto que la Eucaristía es verdaderamente fuente y culmen de la vida y de la misión de la Iglesia, el camino de iniciación cristiana tiene como punto de referencia la posibilidad de acceder a este sacramento…Se ha de tener siempre presente que toda
la iniciación cristiana es un camino de conversión, que se debe recorrer con la ayuda de Dios y en constante referencia a la
comunidad eclesial, ya sea cuando es el adulto mismo quien solicita entrar en la Iglesia, como ocurre en los lugares de primera
evangelización y en muchas zonas secularizadas, o bien cuando son los padres los que piden los Sacramentos para sus hijos…
El amor a la Eucaristía lleva también a apreciar cada vez más el sacramento de la Reconciliación… En realidad, perder la conciencia de pecado comporta siempre también una cierta superficialidad en la forma de comprender el amor mismo de Dios… Además,
la relación entre la Eucaristía y la Reconciliación nos recuerda que el pecado nunca es algo exclusivamente individual; siempre
comporta también una herida para la comunión eclesial, en la que estamos insertados por el Bautismo.
Si la Eucaristía muestra cómo los sufrimientos y la muerte de Cristo se han transformado en amor, la Unción de los enfermos, por
su parte, asocia al que sufre al ofrecimiento que Cristo ha hecho de sí para la salvación de todos, de tal manera que él también
pueda, en el misterio de la comunión de los santos, participar en la redención del mundo. La relación entre estos sacramentos se
manifiesta, además, en el momento en que se agrava la enfermedad…
La relación intrínseca entre Eucaristía y sacramento del Orden se desprende de las mismas palabras de Jesús en el Cenáculo:
« haced esto en conmemoración mía». En efecto, la víspera de su muerte, Jesús instituyó la Eucaristía y fundó al mismo tiempo
el sacerdocio de la nueva Alianza…
La Eucaristía, sacramento de la caridad, muestra una relación particular con el amor entre el hombre y la mujer unidos en matrimonio. Profundizar en esta relación es una necesidad propia de nuestro tiempo… La Eucaristía corrobora de manera inagotable
la unidad y el amor indisolubles de cada Matrimonio cristiano.”
¡La solemnidad de Corpus Christi es una oportunidad para renovar el estupor, asombro y gratitud frente a la presencia del Señor
Jesús en la Eucaristía!
